Demystifying The Scholarly Publishing Landscape, Eleta Exline, Emily Poworoznek, Patricia Condon Mar 2021

Demystifying The Scholarly Publishing Landscape, Eleta Exline, Emily Poworoznek, Patricia Condon

University Library Scholarship

The scholarly publishing landscape has grown exponentially in size, scope and complexity within the last decade. Since the number and type of publishing outlets have exploded, researchers now need to consider practical and ethical issues such as predatory journals, open access, preprints, publishing data and sponsor obligations when making publication decisions. Further, these issues may be compounded by interdisciplinary research collaborations. Presenters will provide an overview of the contemporary scholarly publishing landscape and the different components. They will also help researchers identify key questions to ask during different stages of the research process, highlight differences that may bear on interdisciplinary …

Oral Exams In Shift To Remote Learning, Mihaela Sabin, Karen H. Jin, Adrienne Smith Mar 2021

Oral Exams In Shift To Remote Learning, Mihaela Sabin, Karen H. Jin, Adrienne Smith

Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship

In this experience report paper we present our experience with the development of oral assessments as final examinations in three introductory computing courses. The choice of this type of summative assessment was prompted by the emergency remote instruction instituted in the middle of the Spring 2020 semester, across colleges and universities in the U.S., due to the coronavirus pandemic. The principles that guided our oral assessment design were: to develop a more comprehensive measure of student competence and mitigate exam cheating; to facilitate communication and workplace skills through student-teacher interaction; and to alleviate negative emotions associated with traditional summative assessments. …

Estimating The Loss Reduction Effects Of Disaster Preparedness: An Empirical Study Of U.S. Coastal States, Qing Miao, Meri Davlasheridze Mar 2021

Estimating The Loss Reduction Effects Of Disaster Preparedness: An Empirical Study Of U.S. Coastal States, Qing Miao, Meri Davlasheridze

Coastal Response Research Center

This research is one of the first to estimate the loss-reduction benefit of government investments in community-level disaster preparedness. Based on empirical, observational data, our approach is different from most disaster-related benefit-cost analyses using probabilistic loss estimation models. Drawing upon disaster aid data, we are able to distinguish preparedness from mitigation projects, develop more precise estimates of the effect of preparedness spending, and also compare the cost-effectiveness of different types of disaster projects and programs (preparedness vs. mitigation). With a particular focus on coastal areas, this project sheds light on the benefits of preparedness for coastal hazards (e.g., floods, hurricanes, …

Electronic Transitions In Rb2+ Dimers Solvated In Helium, Simon Albertini, Paul Martini, Arne Schiller, Harald Schöbel, Elham Ghavidel, Milan Ončák, Olof E. Echt, Paul Scheier

Faculty Publications

We have measured depletion spectra of the heteronuclear (85Rb87Rb+) dimer cation complexed with up to 10 He atoms. Two absorption bands are observed between 920 and 250 nm. The transition into the repulsive 12Sigmau+ state of HeRb2+ gives rise to a broad feature at 790 nm (12650 cm–1); it exhibits a blueshift of 98 cm–1 per added He atom. The transition into the bound 1 2Piu state of HeRb2+ reveals vibrational structure with a band head at < 15522 cm–1, a harmonic …

Geomorphometric Descriptions Of Archipelagic Aprons Off The Southern Flanks Of French Frigate Shoals And Necker Island Edifices, Northwest Hawaiian Ridge, James V. Gardner, Brian R. Calder, Andrew A. Armstrong

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

This study describes the geomorphometries of archipelagic aprons on the southern flanks of the French Frigate Shoals and Necker Island edifices on the central Northwest Hawaiian Ridge that are hotspot volcanoes that have been dormant for 10–11 m.y. The archipelagic aprons are related to erosional headwall scarps and gullies on landslide surfaces but also include downslope gravitational features that include slides, debris avalanches, bedform fields, and outrunners. Some outrunners are located 85 km out onto the deep seafloor in water depths of 4900 m. The bedforms are interpreted to be the result of slow downslope sediment creep rather than products …

Change Of Administration Leads To Dramatic Decline In Consumer Confidence In Granite State 3/1/2021, Unh Survey Center Mar 2021

Change Of Administration Leads To Dramatic Decline In Consumer Confidence In Granite State 3/1/2021, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Economic optimism in New Hampshire has dropped significantly following the election of Joe Biden. Optimism among Republicans has fallen precipitously while optimism among Democrats has increased only marginally. This has led to some measures of consumer confidence reaching or nearing all-time lows. However, many residents express ambivalence about the economy and foresee mixed or uncertain conditions in the future. Nearly half of state residents plan to spend a new stimulus check if they receive one while the other half plan to save the money.

The goal of the study is to understand approaches and challenges associated with teaching data and delineate resources and services needed to support this work. The study at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) is connected to a suite of parallel studies being developed locally at twenty-three other higher education institutions. Ithaka S+R has been hired to coordinate this parallel …

Peer Conversation About Substance Use, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore Feb 2021

Peer Conversation About Substance Use, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore

Communication

What happens when a friend starts talking about her own substance use and misuse? This article provides the first investigation of how substance use is spontaneously topicalized in naturally occurring conversation. It presents a detailed analysis of a rare video-recorded interaction showing American English-speaking university students talking about their own substance (mis)use in a residential setting. During this conversation, several substance (mis)use informings are disclosed about one participant, and this study elucidates what occasions each disclosure, and how participants respond to each disclosure. This research shows how participants use casual conversation to offer important substance (mis)use information to their friends …

Nearly Half Of Granite State Seniors Say They Have Received At Least One Vaccine Dose, Minimal Side Effects Reported 2/26/2021, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

One in five New Hampshire residents - and nearly half of those aged 65 and older - report receiving at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Most of those who have not been vaccinated plan to do so when it is available to them, but one quarter of state residents continue to say they will probably or definitely not get vaccinated. Nearly three-quarters of those who have received at least one dose say they had no side effects or mild side effects. Partisan differences in confidence in the vaccine and the trustworthiness of science agencies like the CDC have …

Identifying Differences Between Anna Karenina Translations: Midway Findings And Next Steps, Sarah H. Theimer Feb 2021

Identifying Differences Between Anna Karenina Translations: Midway Findings And Next Steps, Sarah H. Theimer

Faculty Publications

A Presentation at the Connecticut Digital Humanities 2021 Conference. Translations are one way that people learn about unfamiliar cultures. Creating a translation is complicated, as words often have different connotations in different cultures that must be understood and conveyed. A good translator pays attention to the style, language and vocabulary unique to the two languages. Translators often differ when deciding how to convey the original work’s meanings, images and themes. Many prominent foreign language titles have been addressed by different translators. In the case of Anna Karenina, Constance Garnett is the most famous and commonly read translation. In “The Translation …
