The physical mechanisms usually applied to explain the relativistic electron enhancement have been delved into to elucidate non-adiabatic electron acceleration resulting in the ultra-relativistic electron population observed in the outer radiation belt. We considered multisatellite observations of the solar wind parameters, magnetospheric waves, and particle flux to report an unusual local acceleration of ultra-relativistic electrons under a prolonged high-speed solar wind stream (HSS). A corotating interaction region reaches the Earth’s bowshock on August 3, 2016, causing a minor geomagnetic storm. Following this, the magnetosphere was driven for 72 h by a long-term HSS propagating at 600 km/s. During this period, …

A student’s choice of major is influenced by their parents and peers, as well as by the quality of the college department that offers the major and by broader cultural and economic issues. The student’s own personality, including their ability to reason about themselves and their interests, also contributes to the choice and its outcomes. In a preliminary study, we developed a Choice of Major Scale that depicts key aspects of students’ consideration of their major. Then, across three studies (Ns = 304, 466, and 492), we examined the students’ personal intelligence, defined as their capacity to reason about their …

Migration Continues To Sustain Population Gains In Rural America, Kenneth M. Johnson

In this brief, author Kenneth Johnson reports that rural America is now gaining population again after a decade of loss. The recent rural population gain of 197,000 is striking given that pandemic-era deaths exceeded births in nonmetropolitan areas by a staggering 454,000 between April of 2020 and July of 2023, compared to a net natural loss (more deaths than births) of just 19,000 in the three years before the pandemic.

Even though rural America had an overall population gain between 2020 and 2023, just 45 percent of all rural counties gained population. Most of the recent nonmetropolitan population increase accrued …

Surface waves are significantly damped by biogenic surfactants which accumulate at the ocean's surface from the high latitudes to the tropics. The growth, development, and breaking of short wind-driven surface waves is a key mediator of the air-sea exchange of momentum, heat, and trace gases consequently, the effect of surfactant compounds in the uppermost millimeters of the ocean in damping short surface waves bears on earth's climatic processes. The mechanisms through which surfactants suppress waves have been studied in great detail through careful laboratory experimentation in quasi one-dimensional wave tanks. The term “offshore” with regards to aquaculture has hitherto encompassed various perspectives, including technology, geographic location, legal jurisdiction, and more. To resolve the ambiguity in this term and understand its implications for current and future aquaculture development, “offshore” should be resolved into two separate metrics: distance from shore and energy exposure. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) distinguishes between internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and the high seas, but currently has no precise definition for “offshore” in its provisions, and therefore no applicable laws pertaining to “offshore” aquaculture. Where and under what conditions the transfer of energy between electromagnetic fields and particles takes place in the solar wind remains an open question. We investigate the conditions that promote the growth of kinetic instabilities predicted by linear theory to infer how turbulence and temperature-anisotropy-driven instabilities are interrelated. Using a large dataset from Solar Orbiter, we introduce the radial rate of strain, a novel measure computed from single-spacecraft data, which we interpret as a proxy for the double-adiabatic strain rate. The solar wind exhibits high absolute values of the radial rate of strain at locations with large temperature anisotropy. We …
