There is rising concern about the work readiness of nursing and midwifery graduates. Using the prism of unplanned pregnancy to understand Australian academics' perspectives of teaching this topic may highlight challenges associated with the current national education accreditation model and contribute to the dearth of international research on nursing and midwifery education accreditation. This study aimed to explore Australian academics' perspectives on teaching unplanned pregnancy prevention and care to undergraduate nursing and midwifery students. As we face multiple environmental crises (e.g. climate change, nutrient pollution, freshwater scarcity), there is often a disconnect between an entity’s activities and the pollution resulting from that activity. Footprint tools help address this disconnect. They are effective in educating people, institutions and communities on how their resource use results in environmental pollution and what we can do to moderate that pollution. These tools connect an entity’s activities with the associated pollution. Footprint tools are also constantly evolving. As we better understand how to best estimate emissions—especially from sources further removed like those from the supply chain—the guidance and methods …

Many state and federal agencies are promoting outdoor recreation as an economic development strategy in natural resource-dependent rural regions of the United States that have experienced sustained divestment and outmigration after the collapse of traditional extractive industries. An underappreciated dimension of these efforts is how to prepare a future workforce from within rural communities that can help develop this diverse and growing sector. This article reports on an intervention delivered to middle and high-school aged youth in a rural area in the northeastern U.S. that examined whether outdoor recreation activities can serve as an accessible context for informal STEM learning. …

In spring 2024, researchers at the University of New Hampshire undertook data collection to better understand the landscape of preschool offerings in New Hampshire’s public schools. School districts provide preschool using a variety of models based on local needs. All public school districts must provide access to a free appropriate public education for preschool-aged children with an identified disability under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part B. Children identified under IDEA Part B have an Individualized Education Program, or IEP, to support their learning. Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) products are developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support planning for and responding to coastal oil and chemical spills. ESI data describe a variety of coastal resources that are at risk from oil spills that include sensitive shorelines (e.g., marshes, tidal flats), biological resources (e.g., birds, shellfish beds), and human-use resources (e.g., public beaches, water intakes). ESI maps and datasets include shoreline types that are ranked according to their sensitivity to oil and chemical spills. The prevailing view for aqueous secondary aerosol formation is that it occurs in clouds and fogs, owing to the large liquid water content compared to minute levels in fine particles. Our research indicates that this view may need reevaluation due to enhancements in aqueous reactions in highly concentrated small particles. Here, we show that low temperature can play a role through a unique effect on particle pH that can substantially modulate secondary aerosol formation. Marked increases in hydroxymethanesulfonate observed under extreme cold in Fairbanks, Alaska, demonstrate the effect.
