The Modulation Of Reward To Nicotine And Ethanol By Sex And Stage Of Exposure, Kyle L. Dixon Apr 2017

The Modulation Of Reward To Nicotine And Ethanol By Sex And Stage Of Exposure, Kyle L. Dixon

Psychology ETDs

Tobacco and alcohol are among the most widely used and abused drugs in America, resulting in disastrous health consequences and a massive resource drain on society. Nicotine (the primary reinforcing component in tobacco) and alcohol are often used together, though there is limited research on exposure to both drugs at the same time. The present study attempted to fill this gap in knowledge by examining the reward for a cocktail of nicotine and alcohol in male and female Long-Evans rats with differing histories of drug exposure. The conditioned place preference paradigm was used to examine the effects of sex as …

Functional Neural Connectivity Associated With Moral Processing In Healthy And Antisocial Samples, Samantha Jean Fede Apr 2017

Functional Neural Connectivity Associated With Moral Processing In Healthy And Antisocial Samples, Samantha Jean Fede

Psychology ETDs

Although research finds that brain abnormalities during moral decisions underlie traits that lead to crime, understanding of these neural dynamics is limited. Here we use two samples to explore the role network engagement and components during moral processing. We used independent component analysis and functional network connectivity analysis to examine hemodynamic response during an fMRI task of moral processing. Eighty-four community and 539 incarcerated adult men and women participated; MANCOVA and machine learning algorithms were used to identify individual and group differences in both samples. We found patterns of neural engagement and connectivity consistent with proposed models of moral cognition …

Cultural Belief In The Supernatural From 500 To 1500: Change Over Time, Significance, And Dispersion Of Ideas From Augustine To Shakespeare, Stephanie Victoria Violette Apr 2017

Cultural Belief In The Supernatural From 500 To 1500: Change Over Time, Significance, And Dispersion Of Ideas From Augustine To Shakespeare, Stephanie Victoria Violette

History ETDs

This project is an amalgamation of case studies, arguing that not only did the supernatural permeate every level of medieval society, but that its potential for analysis and interpretation is largely unexplored. These case studies include: an analysis of the Church Fathers works, including Tertullian’s De testimonio animae, Augustine of Hippo’s De cura pro mortuis gerenda, and Gregory the Great’s Dialogi, addressing the variation in these works’ theological ideas about the soul; an analysis of the works of Gregory of Tours (his Liber vitae Patrum and Historia Francorum), which reflect popular beliefs as opposed to those …

"Revealing Reality": Four Asian Filmmakers Visualize The Transnational Imaginary, Stephen Edward Spence Apr 2017

"Revealing Reality": Four Asian Filmmakers Visualize The Transnational Imaginary, Stephen Edward Spence

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation posits that four Asian filmmakers engage in “revealing reality” in unique but interconnected ways that employ innovative narrative and cinematic/visual techniques, including a direct address to the senses and an augmenting of their vision with fantasy or surrealism. My study argues that Hou Hsiao-hsien (Taiwan), Jia Zhangke (China), Tsai Ming-liang (Taiwan), and Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thailand) mobilize this visual and narrative strategy to participate in debates about globalization and to comment on the state of their respective nations, the concept of the nation, and the transnational. The films of each artist are examined in detail; I investigate their stylistic …

Relationship Between Structure And Functional Connectivity Within The Default Mode Network, Andrei A. Vakhtin Apr 2017

Relationship Between Structure And Functional Connectivity Within The Default Mode Network, Andrei A. Vakhtin

Psychology ETDs

We proposed a novel measure of conceptualizing dynamic functional network connectivity (FNC) in the human brain using flexibility of functional connectivity (fFC), which captures the variance of functional connectivity across time. In task-free fMRI scans (N = 122), this measure was demonstrated to correspond to the underlying structural connectivity (SC) within the default mode network (DMN), while static functional connectivity (sFC) did so to a relatively low degree. As SC likely does not develop to facilitate task-free brain function, but rather to integrate information during cognitive engagement, we argue that fFC can estimate the potential functional connectivity exhibited outside of …

The Narrator, The Mute, And The Familiar: Configurations Of Children In War Films, Kiyomi Wilks Apr 2017

The Narrator, The Mute, And The Familiar: Configurations Of Children In War Films, Kiyomi Wilks

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This thesis undertakes the examination of how and why children often figure prominently in films about war. Rather than accept the common argument that innocence is what makes children compelling as victims and objects of observation, this thesis argues that children in war films subvert dominant narratives about war and victimhood by asking questions that pierce through accepted narratives, revealing the child as an agent in possession of an adult knowledge that seems to run contrary to attempts to display the child as a naive innocent. The children in the three movies under examination-- The Spirit of the Beehive (1973) …

Social Risks As Costly Trait Signals, Ruth E. Sarafin Apr 2017

Social Risks As Costly Trait Signals, Ruth E. Sarafin

Psychology ETDs

Costly signaling theory posits that people will sometimes engage in seemingly irrational behavior to show off attractive qualities about themselves. These behaviors may end in or incur a cost to the actor such that only individuals who are highly fit are able to succeed at the behavior, and therefore behavior success is an honest signal of fitness. Previous research has used costly signaling to explain human physical risk taking behaviors such as rock climbing, but the current study seeks to apply them to social risk taking, such as raising one’s hand in class. Should social risk taking prove to be …

Novel Indices To Quantify Freeze Tolerance In Amphibians, Jolene R. Rearick Apr 2017

Novel Indices To Quantify Freeze Tolerance In Amphibians, Jolene R. Rearick

Biology ETDs

We propose Freeze Endurance (Fend) as a new measure of the ability of amphibians to tolerate internal freezing, allowing integration of time and temperature to describe each freeze event. Use of freeze endurance as a descriptor allows direct comparison between individuals, populations, and species, and may be scaled by body size, or other characteristics, to determine if abilities to survive freezing are significantly different between groups. Thermal limit examinations have long suffered from lack of comparability between publications due to differing endpoints, measurements, equipment, and organism availability, despite the value of information yielded by such studies to understanding …

Adenosine Receptor Activation In Spreading Depolarization And Ischemic Injury, Britta Esther Lindquist Apr 2017

Adenosine Receptor Activation In Spreading Depolarization And Ischemic Injury, Britta Esther Lindquist

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Spreading depolarization (SD) is a propagating wave of neuronal activation occurring in the central nervous system. SD is accompanied by depression of synaptic activity and complex blood flow changes. Better understanding the mechanisms underlying these phenomena may be important to elucidate the pathophysiology of human disease, and to develop therapeutic interventions. SD contributes significantly to the morbidity and mortality of thromboembolic and ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and traumatic brain injury. Experiments described in this dissertation were designed to investigate the regulation of neuronal and vascular physiology during spreading ii depolarization and its aftermath. The overall goal of these studies was …

The Effects Of Comorbid Mild Traumatic Brain Injury And Alcohol Use Disorder, Brandi Seaman Apr 2017

The Effects Of Comorbid Mild Traumatic Brain Injury And Alcohol Use Disorder, Brandi Seaman

Psychology ETDs

Objective: Sustaining a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) may influence alcohol consumption. The current study investigated the impact of self-reported mTBIs on alcohol use in a sample of individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) or a history of seeking treatment.

Participants and Methods: 173 individuals recruited for a neuroimaging/genetic study of alcohol abuse completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) to assess consequences of consumption, and the Time Line Follow-back to assess average drinks per drinking day (DPDD). The Rivermead Concussion Scale was completed for each injury reported. The effects of the number of mTBIs (0,1, more than one) …

Kit Carson's Last Fight: The Adobe Walls Campaign Of 1864, David A. Pafford Apr 2017

Kit Carson's Last Fight: The Adobe Walls Campaign Of 1864, David A. Pafford

History ETDs

In the fall of 1864, Brigadier General James H. Carleton sent Kit Carson and about four hundred men on a punitive campaign against the Kiowa and Comanche Indians of the high plains. The resulting battle was one of the largest in the history of North American Indian Wars. Yet this conflict has been relegated to historical obscurity.

In this paper, I examine why Kit Carson’s 1864 Adobe Walls Campaign remains obscure, I measure the success of the mission, and place it in the larger context of nineteenth century Indian Wars, particularly those prosecuted against Plains tribes.

What The Future Holds: The Changing Landscape Of Federal Indian Policy, Kevin Washburn Apr 2017

What The Future Holds: The Changing Landscape Of Federal Indian Policy, Kevin Washburn

Faculty Scholarship

Since first described by Chief Justice John Marshall, the United States has been deemed to have a moral and legal “trust responsibility” to the American Indian tribal nations that gave way so that the United States could exist. For nearly two centuries, the trust responsibility reflected a paternalistic view toward Indian tribes. As the United States has developed a more enlightened policy characterized by greater respect for “tribal self-governance,” tribal governments have experienced a renaissance. Federal policy has moved away from federal control and toward tribal empowerment. As a result, the trust responsibility’s paternalistic features have come to seem anachronistic, …

The L. & H. Huning Mercantile Company: A Case Study Of Mercantile Conquest In The Rio Abajo Region Of New Mexico, 1848-1880, Ricardo S. Gonzales Apr 2017

The L. & H. Huning Mercantile Company: A Case Study Of Mercantile Conquest In The Rio Abajo Region Of New Mexico, 1848-1880, Ricardo S. Gonzales

History ETDs

This master’s thesis is a case study of the L. & H. Huning Mercantile Company, a mercantile partnership in New Mexico during the territorial period. Louis and Henry Huning, a pair of brothers who immigrated to New Mexico from Germany in 1859, established wholesale and retail enterprises in the Arizona and New Mexico territories. Their main storehouse was founded in Los Lunas, New Mexico, in 1871 following the departure of Erhardt Franz to St. Louis.

L. & H. Huning became a successful merchandising business in the Rio Abajo by establishing a mercantile monopoly in Los Lunas. The introduction of free-market …

Forests On The Edge: Forest Restoration And Concepts Of Nature In Northern New Mexico, Jordan W. Stone Apr 2017

Forests On The Edge: Forest Restoration And Concepts Of Nature In Northern New Mexico, Jordan W. Stone

Geography ETDs

Dozens of catastrophic forest fires have impacted New Mexican communities over the last two decades, threatening humans, property, and livelihoods. Ecologically, forest systems are stressed by historically unprecedented tree density, drought, increased temperature, and dwindling ecological diversity, further increasing fire danger. An increasingly common response to these threats is to actively manage New Mexico’s forests using mechanical tree thinning and prescribed fire, with a goal of “restoring” forests to a healthier ecological state. Restoring forests is both a scientific and cultural act. While the science is well studied, land managers often struggle to understand how human values impact forest restoration …

Where The Wild Things Are: Investigating Body Size As A Mechanism For Persistence, Meghan Anne Balk Apr 2017

Where The Wild Things Are: Investigating Body Size As A Mechanism For Persistence, Meghan Anne Balk

Biology ETDs

Body size is a trait under selection. Genetic drift, climate, diet quality, and biotic interactions all select upon body size at the population, species, and community levels. These factors can be important in the context of rapidly changing climate. One of the ways an animal can persist in its environment is through morphological adaptation in situ. Here, I investigate four questions relating to the evolution of body size: (1) what is the limit in body size change in response to climatic change; (2) how does body size influence the thermal tolerances of animals; (3) how does body size evolve …

Use Of Chemical And Isotopic Identifiers To Characterize Ground Water Contamination Near Two Uranium Mill Sites, Central Nm, Mitchell T. Schatz Apr 2017

Use Of Chemical And Isotopic Identifiers To Characterize Ground Water Contamination Near Two Uranium Mill Sites, Central Nm, Mitchell T. Schatz

Civil Engineering ETDs

Chemical and isotopic signatures were used to discriminate between anthropogenic ground water and naturally occurring constituents. The U-234/U-238 activity ratio (AR) was determined in 34 samples from several aquifers underlying two former uranium mills near Milan, NM. Disposal of uranium ore waste into unlined tailings resulted in ground water contamination in the Lower San Mateo Creek Basin area. Ground water contamination from uranium mills have impacted the local ground water for residents down-gradient from the mills.

Previous studies that used uranium isotopes identified activity ratios of mill-derived uranium were near the secular equilibrium of 1, and those from natural ground …
