Pino Gate Prairie Dog Study At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico: Mound-Scale Lizard Data (2000-2002), Ana Davidson, David Lightfoot

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Keystone species have large impacts on community and ecosystem properties, and create important ecological interactions with other species. Prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) and banner-tailed kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis) are considered keystone species of grassland ecosystems, and create a mosaic of unique habitats on the landscape. These habitats are known to attract a number of animal species, but little is known about how they affect lizard communities. Our research evaluated the keystone roles of prairie dogs and kangaroo rats on lizards at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico, USA. We evaluated the impacts of these rodents on lizard …

Effects Of Kangaroo Rats On Plant Species Dominance In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1988), Debra Peters, Scott Collins

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Our objective was to evaluate the effects of burrowing activities by banner-tail kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis Merriam) on plant community structure and species dominance for two patch types at an ecotone between shortgrass steppe and desert grasslands in New Mexico, USA. Ten mounds produced by kangaroo rats were selected in patches dominated by Bouteloua gracilis (the dominant in shortgrass steppe communities) and ten mounds were selected in patches dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda (the dominant in Chihuahuan desert grasslands). Plant cover and density by species were sampled from three locations associated with each mound: the mound proper, the edge of the …

Small Mammal Exclosure Study (Smes) Vegetation Data From The Chihuahuan Desert Grassland And Shrubland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1995-2009), David Lightfoot

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

This is data for vegetation canopy cover measured from each of the SMES study plots. Vegetation canopy cover was measured from each of the 36 one-meter2 quadrats twice each year. Animal consumers have important roles in ecosystems, determining plant species composition and structure, regulating rates of plant production and nutrient, and altering soil structure and chemistry. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the activities of small mammals regulate plant community structure, plant species diversity, and spatial vegetation patterns in Chihuahuan Desert shrublands and grasslands.

Individual Variation In Eeg Spectral Power Enhancement And Intelligence, Matthew J. Euler Sep 2010

Individual Variation In Eeg Spectral Power Enhancement And Intelligence, Matthew J. Euler

Psychology ETDs

This study tested the relationship between short-term neuroplasticity and individual differences in intelligence. Twenty-two participants completed cognitive testing and a visual EEG experiment involving exposures to repeated and novel stimuli. Time-frequency analyses of phase-locked (evoked) and non-phase-locked (induced) power showed a small effect of decreasing evoked/induced theta (4-8 Hz) ratios over stimulus exposures, irrespective of condition. Hypotheses that intelligence would relate to an increase in this ratio over exposures were not supported. However, the magnitude of the ratio positively correlated with intelligence; while the amount of induced gamma (30-50Hz) activation pre- to post-stimulus was highly inversely related to g. Results …

Fluctuating Asymmetry, Facial Masculinity, And Offspring Sex Ratio, Melissa Heap Sep 2010

Fluctuating Asymmetry, Facial Masculinity, And Offspring Sex Ratio, Melissa Heap

Psychology ETDs

Research on offspring sex ratios and parental condition indicate that parents in better condition may benefit from biasing their offspring toward sons. While measures of phenotypic quality and offspring sex ratio have been examined in other animals, the current study was designed to look at this relationship within human families. I investigated the relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and facial masculinity, both possible measures of phenotype, and offspring sex ratio within families. The results were mixed. The fluctuating asymmetry of one sibling covaried negatively with the overall offspring sex ratio within their family. The significant negative correlation between the two provides …

Relationship Quality And Men's Oxidative Stress, Leslie A. Merriman Sep 2010

Relationship Quality And Men's Oxidative Stress, Leslie A. Merriman

Psychology ETDs

The association between oxidative stress and quality of romantic relationships was investigated in a sample of 98 college males. Given a postulated life history trade-off between current and future reproductive potential, men currently in higher quality romantic relationships may expend less general mating effort (i.e., less energy allocation to finding, attracting, and competing for new mates) than single men or men in lesser quality relationships. Reduced mating effort may allow greater allocation of energy to anti-oxidant defense systems, and increased resistance to oxidative damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Consistent with this prediction, men who reported being in higher quality …

Neurometabolism And Cognitive Functioning In Healthy Children : A Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study, April Lightsey Sep 2010

Neurometabolism And Cognitive Functioning In Healthy Children : A Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study, April Lightsey

Psychology ETDs

This study investigated the role of sex, mean NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr, and variability in these metabolites in predicting memory and processing speed. This study utilized predictive models including sex, mean ratios of NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr, as well as the standard deviation of these ratios, within tissue type, among voxels in a supraventricular slice. In addition, models included interaction terms between each neurometabolic variable and sex. Tests of memory and processing speed were then regressed in a three-step hierarchical regression onto sex, main effects for neurometabolites, and interaction effects. The regression of memory was significant in the model including interaction terms, …

Nutrient Cycling In Impacted Stream Ecosystems: From Microbes To Watersheds, David James Van Horn Sep 2010

Nutrient Cycling In Impacted Stream Ecosystems: From Microbes To Watersheds, David James Van Horn

Biology ETDs

The conditions found in stream ecosystems are an integration of watershed characteristics and processes. Anthropogenic disturbances are part of this integration and include direct inputs to streams, alteration of riparian areas, and modification of catchment properties which affect material inputs. Impacts to discrete portions of terrestrial watersheds combine as water moves down gradient, transporting the byproducts of catchment disturbances to streams including, nutrients, organic materials, particulates, and toxins. This dissertation explores the effects of disturbance on nutrient cycling in stream ecosystems at three spatial scales: the patch scale includes localized processes and assemblages, the reach scale encompasses tens to hundreds …

Eliciting Abstinence And Improving Retention In A Vocational And Educational Training Program For Young People : A Pilot Study, Julie Steele Seel

Psychology ETDs

There is support in the literature for motivational enhancement therapy (MET) as an acceptable method for achieving abstinence and increasing retention in therapy for the treatment of marijuana and alcohol abuse, and for contingency management (CM) as a useful tool for enhancing both of these objectives when combined with empirically supported therapies such as MET. However, MET combined with CM had yet to be tested with substance using adolescents and young adults enrolled in a substance use program in a vocational and educational training facility. This study examined the effectiveness of an MET and CM program designed to provide opportunities …

Rallying Around The Flag In The Era Of The Traditional Presidency, John Todsen Sep 2010

Rallying Around The Flag In The Era Of The Traditional Presidency, John Todsen

Political Science ETDs

The rally around the flag effect describes the presidents to increase in job approval during and immediately after an international crisis. This project has been built as an attempt to explain why that effect occurs. The literature on the presidency and public opinion point at two determinants for the rally effect: the acceptance of the President as the symbolic leader of the nation and the center of action in the government, and opinion leadership, especially that given by the independent mass media. By examining the development of the rally effect, I tested the relative importance of these two factors. To …

Are Thermotolerance And Heat Acclimation Related Through The Heat Shock Response?, Matthew Kuennen Sep 2010

Are Thermotolerance And Heat Acclimation Related Through The Heat Shock Response?, Matthew Kuennen

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Thermotolerance (cellular adaptations that allow survival after an acute, severe heat exposure) and heat acclimation (systemic adaptations that improve heat dissipation following chronic heat exposure) have traditionally been considered separate phenomena. However, recent studies in animals suggest these adaptations may be related through the heat shock response. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of a standard laboratory heat shock response-inhibitor (QUERCETIN) on established markers of thermotolerance [gastrointestinal barrier permeability, plasma TNF-a, Il-6, and Il-10 concentrations; leukocyte HSP70 content(HSP70)] and heat acclimation [reduced body temperatures, heart rate, and physiologic strain in response to exercise/heat stress] in male subjects (n=8) completing a 7-day …

Environmental Disturbance Of Oligotrophic Bacteria And Effects On Water Quality In Deep Karstic Pools, Andrea Hunter Sep 2010

Environmental Disturbance Of Oligotrophic Bacteria And Effects On Water Quality In Deep Karstic Pools, Andrea Hunter

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Active intervention of humans in pristine water resource environments has caused both surface and ground waters to degrade in quality and natural purification capacity (Geldreich 1996). Groundwater is often considered to be less impacted than that of surface water due to the absence of climate changes and storm water migrations (Geldreich 1996). Shallow karstic limestone areas (less than 30 m deep) have a greater change of surface contamination since surface water runoff can rapidly percolate through areas lacking a protective bedrock layer.

Levinas's Symbiotic Phenomenology Of Infinity And Totality, Christian Wood Sep 2010

Levinas's Symbiotic Phenomenology Of Infinity And Totality, Christian Wood

Philosophy ETDs

I present a novel interpretation of Emmanuel Levinas's phenomenology wherein I argue that his seemingly antagonistic and exclusive notions of "totality" and "infinity" are best understood, rather, as symbiotic, interdependent, and mutually conditioning. My demarche uses close textual analysis, constant reference to Levinas's (admittedly sparse) comments on philosophical method, and an important return to, and then departure from, Cartesian thought in order to advance my thesis that infinity and totality are essentially intertwined and "symbiotic." As such, they are not essentially opposed in any sort of preferential, evaluative, or eliminative sense, to name some prominent (and misguided) caricatures that regrettably …

Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History Of Contraceptives In The United States, 1873—2010, Sarah Ruth Payne Sep 2010

Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History Of Contraceptives In The United States, 1873—2010, Sarah Ruth Payne

History ETDs

I argue in my dissertation, 'Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History of Contraceptives in the United States, 1873—2010,' that through the processes of contraceptive production, consumption, and disposal, over time, the role of contraceptives in human/nature interactions has become more significant and the impact more direct. I examine the production, consumption, and disposal histories of condoms, diaphragms and cervical caps, intrauterine devices, and hormonal birth control. Production, consumption, and disposal of the birth control methods I study have determined physical experiences with both our bodies and with the non-human natural world, but those three processes have also shaped discourse …

Marginality, Mayhem And Middle Class Anxieties: Imaginaries Of Masculinity And Urban Violence In Contemporary Mexican And Brazilian Film, Jeremy Lehnen Jul 2010

Marginality, Mayhem And Middle Class Anxieties: Imaginaries Of Masculinity And Urban Violence In Contemporary Mexican And Brazilian Film, Jeremy Lehnen

Latin American Studies ETDs

Marginality, Mayhem and Middle Class Anxieties: Imaginaries of Masculinity and Urban Violence in Contemporary Mexican and Brazilian Film is a comparative study that explores the confluence of cinematic discourse, violence, masculinity and constructions (or denial) of citizenship in present-day Latin America. My argument is that the thematization of violence and masculinity in contemporary Latin American film intercedes at a symbolic level into social relations that are increasingly mediated through images that depict what is socially permitted. This dissertation considers how film (re)structures perceptions of masculinity and its inter-linkages with cityscapes marked by social and material violence. Violence is at the …
