What Can We Learn From Adult Esl Students’ Responses To Children’S Literature?, Monique C. Stone Apr 2019

What Can We Learn From Adult Esl Students’ Responses To Children’S Literature?, Monique C. Stone

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Some teachers face frequently changing populations of students, making it difficult to gain cultural knowledge that is important to support student learning. The aim of this study was to explore how adult language-learner students in intensive English programs (IEPs) respond to children’s picture books portraying their home countries or cultures. Reader response theory (Rosenblatt, 1995) and cultural scaffolding (Gay, 2002; i.e., the use of student culture to support student learning) are the initial frameworks upon which the study was developed. The study was qualitative in nature and driven by a desire for the researcher to gain more cultural knowledge about …

A Functional Perspective On Everyday Sadism, Marley Russell Mar 2019

A Functional Perspective On Everyday Sadism, Marley Russell

Psychology ETDs

Everyday sadism is thus far a poorly operationalized personality trait. In its current conceptualization it offers predictive value for aggressive behavior over and above the effects of other antisocial personality traits. To improve the utility of this potentially critical predictor of socially undesirable behavior I conducted an exploratory study that more precisely examines its psychometric structure and informs its evolutionary significance. Due to the scarcity of research on everyday sadism (which is additionally limited by the trait’s poor operationalization) I suggest a functional hypothesis for its evolution based largely on theoretical reasoning. I propose this hypothesis for everyday sadism with …

Developing A Simulation Tool For Evaluating In-Motion Detector Systems (La-Ur-18-29139), Brian Jennings Mar 2019

Developing A Simulation Tool For Evaluating In-Motion Detector Systems (La-Ur-18-29139), Brian Jennings

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Available simulation software lacks the ability to produce in-motion detector responses for detector systems that may be used to detect the illicit trafficking of nuclear materials. In this thesis, a simulation tool is developed that uses static measured data as a basis set for producing in-motion detector responses with the ability to vary many parameters in each simulated trial. Once the basis set is measured and loaded into the simulation tool, the user interface allows the user to enter variations to speed, source height, source-to-detector distance, background exposure rate, which source(s) are present, their relative strength and shielding configuration, and …

From Big Science To “Deep Science”, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The Standard Model of particle physics has accomplished a great deal including the discovery of Higgs boson in 2012. However, since the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model has not been successful so far, some physicists are asking what alternative deeper theory could be beyond the Standard Model? This article discusses the relationship between mathematics and physical reality and explores the ways to go from Big Science to “Deep Science”.

Judicially Sanctioned Environmental Injustice: Making The Case For Medical Monitoring, Logan Glasenapp Mar 2019

Judicially Sanctioned Environmental Injustice: Making The Case For Medical Monitoring, Logan Glasenapp

New Mexico Law Review

Across the United States, families are getting ready to start their day. The kids are waking up and brushing their teeth, the toast is being buttered, and the newspaper is being retrieved from the curb. However, in some communities this scene is playing out against the backdrop of a toxic legacy dating back to the American industrial revolution. In the South Valley of Albuquerque, New Mexico, families are waking up to the smell of gasoline and the sound of idling trains. Around the harbor in New Bedford, Massachusetts, families are unable to sit down to a locally sourced seafood dinner. …

The Bureaucratic Takeover Of Criminal Sentencing, Maimon Schwarzschild Mar 2019

The Bureaucratic Takeover Of Criminal Sentencing, Maimon Schwarzschild

New Mexico Law Review

A tendency towards more bureaucracy is notable in various public and private American institutions in recent times. The courts have not been immune to this trend. Perhaps the most interesting and almost certainly the most consequential rise of bureaucracy over the courts in the past quarter century has been the transfer of power and discretion over criminal sentencing from federal judges to a bureaucratic sentencing commission. If only as a dramatic instance of growing regulatory power at the expense of the judiciary, it is worth considering how this happened, why it happened, what the legal consequences for the criminal justice …

Contrastive Analysis And Contrastive Rhetoric In The Legal Writing Classroom, Diane B. Kraft Mar 2019

Contrastive Analysis And Contrastive Rhetoric In The Legal Writing Classroom, Diane B. Kraft

New Mexico Law Review

In the past several decades, the number of English-as-a-second-language (ESL) speakers attending law schools as part of J.D. and LL.M. programs has increased dramatically. While some of these students are fluent in English, many are not yet able to read, write, and speak English, or understand spoken English, at the advanced level required for successful graduate work in law. The language problems are sometimes grammatical, sometimes cultural, and often both. For those students who are required to complete a writing course as part of their graduate program, deficiencies in writing ability can be a difficult obstacle to overcome. For the …

Design And Implementation Of A 72 & 84 Ghz Terrestrial Propagation Experiment; Exploitation Of Nexrad Data To Statistically Estimate Rain Attenuation At 72 Ghz, Nicholas Pawel Tarasenko Feb 2019

Design And Implementation Of A 72 & 84 Ghz Terrestrial Propagation Experiment; Exploitation Of Nexrad Data To Statistically Estimate Rain Attenuation At 72 Ghz, Nicholas Pawel Tarasenko

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The wireless communication sector is rapidly approaching network capacities as a direct result of increasing mobile broadband data demands. In response, the Federal Communications Commission allocated 71-76 GHz “V-band” and 81-86 GHz “W-band” for terrestrial and satellite broadcasting services. Movement by the telecommunication industry towards W/V-band operations is encumbered by a lack of validated and verified propagation models, specifically models to predict attenuation due to rain. Additionally, there is insufficient data available at W/V-bands to develop or test propagation models. The first aim of this study was the successful installation and operation of a terrestrial link to collect propagation data …

Melt Inclusions And Their Application - New Perspective On The Subsurface Architecture Of Cerro Negro Volcano, Nicaragua, John M. Hamilton Feb 2019

Melt Inclusions And Their Application - New Perspective On The Subsurface Architecture Of Cerro Negro Volcano, Nicaragua, John M. Hamilton

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Volatiles are the drivers of volcanic eruptions and monitoring and measurement in quiescent times are the key in determining when unrest within a volcanic system is beginning leading to possible cataclysms. Previous studies have focused on direct measurements from volcanic plumes or fumaroles, however, this study proposes the use of melt inclusions from tephra to determine volatile contents from the 1992 eruption of Cerro Negro Volcano, Nicaragua. The analysis of melt inclusions adds a new technique to the volatile analytical toolbox and can help to determine volatile contents from past eruptions and their subsequent evolution within a volcanic system.

Physics Beyond Catching A Mouse In The Dark: From Big Science To Deep Science, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache Feb 2019

Physics Beyond Catching A Mouse In The Dark: From Big Science To Deep Science, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The Higgs particle has been detected a few years ago, that is what newspapers tell us. For many physicists, the Standard Model of particle physics has accomplished all the jobs. Or to put it simply: The game is over. Is it true? Then some physicists began to ask: can go beyond the Standard Model? Because the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model has failed. If you feel that theoretical physics is becoming boring, you are not alone. Fortunately, there is good news: a new generation of physicists are doing table-top experiments in their basements. Can we expect new results later?2 …

Application Of Machine Learning To Chf Modelling, Mingfu He Mr Jan 2019

Application Of Machine Learning To Chf Modelling, Mingfu He Mr

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Accurate prediction of CHF is still a challenging issue in the study of boiling heat transfer. Many factors contribute to the occurrence of CHF and the various trigger mechanisms are proposed to unravel physical phenomena behind CHF. However, those mechanisms cannot cover the multiple primary factors simultaneously and even some of them still remain controversially unresolved. In light of the complexity and difficulty of CHF modelling, hereby an ensemble-learning based framework is proposed to model and predict CHF based on the databank of CHF. Some prior trials have been done for three primary aspects of dominant factors, that is, surface …

An Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Flow Accelerated Flibe Corrosion, David B. Weitzel Jan 2019

An Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Flow Accelerated Flibe Corrosion, David B. Weitzel

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Renewed interest in molten salt reactor technology has brought to light the need for a better understanding of FLiBe corrosion. To this end a flowing FLiBe corrosion test loop was designed to test the flow effects of FLiBe corrosion. The loop consists of a pump, melt tank, and stainless-steel tubing assembly that heats the molten salt to high temperatures and circulates it over test specimens. The experiment has been constructed and has completed initial shakedown testing.

To support the flowing FLiBe experiment, a numerical corrosion model that couples FLiBe electrochemistry, solid metal diffusion, and mass transport was implemented. The model …

Remark On Creatio Ex Nihilo, Intelligent Design And Emergence Philosophy Approaches To Origin Of The Universe, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

It is known that the Big Bang theory was based on the concept of creation ex nihilo, after ancient Greek philosophers. In this paper, we will make few remark on the concept of creatio ex nihilo (as a commentary to a recent paper by Kalachanis, Athanasios Anastasiou, Ioannis Kostikas, Efstratios Theodossious and Мilan S. Dimitrijevi), as well as two other approaches, i.e. Intelligent Design and Emergence Theory by Clayton/Yong. As continuation of our recent paper to appear in forthcoming issue of J. Asia Mathematika, we argue that beside the above three approaches, a new concept called creatio ex-rotatione offers a …

Electrophysiological Mechanisms For Preparing Control In Time, Jacqueline Rosemary Janowich Jan 2019

Electrophysiological Mechanisms For Preparing Control In Time, Jacqueline Rosemary Janowich

Psychology ETDs

Cognitive control is critical in guiding goal-directed behavior, preparing neural resources and adapting processing to promote optimal action in a given environment. According to the Dual Mechanisms of Control theory (Braver, 2012), control can be dichotomized into proactive and reactive modes of control, utilized reciprocally in ahead-of-time preparation versus last-minute, stimulus-evoked reaction. Although a substantial body of work has tested differences between proactive control and reactive control, the underlying assumption of proactive control as a unitary process has not been systematically investigated. Very little is known as to how or when proactive control is initiated, sustained, or implemented.

Numerical Solution For Solving Procedure For 3d Motions Near Libration Points In The Circular Restricted Three Body Problem (Cr3bp), Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2019

Numerical Solution For Solving Procedure For 3d Motions Near Libration Points In The Circular Restricted Three Body Problem (Cr3bp), Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In a recent paper in Astrophysics and Space Science Vol. 364 no. 11 (2019), S. Ershkov & D. Leschenko presented a new solving procedure for Euler-Poisson equations for solving momentum equations of the CR3BP near libration points for uniformly rotating planets having inclined orbits in the solar system with respect to the orbit of the Earth. The system of equations of the CR3BP has been explored with regard to the existence of an analytic way of presentation of the approximated solution in the vicinity of libration points. A new and elegant ansatz has been suggested in their publication whereby, in …
