Seventeenth-Century Spanish Colonial Identity In New Mexico: A Study Of Identity Practices Through Material Culture, Caroline Marie Gabe Nov 2019

Seventeenth-Century Spanish Colonial Identity In New Mexico: A Study Of Identity Practices Through Material Culture, Caroline Marie Gabe

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation explores how seventeenth-century Spanish colonial households expressed their group identity at a regional level in New Mexico. Through the material remains of daily practice and repetitive actions, identity markers tied to adornment, technological traditions, and culinary practices are compared between 14 assemblages to test four identity models. Seventeenth-century colonists were eating a combination of Old World domesticates and wild game on colonoware and majolica serving vessels, cooking using Indigenous pottery, grinding with Puebloan style tools, and conducting household scale production and prospecting. While assemblages are consistent in basic composition, variations are present tied to socioeconomic status. This blending …

Assessment Of Particulate Matter Toxicity And Physicochemistry At The Claim 28 Uranium Mine Site In Blue Gap, Az, Jessica G.S. Begay Nov 2019

Assessment Of Particulate Matter Toxicity And Physicochemistry At The Claim 28 Uranium Mine Site In Blue Gap, Az, Jessica G.S. Begay

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Particulate matter (PM) inhalation is known to have adverse effects on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Community concerns in the southwestern US have been expressed in regions of extensive open-pit hard-rock (especially uranium) mining that windblown dusts may pose an excess health risk. To address these concerns, we have undertaken a campaign to detail: (1) the amount and composition of the PM2.5 in the region, (2) meteorological characteristics, such as wind speed and direction, and (3) and immunological and physiological responses of mice after PM2.5 exposures.

For toxicity studies, C57BL/6 and apolipoprotein E-null (ApoE-/-, a vascular …

Calling All Corpses: An Examination Of The Treatment Of The Dead In Old English Literature, Jessica Troy Nov 2019

Calling All Corpses: An Examination Of The Treatment Of The Dead In Old English Literature, Jessica Troy

English Language and Literature ETDs

The care and disposal of the dead bodies, an unavoidable reminder of one’s mortality, rarely receives in-depth literary attention. In early medieval England, the Anglo-Saxons dealt with corpses but seldom discussed the undertaking in written documents. Instead they focused on the grandiose deeds of heroes like Beowulf and the holy lives of revered saints.

This dissertation examines various genres of Old English literature to identify times when authors discuss corpses and to what end these discussions led. Hagiographers, for example, describe the corpses of certain saints such as Æthelthryth and Edmund at length while the bodies of other saints are …

Dynamics Of Avian Elevational Ranges Reveal Hidden Evolutionary Forces, Chauncey R. Gadek Nov 2019

Dynamics Of Avian Elevational Ranges Reveal Hidden Evolutionary Forces, Chauncey R. Gadek

Biology ETDs

The distribution of life across the Andes mountains reflects historical elevational-range contraction and expansion. Whereas contraction implies specialization, expansion requires overcoming hidden barriers. Three eco-evolutionary phenomena may drive patterns in rates of elevational range evolution: (1) The Dobzhansky-MacArthur Phenomenon (DMP) predicts lower rates of upward expansion with harsher physical conditions, while downward expansion increases with lower diversity; (2) the evolutionary tendency toward specialization predicts contraction increases when ranges are broad; and (3) natural selection for respiratory performance could suppress expansion across mid-elevations due to gene-environment mismatch. We modeled elevational range shifts of Neotropical landbirds. Contrary to the DMP, upward expansion …

Chronic Environmental Exposure To Metal Mixtures In Tribal Populations And Potential Immune System Effects, Jennifer J. Ong Nov 2019

Chronic Environmental Exposure To Metal Mixtures In Tribal Populations And Potential Immune System Effects, Jennifer J. Ong

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Hardrock mining in the United States (US) has left a legacy of mixed metal mine waste sites. Wastes may contain multiple metals of health concern, including arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, and uranium, among others. Mining waste sites are disproportionately located on or contiguous to the watersheds of tribal lands. Due to proximity, and because of reliance on natural resources to maintain traditional diets and customs, Native American communities’ contact with multiple metals is often increased. Two impacted communities are the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe (CRST) and Navajo Nation. Both tribes have expressed concerns that metals in mine waste adversely affect …

The Role Of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Blood Pressure Regulation And Secondhand Smoke-Induced Vascular Dysfunction, Emily Anna Wheeler Nov 2019

The Role Of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Blood Pressure Regulation And Secondhand Smoke-Induced Vascular Dysfunction, Emily Anna Wheeler

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) may lower cardiovascular disease risk by reducing blood pressure (BP). We hypothesized that fat-1 transgenic mice, which convert n-6 PUFAs to n-3 PUFAs, would have improved vascular function in BP regulation and following secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, compared to wild type (WT) mice.

BP was recorded in mice fed an n-6 PUFA, or standard chow diet. On the n-6 PUFA diet fat-1 mice had a lower mean arterial pressure and a greater decrease in diastolic BP when treated with an ACE inhibitor, compared to WT mice. No differences were observed on the chow diet. …

Development Of Mbd Model And Analysis Methodology For Vehicle Design, Alfonso Christopher Ponce

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

This thesis is to provide a new methodology that considers the effects the chassis applies during dynamic load to the suspension and the handling characteristics of a road course vehicle. A methodology in which is described in detail as well as an applied demonstration where literature before this thesis, lacks in replication and serves to establish a basis for multi-body dynamic analysis in this area. Two models to be created, rigid and flexible, and to compare each other to study the effects the chassis torsional stiffness has during load transfer. Ultimately, to assist in the design of a vehicle that …

Novel Biological Super-Luminescent Sensors For The Detection Of Neurodegenerative Disorders, Florencia Monge Nov 2019

Novel Biological Super-Luminescent Sensors For The Detection Of Neurodegenerative Disorders, Florencia Monge

Shared Knowledge Conference

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only disease in the top ten causes for which we have no treatment or cure. The cost of this disease is expected to rise over a trillion dollars over the next 30 years, it affects individuals and it is also a national healthcare crisis. This disease shares pathological hallmarks, protein aggregates, with other neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease and traumatic brain injuries. Proteins are an organism's micro-machinery for transport, defense, storage, and communication. However, in neurodegenerative diseases, the proteins malfunction, change shape, clump together …

Multi-Systemic Heart, Kidney, And Liver Disease Induced By Gadolinium-Based Contrast Treatment, Joshua Deaguero, G. Patricia Escobar, Xochitil Trejo, Tamara Howard, Adrian Brearly, Brent Wagner

Shared Knowledge Conference

Introduction: Gadolinium-based contrast agents have revolutionized clinical imaging. Conversely, there is growing concern of the overall safety of these agents. Once administered there is long-term retention of gadolinium in tissues. The long-term biologic impact of gadolinium retention is if monumental concern to patients and drug-regulating administrations. Methods: Our research team was the first to establish a rodent model of iatrogenic systemic fibrosis using chimeric mice. Wild-type C57/BL6 mice were randomized by sex and weight into contrast treatment (2.5 mmol/kg intraperitoneally, 20 doses over 4 weeks) or untreated groups. Ultrasound (Vevo 3100, FujiFilm VisualSonics) was performed several days-post final contrast treatment. …

The Effects Of Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On The Organization Of Exploratory Behavior By Adult Female Rats, Monica Goncalves-Garcia, Laura Berkowitz, Tia Donaldson, Ryan Harvey, Jennifer L. Wagner, Suzy Davies, Dan D. Savage, Benjamin Clark Nov 2019

The Effects Of Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On The Organization Of Exploratory Behavior By Adult Female Rats, Monica Goncalves-Garcia, Laura Berkowitz, Tia Donaldson, Ryan Harvey, Jennifer L. Wagner, Suzy Davies, Dan D. Savage, Benjamin Clark

Shared Knowledge Conference

A large body of research has indicated that moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (PAE - 60 mg/dl peak BAC) can produce impairments on cognitive processes, such as spatial learning and memory. The neurobiological basis of these impairments is poorly understood but is frequently linked to alterations in hippocampal functioning. Although the hippocampus has a central role in learning and memory, damage to the hippocampus can also produce impairments in locomotor and exploratory behaviors by rodents (reviewed in Thompson et al., 2018). Rodent exploratory behavior is organized around home bases, which serves as central points of attraction from which rats and mice …

Hydrologic And Physiochemical Connection Of Sawyer Fen To Bluewater Creek, Luke Collis Nov 2019

Hydrologic And Physiochemical Connection Of Sawyer Fen To Bluewater Creek, Luke Collis

Shared Knowledge Conference

Fen wetlands are predominantly ground-water fed systems providing refuge for endangered plant and animal species wile contributing baseflow to nearby surface waters. Recent EPA rollbacks on clean water protections are going to have an effect on fens as they target headwater streams, Western rivers and nearby wetlands by emphasizing the hydrological disconnect wetlands have with other bodies of water. Previous studies show that fens are actually hydrologically connected to other surface waters through sub-surface flow and have physiochemical effects on nearby surface waters such as lakes, streams and rivers. Collaboration with the United States Forest Service has allowed us to …

Classifying Livestock Grazing Behavior And Gis-Modeling Potential Cumulative Risks From Exposure To Abandoned Uranium Mine Waste In The Cove Wash Watershed, Arizona, Usa, Zhuoming Liu Nov 2019

Classifying Livestock Grazing Behavior And Gis-Modeling Potential Cumulative Risks From Exposure To Abandoned Uranium Mine Waste In The Cove Wash Watershed, Arizona, Usa, Zhuoming Liu

Shared Knowledge Conference

Abandoned uranium mines (AUMs) are sources of metals and radioactive substances that are harmful to human health. There are 50 AUMs in the Cove Wash Watershed; as a result, community members are concerned that when domesticated sheep, goat and cattle graze on or near these features they are exposed to harmful substances. Sheep in particular are culturally important and consumption of meat and organs may result in human exposure and potential health impacts. As part of a larger ongoing research project, this thesis examines the geospatial and temporal grazing patterns of domesticated livestock to use GIS to model potential for …

Modeling Mastitis Reveals Relative Impact Of (A)Symptomatic Infectivity, O. Liota Weinbaum, Helen J. Wearing Nov 2019

Modeling Mastitis Reveals Relative Impact Of (A)Symptomatic Infectivity, O. Liota Weinbaum, Helen J. Wearing

Shared Knowledge Conference

Despite widespread compliance with control recommendations, chronic infectious disease remains problematic in animal agriculture. Efforts to disrupt transmission target symptomatic individuals, but disease persists at the population level. Staphylococcus aureus mastitis in dairy cows is a painful inflammation of the udder that reduces milk volume and quality. The popularly targeted transmission mechanism is contact between the milk of symptomatic cows and the udders of susceptible cows via milking equipment. A common control practice is to milk symptomatic cows last, known as the Milk Last Intervention (MLI). However, asymptomatic cows are also infectious. We suspect that they play an important role …

Climatic Niches Of Desert Plant Phenology, Alesia Hallmark, Jade Mclaughlin, Jenn Rudgers Nov 2019

Climatic Niches Of Desert Plant Phenology, Alesia Hallmark, Jade Mclaughlin, Jenn Rudgers

Shared Knowledge Conference

Plant phenology - the timing of important life events such as leaf growth or reproduction - can be cued by many abiotic factors. In aridlands, plant growth and reproduction may be controlled by photoperiod, stochastic rain events, or temperature. Variation in these environmental variables may lead some species to "boom" in good years or fail to grow or reproduce in extreme seasons or years, especially in aridlands. Here, we leverage plant phenology and biomass datasets to study the intra- and interannual variation in flowering communities at three semi-arid biomes. We relate indices such as diversity, abundance, and synchronicity to site-specific …

Altered Proteasome Expression And Nuclear Factor (Erythroid-Derived 2)-Like Signaling In Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis, Kara Leasure Shanley Nov 2019

Altered Proteasome Expression And Nuclear Factor (Erythroid-Derived 2)-Like Signaling In Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis, Kara Leasure Shanley

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex neurological disorder characterized by the interactions between heightened inflammation, oxidative stress and neurodegeneration. We and others have previously demonstrated that proteasome dysfunction and its consequences are also important factors in the pathology of both MS and its rodent model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). While proteasome subunit alterations in EAE have been observed, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. The first goal of this dissertation was to characterize the mechanisms that regulate proteasome expression and composition in neural cells in EAE and in vitro.

Immunohistochemical analysis of the EAE spinal cord shows changes in …

The Role Of Adaptive Immunity In Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension, Levi David Maston Nov 2019

The Role Of Adaptive Immunity In Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension, Levi David Maston

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Inflammation is a prominent pathologic feature in pulmonary arterial hypertension as demonstrated by pulmonary vascular infiltration of inflammatory cells, including T and B lymphocytes. However, the contribution of the adaptive immune system is not well characterized in pulmonary hypertension (PH) caused by chronic hypoxia (CH). Inflammatory cells, through various mechanisms, have the capability to increase pulmonary vascular resistance in various disease states. CD4+T cells have the potential to play a significant role in the disease process initiated by hypoxia. CD4+T cells are largely responsible for orchestrating downstream immune processes and are critical in focusing and amplifying …

From Cymatics To Sound Therapy: Their Role In Spirituality And Consciousness Research, Victor Christianto, Kasan Susilo, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Sound is one of the types of waves that can be felt by the sense of hearing (ears). In physics, the definition of sound is something that is produced from objects that vibrate. Objects that produce sound are called sound sources. The sound source that vibrates will vibrate the molecules into the air around it. Sound is mechanical compression or longitudinal waves that propagate through the medium. This medium or intermediate agent can be liquid, solid, gas. So, sound waves can propagate for example in water, coal, or air. Most sounds are a combination of various vibratory signals composed of …

Quantifying The Extent Of Wildfire Impacted Streams In The Western United States, Grady Ball Oct 2019

Quantifying The Extent Of Wildfire Impacted Streams In The Western United States, Grady Ball

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Beginning in the mid-1980s, the number of fires and acres burned by wildfire in the United States has grown at an explosive rate. Several factors, anthropogenic and natural, have converged to create a new era of high frequency, high intensity fires, which is predicted to continue until at least mid-century. Investigations into wildfire impacts have largely focused on post-fire impacts on terrestrial systems, while effects on aquatic ecosystems have been underrepresented. The growing threat of fire to streams has accelerated the need for germane information regarding the spatial extent of fire impacts on watersheds and post-fire impacts to aquatic systems. …

Mechanisms Of Pathogen Invasion Into The Central Nervous System, Matthew D. Cain, Hamid Salimi, Michael S. Diamond, Robyn S. Klein Sep 2019

Mechanisms Of Pathogen Invasion Into The Central Nervous System, Matthew D. Cain, Hamid Salimi, Michael S. Diamond, Robyn S. Klein

Pathology Research and Scholarship

CNS infections continue to rise in incidence in conjunction with increases in immunocompromised populations or conditions that contribute to the emergence of pathogens, such as global travel, climate change, and human encroachment on animal territories. The severity and complexity of these diseases is impacted by the diversity of etiologic agents and their routes of neuroinvasion. In this review, we present historical, clinical, and molecular concepts regarding the mechanisms of pathogen invasion of the CNS. We also discuss the structural components of CNS compartments that influence pathogen entry and recent discoveries of the pathways exploited by pathogens to facilitate CNS infections. …

Effect Of A Learned-Threat On Pain Perception And Behaviors, Eric Kruger Aug 2019

Effect Of A Learned-Threat On Pain Perception And Behaviors, Eric Kruger

Psychology ETDs

Pain is an adverse experience and a motivating force which allows for effective responding to environmental threats. There has been limited research in how pain related consequences can be learned outside of direct experience. The purpose of this study was to investigate if a non-painful threatening stimulus can modulate pain behavior. Forty-three male participants were trained via a computer task to respond to a threatening visual symbol (i.e. learned-threat). Participants also completed a painful task, a cold-pressor task (CPT), prior to and after threat training and were randomly assigned to threat/non-threat conditions during a CPT after the threat training. Repeated …

A Comparison Of Cave Microbial Communities To Cave Roosting Bat Microbiota In El Malpais National Monument, Usa, Nicole A. Caimi

Biology ETDs

The arrival of white-nose syndrome (WNS), a devastating fungal disease, has highlighted the need to better understand bat microbiota and how bats acquire their microbiota. To address this need, we investigated how bat microbiota compare to microbiota from the cave walls in two El Malpais National Monument caves. The external surfaces of six roosting bats from each cave, representing four different bat species, and their associated microbial mats were sampled. One to three air samples were taken in each cave. Samples were sequenced using Illumina MiSeq sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene for bacterial diversity and the ITS region for …
