A plethora of coronal models, from empirical to more complex magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) ones, are being used for reconstructing the coronal magnetic field topology and estimating the open magnetic flux. However, no individual solution fully agrees with coronal hole observations and in situ measurements of open flux at 1 au, as there is a strong deficit between the model and observations contributing to the known problem of the missing open flux. In this paper, we investigate the possible origin of the discrepancy between modeled and observed magnetic field topology by assessing the effect on the simulation output by the choice of …

An experimental kelp farming system for exposed ocean conditions was designed, deployed, planted with kelp and instrumented for evaluation of its dynamic response to ocean waves, tides, and currents. The farm featured a novel "lattice" mooring design and anchor lines and cultivation lines (horizontal lines used as kelp growth substrate) made of fiberglass rods. The farm was deployed at a site in Saco Bay, Maine with 13 m (MLLW) water depth. There the farm was exposed to waves with heights up to 5.9 m. Anchor line tension, tide and wave height time series were gathered and processed into response amplitude …

Pulse profile modeling of X-ray data from the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer is now enabling precision inference of neutron star mass and radius. Combined with nuclear physics constraints from chiral effective field theory (χEFT), and masses and tidal deformabilities inferred from gravitational-wave detections of binary neutron star mergers, this has led to a steady improvement in our understanding of the dense matter equation of state (EOS). Here, we consider the impact of several new results: the radius measurement for the 1.42 M ⊙ pulsar PSR J0437−4715 presented by Choudhury et al., updates to the masses and radii of PSR …

Energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) from the heliosphere are a unique means to remotely image the boundary regions of our heliosphere. The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) has been very successful in measuring these ENAs since 2008 at energies from tens of eV to 6 keV. The main question raised by one solar cycle of IBEX-Lo observations at 0.05–2 keV is the strong and ubiquitous underestimation of several model predictions compared with actually measured ENA intensities at energies between 100 and 500 eV. This study converts the observed ENA intensities into plasma pressures for different sky directions and considers the implications for …

POLAR-2 is a dedicated gamma-ray polarimeter currently foreseen to be launched towards the China Space Station around 2027. The design of the detector is based on the legacy of its predecessor mission POLAR which was launched in 2016. POLAR-2 aims to measure the polarization of the Gamma-ray Burst prompt emission within the 30–800 keV energy range. Thanks to its high sensitivity to gamma-ray polarization, as well as its large effective area, POLAR-2 will provide the most precise measurements of this type to date. Such measurements are key to improve our understanding of the astrophysical processes responsible for Gamma-Ray Bursts. The …

Climate change may alter soil microbial communities and soil organic matter (SOM) composition. Soil carbon (C) cycling takes place over multiple time scales therefore, long-term studies are essential to better understand the factors influencing C storage and help predict responses to climate change. To investigate this further, soils that were heated by 5 °C above ambient soil temperatures for 18 years were collected from the Barre Woods Soil Warming Study at the Harvard Forest Long-term Ecological Research site. This site consists of large 30 × 30 m plots (control or heated) where entire root systems are exposed to sustained warming …

Damage Evolution And Ductile Fracture Of Commercially-Pure Titanium Sheets Subjected To Simple Tension And Cyclic Bending Under Tension, Nicholas Pitkin, Philip Noell, David T. Fullwood, Marko Knezevic
Faculty Publications
This paper describes a study into the evolution of damage in commercial-purity titanium (CP–Ti) sheets subjected to cyclic bending under tension (CBT) and uniaxial tension (simple tension, ST). Sections were taken from sheets that were strained to various levels under both methods and were imaged using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) to reveal insights into the size, density, and distribution of microvoids in the sheets. Digital image correlation (DIC) was also used to observe the surface strain of CBT and ST sheets during testing. These results showed that elongation to failure (ETF) for CBT deformation is about 2.5× higher than for …

All UNH Survey Center Polls
Following President Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, Democrats in New Hampshire clearly favor Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. Harris holds a slim lead over former President Donald Trump and is slightly more popular than Trump or Biden. While a majority of Granite Staters do not believe Biden should resign as President, many state Democrats are relieved and hopeful in the wake of his withdrawal from the race. And in the wake of the assassination attempt on Trump, most state Republicans do not trust the FBI to conduct a thorough investigation. More than three-quarters of state …

A majority of Maine Democrats felt relieved and hopeful following President Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race and most would like to see Vice President Kamala Harris become the party's nominee for president. Harris leads in a matchup with Republican nominee former President Donald Trump and is more popular in the state than Trump and Biden. Most state Republicans do not trust the FBI to investigate the attempted assassination of Trump and more than three-quarters of Mainers are concerned about further political attacks on political leaders, leaders using violence or illegal methods to obtain power, or people violently or …

In polar regions, sea ice is a crucial mediator of the interaction between Earth's atmosphere and oceans. Its formation and breakup is intimately connected with large-scale climatic processes, local weather patterns, and the use of sea ice in coastal Arctic regions by Indigenous people. In order to investigate the physical phenomena at the heart of this process, a set of targeted, intensive observations were made over spring sea ice melt and breakup in Kotzebue Sound, Alaska. These observations were planned and executed through a collaborative effort in which an Indigenous Elder advisory council from Kotzebue and scientists participated in co-production …
The Role Of Biological Plasticity In Model-Based Translational Research, Jessica A. Bolker
The Role Of Biological Plasticity In Model-Based Translational Research, Jessica A. Bolker
Faculty Publications
Reports of low replicability and translatability of biomedical research have called the value of animal models into question. The problems are real, but abandoning animal research is not the solution. Rather, improving the translatability of model-based research requires attention to relevant differences between humans and models, and to attributes of the models themselves that are essential to both robust science and effective translation. One is biological plasticity, the responsiveness of individual organisms to complex and variable environments. Though under-represented in model systems (for both historical and practical reasons), plasticity is central to human biology. While there are good reasons to …

Most Rhode Islanders Feel State Headed In Wrong Direction, Disapprove Of Governor Mckee's Job Performance 7/18/2024, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Rhode Island residents are pessimistic about the direction of the state and cite housing, infrastructure, the economy, and corrupt or incompetent government as Rhode Island's most important problems. Less than one-third of residents, including less than half of Democrats, approve of Daniel McKee's performance as governor. Despite voting on the topic several times roughly every decade for many years, a majority of Rhode Islanders do not have a firm understanding of the meaning of the constitutional convention question on the general election ballot in November. Most Rhode Islanders have used the Washington Bridge or detours since the westbound portion of …

Healey's Popularity Declines, Housing & Immigration Seen As Most Important Problems 7/18/2024, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Massachusetts residents are divided on Maura Healey's performance as governor and her approval rating has declined since May. Housing and immigration are cited most often as the most important problems facing Massachusetts and half of state residents feel the commonwealth is headed in the right direction. A plurality support the 2021 MBTA Communities law requiring communities with access to the MBTA to zone for multifamily housing. Bay Staters show very little interest in renaming Logan Airport after Bill Russell, though many residents are ambivalent or have no opinion on the issue.
