This series of events brings Indigenous perspectives from 22 Indigenous speakers across the U.S. and Arctic regions to discussions of sustainable futures within the New Hampshire community. There is growing movement in the academic community to understand how Indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage can deepen our thinking about sustainable futures. While most researchers recognize that anthropogenic climate change and other sustainability challenges require humanistic as well as scientific approaches, many have yet to thoroughly understand the colonial legacies that initiated many of these sustainability problems and continue to impede our study and solutions. The 2020-2021 Sidore Series was designed to …

Modest Population Gains, But Growing Diversity In New Hampshire With Children In The Vanguard, Kenneth M. Johnson
Modest Population Gains, But Growing Diversity In New Hampshire With Children In The Vanguard, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this brief, author Kenneth Johnson reports that New Hampshire’s population grew by a modest 4.6 percent during the past decade to 1,377,500 in April 2020. In contrast, the number of minority residents, defined as those who were other than non-Hispanic Whites, increased by 74.4 percent to 176,900 in 2020. Minority residents now represent 12.8 percent of the state’s population compared to 7.5 percent (101,400) in 2010. Though the minority population grew, a substantial majority of the state’s population remains non-Hispanic White.
Hispanics are the largest minority population in New Hampshire with 59,500 residents, or 4.3 percent of the population. …

Microbial Activity Responses To Water Stress In Agricultural Soils From Simple And Complex Crop Rotations, Jorg Schnecker, D. Boone Meeden, Francisco Calderon, Michel Cavigelli, R. Michael Lehman, Lisa K. Tiemann, A. Stuart Grandy

Increasing climatic pressures such as drought and flooding challenge agricultural systems and their management globally. How agricultural soils respond to soil water extremes will influence biogeochemical cycles of carbon and nitrogen in these systems. We investigated the response of soils from long-term agricultural field sites under varying crop rotational complexity to either drought or flooding stress. Focusing on these contrasting stressors separately, we investigated soil heterotrophic respiration during single and repeated stress cycles in soils from four different sites along a precipitation gradient (Colorado, MAP 421 mm; South Dakota, MAP 580 mm; Michigan, MAP 893 mm; Maryland, MAP 1192 mm); …

After rebounding somewhat in May, consumer confidence in New Hampshire has slumped. Granite Staters' assessment of their current and future household finances have declined, driven by record high pessimism among Republicans.

Delta Variant Has Little Effect On Covid Vaccination In Nh; Majority Support Allowing Employer Vaccine Mandates 8/25/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
One in five New Hampshire adults continue to say they will not get a COVID-19 vaccine. Those who do not plan to get vaccinated are far less likely than earlier in the year to doubt the threat of COVID-19, but are more dubious about the efficacy of the vaccine and very few say the Delta variant will encourage them to get vaccinated. A majority support employers being allowed to mandate vaccinations, but nearly half of the vaccine-resistant say they would leave their job if their employer mandated vaccination. Most support allowing local school districts to determine whether students and staff …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The northern sector of the Greenland Ice Sheet is considered to be particularly susceptible to ice mass loss arising from increased glacier discharge in the coming decades. However, the past extent and dynamics of outlet glaciers in this region, and hence their vulnerability to climate change, are poorly documented. In the summer of 2019, the Swedish icebreaker Oden entered the previously unchartered waters of Sherard Osborn Fjord, where Ryder Glacier drains approximately 2 % of Greenland's ice sheet into the Lincoln Sea. Here we reconstruct the Holocene dynamics of Ryder Glacier and its ice tongue by combining radiocarbon dating with …

Spatial Analysis Of Beaked Whale Foraging During Two 12 Khz Multibeam Echosounder Surveys, Hilary Kates Varghese, Kim Lowell, Jennifer L. Miksis-Olds, Nancy Dimarzio, Larry A. Mayer
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
To add to the growing information about the effect of multibeam echosounder (MBES) operation on marine mammals, a study was conducted to assess the spatial foraging effort of Cuvier’s beaked whales during two MBES surveys conducted in January of 2017 and 2019 off of San Clemente Island, California. The MBES surveys took place on the Southern California Antisubmarine Warfare Range (SOAR), which contains an array of 89 hydrophones covering an area of approximately 1800 km2 over which foraging beaked whales were detected. A spatial autocorrelation analysis of foraging effort was conducted using the Moran’s I (global) and the Getis-Ord Gi∗ …

Approval Of Biden Drops In New Hampshire Amid Afghanistan Woes But Majority Agree With Decision To Withdraw 8/24/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Six in ten New Hampshire residents disapprove of President Biden's handling of foreign affairs and for the first time, a majority disapprove of his overall job performance. Most Granite Staters say he is at least somewhat to blame for the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban while others also blame the Afghan government and former U.S. presidents. Despite this, a majority support Biden's decision overall to withdraw from Afghanistan.
Relationship Form And Function: Exploring Meaning-Making In Young Adults' Romantic Histories, Tyler B. Jamison, Caroline M. Sanner
Relationship Form And Function: Exploring Meaning-Making In Young Adults' Romantic Histories, Tyler B. Jamison, Caroline M. Sanner
Faculty Publications
Forming stable, supportive romantic relationships is an important determinant of well-being for adults. Yet, there has been limited research about if and how prior romantic experiences help individuals develop the capacity to enter into such unions. Using grounded theory methods, relationship history interviews were conducted with 35 young adults who provided data about 256 romantic and sexual relationships. The different relationship forms (e.g., hooking up, casual dating, committed partnering) were found to contribute in nuanced ways to romantic development. Specifically, romantic development was characterized by gaining romantic experience, identifying preferences for partners and partnership, and learning to maintain healthy relational …
