The Other Side Of My Heart: Latina Immigrant’S Oral History In Music, Lorena Guillén
The Other Side Of My Heart: Latina Immigrant’S Oral History In Music, Lorena Guillén
Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal
The author recorded six women from her local community in North Carolina. They shared and reflected about their dreams and fears while also evaluating the things they gained and lost in moving to the US. This work became a song cycle with music by Argentine composer Alejandro Rutty and lyrics based on the interviews, which the author edited from the exact words they expressed in their conversations. Rutty and the author used fragments of these interviews as part of an audio collage played at the beginning of each song.
A “Free Artist Of Color” In Late-Eighteenth-Century Saint-Domingue: The Life And Times Of Minette, Bernard Camier
A “Free Artist Of Color” In Late-Eighteenth-Century Saint-Domingue: The Life And Times Of Minette, Bernard Camier
Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal
This article sets forth, for the first time in detail, the life and career of Minette, who was the main female opera singer in Port-au-Prince at the end of the eighteenth century. The city was the capital of the thriving and wealthy French colony of Saint-Domingue (which, upon gaining independence in 1804, took the name Haïti). Theatrical activity in Port-au-Prince was comparable to what one could find in any large provincial city, and the success that Minette gained was all the more remarkable for her being categorized as colored (mestive). The details of Minette’s origins, life, and career …

Comparative Study Of Tempo Deviations In Four 54 Recordings Of Hans Werner Henze’S Du SchöNesbäChlein For Guitar Solo (1958), JoãO Raone Tavares Da Silva
Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal
The objective of this paper is to offer a contribution to the study of performance and, more specifically, development of performance analysis methodologies and techniques through a brief comparative analysis of the tempo deviations in four interpretations of Du schönes Bächlein, a composition by Hans Werner Henze (1926–2012), as performed by four different guitarists. Graphs and representations are developed to demonstrate the tempo deviations in each of the selected recordings, followed by analysis of the respective collected information.
Cross-Cultural Performance Of Iranian Contemporarymusic: Hommage À Abolhasan Saba And Masnavi, Liselotte Sels
Cross-Cultural Performance Of Iranian Contemporarymusic: Hommage À Abolhasan Saba And Masnavi, Liselotte Sels
Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal
A unique feature of many contemporary Iranian artistic and musical expressions is their firm grounding in indigenous cultural traditions. Composers often reveal a strong involvement with Iran’s diverse traditions, in relation to a clear awareness of the country’s cultural role in the global cultural and political context. This can be witnessed in titles of works, poems chosen as lyrics or inspiration, and the music itself. Non-Iranian musicians performing new music which makes use of indigenous Iranian elements possibly face challenges or problems. Two works performed by Ensemble HaftCraft on March 19, 2017 in Brussels present relevant issues and results: Hommage …
Kinky Friedman And His Influence On Jewish American Music, Mara W. Cohen Ioannides
Kinky Friedman And His Influence On Jewish American Music, Mara W. Cohen Ioannides
Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal
Kinky Friedman changed American pop music and Country and Western music’s presentation of Jews. Because of his satirical and counter culture lyrics, the idea that Jews could be Jewish on stage without having to point out they were Jewish was a part of the stage persona that Friedman adopted. His biting lyrics pointed to the derogatory ways that Americans view the other and what he saw as hypocritical Christian values. Additionally, he is set the stage to address painful issues in music, writing and performing the first popular song about the Holocaust. Dubbed the founder of “Redneck Rock” or a …

A strength of the University Archives at the University of New Hampshire is its strong administrative and institutional history collections through the mid 20th century, with hundreds of linear feet of manuscripts from offices across campus. However, some of these collections were processed more than 30 years ago and are missing descriptive work that would ideally highlight communities of color on campus and their inclusion and self-advocacy in the history of higher education.
In the absence of resources that would prioritize reprocessing these collections, the University Archives has partnered with the Digital Collections Team at UNH to broaden the access …

Background: Rural youth face barriers to involvement in effective Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning experiences, leading to persistent underrepresentation in STEM fields. Purpose: This study examined the feasibility of using mobile devices to engage rural youth in informal STEM learning (ISL) during free-choice, outdoor recreational activities. We assessed outcomes of a 10-month intervention related to STEM interest, identity, and future planning. Method: Fifty-four youth ages 12 to 17 completed monthly STEM challenges delivered via a mobile platform, aligned with connected learning and free-choice learning principles. Surveys measured pre/post changes in STEM supports, STEM confidence, and …

Few Vermonters Have Used Prediction Markets, Majority Want More Federal Regulation Of Industry 3/17/2026, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
A majority of Vermonters have heard of prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket, but very few state residents have actually participated in them. Vermonters believe it should be illegal to use prediction markets to bet on elections, the economy, or political events like war, but are split over whether it should be legal to use them to bet on sports or cultural events. A majority support further federal government regulation of prediction markets. Nearly half of Vermonters expect prediction markets to have a negative effect on the country over the next decade.
