Association Between Self-Reported Dyspnea And Depressive Symptoms In New Mexico Uranium Workers, Shiva Sharma

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

BACKGROUND: Uranium workers risk experiencing dyspnea, a lung disease symptom. Previous studies found associations between dyspnea and depressive symptoms in lung disease, but this requires further study in occupational cohorts.

METHODS: This study evaluated the association between dyspnea and depressive symptoms in former uranium workers screened by New Mexico Radiation Exposure Screening & Education Program. Dyspnea and depressive symptoms were evaluated through questionnaires, Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale and a modified Patient Health Questionnaire-2, respectively. Logistic regression models were applied to cross-sectional analyses. Generalized linear models were applied to longitudinal analyses.

RESULTS: Cross-sectional analyses demonstrated higher dyspnea scores were …

Maize is a cultigen of global economic importance, but when it first became a staple grain in the Americas, was unknown and contested. Here, we report direct isotopic dietary evidence from 52 radiocarbon-dated human skeletons from two remarkably well-preserved rock-shelter contexts in the Maya Mountains of Belize spanning the past 10,000 years. Individuals dating before ~4700 calendar years before present (cal B.P.) show no clear evidence for the consumption of maize. Evidence for substantial maize consumption (~30% of total diet) appears in some individuals between 4700 and 4000 cal B.P. Isotopic evidence after 4000 cal B.P. indicates that maize became …

Age-Adjusted D-Dimer Cutoffs: A Warning From The Laboratory, Marian A. Rollins-Raval, Richard A. Marlar, Andrew J. Goodwin Jun 2020

Age-Adjusted D-Dimer Cutoffs: A Warning From The Laboratory, Marian A. Rollins-Raval, Richard A. Marlar, Andrew J. Goodwin

Pathology Research and Scholarship

D-dimer assays have been Food and Drug Administration (FDA)–approved or cleared for results below a manufacturer-defined cutoff in conjunction with low or intermediate pretest clinical probability to rule out venous thromboembolism.1 Given apparent overall increase of D-dimer level with age, clinical guidelines have recommended application of an age-adjusted D-dimer–level cutoff to exclude suspected pulmonary embolus specifically in patients with low or intermediate pretest clinical probability.2,3 Despite additional studies and literature availble, these guidelines themselves rest solely on the Age-Adjusted D-Dimer Cutoff Levels to Rule Out Pulmonary Embolism: The ADJUST-PE Study,4 applying an age-adjusted D-dimer–level …

Consistent Accuracy: A Goal For Thrombosis And Hemostasis Testing Is Accomplished Using An External Quality Assurance Program, Richard A. Marlar, Piet Meijer, Ian Jennings

Pathology Research and Scholarship

ccuracy of laboratory testing used in the diagnosis and management of thrombotic and hemostatic disorders can be very troublesome. Hemostatic testing has many pitfalls that are common to all sections of the laboratory, as well as a number of issues unique to hemostasis testing that are not seen in other laboratory disciplines (1,2). All aspects of laboratory testing have issues associated with analytical and post-analytical variables but hemostasis has many more issues pertaining to the preanalytical aspects of sample procurement and processing. Another major complexity is in the actual measurement of the end-product (a fibrin clot) …

Proposal Of A Neutrosophic Index To Evaluate The Management Of Internal Control, Nixon Patricio Lastra Calderón, Dayana Lizeth Villarruel Delgado, Danny Sandoval Malquín, Eddy Araujo Guerrón, Eddy Araujo Guerrón

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Corporate auditing is part of the necessary mechanisms to evaluate and monitor the practices being carried out in enterprises. It also allows for the timely correction of future trends that will damage the company. Internal control is part of these audits, where the company is internally analyzed, and is a highly recommended practice for both state and private companies. Evaluation of internal control presents some challenges, such as the presence of incomplete or contradictory information, as well as the importance of properly understanding and communicating what it is wished to study. This is why in this paper we propose an …

Neutrosophic Iadov Tecnique For Assessing The Proposal Of Standardization Of The Beef Cutting For Roasting In Patate Canton, Ecuador, Ana Isabel Utrera Velázquez, David Alberto García Coello, Esdras Real Garlobo, Cristian Escobar Vinueza

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Meat is an important food for human consumption. Its consumption is associated with economic development, so that the more meat consumed, the higher the level of quality of life or index of wealth attributed to a population. This consideration has led, during the second half of the 20th century, to a greater consumption of meat. To prepare different dishes requires an adequate knowledge of cutting meat, so ignoring this aspect would be contradictory with gastronomy. In Ecuador, and particularly in the Patate canton, there is a lack of knowledge about the types of cuts that can be made with meat, …

The study of leadership is a fairly recurring topic in the scientific literature in recent years. Some approaches concern with the relationship between leadership and some personality traits of leaders. One field where leadership is of great importance is the business world, where leaders are needed to direct the company's progress because they inspire the other members of the organization. This paper aims to propose a mathematical method for measuring the transformational leadership degree in the company. Transformational leadership is the most complete of leaderships; the transformational leader is versatile, charismatic, communicative, empathic, and produces positive changes in the company. …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

The internal control of a company is essential to evaluate the performance of the institution during a certain period of time, which allows taking the necessary measures to correct in advance the mistakes that are being made or to enhance the positive practices within the company. In this paper we propose to evaluate the Commercial Company Manolo's located in the city of Babahoyo, Ecuador, regarding the aspects measured in the internal control. For this, we use the neutrosophic 2-tuples method. This method is a part of the Computing with Word (CWW) that is distinguished by performing calculations on words rather …

Von Willebrand Factor As A Thrombotic And Inflammatory Mediator In Critical Illness, William E. Plautz, Zachary A. Matthay, Marian A. Rollins-Raval, Jay S. Raval, Lucy Z. Kornblith, Matthew D. Neal

Pathology Research and Scholarship

The endothelial exocytosis of high-molecular-weight multimeric von Willebrand factor (vWF) may occur in critical illness states, including trauma and sepsis, leading to the sustained elevation and altered composition of plasma vWF. These critical illnesses involve the common process of sympathoadrenal activation and loss of the endothelial glycocalyx. As a prothrombotic and proinflammatory molecule that interacts with the endothelium, the alterations exhibited by vWF in critical illness have been implicated in the development and damaging effects of downstream pathologies, such as disseminated intravascular coagulation and systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Given the role of vWF in these pathologies, there has been a …

A high-speed fluorescence microscope operating at a 490 Hz frame rate was used to image two different membrane proteins- the high-affinity IgE receptor FcɛRI, a transmembrane protein, and an outer-leaflet GPI-anchored protein. The IgE receptor was imaged via IgE labeled with Janelia Fluor 646 and the GPI-anchored protein was imaged using a GPI-GFP fusion protein and an ATTO 647 N labeled anti-GFP nanobody. Data was collected for both proteins in untreated cells and cells that had actin stabilized by phalloidin. This dataset can be used for development and testing of single-particle tracking methods on experimental data and to explore the …

Extracting And Standardizing Medical Examiner Data To Improve Health, Shamsi Daneshvari Berry, Heather J H Edgar

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Data from medical examiner offices are not commonly used in informatics but may contain information not in medical records. However, the vast majority of data is not standardized and is available only in large free text fields. We sought to extract information from the medical examiner database using Canary, a natural language processing tool. The text was then standardized to fit the selected normative answer list for each field. Multiple terminology and vocabulary standards from a variety of settings were utilized as data came from the medical examiner and interviews with next of kin. Thirty-seven percent of the metadata fields …
