Artistic Vision And The Metaphysical Imagination: Toward A Phenomenology Of Aesthetic Consciousness, Audrey Benderman Joseph Oct 1974

Artistic Vision And The Metaphysical Imagination: Toward A Phenomenology Of Aesthetic Consciousness, Audrey Benderman Joseph

Philosophy ETDs

This study treats the subject of aesthetic consciousness in terms of a phenomenological approach to modes of perception which can be said to constitute artistic vision. These include states of awareness variously described in the literature of aesthetics as empathy, aesthetic contemplation, reverie, or negative capability.

The Relative Dominance Of Encoding Attributes In Children's Short-Term Memory, Andrew J. Joniak Jr. Oct 1974

The Relative Dominance Of Encoding Attributes In Children's Short-Term Memory, Andrew J. Joniak Jr.

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Th~ proactive interference (PI) release procedure was used in two experiments to assess encoding, differential encoding, and the relative: dominance of encoding attributes in children's short-term memory. The procedure consisted of Ss receiving a series of memory tests, each of which involved the recall of a triad of auditorily-presented words after a 14 second retention interval. The Ss in the experimental groups received four successive recall tests with triads of words which were homogeneous with respect to a given attribute. After four homogeneous triads, a fifth altered triad was presented. The altered triad words were also homogeneous with respect to …

Hunting By Expectation Or Optimal Foraging: A Study Of Patch Use By Chickadees, John Krebs, John Ryan, Eric Charnov Oct 1974

Hunting By Expectation Or Optimal Foraging: A Study Of Patch Use By Chickadees, John Krebs, John Ryan, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

When a predator exploits an environment in which food is patchily distributed, it has to continually make the decision of how long to stay in a patch. In this paper we examine this question using black-capped chickadees foraging in a large aviary for small pieces of mealworm hidden in artificial pine cones. The results of our experiments show the following: (a) when the birds encounter a long sequence of patches (groups of pine cones) each containing the same number of prey, they do not learn to expect a fixed number of prey per patch (Gibb's hypothesis of hunting by expectation); …

The Molecular Species Of Microsomal Phosphatidyl Cholines From Normal And Polyoma Virus-Transformed 3t3 Mouse Fibroblast Cells., Mary Anita Kirkpatrick Sep 1974

The Molecular Species Of Microsomal Phosphatidyl Cholines From Normal And Polyoma Virus-Transformed 3t3 Mouse Fibroblast Cells., Mary Anita Kirkpatrick

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Cells which are transformed by oncogenic viruses become malignant in their behavior. One aspect of t h is behavior is that the growth of such cells is no longer restrained by contact with other cells of their kind . The loss in contact inhibition is believed to result from structural and functional altercations in the plasma membranes of these cells. Of the may components of the membranes of virus-transformed cells which have been examined, lipids have received the least consideration. In the expectation that altered membrane function is a concomitant of altered lipid composition in these membranes, a study was …

A Study Of The Topological Forms Of Mitochondrial Dna In Akr Mice, Deborah Carol Newman Jun 1974

A Study Of The Topological Forms Of Mitochondrial Dna In Akr Mice, Deborah Carol Newman

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) normally occurs in multicellular animals as a double-stranded covalently closed circular form with a contour length of approximately 5 µ. In addition to the normal monomer length circular molecules of 5 µ, circular forms of mtDNA with twice or several times the length of the monomeric form have been described in several systems. Dimers may be found in two forms: 1) unicircular dimers consisting of two monomeric length molecules linked in a head to tail structure, 2) catenated forms with two or more monomers interlocked as links in a chain. The latter are most commonly observed and …

Temporal Compounds And Attention Theory, Bob Kosiba May 1974

Temporal Compounds And Attention Theory, Bob Kosiba

Psychology ETDs

The major purpose of this experiment was to extend the experimental analysis of temporal compounds to differential operant conditioning, and to study a variety of tasks differing in their difficulty due to the presence of various components and the assignment of reinforcement contingencies. After initial bar-press training in a Skinner Box equipped with a response bar, food delivery cup, and the mechanics to present sound and light stimulation, 48 female albino rats were randomly assigned to 6 groups for discrimination training. All groups were counterbalanced for the assignment of reinforcement to the stimulus configurations. Single stimulus presentation consisted of 1/2 …

Fantasy Predisposition: Its Measurement And Effect On Toy Selection And Use In Kindergarten Children., Virginia Mckinney Henderson May 1974

Fantasy Predisposition: Its Measurement And Effect On Toy Selection And Use In Kindergarten Children., Virginia Mckinney Henderson

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of this study was to investigate two basic questions. Can present screening measures successfully differentiate between children with high and low predispositions to fantasy in this particular population? If so, will the two groups respond differently to toys which vary on the basis of their form and structure, and will the groups differ on certain other behavioral correlates of fantasy such as persistence, originality of story themes and flexibility? The two parts of the study corresponded to the two questions being raised.

A Comparative Study Of The Effectiveness Of Video Cassette And Slide-Tape Presentations For Self-Instruction Of Paraprofessionals., Pauline A. Lunka Jones May 1974

A Comparative Study Of The Effectiveness Of Video Cassette And Slide-Tape Presentations For Self-Instruction Of Paraprofessionals., Pauline A. Lunka Jones

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of this study was first to prepare a self-instructional 35mm slide-tape presentation which duplicated as nearly as possible an existing video cassette presentation, and then to compare the effectiveness of these for in-service self-instruction of Media Center concepts and equipment usage with school paraprofessionals (instructional aides). The presentations covered the services and activities of a Media Center, the card catalog, the operation of the 16mm projector, the use of the tape recorder, the overhead projector and transparencies, and the use of developmental boards. The video cassette presentation utilized six cassettes drawn from the Communications and Education Through Television …

Development Of The Rio Grande Compact, Raymond A. Hill

Publications

Thirty-six years have elapsed since the Rio Grande Compact of 1938, N.M.S.A. Section 75-34-3 (Repl. 1968), was entered into by Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas, and approved by the United States of America. Administration of the Compact since then has been the responsibility of many different persons, few of whom had personal knowledge of the circumstances of the negotiation of this Compact. Consequently, there has been a growing tendency towards interpretation of some of the provisions of the Rio Grande Compact in a manner contrary to the intent of those who participated in its negotiation.

Mr. Hill has intimately connected …
