Law school students are encouraged frequently to “network.” However, depending on demographic categories, they may have access to differently resourced social networks in law school. In this article, we draw from our mixed-methods research to explore this diversity of experience, its limitations of access, and the possible network inequalities that may limit the value of legal education to diverse students across different institutional contexts. Using survey and network data (N = 744), collected during the fall of 2019 from three law schools, as well as supplementary interview data (N = 55), we examined students’ social networks, the structures of these …

Aspect-Ratio-Dependent Heat Transport By Baroclinic Acoustic Streaming, Jacques Abdul Massih, Remil Mushthaq, Guillaume Michel, Gregory P. Chini
Faculty Publications
Standing acoustic waves have been known to generate Eulerian time-mean ‘streaming’ flows at least since the seminal investigation of Lord Rayleigh in the 1880s. Nevertheless, a recent body of numerical and experimental evidence has shown that inhomogeneities in the ambient density distribution lead to much faster flows than arise in classical Rayleigh streaming. The emergence of these unusually strong flows creates new opportunities to enhance heat transfer in systems in which convective cooling cannot otherwise be easily achieved. To assess this possibility, a theoretical study of acoustic streaming in an ideal gas confined in a rectangular channel with top and …
Addressing Once More The (Im)Possibility Of Color Reconstruction In Underwater Images, Yuri Rzhanov, Kim Lowell
Addressing Once More The (Im)Possibility Of Color Reconstruction In Underwater Images, Yuri Rzhanov, Kim Lowell
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Color is an important cue in object recognition and classification problems. In underwater imagery, colors undergo strong distortion due to light propagation through an absorbing and scattering medium. Distortions depend on a number of complex phenomena, the most important being wavelength-dependent absorption and the sensitivity of sensors in trichromatic cameras. It has been shown previously that unique reconstruction in this case is not possible—at least for a simplified image formation model. In this paper, the authors use numerical simulations to demonstrate that this statement also holds for the underwater image formation model that is currently the most sophisticated.

2024 New Hampshire Civic Health Report, Quixada Moore-Vissing, Carrie Portrie, Harshita Sarup, Michele Holt-Shannon
Carsey Publications
Since the 2020 New Hampshire Civic Health Index was published, there have been significant changes to the country that may have impacted civic health in New Hampshire. We have experienced the Covid-19 pandemic, a rise in social justice efforts, the 2020 presidential election, and the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol. This report focuses on the civic health of New Hampshire from 2019 through 2024 using a specific set of indicators. The intent behind this report is that the data at the state level can be used to help both the state overall and local communities strengthen civic …

Unh Ocean Discovery Lego Model Instructions - C2402 R/V Gulf Surveyor - Unh Ccom/Jhc, William F. Fessenden, Colleen Mitchell
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Commissioned in 2016, R/V Gulf Surveyor, or “RVGS" for short, is 48-foot research vessel operated by the UNH Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping / NOAA-UNH Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC). A vital tool for the Center’s research and academic programs, her twin screw propulsion and catamaran-style hull, combined with a state-of-the-art hull design, provide for excellent maneuverability and stability, and is an optimal launch for nearshore ocean mapping. In addition to its multibeam sonar mapping systems, the RVGS can also be equipped with sidescan sonar, seismic systems, and thanks to its A-frame and portside crane, is an effective platform for …

Biomass burning emits large numbers of organic aerosol particles, a subset of which are called tarballs (TBs). TBs possess a spherical morphology and unique physical, chemical, and optical properties. They are recognized as brown-carbon aerosol particles, influencing the climate through the absorption of solar radiation. Aerosol particles were collected from wildfire and agricultural-fire smoke sampled by NASA's DC-8 aircraft during the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) campaign in the western US from July to September 2019. This study developed an image analysis method using deep learning to distinguish TBs from other round particles that …

On Application Of A Surrogate Model To Numerical Evaluation Of Effective Elastic Properties Of Composites With 3d Rotationally Symmetric Particles, Pascal Alexander Happ, Igor Tsukrov, Romana Piat
Faculty Publications
Micromechanical modelling of particulate composites with non-ellipsoidal particle shapes presents significant challenges because analytical approaches based on the fundamental results of Eshelby cannot be used. On the other side, direct numerical evaluations by finite element analysis can involve high computational cost in the case when particle features have small radius of curvature, sharp edges and require extremely fine meshes. This paper proposes substituting the exact particle shape with a surrogate model producing approximately the same contribution to the effective elastic moduli. We illustrate our approach by considering rotationally symmetric 3D particle shapes with the external surface defined by the Laplace's …
