Returning To Northern New Mexico. A Study Of The Nuevomexicano Lexicon., Guevara Del Angel
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
Spanish in New Mexico prior to the 1900s was the predominant language of the region that began to be displaced with the growth of the English-speaking population during the 20th century. In this dissertation I refer to the Spanish language variety that has had the longest historical presence in northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado as Traditional New Mexican Spanish (TNMS, as per Bills & Vigil, 2008). This study aims to document aspects of maintenance and change regarding TNMS. The traditional heritage variety of New Mexican Spanish is changing in many ways, evolving from what has been documented in the …

The Bearing Earth: Colonization, Conservation, And Political Ecology In Costa Rica (Coto Brus 1948 - Present), Pablo Alonso Arias-Benavides
Latin American Studies ETDs
This thesis presents two questions: How are relationships between people in Coto Brus and the land – specifically, forest – mediated by social, political, and economic forces? How are personal and collective identities expressed through relationship with the landscape? I chose Coto Brus because it is a forested region of Costa Rica which was populated with state support in the 1950s, and because it is my father’s hometown. In order to understand the subjective experiences of Costa Ricans involved in deforestation and reforestation, I performed interviews in the canton, visited conservation sites, and analyzed historical sources. This study combines multiscale …
Tragic Fate And History In Thomas Hardy's "The Return Of The Native", Tristan Pageze
Tragic Fate And History In Thomas Hardy's "The Return Of The Native", Tristan Pageze
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis explores the operation of the tragic in Thomas Hardy’s The Return of the Native by taking as a starting point the formalist approach to the genre of tragedy, before extending its definition to encompass the key concept of tragic conflict. This thesis argues that Hardy’s tragic vision takes for object human history, and especially the effects of new, unveiled knowledge on the human psyche, thus locating the root cause of tragedy in these contingencies. This continuum between individual action and the larger historical causes that shape it is expressed via the narrator’s discourse, and the discrepancy between his …

Coping Mechanisms For Lymphedema: An Analysis Of Patient Experiences, Claudia Admoun, Harvey N. Mayrovitz
Coping Mechanisms For Lymphedema: An Analysis Of Patient Experiences, Claudia Admoun, Harvey N. Mayrovitz
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
Background and objective Lymphedema is a condition caused by impaired lymphatic function. Acquired lymphedema is often due to neoplasia, infection, trauma, or radiation damage. Most patients rely on advice from fellow patients and personal research to manage their symptoms. We believe coping mechanisms for lymphedema can be more streamlined and made easily accessible if the most common effective strategies are determined and collected in a single repository for reference. To that end, we aimed to assess the experiences of lymphedema patients and the coping mechanisms they employed. Methods Feedback from lymphedema patients was obtained using a 19-item questionnaire-based survey distributed …
Validation Of The Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment Among Diverse Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder, Elena R. Stein
Validation Of The Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment Among Diverse Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder, Elena R. Stein
Psychology ETDs
Individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) are heterogeneous in terms of etiology, maintenance, symptoms, and recovery, yet current diagnostic categories fail to adequately capture this heterogeneity. Corresponding to the neurobiological addiction cycle, the Alcohol and Addictions Research Domain Criteria proposes a framework of three core domains disrupted in AUD: negative emotionality, incentive salience, and executive function. The Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment (ANA) is a hypothesized multimodal assessment battery of these three domains, which may better characterize AUD heterogeneity. The current study validated the ANA in a sample of drinkers (N=245) who were diverse with respect to ethnicity and alcohol treatment-seeking status. …

Each year, infections from major foodborne pathogens are responsible for an estimated 9.4 million illnesses, 56,000 hospitalizations, and 1,350 deaths in the United States (1). To evaluate progress toward prevention of enteric infections in the United States, the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) conducts surveillance for laboratory-diagnosed infections caused by eight pathogens transmitted commonly through food at 10 U.S. sites. During 2020-2021, FoodNet detected decreases in many infections that were due to behavioral modifications, public health interventions, and changes in health care-seeking and testing practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. This report presents preliminary estimates of pathogen-specific annual incidences during …

Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, Environmental Quality And Public Health, Suraj Ghimire
Economics ETDs
Using dairy farm data, this dissertation investigates the environmental and health implications of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in New Mexico. It seeks to answer three primary research questions: (1) the relationship between environmental justice indicators and proximity to dairy farms; (2) the overall health consequences of dairy air pollutants; and (3) the viability of implementing an anaerobic digester (AD) system as a potential solution to externality concerns while maintaining dairy farm economic sustainability.
The first study demonstrates that foreign-born populations and Hispanics disproportionately experience emissions from CAFOs, with living near dairy farms or in areas with elevated ammonia levels …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
Fasting is associated with increased susceptibility to hypoglycemia in people with type 1 diabetes, thereby making it a significant health risk. To date, the relationship between fasting and insulin-induced hypoglycemia has not been well characterized, so our objective was to determine whether insulin-independent factors, such as counterregulatory hormone responses, are adversely impacted by fasting in healthy control individuals. Counterregulatory responses to insulin-induced hypoglycemia were measured in 12 healthy people during 2 metabolic studies. During one study, participants ate breakfast and lunch, after which they underwent a 2-hour bout of insulin-induced hypoglycemia (FED). During the other study, participants remained fasted prior …
First In Time: The Place Of Tribes In Governing The Colorado River System, Matthew Mckinney, Jay Weiner, Daryl Vigil
First In Time: The Place Of Tribes In Governing The Colorado River System, Matthew Mckinney, Jay Weiner, Daryl Vigil
Natural Resources Journal
Native Americans are the first inhabitants of the Colorado River Basin and have relied on its water and other resources since time immemorial. However, tribes were not involved in the shaping the Colorado River Compact and its governing institutions, and they have faced uphill battles to secure, protect, and develop their water rights—including the ability to acquire access to clean water for their members. This article begins by explaining the historic role of tribes in governing the Colorado River system. It then reviews ongoing efforts to better integrate tribal needs, interests, and priorities into management decisions, and to support opportunities …

From Austin To Santa Fe: Exploring The Prosecution Of Environmental Crimes Within Epa Region 6, Dr. Joshua Ozymy, Dr. Melissa Jarrell Ozymy
Natural Resources Journal
Criminal violations of environmental law are prosecuted by EPA and DOJ. Despite decades of such prosecutions, there has been relatively little analysis done towards understanding existing patterns in criminal prosecution of environmental crimes, especially on a regional basis. This article analyzes the 287 prosecutions which occurred in EPA Region 6 between 1983–2022, out of the 2,807 total environmental crimes prosecuted by all of EPA during that period. In the selected cases, defendants were cumulatively assessed with over $908 million in monetary penalties, 225 years of incarceration, and 1,032 years of probation. At 43 percent of the selected prosecutions, water pollution …

Let’S Focus On The Fibrosis: Targeting Ccn2 In Dupuytren’S Disease, Alex G. Lambi, Ryan Dahlberg, Tomas Holy, Joseph T. Tarr, Deana Mercer, Steven N. Popoff, Mary F. Barbe
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Dupuytren’s disease is a progressive, benign fibroproliferative disorder of the hands that can lead to debilitating hand contractures. Once symptomatic, treatment involves either surgical intervention, specifically fasciectomy or percutaneous needle aponeurotomy, or enzymatic degradation with clostridial collagenase. Currently, collagenase is the only pharmacotherapy that has been approved for the treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture. There is a need for a pharmacotherapeutic that can be administered to limit disease progression and prevent recurrence after treatment. Targeting the underlying fibrotic pathophysiology is critical. The authors propose a novel target to be considered in Dupuytren’s disease – cell communication network factor 2/connective tissue growth …

Complex Lisfranc Injury In A Professional Bull Rider, Elizabeth Eichman, Stephan Sierra, Matthew Ferguson
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
American bull riding is one of the most dangerous sports in the world, with a high prevalence of injury. Due to the high-velocity trauma that is common in this sport, injuries occur frequently and are often classified as severe despite the use of protective equipment. While Lisfranc fracture-dislocations are somewhat common in elite athletes, open Lisfranc fractures are much less common. Consequently, there are little data concerning recovery and return to sport. This case demonstrates an uncommon presentation of open Lisfranc fracture dislocation and first metatarsophalangeal dislocation in a professional bull rider who was able to return to sport at …

Perioperative Nutritional Considerations In Orthopaedic Surgery: A Review Of The Literature, William Curtis, Timothy Choi, Aamir Ahmad, Christopher Shultz
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Macronutrients and micronutrients play an essential role in the surgical process, beginning in preoperative preparation and extending well into postoperative recovery. It is important that orthopaedic surgeons and their patients understand the physiological impact of the surgical stress response and the ways in which adequate perioperative nutrition can help combat its negative effects. Throughout this article, the authors discuss the important roles of macronutrients, such as carbohydrates, protein, and fatty acids, and that of micronutrients, including zinc and vitamins C, D, A, and E, in the perioperative period. The authors aim to explain the physiological effects of surgery on nutrition …

How Children Make Sense Of Fear Of The Dark: A Qualitative Study Of Russian Preschoolers, Maria Mccready
How Children Make Sense Of Fear Of The Dark: A Qualitative Study Of Russian Preschoolers, Maria Mccready
Psychology ETDs
Children’s fear of the dark—as well as its more extreme manifestation in the form of nyctophobia—is a major problem for many families with smaller children. Different treatments exist for nyctophobia, but no consensus has yet emerged on why these treatments work or on what facets of the treatments are more effective than others. Several methodologies and assessments allow for the quantitative measurement of children’s “normative,” or typically developing, fear of the dark, but most were created and conducted from an adult perspective. How children themselves explain what makes darkness scary remains largely unknown, in large part because children have traditionally …
Social Tolerance, Cooperation, And Constraint Shape Differentiated Social Relationships In Female Chimpanzees, Stephanie A. Fox
Social Tolerance, Cooperation, And Constraint Shape Differentiated Social Relationships In Female Chimpanzees, Stephanie A. Fox
Anthropology ETDs
In this dissertation, I investigate variables that promote and constrain female-female social relationships in chimpanzees, a species where females disperse at sexual maturity, reside primarily among non-kin as adults, and where fission fusion social structure can reveal how female social behavior responds to different social contexts. I conducted my research using a combination of detailed behavioural data that I collected during a one-year field season (2019-2020) and long-term data (2010-2019) collected by the Kibale Chimpanzee Project. I show that female chimpanzees form stable, differentiated social relationships, which reflect active preferences and variation in social tolerance (Chapter 2); females leverage these …

Global plastic use has consistently increased over the past century with several different types of plastics now being produced. Much of these plastics end up in oceans or landfills leading to a substantial accumulation of plastics in the environment. Plastic debris slowly degrades into microplastics (MPs) that can ultimately be inhaled or ingested by both animals and humans. A growing body of evidence indicates that MPs can cross the gut barrier and enter into the lymphatic and systemic circulation leading to accumulation in tissues such as the lungs, liver, kidney, and brain. The impacts of mixed MPs exposure on tissue …
