Effects Of Climate Change Upon Birds In The Mojave And Sonoran Deserts, Harinamsimran Kaur Khalsa
Effects Of Climate Change Upon Birds In The Mojave And Sonoran Deserts, Harinamsimran Kaur Khalsa
Biology ETDs
Climate change has increasingly become an area of concern in relation to ecological communities. In this study, climatic signals were investigated to determine whether bird diversity indices in the Breeding Conservation Region (BCR) of the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts were related (1) to the oceanic/atmospheric systems El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and/or the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO); (2) to regional moisture influences determined by the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI); and (3) to local precipitation and temperature. Specifically, an examination was conducted to determine the relationship between climatic variables for thirteen bird species, total abundance …
Genetic Diversity, Local Differentiation, And Adaptive Evolution In Introduced Populations Of The Invasive Plant Isatis Tinctoria L. (Brassicaceae), Heather L. Simpson
Genetic Diversity, Local Differentiation, And Adaptive Evolution In Introduced Populations Of The Invasive Plant Isatis Tinctoria L. (Brassicaceae), Heather L. Simpson
Biology ETDs
Populations of invasive species are often characterized as genetically depauperate, an inherent consequence of the colonization process. It has also been suggested that species that are able to avoid these reductions in genetic diversity may be better able to adapt to their introduced range. Evolutionary change can play an important role in the invasion process if novel selective pressures drive adaptive evolution. Species that are able to avoid reductions in genetic diversity associated with colonization may be better able to adapt to their introduced range. To better understand the genetic processes following invasion, introduced populations of the invasive mustard, Isatis …

Role Of Cytochrome P4501a1 In Vasoreactivity And Blood Pressure Regulation Mediated By Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, Njotu Larry Agbor
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor involved in the metabolism of environmental pollutants including halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, for example, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-ρ-dioxin (TCDD). The AHR and its downstream target gene cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) are also involved in cardiovascular development. AHR knockout (KO) mice are hypotensive, with cardiac hypertrophy. Additionally, CYP1A1 is involved in the production of potent vasodilator metabolites from omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) metabolism. Thus, we hypothesize that the AHR and its downstream target gene, CYP1A1, both contribute to normal vascular reactivity of blood vessels and to blood pressure (BP) regulation. We generated mice with …
Studies On Spreading Depolarization In Healthy And Metabolically Compromised Brain Tissues, Isamu Aiba
Studies On Spreading Depolarization In Healthy And Metabolically Compromised Brain Tissues, Isamu Aiba
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Spreading depolarization (SD) is a slowly propagating wave of depolarization of neurons and glia. Since its original discovery in 1944, SD has been observed in various experimental settings, both in vitro and in vivo. SD has recently been detected in brains of human patients with various injuries, and a contribution of SD to deleterious consequences of acute brain injury is increasingly accepted. iv The present dissertation work focus mainly on the characterization of SD and cellular events associated with it. Main interests of these studies are on underlying mechanisms that convert non-injurious factors into mediators of acute neuronal injury. One …

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Alters Histamine H3 Receptor Modulation Of Glutamate Release And Long-Term Potentiation In The Rat Dentate Gyrus, Rafael Koerich Varaschin
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder exhibit long lasting behavioral impairments, such as learning disabilities, problems in executive functioning and memory deficits. Currently, there are no rationally designed, clinically available pharmacological tools to circumvent prenatal alcohol-induced cognitive deficits. Recently, using a rat model of voluntary drinking during pregnancy, Savage and collaborators (2010) showed that the inverse agonist of histamine H3 receptors reverses fetal ethanol-induced deficits in learning and memory, without further increasing cognition in control rats. These differential effects and the notion that H3 receptors reside in presynaptic nerve terminals to inhibit neurotransmitter release, led to the hypothesis that fetal …

The Rna Binding Protein Ksrp Destabilizes Gap-43 Mrna To Limit Axonal Elongation In Cultured Hippocampal Neurons, Clark W. Bird
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
The KH-type splicing regulatory protein (KSRP) promotes the decay of AU-rich element (ARE) containing mRNAs. Although KSRP is expressed in the developing and mature nervous system, very little is known about its role in regulating gene expression in the brain. In this study, we utilized in vitro binding and decay studies to examine whether KSRP regulates the stability of the GAP-43 transcript, an ARE-containing neuronal mRNA whose protein product plays a role in axonal growth and synaptic plasticity. We found KSRP destabilizes GAP-43 mRNA by binding to the GAP-43 ARE, a process that depends on the presence of the fourth …

Virtually Present: An Ethnography Of Communication Look At The Shaping Of Social Rules In Small Group Interactions Mediated By Mobile Devices, Pamela Gerber
Communication ETDs
In this study I describe the communication rules that inform how particular bar patrons use mobile device technologies to shape particular types of small groups. Mobile devices have increasing been naturalized into the communicative landscape and the effects of this need to be explored. I focus on a college bar, MVF, to answer the following research questions: (1) What are the sets of rules surrounding mobile device use in small groups at MVF during late afternoons and evenings? (2) What are meaning(s) users and other group members attribute to the use of mobile devices at MVF during late afternoons and …
Energy Conserving Privacy Enhancing Algorithms For Resource-Constrained Devices, Michael Groat
Energy Conserving Privacy Enhancing Algorithms For Resource-Constrained Devices, Michael Groat
Computer Science ETDs
Resource-constrained devices such as wireless sensor networks, body area networks, or smart phones collect confidential and sensitive information about their users. Traditional solutions to protect these data, such as encryption, consume a significant amount of resources to be viable. In this dissertation, I present two energy efficient information collection protocols based on the notion that by relaxing the definition of privacy, such as using indistinguishability, energy use can be reduced. The first protocol, multi-dimensional negative surveys (MDNSs), protects multivariate categorical data by perturbing sensed values to something other than what was actually sensed, and transmits the perturbed values to a …

Distribution Of Uranium And Other Trace Constituents In Drainages Downstream From Reclaimed Uranium Mines In Cove Wash, Arizona, Terri Lynn Lameman Austin
Distribution Of Uranium And Other Trace Constituents In Drainages Downstream From Reclaimed Uranium Mines In Cove Wash, Arizona, Terri Lynn Lameman Austin
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
This study examined the distribution of uranium in drainages in Cove wash in northeastern Arizona. The dispersion of uranium from reclaimed mine sites on the Navajo Nation is not well studied in soils, sediment, and water. During the 1950s and 1960s, the Cove mining region produced relative uranium and vanadium ore. Legacy uranium mines in Cove Mesa were reclaimed in phases between the early 1990s to 1998. Following reclamation, however, in 1999, elevated concentrations of uranium were detected in well, seeps and surface water in the watershed, which are above the EPAs MCL (30 μg/L). In August 2011, solid (sediment, …

Himalayan Policy Research Conference
The Parambikulum Wildlife Sanctuary in the southern Indian state of Kerala was established in 1962 as a reserve and enlarged in 1973 and 1985 to become a 285 square kilometer sanctuary with significant botanical and wildlife habitat. The setting and diversity of animals, including 268 bird species, 39 species of mammals, 61 species of reptiles, 47 species of fish, 16 species of amphibians and 124 species of butterflies, make Parambikulum a tourist destination. Due to its remote location, it has access only through Anamalai Tiger Reserve, a section of Indira Gandhi National Park in neighboring Tamil Nadu. There are no …

Crise Do Natural: Percepções E Representações Da Natureza E Suas Relações Com A Esfera Social Na Novíssima Prosa Latino-Americana, Danielle Murta De Laborde Affonso
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
This thesis approaches the fictional works of three contemporary Latin American authors: the Brazilian writers Regina Rheda, Letícia Wierzchowski and the Argentine author Gustavo Nielsen. In selected works by these writers Humana Festa (2008); Os Aparados (2009) and El Corazón de Doli (2010), respectively, I analyze the literary representation of nature in relation to neoliberalism and globalization in Latin America. My study considers the explicit and implicit values attached to the ecological in contemporary society, how the environment is represented in contemporary literature and how it dialogues with current political, social and cultural trends. The thesis explores how the fictional …
