Maintaining Pathogens With Short Infectivity In Seasonally Structured Tick Populations: Relative Importance Of Three Transmission Pathways, Etsuko Nonaka
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Infectivity periods of different tick-borne pathogens in host species can vary widely, and the variation affects how the pathogens are maintained in tick populations. In addition to systemic and vertical transmission, cofeeding transmission has been proposed as an important route for the persistence of pathogens with short infectivity (e.g., tick-borne encephalitis causing viruses, TBEv). Because cofeeding transmission requires ticks to feed simultaneously, the temporal dynamics of tick populations become important. Existing models of tick-borne diseases do not fully incorporate all three transmission pathways (systemic, vertical, and cofeeding transmission) and tick seasonality. We developed a comprehensive stage-structured population model that includes …
Verbal Creativity, Mate Value, And Sexual Selection, Ethan White
Verbal Creativity, Mate Value, And Sexual Selection, Ethan White
Psychology ETDs
The present series of studies examine links between creativity and intelligence with dating and sexual behavior from an evolutionary perspective to better understand the function of human creativity. In three studies, participants (N = 65, 225, 142) completed intelligence tests, male and female mate value surveys, and written creativity tasks. Analysis of the data suggests that creativity does not correlate with sexual partner number but it does correlate with self-assessed dating success and high partner quality, particularly in an older sample.

Cinema Dance: The Development Of An Art Form As Defined By Busby Berkeley's Work With The Hollywood Musical During The Great Depression, Carol Bender
Theatre & Dance ETDs
Dance in entertainment film media, cinema dance, is a hot topic in the current arts world, originating from dance in Hollywood films. Cinema dance developed from the Hollywood musicals of the 1930s, where the camera became a partner in the dance, rather than a piece of equipment that captured dance. The largest contributor to the development of the camera as a partner in the dance was Busby Berkeley. Utilizing technological advancements in film and the growing popularity of the Hollywood musical during the Great Depression, Busby Berkeley clarified the art of cinema dance through the coordination of dance and camera …
Flamenco And Its Gitanos An Investigation Of The Paradox Of Andalusia: History, Politics And Dance Art, Rosamaria Cisneros-Kostic
Flamenco And Its Gitanos An Investigation Of The Paradox Of Andalusia: History, Politics And Dance Art, Rosamaria Cisneros-Kostic
Theatre & Dance ETDs
Andalusia, Spain is considered the birthplace of flamenco. The art form not only embodies but represents the complex, multifaceted Andalusian identity. The southern region is a land of contradictions which includes the Gitano/Roma culture. The Spanish Gitano community laid the foundation for what we now call flamenco. The amalgamation of the cultures which existed in Spain informed the genre. These influences are explored with a thorough analysis of the of the Gitano/Roma nation. I document their journey from India to Spain and unravel the core elements of their identity. I focus on flamenco history and break down the song, guitar …
Formulaic Language And Adjective Categories In Eight Centuries Of The Spanish Expression Of 'Becoming' /Quedar(Se)/ + Adj, Damián Wilson
Formulaic Language And Adjective Categories In Eight Centuries Of The Spanish Expression Of 'Becoming' /Quedar(Se)/ + Adj, Damián Wilson
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
The purpose of this study is to track the diachronic development of exemplar clusters formed by the adjectives in the Spanish expression of becoming quedar(se) + ADJ (e.g. quedar(se) solo to be left alone', quedar(se) espantado 'to get scared'). This approach applies the same system of analysis used by Bybee & Eddington (2006) in their synchronic study of four verb + adjective combinations used to denote a change of state (ponerse + ADJ, hacerse + ADJ, quedarse + ADJ, and volverse + ADJ). Although there are diachronic studies that follow the development of constructions employing usage-based approaches (Israel 1996), and …
An Meg Investigation Of The Differential Responsivity Of The Human Calcarine Fissure And Fusiform Gyrus To The Emotion Of Viewed Faces, Per A. Lysne
Psychology ETDs
Darwin proposed that communication of information concerning psychological state was an evolved mechanism. Much emotional signaling in humans occurs via facial expression. Neuroimaging techniques have identified regions involved in facial emotion perception and, although successively more sophisticated models have sought to explain this processing, results suggest that further development is needed. Neuroimaging research in facial emotion perception is currently focused on characterizing major sources of activation in development of these models. Although facial processing is a visual task, decoding of expression has been theorized to take place not in the primary visual regions of the occipital cortex but later within …

Irrational And Visionary Imagery In Cante Jondo And The Neo-Popular Poetry Of Federico Garcia Lorca And Rafael Alberti, David A. Briggs
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
IRRATIONAL AND VISIONARY IMAGERY IN CANTE JONDO AND THE NEO-POPULAR POETRY OF FEDERICO GARCIA LORCA AND RAFAEL ALBERTI BY DAVID A. BRIGGS B.A., Romance Languages and Literature, Boston University, 1964 M.A., Spanish, The University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, 2002 Ph.D., Spanish and Portuguese, The University of New Mexico, 2009 ABSTRACT Spanish poet Rafael Alberti of the Generation of 27 claimed that 'Surrealism had been practiced in Spain since time immemorial as part of the tradition of popular song and folk poetry' (Rafael Alberti qtd. in Harris 34). What is it that permits applying an early twentieth-century term, 'Surrealism' to the …
Biogeomorphology And Soil Geomorphology Of Small Semiarid Basins, Northeastern Arizona : Influences Of Topoclimate And Climate Variations, Leah M. Roberts
Biogeomorphology And Soil Geomorphology Of Small Semiarid Basins, Northeastern Arizona : Influences Of Topoclimate And Climate Variations, Leah M. Roberts
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
In northeastern Arizona, on the Colorado Plateau, landscapes associated with weakly cemented sandstones are sensitive to Holocene climate changes on millennial to decadal scales. It is hypothesized that these climate changes affect processes of weathering, erosion and plant community establishment on hillslopes in this semiarid environment. In small basins formed at the base of Black Mesa escarpment west of Chinle, Arizona, Jurassic sandstones cemented mainly by clay minerals weather by hydration, favoring relatively high erodibility. Two end member slope forms related to aspect-induced topoclimates are present in this area: (1) transport-limited slopes mantled by 10-20 cm of weathered materials and …
Stable Isotope Sourcing Using Sampling, Erik Erhardt
Stable Isotope Sourcing Using Sampling, Erik Erhardt
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Stable isotope sourcing is used to estimate proportional contributions of sources to a mixture, such as in the analysis of animal diets, plant nutrient use, geochemistry, pollution, and forensics. We focus on animal ecology because of the particular complexities due to the process of digestion and assimilation. Parameter estimation has been a challenge because there are often many sources and few isotopes leading to an underconstrained linear system for the diet probability vector. This dissertation offers three primary contributions to the mixing model community. (1) We detail and provide an R implementation of a better algorithm (SISUS) for representing possible …
Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Modulates Shifts In Global/Local Attention, David B. Stone
Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Modulates Shifts In Global/Local Attention, David B. Stone
Psychology ETDs
The effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on global and local feature processing and cued attentional switch were tested. Anodal and cathodal tDCS were applied to the left posterior parietal cortex while subjects completed a global/local compound feature task. The task required subjects to attend to either the global or local features of compound stimuli while ignoring the features of the irrelevant level. Subjects were cued to frequently shift attention between the global and local features. The processing of global and local features was unaffected by parietal tDCS but attentional shifts were compromised. Anodal tDCS degraded the ability of …
Narrative As Self Performance: The Rhetorical Construction Of Identities On Facebook Profiles, Marianne Leonardi
Narrative As Self Performance: The Rhetorical Construction Of Identities On Facebook Profiles, Marianne Leonardi
Communication ETDs
New ways of creating and presenting the self in the "space" of the Internet are fascinating, but not yet fully understood. Framed in the theoretical literature of Goffman's presentation of the self, and Burke's conception of rhetoric, the study's primary concern is to explain and understand how Facebook users construct identities using narrative fragments on their profiles and the offline effects of these narrative performances. Specifically, this study argues that narratives are a type of rhetorical performance, and that both narratives and identities have symbolic meaning and rhetorical components. While the effects of online identities occur at the macro-level, the …
A History And Development Of The Intercultural Communication Field In Japan (1950-Present), Holly Siebert Kawakami
A History And Development Of The Intercultural Communication Field In Japan (1950-Present), Holly Siebert Kawakami
Communication ETDs
The history of the academic discipline of Intercultural Communication in Japan began at the end of the 1950s, in convergence with the historical context of Japan devastated by war and the social context of a population struggling to navigate a new identity and way forward. Both Japanese and American scholars contributed to the establishment and development of the Intercultural Communication field over the decades. Three research questions were posed for this study: one, why did the Intercultural Communication discipline become established in Japan as the first place after the United States, two, what was it about Intercultural Communication that resonated …
Distributed, Adaptive Deployment For Nonholonomic Mobile Sensor Networks : Theory And Experiments, Jose Marcio Luna-Castaneda
Distributed, Adaptive Deployment For Nonholonomic Mobile Sensor Networks : Theory And Experiments, Jose Marcio Luna-Castaneda
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
In this work we show the Lyapunov stability and convergence of an adaptive and decentralized coverage control for a team of mobile sensors. This new approach assumes nonholonomic sensors rather than the usual holonomic sensors found in the literature. The kinematics of the unicycle model and a nonlinear control law in polar coordinates are used in order to prove the stability of the controller applied over a team of mobile sensors. This controller is adaptive, which means that the mobile sensors are able to estimate and map a density function in the sampling space without a previous knowledge of the …

Athletes As Television Celebrities: Why We Watch; How They Benefit; Must They Be Responsible, Sherri Burr
Faculty Book Display Case
This chapter addresses a number of issues associated with athletes acquiring celebrity status based on their television performances. It first discusses what draws the public to watch sports on television and follow the lives of athletes. Second, this chapter highlights the benefits and burdens that athletes receive and endure from the public participation in their sports as observers on the field and off. This section will also highlight athletes rights to privacy and to publicity. Finally, this chapter addresses the responsibility of athletes, both amateur and professional, to behave in a responsible manner both on and off the court.
