Blood Product Transfusion In Adults: Indications, Adverse Reactions, And Modifications, Jay S. Raval, Joseph R. Griggs, Anthony Fleg Jul 2020

Blood Product Transfusion In Adults: Indications, Adverse Reactions, And Modifications, Jay S. Raval, Joseph R. Griggs, Anthony Fleg

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Millions of units of blood products are transfused annually to patients in the United States. Red blood cells are transfused to improve oxygen-carrying capacity in patients with or at high risk of developing symptomatic anemia. Restrictive transfusion thresholds with lower hemoglobin levels are typically clinically equivalent to more liberal thresholds. Transfusion of plasma corrects clinically significant coagulopathy in patients with or at high risk of bleeding. Mildly abnormal laboratory coagulation values are not predictive of clinical bleeding and should not be corrected with plasma. Transfused platelets prevent or treat bleeding in patients with thrombocytopenia or platelet dysfunction. Cryoprecipitate is transfused …

The Role Of Regulatory Agencies In The Frequency And Occurrence Of Health-Based Violations At Public Water Systems In The United States, Rose Afandi Jul 2020

The Role Of Regulatory Agencies In The Frequency And Occurrence Of Health-Based Violations At Public Water Systems In The United States, Rose Afandi

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was implemented in the United States (U.S.) in 1974 for the purpose of protecting consumers from water contaminants. The Federal government gave the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the authority to delegate the responsibility of ensuring that States, Sovereign Nations and U.S. territories meet specific requirements upon being granted primacy to regulate all public water systems (PWSs) in their jurisdiction. An examination of seven years (2013-2019) of SDWA compliance data from all PWSs in the U.S. revealed trends within various categories of regulating agencies that could create disparities in how water systems are regulated. Analyses …

Supporting Adequate Sleep In Patients Hospitalized With Psychiatric Illness Through A Nurse-Driven Protocol, Mary Perez Jul 2020

Supporting Adequate Sleep In Patients Hospitalized With Psychiatric Illness Through A Nurse-Driven Protocol, Mary Perez

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Sleep is growing in recognition for its part in overall health. Sleep is essential to optimal functioning in all people. Its link to psychiatric illness makes it especially important to those in recovery. As we learn more about sleep and its effects, it is important for nurses and nurse leaders to become more acquainted with how sleep affects health and what can be done to initiate good sleep. Since sleep is complex and supporting sleep must be individualized to each person, having a good understanding of both subjects is necessary. Sleep hygiene is a set of environmental and behavioral interventions …

Factors Affecting A Riparian Cottonwood Stand Die-Off Along The Rio Grande Pueblo Of Santa Ana New Mexico, Usa, Hannah A. Varani Jul 2020

Factors Affecting A Riparian Cottonwood Stand Die-Off Along The Rio Grande Pueblo Of Santa Ana New Mexico, Usa, Hannah A. Varani

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Negative effects of river control include altered sediment and biotic processes, leading to channel incision and discordance between water delivery and the evolved physiology of seed dispersal. In forests where tree regeneration is inhibited due to such altered processes, tree mortality is of utmost importance guiding forest management. I compared cottonwood ring-widths between adjacent live and dead forest patches in a nested plot design along the regulated Rio Grande, New Mexico. Particle size in the associated sediments, competition, and age were analyzed as contributing factors. The entire stand had declining growth between 2002 and 2015. Tree growth correlated strongest with …

Horton Complex Stormwater Analysis And Management Plan, Bradley D. Meyer

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Flooding, water quality degradation and erosion are some of the negative impacts created by poorly managed urban stormwater runoff. Managing runoff is an ongoing challenge for watershed managers because of the constantly changing landscape due to development and redevelopment. The Village of Ruidoso in South Central New Mexico is an example of an urban area that is taking an innovative and progressive approach to stormwater management. The focus of this professional project was to perform a stormwater analysis for the Village of Ruidoso, apply it to the Horton Complex – an old school complex that the Village acquired and wants …

Plant Litter Decomposition Differs With Species And Soil Resources In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland, Andrea Lopez Jun 2020

Plant Litter Decomposition Differs With Species And Soil Resources In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland, Andrea Lopez

Biology ETDs

Uncertainties surround the extent to which diversity can mitigate the effects of climate change and anthropogenic activity on ecosystem functions. In desert grasslands, changes to water availability and soil nitrogen, two primary resources that limit ecosystem processes, can have lasting impacts on nutrient cycling. We used grass litter from Bouteloua eriopoda, Bouteloua gracilis, Pleuraphis jamesii, and Sporobolus spp. to assess the effects of soil resources on single- and multi-species decomposition in a Chihuahuan Desert grassland in central New Mexico, USA. Litterbags were deployed in a factorial experiment that manipulated rain pulse size (5- vs. 20-mm) and frequency …

An A Posteriori Error Analysis Of Stationary Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamics, Ari E. Rappaport Jun 2020

An A Posteriori Error Analysis Of Stationary Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamics, Ari E. Rappaport

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Adjoint based a posteriori error analysis is a technique to produce exact error repre- sentations for quantities of interests that are functions of the solution of systems of partial differential equations (PDE). The tools used in the analysis consist of duality arguments and compatible residuals. In this thesis we apply a posteriori error anal- ysis to the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations . MHD provides a continuum level description of conducting fluids in the presence of electromagnetic fields. The MHD system is therefore a multi-physics system, capturing both fluid and electro- magnetic effects. Mathematically, The equations of MHD are highly nonlinear and …

Recruitment To, And Consequences Of, High-Risk Non-Violent Anti-Regime Campaigns In Autocratic Societies: The Egyptian Uprising Of 2011, Marian Azab Jun 2020

Recruitment To, And Consequences Of, High-Risk Non-Violent Anti-Regime Campaigns In Autocratic Societies: The Egyptian Uprising Of 2011, Marian Azab

Sociology ETDs

This dissertation examines whether the Western-driven model of recruitment to, and consequences of, high-risk activism that McAdam introduced before the internet applies to non-violent anti-regime campaigns in autocratic contexts after the social media revolution. I use the case of the 18-day non-violent Egyptian uprising of 2011 to investigate these topics. I specifically utilize data from the Arab Democracy Barometer survey and other micro- and macro-level sources. I find that face-to-face ties are most effective in recruitment to such movements. Online networks create new forms of dissent, such as online activism. Moreover, online ties are especially useful in mobilizing women. I …

Single-Event Multilevel Surgery Of The Upper Extremity: A Case Report, Elizabeth Mcleod, Lacey Floyd, Justin Bartley Jun 2020

Single-Event Multilevel Surgery Of The Upper Extremity: A Case Report, Elizabeth Mcleod, Lacey Floyd, Justin Bartley

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Single-event multilevel surgery has been used successfully to treat pediatric patients with cerebral palsy for decades; however, it has not been widely used to treat adult patients. Tendinopathies of the arm often coexist, and performing single event surgery to correct one joint pathology may further exacerbate coexisting tendinopathies. Accordingly, performing single-event multilevel surgery in the appropriate patient allows for the correction of multiple conditions of the same limb in a single surgery. Single-event multilevel surgery offers many benefits, including cost savings, convenience for the patient, less potential complications owing to a single anesthetic and hospitalization event, and a shorter overall …

Tibial Lengthening Using A Magnetic Lengthening Intramedullary Nail In An Hiv-Positive Patient: A Case Report And Review Of Literature, Rami Khalifa, Christopher Gerzina, Amr Abdelgawad, Ahmed M. Thabet

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Limb lengthening can be affected by poor bone healing in patients with human immunodeficiency virus. This is a case report of a 56-year-old man with 6.1 cm leg length discrepancy and end-stage arthritis in the hip. The patient had total hip arthroplasty prior to his lengthening procedure. The patient was human immunodeficiency virus positive. This case report describes the experiences of using a motorized intramedullary magnetic lengthening nail in equalization of limb length discrepancy. Treatment for the patient included tibial lengthening with a motorized nail to correct the limb length discrepancy, with adequate bone healing in a patient with an …

Identification And Management Of Injuries Associated With Femoral Shaft Fracture, Brian N. Hodges, Thomas A. Decoster Jun 2020

Identification And Management Of Injuries Associated With Femoral Shaft Fracture, Brian N. Hodges, Thomas A. Decoster

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Femoral shaft fractures are common injuries typically due to high-energy trauma. Injuries associated with femoral shaft fractures include ipsilateral femoral neck fractures, ipsilateral distal femur fractures, ipsilateral patella fractures, ipsilateral tibial shaft fractures, ipsilateral knee ligament injuries, acetabular and pelvis fractures, and small bone fractures. These injuries can go unnoticed, and it is important to recognize and treat these injuries accordingly.

Malreductions Following Intramedullary Nail Fixation Of Femur Shaft Fractures, Jory Wasserburger, Christopher Kurnik, Thomas A. Decoster

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Femur shaft fractures are common injuries frequently treated with intramedullary fixation. Although satisfactory alignment is usually achieved, malreductions can happen in sagittal and coronal planes, as well as along the longitude axis. The causes of malposition with femoral nailing include fracture location, comminution, and suboptimal technique. We identify the most common patterns of malreduction of nailed femu

The Vulcan Sign: A Radiographic And Clinical Indicator Of Plantar Plate And Collatoeral Ligament Injury, Katherine Gavin Jun 2020

The Vulcan Sign: A Radiographic And Clinical Indicator Of Plantar Plate And Collatoeral Ligament Injury, Katherine Gavin

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Introduction: There is no consensus on terminology used to describe the radiographic and clinical findings commonly encountered in second metatarsophalangeal (MTP) instability. We propose the use of a consensus term, the Vulcan sign, to describe the deformity commonly seen in second MTP instability and verify its utility as an adjunct in the diagnosis and treatment of plantar plate and collateral ligament pathology. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated preoperative anteroposterior weight-bearing x-rays of 156 feet of patients who underwent operative intervention for second MTP instability and the presence of a Vulcan sign at the second webspace, defined as more than 50% medial …

Inter- And Intra-Observer Differences In Proximal Fifth Metatarsal Fractures, Benjamin Packard, Kathryn Yeagar, Richard A. Miller, Katherine Gavin Jun 2020

Inter- And Intra-Observer Differences In Proximal Fifth Metatarsal Fractures, Benjamin Packard, Kathryn Yeagar, Richard A. Miller, Katherine Gavin

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Introduction: Proximal fifth metatarsal fractures are common. When using the Lawrence and Botte Classification for these injuries, they are classified as type 1, 2, and 3. Identifying the zone of injury is crucial to guide treatment. The authors hypothesize that interand intra-observer reliability of these fractures is low. Methods: Anteroposterior (AP), lateral, and oblique x-rays of 60 patients with isolated fifth metatarsal base fractures were reviewed. Five physicians evaluated the radiographs and classified the fractures as type 1,2, or 3. Each of the three radiographic views were examined separately. Results were then analyzed for inter- and intra-observer reliability. Results: Sixty …
