Echo-Ct: An Interdisciplinary Videoconference Model For Identifying Potential Postdischarge Transition-Of-Care Events., Mariana R Gonzalez, Lauren Junge-Maughan, Lewis A Lipsitz, Amber Moore
Project ECHO Bibliography
BACKGROUND: Discharge from the hospital to a post-acute care setting can be complex and potentially dangerous, with opportunities for errors and lapses in communication between providers. Data collected through the Extension for Community Health Outcomes- Care Transitions (ECHO-CT) model were used to identify and classify transition-of-care events (TCEs).
METHODS: The ECHO-CT model employs multidisciplinary videoconferences between a hospital-based team and providers in post-acute care settings; during these conferences, concerns regarding the patient's care transition were identified and recorded. The videoconferences took place from January 2016 to October 2018 and included patients discharged from inpatient medical and surgical services to a …

Dectin-1-Mediated Dc-Sign Recruitment To Candida Albicans Contact Sites, Rohan P. Choraghe, Aaron K. Neumann
Dectin-1-Mediated Dc-Sign Recruitment To Candida Albicans Contact Sites, Rohan P. Choraghe, Aaron K. Neumann
Pathology Research and Scholarship
At host-pathogen contact sites with Candida albicans, Dectin-1 activates pro-inflammatory signaling, while DC-SIGN promotes adhesion to the fungal surface. We observed that Dectin-1 and DC-SIGN collaborate to enhance capture/retention of C. albicans under fluid shear culture conditions. Therefore, we devised a cellular model system wherein we could investigate the interaction between these two receptors during the earliest stages of host-pathogen interaction. In cells expressing both receptors, DC-SIGN was quickly recruited to contact sites (103.15% increase) but Dectin-1 did not similarly accumulate. Once inside the contact site, FRAP studies revealed a strong reduction in lateral mobility of DC-SIGN (but not …
Source Localization With Machine Learning, Arjun Gupta
Source Localization With Machine Learning, Arjun Gupta
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Source localization with sensor arrays have found applications across domains beginning with radar and sonar, astronomy, acoustics, bio-medical devices and more recently in autonomous cars and adaptive communication systems. The knowledge of the spatial spectrum not only provide information about the source and interference but also assists in increasing signal integrity and avoid interference. This provides an added degree of freedom in the form of spatial diversity. This research investigates spatial spectrum estimation of waveforms from the signals sampled by arbitrarily distributed sensors. Conventional high resolution algorithms such as root-MuSiC fails to perform accurate source localization due to the reliance …

Strength, Fracture Evolution, And Permeability Changes From Confined Brazilian Tests On Sandstone, Tyler Louis Hagengruber
Civil Engineering ETDs
This research reports on confined Brazilian strength tests and concurrent permeability testing on sandstone. The majority of the tests measured permeability during loading to failure in the confined extension region. Additional testing includes unloading and reloading cycles to detect the development of microcracks and the dependence of permeability on mixed stress conditions. Further testing characterizes fracture networks by observing porosity changes due to microcrack interactions before peak load. All tests involve 5 cm diameter disk-shaped, jacketed samples that are subjected to confining stresses while they are diametrically loaded. Specially designed end caps allow for gas flow measurements. The test configuration …

Early Introduction Of Trauma-Informed Care In A Medical School Curriculum, Anusara Carolyn Ice, Heather Metcalf, Rachel Mnuk
Early Introduction Of Trauma-Informed Care In A Medical School Curriculum, Anusara Carolyn Ice, Heather Metcalf, Rachel Mnuk
HSC Education Days
The long-term effects of trauma are pervasive among patients, manifesting as chronic conditions, maladaptive behaviors, and non-adherence to care. One way to improve health outcomes is through implementation of universal trauma-informed care (TIC). TIC is a strengths-based care delivery approach focused on recovery and healing through safe, collaborative relationships between patients and healthcare providers. Awareness of TIC is essential for practicing clinicians. TIC is often incorporated into discussions related to OB/GYN; however, all specialties care for patients who have experienced trauma. The UNM medical school curriculum does not include focused TIC content for Phase I students. Medical students should develop …

Escaping The Boredom Of Online Learning: The Implementation Of Virtual Escape Rooms, Sarah Patel
HSC Education Days
Educational innovations are necessary to improve student learning outcomes and motivation. However, the COVID-19 pandemic created barriers in implementing in-person strategies to facilitate students’ understanding and application of course material. To promote educational content delivery in online learning, the College of Nursing faculty have implemented revolutionary teaching methods, including escape rooms, to enhance students’ virtual learning experiences. Escapes rooms allow students to apply clinical judgement skills to escape a virtual room by integrating knowledge gained from course content. In person escape rooms promote team work principles for individuals to gather clues to “escape” their room or environment. The same techniques …

Virtual Introductory Lecture Series For First Year Radiology Residents During The Covid-19 World Pandemic, Tim Naney, S Elman, Jennifer S. Weaver
HSC Education Days
Physical distancing requirements of the COVID-19 pandemic can result in increased educational and social stresses on first year radiology residents. Faculty can no longer easily welcome and quickly integrate new residents into the radiology department via social events at the beginning of the academic year due to limitations of physical distancing requirements. Interactions between new residents and faculty/senior residents in the reading room has also been limited due to physical distancing requirements. As a result, we developed a virtual introductory lecture series for our first year residents to introduce them to key elements of radiology education, rotation expectation, and daily …

Creative Activities For Trying Times, Crystal Sanchez, Christopher Nelson
HSC Education Days
Teaching during a pandemic calls for some restructuring of traditional in-person classes and a great deal of creativity. The amount of time that students are spending online has increased dramatically, and with that comes an increased effort to keep students engaged. The traditional case study is a great teaching tool but it can be difficult to manage in a large classroom, and requires a specific progression to answer all the questions. A segmented unfolding case study is one option. Each student group is given a portion of the patient’s story along with critical thinking questions. This allows for the class …

Pathology Research and Scholarship
Hematopathology fellowship education has grown in complexity as patient-centered treatment plans have come to depend on integration of clinical, morphologic, immunophenotypic, molecular, and cytogenetic variables. This complexity is in competition with the need for timely hematopathology care with stewardship of patient, laboratory, and societal resources. Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestones provide a guidance document for hematopathology training, but fellows and their educators are in need of a simple framework that allows assessment and feedback of growth toward independent hematopathology practice. Entrustable professional activities provide one such framework, and herein, we provide proposed Hematopathology Fellowship Entrustable Professional Activities based …
Statistical Modeling Of Hpc Performance Variability And Communication, Jered B. Dominguez-Trujillo
Statistical Modeling Of Hpc Performance Variability And Communication, Jered B. Dominguez-Trujillo
Computer Science ETDs
Understanding the performance of parallel and distributed programs remains a focal point in determining how compute systems can be optimized to achieve exascale performance. Lightweight, statistical models allow developers to both characterize and predict performance trade-offs, especially as HPC systems become more heterogeneous with many-core CPUs and GPUs. This thesis presents a lightweight, statistical modeling approach of performance variation which leverages extreme value theory by focusing on the maximum length of distributed workload intervals. This approach was implemented in MPI and evaluated on several HPC systems and workloads. I then present a performance model of partitioned communication which also uses …
Nature’S Personhood And Property’S Virtues, Laura Spitz, Eduardo M. Peñalver
Nature’S Personhood And Property’S Virtues, Laura Spitz, Eduardo M. Peñalver
Faculty Scholarship
This Article evaluates the strategy of claiming personhood for natural objects as a way to advance environmental goals in the United States. Using the Colorado River Ecosystem v. Colorado litigation as the focus, we explore the normative foundation of the claim—elements of nature are legal persons—and the work personhood is being asked to do by the plaintiff and other environmental activists. We identify three possibilities: procedural work, substantive work, and rhetorical work. Of those, we suggest the plaintiff’s strongest case is rhetorical. We say this not only because it will likely be difficult to convince a judge to extend standing …

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Librarians empower learners to become discerning citizens through a set of diverse skills and literacies. To cultivate critical thinkers, librarians continue to build innovative practices, even as technology rapidly evolves. However, the pervasiveness of misinformation and disinformation, most recently seen in the conspiratorial worldviews of QAnon, challenges librarians to center critical thinking in their information literacy praxis. In this article, we provide a concise overview of QAnon and the problems that contemporary internet conspiracy theories like it pose. We offer an epistemological shift for information literacy, from heuristics to mindsets and behaviors, drawing on disciplines external to librarianship. Finally, we …
Florid Mesothelial Hyperplasia Associated With Abdominal Wall Endometriosis Mimicking Invasive Carcinoma, Edgar G. Fischer, Shweta Agarwal
Florid Mesothelial Hyperplasia Associated With Abdominal Wall Endometriosis Mimicking Invasive Carcinoma, Edgar G. Fischer, Shweta Agarwal
Pathology Research and Scholarship
Florid mesothelial hyperplasia typically occurs in the pelvis, abdomen, or chest associated with an underlying neoplastic or inflammatory process. These lesions are of clinical significance because they can mimic a neoplasm. Early reports were published in the 1970s, but only a few case series of such lesions have been published in the gynecologic pathology literature. Here, we report a case of florid mesothelial hyperplasia with an infiltrative growth pattern, mimicking an invasive carcinoma. The lesion was associated with endometriosis forming a mass lesion in the abdominal wall. Histologically, tubular arrangements and nests of mesothelial cells, some with artifactual slit-like spaces, …

Hereditary deficiencies of protein S (PS) increase the risk of venous thrombosis; however, assessing the plasma levels of PS can be difficult because of its complex physiological interactions in plasma, sample-related preanalytical variables, and numerous acquired disease processes. Reliable laboratory assays are essential for accurate evaluation of PS when diagnosing a congenital deficiency based on the plasma phenotype alone. This report presents the current evidence-based recommendations for clinical PS assays as well as when to test for PS abnormalities.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are an emerging class of long non-coding RNAs with complex regulatory potential that can impact gene expression and function. However, the vast majority of circRNAs have not been characterized and little is known about their function in the brain despite their abundance in cortical tissue. Recent work has focused on circRNAs as biomarkers for disease and therapeutics due to their increased stability since their biogenesis through backsplicing renders them resistant to RNA degradation. CircRNAs are developmentally regulated and differentially regulated in brain disorders including Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and schizophrenia (SCZ). While plasticity-related protein-coding genes have been associated …

Neural Network Based Occupancy Prediction Using Patterns Detected In Wifi Occupancy, Krishna Chaitanya Jagadeesh Simma, Thomas P. Caudell, Susan M. Bogus
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
The role of occupants in building energy management is well established. Occupant information from commercial buildings can function as a metric for the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) loads. Predicting these loads ahead in time could aid in setting up HVAC protocols to minimize wasteful energy demand and improve occupant comfort. To this extent, several frameworks were proposed that use occupancy data collected from commercial office buildings and graduate student offices to predict occupancy. However, the occupancy data collected in these frameworks are controlled and have limited complexity compared to larger commercial spaces such as airports, libraries, lecture halls, …
