New And Useful Improvements: The Role Of Institutional Culture, Leadership, Incentives, And Regulation In 30 Years Of Legal Education Since The Maccrate Report, Greg Brandes
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
New and useful improvements – in the words of the patent statute – have emerged from legal education’s pursuit of seamlessly developing contributing members of the legal profession, as the 1992 MacCrate Report advocated. These include the widespread adoption of distance learning techniques for better teaching and assessment, course pedagogy that is more inclusive for students with diverse learning needs, and a new subset of the academy schooled and interested in the science of teaching and learning. But it has not been easy.
Efforts to improve legal education have sometimes foundered and other times flourished because of varying faculty and …

High-energy neutral solar radiation in the form of γ-rays and neutrons is produced as secondary products in solar flares. The characteristics of this emission can provide key information regarding the energization of charged particles, particularly when primary particles remain trapped in the corona. The Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (ISOIS) suite on Parker Solar Probe is composed of instruments primarily intended to measure energetic charged particles. However, the High Energy Telescope (HET) in ISOIS was also designed with a supplementary neutral mode intended to measure γ-rays and neutrons. HET observed its first clear solar γ-ray event in connection with …

Detecting Coral Reef Presence Using Icesat-2 Data And Machine Learning Methods, Gabrielle Trudeau, Lowell Kim
Detecting Coral Reef Presence Using Icesat-2 Data And Machine Learning Methods, Gabrielle Trudeau, Lowell Kim
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
As ocean temperatures and sea levels continue to increase and weather storms become more severe and frequent, benthic habitats such as coral reefs become more vulnerable to deadly conditions such as mass bleaching events and infectious diseases. With these ever-changing conditions, it becomes imperative that monitoring efforts are made to ensure longevity of the world’s coral reefs. Current coral reef monitoring techniques require significant manpower to collect in-situ data, such as fixed site surveys using photography and visual counts. The Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), while initially intended for collecting data regarding changes in the cryosphere, utilizes a …

Episodic Satellite-Derived Depth Change From A Single Model Based On “Stacking” Multi-Temporal Images, Kim Lowell, Yuri Rzhanov
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The output of the combination of “complete coverage” remote sensing imagery and geographically sparser high-quality bathymetric data – usually LiDAR – to produce wall-to-wall bathymetric maps is known as “satellite-derived bathymetry” or simply SDB. Considerable effort continues to be made to improve SDB techniques and define where they produce the most accurate maps. Most efforts are focused on producing SDB at a single time. Research on estimating “satellite-derived depth change” (SDDC) is much more limited. Where it has been studied, the general approach is to produce and apply separate models for t1 and t2 using time-appropriate imagery and LiDAR data. …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire owns and operates “DriX-8”, an Uncrewed Surface Vehicle (USV) manufactured by Exail and funded by NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research through the Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute. The DriX vehicle was designed for acoustic survey operations, providing a high-endurance platform with hydrographic grade navigation systems and a subsea gondola for sonars. As delivered, DriX-8 was equipped with a Kongsberg EM2040 with typical full-swath capability to water depths of 200-300 m. NOAA expressed interest in future survey operations to depths exceeding 1000m and encouraged integration of a …

Optimizing The Accuracy Of Bathymetric Maps Developed Using Automated And Manual Techniques To Extract Training Data From Icesat-2 Data, Andrea Granger, Kim Lowell
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
SDB (satellite-derived bathymetry) is a cost-effective solution for large-area bathymetric mapping. Calibration of SDB models relies on in situ depth points traditionally obtained from ship-borne measurements, presenting challenges in collecting data in remote shallow areas. ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, Land, Elevation Satellite-2) is equipped with a laser altimeter that successfully records shallow water depths (<40m), providing an efficient solution for acquiring in situ depth data. This study compares manual and automated ICESat-2 bathymetric photon extraction techniques and determines an optimal bathymetric photon event sampling strategy. The objective is to assess how these techniques impact the accuracy of SDB maps. Integrated with Sentinel-2 imagery, the extracted ICESat-2 data train bathymetric inversion models. Various controlled ICESat-2 bathymetric photon resampling techniques are then employed to determine the optimal approach for improving the accuracy of SDB maps. NOAA lidar reference data are used to compare the automated and manual SDB extraction and evaluate the impact of resampling ICESat-2 bathymetric photon events. Anticipated results show that the depth distribution of ICESat-2 bathymetric photon events and the automated bathymetric photon extraction techniques have a considerable impact on SDB map accuracy. These findings hold significance for supporting initiatives in navigational safety, coastal management, marine ecosystem studies, and seafloor mapping.

Supernova remnants (SNRs) provide insights into cosmic-ray acceleration and magnetic field dynamics at shock fronts. Recent X-ray polarimetric measurements by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) have revealed radial magnetic fields near particle acceleration sites in young SNRs, including Cassiopeia A, Tycho, and SN 1006. We present here the spatially resolved IXPE X-ray polarimetric observation of the northwestern rim of SNR RX J1713.7–3946. For the first time, our analysis shows that the magnetic field in the particle acceleration sites of this SNR is oriented tangentially with respect to the shock front. Because of the lack of precise Faraday rotation measurements …

Nearly One-Third Of Granite Staters Expect To Be Worse Off In A Year; Cost Of Living And Inflation Cited As Reasons 5/24/2024, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
A plurality of Granite Staters think they are worse off financially than they were a year ago and almost one-third expect to be worse off a year from now. The most frequently cited reasons are inflation or the cost of living. Republicans and Independents are considerably more likely than Democrats to be pessimistic about their personal finances. State residents are also pessimistic about the short and long-term macroeconomic outlook of the country at large but are somewhat more optimistic in their expectations for the New Hampshire economy.

The inflection point is an important feature of sigmoidal height-diameter (H-D) models. It is often cited as one of the properties favoring sigmoidal model forms. However, there are very few studies analyzing the inflection points of H-D models. The goals of this study were to theoretically and empirically examine the behaviors of inflection points of six common H-D models with a regional dataset. The six models were the Wykoff (WYK), Schumacher (SCH), Curtis (CUR), Hossfeld IV (HOS), von Bertalanffy-Richards (VBR), and Gompertz (GPZ) models. The models were first fitted in their base forms with tree species as random effects and …

We report the discovery of X-ray polarization from the X-ray-bright filament G0.13−0.11 in the Galactic center (GC) region. This filament features a bright, hard X-ray source that is most plausibly a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) and an extended and structured diffuse component. Combining the polarization signal from IXPE with the imaging/spectroscopic data from Chandra, we find that X-ray emission of G0.13−0.11 is highly polarized PD = 57(±18)% in the 3−6 keV band, while the polarization angle is PA = 21 ° ( ± 9 ° ). This high degree of polarization proves the synchrotron origin of the X-ray emission from …
