Advancing A Design For Trusted Community Bathymetry, Daniel Tauriello May 2023

Advancing A Design For Trusted Community Bathymetry, Daniel Tauriello

Master's Theses and Capstones

The design for a Trusted Community Bathymetry (TCB) system, presented in Calder et al., 2020, demonstrates a data collection system capable of collecting precisely geo-referenced depth soundings from any navigational echosounder installed on a volunteer vessel. The TCB system is capable of autonomously determining any vertical installation offset with respect to the waterline, and provides sufficient guarantees of data quality to allow the soundings to be considered for hydrographic use.

This thesis presents two contributions to advance the original TCB system design. First, it capitalizes on the widespread availability of low-cost sidescan modules in the recreational sonar market by describing …

Multi-Uncrewed Underwater Vehicle (Uuv) Optical Communication System Design, Igor Vladimirov May 2023

Multi-Uncrewed Underwater Vehicle (Uuv) Optical Communication System Design, Igor Vladimirov

Master's Theses and Capstones

Over the past few decades the state of art of Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) has grown significantly, and one of the major challenges remains establishing reliable underwater communication among UUVs. This case is especially true in a multi-UUV setting where tethered communication is not an option. This research focuses on designing a cost-efficient, short distance optical communication system capable of supporting formation control of multiple UUVs. Although light attenuation underwater significantly degrades communication ranges, experimental results show that optical communication can achieve distances of almost 20 meters in clear water by utilizing a simple 10-Watt LED transmitter (with larger distances …

Alexandrium Spp. And Pseudo-Nitzschia Spp. Cohabitation In The Gulf Of Maine, Tiffany Winter May 2023

Alexandrium Spp. And Pseudo-Nitzschia Spp. Cohabitation In The Gulf Of Maine, Tiffany Winter

Master's Theses and Capstones

Globally, harmful algal blooms are a severe issue for marine ecosystems, animals, and humans both ecologically and economically. The Gulf of Maine is no stranger to harmful algal blooms, specifically the dinoflagellate, Alexandrium catenella, that has routinely been forming toxic blooms since the early 1970s. In 2016, a new species, the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia spp. formed a massive bloom and has had annual blooms since. Anecdotally, these two species do not bloom concurrently, suggesting there may be specific environmental conditions that promote bloom formation for each species. The intent of this research is to uncover potential parameters that are affecting bloom …

Using Unpiloted Aerial Vehicle Structure From Motion And Snowmodel To Map Spatial Distribution Of Wind Deposited Snow In Mount Washington, Nh Avalanche Terrain, Cameron Wagner May 2023

Using Unpiloted Aerial Vehicle Structure From Motion And Snowmodel To Map Spatial Distribution Of Wind Deposited Snow In Mount Washington, Nh Avalanche Terrain, Cameron Wagner

Master's Theses and Capstones

East of the Rocky Mountains, United States avalanche terrain is almost exclusive to Mount Washington, New Hampshire. Mount Washington’s east-aspect glacial cirques are subject to frequent wind slab avalanche problems due to high winds and ample snowfall in fetch areas above the cirques. Quantification of these slabs’ location, extent, and depth is an integral part of avalanche forecasting and risk assessment. This research used SnowModel, a spatially distributed snow-evolution model, to simulate wind slab depth maps using Mount Washington Observatory meteorologic station data on a 1 m grid. SnowModel’s SnowTran-3D, a snow redistribution by wind algorithm, is tested for one …

Characterization Of Arthropod Communities And The Environmental Variables That Influence Them, Christopher Ziadeh May 2023

Characterization Of Arthropod Communities And The Environmental Variables That Influence Them, Christopher Ziadeh

Master's Theses and Capstones

Arthropods are active during the winter in temperate regions, and many use seasonal snowpack to buffer themselves from harsh ambient conditions in a refugium known as the subnivium, an area that occurs under the snowpack and above the soil. This thesis focuses on subnivium arthropod communities, how they differ from summer communities, and how silvicultural management influences these communities. Arthropods were collected using modified pitfall traps from the Second College Grant, a forested township in northern New Hampshire which has areas of land dedicated to the Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change study. In the first chapter of this thesis we …

Friends, Brothers, And Citizens: American Revolutionary War Patriots Of Color And Their Fight For Rights Across The Northeast, Benjamin D. Remillard May 2023

Friends, Brothers, And Citizens: American Revolutionary War Patriots Of Color And Their Fight For Rights Across The Northeast, Benjamin D. Remillard

Doctoral Dissertations

“Friends, Brothers, and Citizens” examines the lives of the American Revolutionary War’s Northeastern Patriots of color. While historians have focused on these men’s decisions and actions during the war itself, this work draws attention to another vital part of their stories: the rest of their lives. To best demonstrate their impact, “Friends, Brothers, and Citizens” frames these men as a multiracial and generational cohort whose commitment to those around them clearly shaped movements to win relief and rights for people of color throughout the early republic. Chapter 1 examines these men’s wartime strategies to support their families and wider communities. …

Shallow Geothermal Energy Systems In The Northeastern United States: System Distancing And Policy Considerations, Aeowyn Kendall May 2023

Shallow Geothermal Energy Systems In The Northeastern United States: System Distancing And Policy Considerations, Aeowyn Kendall

Master's Theses and Capstones

Climate change is an existential threat to human society, and mitigating some of the worst impacts will require electrifying the energy sector and reaching net zero emissions by mid-century (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2018). Geothermal energy, specifically ground-source heat pumps, can help to meet winter heating demand in the Northeastern United States. This technology, as well as the various mechanisms that would aid its expansion, are still underdeveloped but have vast potential. A central factor to consider in energy transition work is how energy decisions are made by people within the context of both social and physical system constraints …

Physiological And Biochemical Responses To Salt And Cadmium Stress And It’S Amelioration By Exogenous Application Of Polyamines In Hybrid Poplar (Populus Nigra X Maximowiczii, Clone Nm6), Sanchari Kundu

Master's Theses and Capstones

The importance of nitrogen metabolism in plants in response to abiotic stress is widely known. Plant growth is severely hampered by abiotic stress, and appropriate nitrogen supply helps in plant growth and improves stress tolerance. At the same time, the regulation of nitrogen metabolism depends on the stress intensity. Abiotic stress can occur due to natural calamities, improper use of hazardous chemicals from industries, and careless environmental dumping of these chemicals. Hence, soils contaminated with hazardous chemicals are a significant threat to the development and yield of plants. Plants are affected by various abiotic stresses, i.e., salt, drought, and heavy …

Master's Theses and Capstones

ABSTRACTMOMENT-TO-MOMENT FLUCTUATIONS IN SUSTAINED ATTENTION IN INDIVIDUALS WITH TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY By Kelly Marinick University of New Hampshire Introduction: The present study examined moment-to-moment variations in reaction time (RT) using the Complexity Estimate (CE), a measure of system entropy. The primary hypothesis explored whether system entropy (CE) is higher in mild TBI (TBI) compared to neurologically healthy controls. The secondary hypothesis was to examine whether system entropy increases with task difficulty in both populations, but to a greater extent in those who have experienced TBI. Methods: 27 individuals who had experienced a TBI and 22 neurologically healthy individuals aged between …

Mesoscale Experimental Protocol For Oil Movement Under Sea Ice, Jessica Manning May 2023

Mesoscale Experimental Protocol For Oil Movement Under Sea Ice, Jessica Manning

Master's Theses and Capstones

Decreasing sea ice extent in the Arctic provides more opportunities for human activities (e.g., shipping, development) and increases the likelihood of Arctic oil spills. Sea ice adds complexity into oil spill models because it has significant impacts on oil fate and behavior. Understanding these complexities will improve Arctic oil spill responses and mitigate impacts. As part of a recent project on Arctic response conducted by the Coastal Response Research Center (CRRC), sea ice and oil spill modelers concluded that further research is needed to model the behavior of oil under ice. The underside of sea ice is affected by waves, …

Improving The Sustainability Of The Channeled Whelk (Busycotypus Canaliculatus) Fishery: An Investigation Into Alternative Baits, Feeding Behavior, And Circadian Rhythms, Mary Munley

Master's Theses and Capstones

The channeled whelk (Busycotypus canaliculatus) is a large predatory marine gastropod that supports an important commercial fishery along the eastern coast of the United States. Channeled whelk fisheries are state regulated, with each state enforcing slightly different regulations. In Massachusetts, the fishery is regulated by the Massachusetts’s Division of Marine Fisheries (MA DMF). Massachusetts’ channeled whelk landings peaked in 2012 at 3.6 million lbs., valued at $6.2 million. Since 2012, landings have decreased, 766,975 lbs. were landed in 2021 worth $3.1 million. Catch per unit effort (CPUE; lbs per trap haul) has also steadily decreased, indicating the resource is likely …

Effects Of Tag Type And Environment On Migratory Success Of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) Smolts Through A Counting Fence, Tyler Parent

Master's Theses and Capstones

Understanding behavior and quantifying survival is vital to the conservation of anadromous fishes. Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) are one of the most economically and culturally important fish in the world, but some populations are declining, particularly in the Fraser River watershed in British Columbia, Canada. Within the Fraser River basin, Chilko Lake is one of the most prolific Sockeye Salmon populations, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has operated a counting fence at the mouth of the river for several decades to enumerate outmigrating smolts. Previous studies identified the clear water landscapes immediately downstream of the fence as high-risk, with …

Narrative Insight Into How Rural, First-Generation College Students And Their Families Establish Non-Deficit, Multi-Sited Identities, Sarah Jusseaume May 2023

Narrative Insight Into How Rural, First-Generation College Students And Their Families Establish Non-Deficit, Multi-Sited Identities, Sarah Jusseaume

Doctoral Dissertations

This study explores the ways in which rural, first-generation college (RFGC) students position themselves in relation to dominant cultural master narratives and potentially competing alternative narratives related to community and family processes, norms, life pathways, and choices after college. Evidence is drawn from in-depth narrative interviews with 15 RFGC students conducted both at school and in students’ home communities. The study contributes to an anti-deficit understanding of rural first-generation college students’ college experiences and identity by focusing not on challenges and barriers but on the ways individuals both align and agentically reject dominant cultural narratives as well as the ways …

The Intersection Of Gentrification, Race, And Historical Sociology: Utilizing The Construction Of A Racial Gentrification Index To Measure Racialized Versus Economic Changes Across Massachusetts From 2000 To 2020, Paige Elizabeth Depasquale

Master's Theses and Capstones

The phenomenon of gentrification occurs in cities and towns across the United States in a racialized way. Despite several gentrification indices existing, thus far none measure racial gentrification nor incorporate racialized practices associated with gentrification into their measures. This paper aims to create a novel index measuring racial gentrification across 73 cities and towns in Massachusetts from 2000 to 2020 using Census and Diversity and Disparities data. The racial gentrification index constructed comprises of 3 economic gentrification variables and 6 residential segregation variables. Through multiple linear regression analyses, racial gentrification is tested as a predictor of three structural outcomes that …

Preliminary Validation Of A High-Performance Electrothermal Model Of An Electromagnetic Heating System, Jeremiah Vardaman May 2023

Preliminary Validation Of A High-Performance Electrothermal Model Of An Electromagnetic Heating System, Jeremiah Vardaman

Master's Theses and Capstones

To aid in the design and development of an electrical induction thermoplastic pipe-fusion product, Ansys HFSS, an electromagnetics simulation package, and Ansys Mechanical, a thermal dynamics simulation package, were used to simulate a model of the pipe-fusion product. HFSS estimated the currents induced in conductive susceptors embedded in the pipe fitting. Then, Mechanical estimated temperature dynamics on the susceptors as a function of the induced currents. The heat generated by induced currents on the susceptors increases temperatures in the vicinity of the region to be fused. The increased temperature of the thermoplastic facilitates a pipe fuse. The simulation results were …

The Effect Of Hypoxia On Gli Expression And Their Downstream Effect In Waldenström Macroglobulinemia, Estefania Yzar-Garcia May 2023

The Effect Of Hypoxia On Gli Expression And Their Downstream Effect In Waldenström Macroglobulinemia, Estefania Yzar-Garcia

Master's Theses and Capstones

Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) is a sub-type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma associated with excess secretion of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and the infiltration of the bone marrow by lymphoplasmacytic cells. There is a dynamic oxygen gradient consumption and diffusion in the tumor microenvironment, leading to regions of hypoxia (1-3% O2 concentration). GLI1, GLI2 and GLI3 are members of the family of Kruppel-like factors with highly conserved Zinc finger DNA-binding domains in mammalian cells. They signal trough the Hedgehog pathway which is a conserved pathway among species and is crucial in fundamental development processes and tissue homeostasis. They can also signal trough non-canonical pathways …

Remote Sensing Of Riparian Areas And Invasive Species, Molly E. Yanchuck May 2023

Remote Sensing Of Riparian Areas And Invasive Species, Molly E. Yanchuck

Master's Theses and Capstones

Riparian areas are critical landscape features situated between terrestrial and aquatic environments, which provide a host of ecosystem functions and services. Although important to the environmental health of an ecosystem, riparian areas have been degraded by anthropogenic disturbances. These routine disturbances have decreased the resiliency of riparian areas and increased their vulnerability to invasive plant species. Invasive plant species are non-native species which cause harm to the ecosystem and thrive in riparian areas due to the access to optimal growing conditions.Remote sensing provides an opportunity to manage riparian habitats at a regional and local level with imagery collected by satellites …

Environment Influence On Interaction Outcomes, Kaley Lambert May 2023

Environment Influence On Interaction Outcomes, Kaley Lambert

Comm-entary

In tandem with other interactional elements, the body plays a substantial role in communicative interactions with companions and oneself. This research compares environmental differences between spaces from two different reality television program environments (Love is Blind and Love Island) which are specified as having the same interaction-goal, observes how the spaces may influence the types of interpersonal interactions they are built for, and compares data regarding the outcomes of said interactions within these spaces so as to provide support for the argument that environments may influence interpersonal interaction outcomes.

Interorganizational Communication: Case Study, Emma Darocha

Comm-entary

The case presented in this study examines coercive power. An eighteen-year-old freshman attending college in a new state found himself longing for a community on campus which led him to decide to join a fraternity. Regrettably, this student did not find this community or brotherhood in this fraternity. As part of the pledging initiation, he was put in an extremely dangerous situation that was overseen by the authority figures of the fraternity. When he tried to drop out of the pledge process, he was coerced by older members to continue it and made to believe that this was something that …

Performing Relationships During Special Occasion Openings, Ashley Kayla White May 2023

Performing Relationships During Special Occasion Openings, Ashley Kayla White

Comm-entary

All conversations start with an opening. However, opening sequences take on different and at times more grandiose representations during special or uncommon interactional events. How these openings are performed, furthermore, conveys much about the social dynamics and relationships between interactants. The goal of this research is to explore how special event opening practices display relationships between people in day-to-day interaction by drawing from two recordings of special occasion communication. To achieve this, a conversation analytic perspective is employed and several concepts are analyzed in conjunction with openings. These include preference organization, affiliation, repair, body torque and spatial orientation, gaze, epistemics, …

This magical reality works within the plot of the show to reveal how Wanda experiences and demonstrates Kübler-Ross’s Five Stages of Grief.

Content For Change, Kaley Lambert May 2023

Content For Change, Kaley Lambert

Comm-entary

This piece considers the perspectives of environmental activist Paul Kingsnorth, and author of Anthropocene Unconscious: Climate Catastrophe Culture Mark Bould when assessing the power of storytelling in efforts for climate crisis action. Stories hold the potential to change perspectives and encourage new mentalities. Media content is able to perpetuate, develop, and share stories to a massive audience. This paper argues that if media content were, on a wide scale, to deliberately shift narratives to encourage compassion, action, and concern for the environment, and to discourage wastefulness and mentalities of expansion and colonialism, then it may become more feasible to mitigate …

The Almost-Feminism Of Midsommar, Kaley Lambert May 2023

The Almost-Feminism Of Midsommar, Kaley Lambert

Comm-entary

This paper argues that the 2019 horror film Midsommar accomplishes almost-feminism. It includes a matriarchal society, respects older women, punishes toxic masculinity, rewards emotional vulnerability, has complex and unique female characters, and has a strong female protagonist. There is also, however an overt lack of intersectionality, as Midsommar exhibits a lack of consideration for class, ableism, racism, or body diversity. This film is nevertheless a worthwhile counterweight in a sea of actively sexist horror films.

Pandemic Through The Lens: An Examination Of Repeat Photography During Lockdown, Lauren Cole May 2023

Pandemic Through The Lens: An Examination Of Repeat Photography During Lockdown, Lauren Cole

Comm-entary

The Covid-19 pandemic had sweeping effects on environments across the globe including, decreases in pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and many others. Repeat photography and social media became tools to document these changes for people to see. Generally, traditional climate imagery and repeat photography depict the degradation of the environment rather than its recovery. This paper works to show how the use of this unique situation, to promote positive environmental change, might work better as a persuasive tool in the fight for climate action.
