A Fickle Thermometer Of Womens Health: Carioca Medical Professionals And Gynecology, 1836-1842', Suzanne M. Schadl
Latin American Collections Publications
In English: This essay examines how medical professionals in Rio de Janeiro during the late 1830s relied on language and historical representation to further inscribe gendered, racial, and class distinctions that enabled a select group of men to make women and their personal hygiene objects of study. Medical writers combined experimental studies of race, class, and ethnicity with historical discussions of gender to form and present rhetorical differences in scientific terms. Though many of these professionals themselves as objective, they used linguistic tools to investigate and to prove or disprove their hypotheses, always drawing also from cultural myths, in this …

Neural Networks, Knowledge And Cognition: A Mathematical Semantic Model Based Upon Category Theory, Michael John Healy, Thomas Preston Caudell
Neural Networks, Knowledge And Cognition: A Mathematical Semantic Model Based Upon Category Theory, Michael John Healy, Thomas Preston Caudell
Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Category theory can be applied to mathematically model the semantics of cognitive neural systems. We discuss semantics as a hierarchy of concepts, or symbolic descriptions of items sensed and represented in the connection weights distributed throughout a neural network. The hierarchy expresses subconcept relationships, and in a neural network it becomes represented incrementally through a Hebbian-like learning process. The categorical semantic model described here explains the learning process as the derivation of colimits and limits in a concept category. It explains the representation of the concept hierarchy in a neural network at each stage of learning as a system of …

Awards Annual Report: Fiscal Year 2004, Office Of The Vice President For Research
Office of the Vice President for Research
It is a pleasure for me to release this annual report, which summarizes the University of New Mexicos (UNM) sponsored activities for fiscal year 2004 (i.e., July 1, 2003 - June 30, 2004, FY04). The purpose of this report is to present statistics of FY04 sponsored research, public service and instruction efforts at the main campus, the Health Sciences Center (HSC), and the branch campuses. UNM, a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University—Extensive, is ranked in the top 60 of the nation's public universities and colleges, based on annual research and development (R&D) expenditures (see p. 11). UNM faculty have continued their commitment …

Ranchoapan: The "New Obsidian" City Of The Tuxtlas?, Robert S. Santley
Research Papers
The origin of cities is a subject of major interest to geographers, economic historians, and archaeologists. One view of their development stipulates that cities are built on a rural economic base. In other words, the process is from the bottom up, with centers ultimately emerging to provide a variety of goods and services to a population of rural consumers distributed around them. An alternative view is that the development was from the top down. Centers emerged for any number of social and political, but once present nascient craft specialists manipulated the economic environment, making the rural countryside increasingly dependent on …

Although it is commonly assumed that closely related animals are similar in body size, the degree of similarity has not been examined across the taxonomic hierarchy. Moreover, little is known about the variation or consistency of body size patterns across geographic space or evolutionary time. Here, we draw from a data set of terrestrial, nonvolant mammals to quantify and compare patterns across the body size spectrum, the taxonomic hierarchy, continental space, and evolutionary time. We employ a variety of statistical techniques including "sib-sib" regression, phylogenetic autocorrelation, and nested ANOVA. We find an extremely high resemblance (heritability) of size among congeneric …
Practical Considerations In Interoperability: The Unified Medical Language System, Stuart Nelson
Practical Considerations In Interoperability: The Unified Medical Language System, Stuart Nelson
Historical and Administrative Collection
The Unified Medical Language System attempts to represent major controlled vocabularies in medicine in the same database, facilitating interoperation by meaning. The organizing principle of the UMLS Metathesaurus, semantic locality, can be thought of as analogous to orthography as an organizing principle of a dictionary. Achieving interoperation through semantic locality alone may not be sufficient in some cases, leading to questions of how to represent mappings. Implicit in many of the vocabularies is an information model; that model affects the vocabulary in subtle ways.
