Meat is an important food for human consumption. Its consumption is associated with economic development, so that the more meat consumed, the higher the level of quality of life or index of wealth attributed to a population. This consideration has led, during the second half of the 20th century, to a greater consumption of meat. To prepare different dishes requires an adequate knowledge of cutting meat, so ignoring this aspect would be contradictory with gastronomy. In Ecuador, and particularly in the Patate canton, there is a lack of knowledge about the types of cuts that can be made with meat, …

Von Willebrand Factor As A Thrombotic And Inflammatory Mediator In Critical Illness, William E. Plautz, Zachary A. Matthay, Marian A. Rollins-Raval, Jay S. Raval, Lucy Z. Kornblith, Matthew D. Neal Jun 2020

Von Willebrand Factor As A Thrombotic And Inflammatory Mediator In Critical Illness, William E. Plautz, Zachary A. Matthay, Marian A. Rollins-Raval, Jay S. Raval, Lucy Z. Kornblith, Matthew D. Neal

Pathology Research and Scholarship

The endothelial exocytosis of high-molecular-weight multimeric von Willebrand factor (vWF) may occur in critical illness states, including trauma and sepsis, leading to the sustained elevation and altered composition of plasma vWF. These critical illnesses involve the common process of sympathoadrenal activation and loss of the endothelial glycocalyx. As a prothrombotic and proinflammatory molecule that interacts with the endothelium, the alterations exhibited by vWF in critical illness have been implicated in the development and damaging effects of downstream pathologies, such as disseminated intravascular coagulation and systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Given the role of vWF in these pathologies, there has been a …

In the world, natural medicine is increasingly appreciated as a complement to conventional medicine that treats diseases with industrially produced drugs. Natural medicine is cheaper, more accessible than the other one; it usually has fewer contraindications and also carries empirical and traditional knowledge. In Ecuador it is a very popular alternative for the population. “TIENS” Company produces natural medicines, which has been facing the difficulty that its sales are appreciably decreasing. That is why the company performs an analysis to increase the sale levels of produced medicines. To perform the evaluation of the alternatives, the neutrosophic AHP-SWOT method is used. …

Antagonizing Serotonin 2a (5-Ht2a) Receptors Attenuates Methamphetamine-Induced Reward And Blocks Methamphetamine-Induced Anxiety-Like Behaviors In Adult Male Rats, John T. Madden May 2020

Antagonizing Serotonin 2a (5-Ht2a) Receptors Attenuates Methamphetamine-Induced Reward And Blocks Methamphetamine-Induced Anxiety-Like Behaviors In Adult Male Rats, John T. Madden

Psychology ETDs

Methamphetamine (Meth) is a highly addictive and widely abused psychostimulant. Research indicates that the selective 5-HT2A receptor antagonist M100907 attenuates several psychostimulant-induced behaviors, including conditioned place preference (CPP). However, these findings have not yet been extended to Meth. The present study investigated the effects of M100907 on the acquisition of Meth-CPP and Meth-induced anxiety.

Adult male rats were tested using an unbiased two-chamber apparatus across eight consecutive days. Prior to Meth administration, rats were pretreated with M100907 and placed into their initially non-preferred chamber. After four Meth conditioning sessions, the effects of M100907 on Meth-induced changes in CPP were …

"Where The Land Ends": Knowing And Governing The Limits Of Argentina's Soy Boom, Geneva Smith May 2020

"Where The Land Ends": Knowing And Governing The Limits Of Argentina's Soy Boom, Geneva Smith

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation is about how agricultural biotechnology was invoked in Argentina to rebuild the state and the economy after the 2001 economic crisis, which I approach by making visible the social lives of those experiencing the unintended consequences of a large-scale agrarian transformation. My starting point is to try to understand the paradoxical way that a leftist political project, Kirchnerismo, relied on and promoted an export driven soy boom as a way to rebuild the state after the 2001 economic crisis. While I do give significant attention to the high level state and industry practices, my goal is to examine …

Ecologically Driven Changes In Subsistence Strategies: An Examination Of Bone Cross-Sectional Geometrical Properties In Hunter-Gatherers From Australia And Early Agriculturists From Belize, Ethan C. Hill

Anthropology ETDs

The primary purpose of this dissertation was to examine how changes to ecological context can urge subsistence level populations to adopt new subsistence strategies. This was accomplished by using metrics of bone strength to infer temporal behavior change in Holocene (10,000 BP – present) skeletal samples from southern Australia and southern Belize. The first paper, An Examination of the Cross-sectional Geometrical Properties of the Long Bone Diaphyses of Holocene Foragers from Roonka, South Australia, was written in collaboration with Osbjorn Pearson, Arthur Durband, Keryn Walshe, Kristian Carlson, and Frederick Grine. We compared long bone data for 69 individuals at Roonka …

Exosomal Secretion Of A Psychosis-Altered Microrna Regulates Glutamate Receptor Expression; Effects Of Antipsychotics And Maternal Immune Activation, Stephen Kwaku Amoah May 2020

Exosomal Secretion Of A Psychosis-Altered Microrna Regulates Glutamate Receptor Expression; Effects Of Antipsychotics And Maternal Immune Activation, Stephen Kwaku Amoah

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

MicroRNAs are a subcategory of evolutionarily conserved small non-coding RNAs that are altered in psychiatric conditions. The ability of small secretory microvesicles known as exosomes to influence neuronal and glial function via their microRNA (miRNA) cargo has positioned them as a novel and effective method of cell-to-cell communication. Inflammation, which is evident in schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD), and antipsychotics usage may alter miRNA expression in the brain. However, little is known about the role of exosome-secreted miRNAs in the regulation of neuronal gene expression and their relevance for SCZ and BD. Here, we used miRNA profiling and qRT-PCR …

Characterization Of And Cellular Mechanisms Underlying Spinal Non-Viral Interleukin-10 Gene Therapy Formulated With D-Mannose For Treatment Of Peripheral Neuropathic Pain, Arden Grace Vanderwall

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Anti-inflammatory intrathecal non-viral interleukin-10 (IL-10) gene therapy provides enduring relief of chronic pain in numerous animal pain models. Co-administration of the mannose receptor (MR) ligand D-mannose (DM) improves non-viral IL-10 gene therapeutic efficacy, but questions remain regarding which pain-relevant tissues are critical for non-viral transgene expression resulting in long-lasting pain relief. Additionally, the role of endogenous IL-10 in non-viral IL-10 therapeutic effects is completely unknown.

Chapter I is an Introduction to the studies detailed in this dissertation, providing a historical perspective of the field of neuroinflammation and a framework upon which neuroimmune processes intersect with mechanisms underlying pathological pain. The …

Translating Touches: New Approaches For Modeling And Rescuing Executive Function Deficits After Prenatal Alcohol Exposure, Johnny A. Kenton May 2020

Translating Touches: New Approaches For Modeling And Rescuing Executive Function Deficits After Prenatal Alcohol Exposure, Johnny A. Kenton

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Background: With a recent meta-analysis indicating that 9.8% of women worldwide consume alcohol during pregnancy, understanding the effects of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is critical for both identifying and treating those afflicted. Traditional preclinical research investigating the behavioral effects of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as FASD, has utilized tasks designed for specific animal models. For this reason, preclinical research into FASD requires a shift into clinically relevant behavioral testing. One such method involves touch-sensitive screens integrated into an operant box to emulate clinical computer-based tasks, such as the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery.

Methods: Here, we utilized a mouse model …

Factors Which Influence The Education Of Local Anesthesia In Dental Hygiene, Angela D. Cook, Angela D. Cook May 2020

Factors Which Influence The Education Of Local Anesthesia In Dental Hygiene, Angela D. Cook, Angela D. Cook

Dental Hygiene ETDs

ABSTRACT Dental hygienists, like most students, learn according to formal curriculum that is defined by goals, competencies, and required subject matter for examinations.1 They also learn through an intense socialization process known as “the hidden curriculum”. The “hidden curriculum” is not defined in student textbooks nor classroom lectures, but is demonstrated through case studies, research, and an experience shared between colleagues.1 The purpose of this study was to assess the determining factors that influence what dental hygiene instructors are teaching hygiene students on the use of articaine when administering dental blocks, and to assess if the “hidden curriculum” …

A Review Of Major Role Of Vitamin D3 In Human Immune System And Its Possible Use For Novel Corona Virus Treatment, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

the evidences showing major role of Vitamin D3 in human immune system and its potential use for novel corona virus treatment. Our argument is based on research finding that corona virus has viral envelope glycoproteins. In this regard, Vitamin D3 proves to offer various beneficial effects, including immunomodulatory effect, in order to break the glycoproteins envelope of the virus. One of the greatest benefit of vitamin D3 is the fact that it is easy to get 10,000 - 20,000 IU of daily intake requirement, by sunbathing for more or less twenty minutes. Such a method is likely applicable in many …
