A Random Forest Regression Approach For Prediction Of Specific Flux For Ultrafiltration Membranes, Isabel Medeiros
A Random Forest Regression Approach For Prediction Of Specific Flux For Ultrafiltration Membranes, Isabel Medeiros
Master's Theses and Capstones
Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane operation is strongly affected by fouling, where dissolved and suspended water quality constituents interact with each other and the membrane surface, leading to pore blockage. As a result, a fouled membrane loses filtration efficiency, reducing the volume of treated water produced and increasing operation and maintenance costs associated with membrane cleaning. At a Dutch full-scale facility in North Holland, fouling is indicated by both an increase in the amount of pressure required across the membrane, known as transmembrane pressure (TMP), and a decrease in permeability, represented by specific flux (SF). The facility performs hydraulic backwashing - both …
Phase Equilibria Modeling Of Blueschist- And Eclogite-Facies Metamorphism: Tillotson Peak Complex, Northern Vermont, Aidan Robert Lutz
Phase Equilibria Modeling Of Blueschist- And Eclogite-Facies Metamorphism: Tillotson Peak Complex, Northern Vermont, Aidan Robert Lutz
Master's Theses and Capstones
Preservation of high- and ultra-high pressure Taconic metamorphic terranes is enigmatic in the northern Appalachians due to persistent metamorphic overprinting from subsequent orogenies. The Tillotson Peak Complex (TPC) in northern Vermont preserves the highest pressure conditions in the northern Appalachians. Previously, pressure-temperature (P-T) estimates were carried out using albite = jadeite + quartz thermobarometry, which yielded peak conditions of 1.2–1.4 GPa at 520–620ºC. Since these estimates, phase equilibria modeling software has improved, allowing for more accurate estimates of P-T. This study aims to provide new P-T estimates for the TPC by using the phase equilibria modeling software PERPLEX. SEM-EDS obtained …
Methodology To Account For Rising Groundwater Within The Aashto 1993 Pavement Design Approach, Ahmad Mehrabi
Methodology To Account For Rising Groundwater Within The Aashto 1993 Pavement Design Approach, Ahmad Mehrabi
Master's Theses and Capstones
The increasing threat of climate change and sea level rise makes it important to have a more adaptive pavement design approach. The AASHTO 1993 pavement design method, used by 55% of U.S. state transportation agencies, assumes a constant subgrade modulus value. This simplification does not take into account the changing subgrade conditions that are affected by environmental factors like rising or fluctuating groundwater levels. This thesis presents a method to include changes in subgrade modulus due to groundwater level variations in the AASHTO 1993 framework, making the pavement design more accurate and reliable under changing conditions. The study begins with a …
Good Vibrations: Low-Frequency Anthropogenic Sound And Blue Mussel Recruitment, Kyrie Elise Newby
Good Vibrations: Low-Frequency Anthropogenic Sound And Blue Mussel Recruitment, Kyrie Elise Newby
Master's Theses and Capstones
Anthropogenic noise pollution is increasing in the world’s oceans, particularly along urbanized coastlines and global shipping routes. Many human activities, such as vessel traffic, pile driving, drilling, and other construction projects, produce loud low-frequency noise (Duarte et al. 2021). Marine invertebrates, including the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, sense sound through particle motion and may use acoustic signals as informational cues. While excessive noise has been shown to have negative physiological effects on adult and larval shellfish, Mytilidae larvae have also demonstrated a positive settlement response to some types of low-frequency anthropogenic noise (Solé et al. 2023). During the summer of …
Effects Of Winter Severity On Regional Variability In The Timing Of Tree Green-Up Across Eastern North America, Dylan Joseph Smith
Effects Of Winter Severity On Regional Variability In The Timing Of Tree Green-Up Across Eastern North America, Dylan Joseph Smith
Master's Theses and Capstones
Climate change is altering the depth and duration of winter across eastern North America, with implications for ecological processes dependent on the coldness and seasonality provided by it. Tree green-up is a critical ecosystem transition point being affected by changing climatic conditions. This study investigates how winter season severity- the cumulative depth and duration of the winter season- affects the timing of spring green-up across a dynamically changing region. Using site-level linear trend analysis, meta-analysis, and mixed-effects linear regression, I assessed spatio-temporal changes in winter severity and green-up timing, employing a precipitation-based winter season severity index and PhenoCam remote sensing …
High Frequency Analysis Of The Carbon Dioxide Linkage Between Terrestrial And Aquatic Ecosystems, Amanda G. Theall
High Frequency Analysis Of The Carbon Dioxide Linkage Between Terrestrial And Aquatic Ecosystems, Amanda G. Theall
Master's Theses and Capstones
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a potent greenhouse gas, and surface water concentrations are often supersaturated relative to the atmosphere. To fully quantify CO2 dynamics in stream ecosystems, it is critical to understand sources of stream CO2, particularly the link between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It is unclear how soil CO2 enters streams and to what magnitude. To address this knowledge gap, I analyzed high-frequency CO2 time-series of soil and stream water sensor data to understand source-sink dynamics and time lags between the two pools. I used seven years of hourly sensor data from three soil depths with upscaled 15-minute stream …
Deciphering Tragedy: Understanding Student-Teacher Ratio's Impact On School Shooting Outcomes, Samantha Sutton
Deciphering Tragedy: Understanding Student-Teacher Ratio's Impact On School Shooting Outcomes, Samantha Sutton
Master's Theses and Capstones
Increasingly fatal school shootings present an urgent challenge for researchers. Apart from issues surrounding firearms, factors that can reduce outcomes from school shootings events are increasingly sought after. Student-teacher ratios are associated with outcomes of school based juvenile delinquency and deviance, where more ideal ratios are linked to lower outcomes and less ideal ratios are linked to higher outcomes. Using this background knowledge, this paper tests for associations between student-teacher ratios and the outcomes, in terms of both casualties and fatalities, of school shooting events. Two different theoretical frameworks are tested to determine which better predicts results: social disorganization theory …
Flexibly Changing Resource Allocation In Individuals With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Mtbi), Alyssa Walker
Flexibly Changing Resource Allocation In Individuals With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Mtbi), Alyssa Walker
Master's Theses and Capstones
Introduction: The current study examined how individuals with mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) can shift their attentional efforts in real-time. These abilities were examined within a dual-task, during which individuals had to perform two tasks simultaneously. The first research question compared the performance of healthy controls and concussion participants on individual subtasks of the dual-task. The second research question explored how effective healthy controls versus concussion participants were in shifting their attentional resources. The final research question examined the effect of fatigue, specifically whether concussion participants would demonstrate a greater fatigue effect and have more difficulty at the end of …
Evaluation Of Artificial Recharge And Groundwater Availability In A Small New England Aquifer, Jon-Erik Tryggestad
Evaluation Of Artificial Recharge And Groundwater Availability In A Small New England Aquifer, Jon-Erik Tryggestad
Master's Theses and Capstones
Artificial recharge (AR) is receiving increased attention as a means to manage water resources in the Northeast United States, as growing communities and increasing drought frequency increase demands on groundwater supplies. The water supply system serving the University of New Hampshire and the Town of Durham has implemented an AR system that recharges the small stratified-drift Spruce Hole Aquifer with surface water from the nearby Lamprey River. The system has been online since 2016, and the existing hydrogeological and system monitoring datasets provide the foundation to develop a numerical model capable of replicating dynamic responses to withdrawals and AR infiltration …
Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances In A Suburbanizing Watershed, Bailey Mullins
Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances In A Suburbanizing Watershed, Bailey Mullins
Master's Theses and Capstones
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent man-made chemicals that accumulate in aquatic environments due to their widespread industrial and commercial use and resistance to degradation. Understanding their spatial distribution and relative abundance in streams draining suburbanizing watersheds is crucial for effective watershed and water quality management. This study investigates how the concentrations and composition of PFAS in surface water and sediment are impacted by urbanization. PFAS were quantified in the Lamprey River watershed, a coastal watershed in southeastern New Hampshire that is experiencing ongoing suburbanization. Sampling sites include tributaries, mainstem, and estuarine areas. Surface water, sediment, and well water …

Using Hyperspectral Uas To Map Hydrated Compounds In Martian Terrestrial Analog Systems, Andrew G. Fleming
Using Hyperspectral Uas To Map Hydrated Compounds In Martian Terrestrial Analog Systems, Andrew G. Fleming
Master's Theses and Capstones
Hypersaline lakes and playas in arid environments on Earth can serve as analogs for paleolake environments of interest on Mars because the hydrated compounds within these systems indicate the presence of ancient hydrologic networks and display strong relationships with microbial life. Traditional orbital observations map these compounds at spatial resolutions ranging from tens to hundreds of meters per pixel. This study uses in-situ measurements, Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) hyperspectral mapping (10 cm), and EnMAP satellite hyperspectral mapping (30 m) to map heterogeneous mineralogical assemblages in hypersaline lakes in Southcentral British Columbia, Canada (BC). We tested the ability of high-resolution UAS …
Linking Nutrient Cycling And Ecological Dynamics: A Case Study Of Internal Phosphorus Loading In The Lake Kanasatka Watershed, Georgia Bunnell
Linking Nutrient Cycling And Ecological Dynamics: A Case Study Of Internal Phosphorus Loading In The Lake Kanasatka Watershed, Georgia Bunnell
Master's Theses and Capstones
Even with extensive implementation of best management practices to mitigate external nutrient loading, numerous New Hampshire lakes are experiencing diminished water quality due to internal phosphorus loading (IPL). Remobilization of legacy nutrients like phosphorus can lead to more frequent and prolonged cyanobacteria blooms and exacerbate the process of eutrophication. This is the case for Lake Kanasatka, located in Moultonborough, New Hampshire, where IPL contributes to nearly 25% of its total phosphorus budget, with that percentage increasing towards 50% by the end of summer, as the hypolimnion becomes anoxic. After years of monitoring and watershed management, Lake Kanasatka received an aluminum …
Effects Of Foil Thickness And Trailing Edge Thickness On The Performance Of Cross-Flow Turbines, Katie Dold
Effects Of Foil Thickness And Trailing Edge Thickness On The Performance Of Cross-Flow Turbines, Katie Dold
Master's Theses and Capstones
The University of New Hampshire (UNH) and Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) collaborated on the fabrication and testing of various blade shapes for cross-flow turbines (CFT). The UNH Wave and Tow Tank was used to test seven different 1.0 m scale, three-bladed cross-flow turbines with modified NACA 0018, 0021, and 0024 hydrofoil profiles with trailing edge thickness of 0.4%, 4.0%, and 8.0% of chord length. The effects of different foil thicknesses and trailing edge thicknesses on the performance of cross-flow turbines were examined motivated by factors such as manufacturability, cost, and structural integrity. These blades were constructed using a novel …
Understanding The Epigenetic Role Of Prmt5 Inhibitors In Rna Binding Proteins And Histones Involved In Merkel Cell Carcinoma Tumorigenesis., Devya Gurung
Master's Theses and Capstones
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer with a 30% mortality rate. In the United States, 80% of MCC cases are linked to the integration of Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV), while the remaining cases are associated with excessive ultraviolet (UV) exposure, leading to UV-induced DNA damage. The therapeutic targets for MCC remain largely unknown. Elevated expression of Protein Arginine Methyltransferase-5 (PRMT5) has been observed in various cancers. My research aims to investigate how arginine methylation impacts the regulatory mechanisms of RNA-binding proteins and histone residues during neuroendocrine transdifferentiation in MCC. Recent studies suggest that low …
Fine-Scale Movements And Inferred Behavioral States Of Jonah Crabs (Cancer Borealis) In Relation To Size, Sex, And Claw Removal Using An Acoustic Telemetry Positioning System, Maureen Estella Madray
Fine-Scale Movements And Inferred Behavioral States Of Jonah Crabs (Cancer Borealis) In Relation To Size, Sex, And Claw Removal Using An Acoustic Telemetry Positioning System, Maureen Estella Madray
Master's Theses and Capstones
AbstractJonah crabs (Cancer borealis) are an economically and ecologically valuable fishery species found in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. As fishing pressure on Jonah crabs in US waters grows, catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) has declined in recent years. The notable decline in CPUE seen in the US Jonah crab fishery indicates that alternative fishery practices, such as claw-only harvesting, should be further investigated to determine the potential utility in improving the health and sustainability of this evolving fishery. Claw harvesting, one potential relief to fishing mortality, may offer a decrease in crab mortality but is also affected by removal technique as well as …
Costs And Benefits Of Reactive Streams For Asynchronous Services, Kyle Ouellette
Costs And Benefits Of Reactive Streams For Asynchronous Services, Kyle Ouellette
Master's Theses and Capstones
Project Reactor is a Java-based Reactive Streams implementation that provides APIs forasynchronous stream processing. This thesis compares the ease of development, pitfalls, and performance of a network traffic processing application implemented using Reactor against an identical application implemented with plain Java. Due to the popularity of the microservices architecture commonly deployed in cloud environments, implementations are tested in environments with limited resources to emulate a scenario where paying for more resources may not be feasible and to compare the two applications under extreme resource contention. Throughout the development of both implementations, pitfalls were encountered in both that lead to large …
King Stephen's War: Military Strategy In A Time Of Anarchy, Keith Sloan
King Stephen's War: Military Strategy In A Time Of Anarchy, Keith Sloan
Master's Theses and Capstones
This paper examines military strategy during the mid twelfth century civil war in England, the so-called “Anarchy.” It demonstrates that King Stephen and his Angevin opponents both employed what would be recognized today as strategy in their conduct of the war. It posits that the two largest factors influencing their respective strategies was the permeability of the English countryside, allowing the easy movement of military forces, and the expensive and time-consuming necessity of besieging castles to gain control of territory, the latter a reality of contemporary technology. Using concepts from the field of strategic studies, it demonstrates that, rather than …
Marine Oil Snow Settling Rates In Cold Water Environments, Quinn Richard Wilkins
Marine Oil Snow Settling Rates In Cold Water Environments, Quinn Richard Wilkins
Master's Theses and Capstones
Naturally forming marine snow has long been studied as a primary transport mechanism of organic carbon from the surface of the ocean to the benthic environments. Before the Deep Water Horizon oil spill, marine snow was not considered a significant transport mechanism for oil spilled at the surface. Interactions between sediment and oil have been studied in the past, however the study of Marine Oil Snow (MOS) is an emerging research topic to better understand the fate of spilled oil. A previous UNH graduate student, Jesse Ross, investigated the potential for spilled oil to interact with marine snow via field …
Interpretive Rules Are The New Regulations: Agency Guidance After Loper Bright, Gwendolyn Savitz
Interpretive Rules Are The New Regulations: Agency Guidance After Loper Bright, Gwendolyn Savitz
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
The Supreme Court’s decision in Loper Bright to end formal deference under Chevron to administrative agencies’ interpretations of ambiguous statutes forces agencies into an unprecedented situation. Courts had deferred to agencies’ interpretations of binding rules since before the Administrative Procedure Act was passed. Now, for the first time, agencies are functionally unable to create new regulations with any confidence they will be upheld. This understanding is reinforced by the Court’s pivot to Skidmore deference. The Skidmore case, and Skidmore deference, only arose because the agency at issue in Skidmore had not been given the authority to create binding regulations by …

A Remote Sensing Analysis Of Eastern Hemlock Decline In Hemlock Woolly Adelgid-Infested Stands In New Hampshire From 2000 – 2022, Molly Cahill
Master's Theses and Capstones
Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is an ecologically-important tree species in the forests of eastern North America. This species is currently declining throughout much of its range due to the invasive insect species hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) and elongate hemlock scale (Fiorinia externa). The introduction of these insects in the region, in addition to drought, development, and native insect species, threatens the persistence of eastern hemlock on the eastern landscape. This study endeavored to use satellite remote sensing to assess eastern hemlock decline in New Hampshire currently and over time from 2000 to 2022. Several classifications were performed in order …
Design And Development Of Systems For Wave-Soil-Structure Interaction Modelling In A Geotechnical Centrifuge, Mark Justin Adler
Design And Development Of Systems For Wave-Soil-Structure Interaction Modelling In A Geotechnical Centrifuge, Mark Justin Adler
Master's Theses and Capstones
As hurricanes, and therefore storm surges, become stronger on average, civil engineering research has increasingly focused on the impact of flooding on coastal communities. While hurricane-induced flood scour has been understood to be a mechanism of structural failure for decades, there is still not a complete model for scour in the near-coast environment. To build on the current body of scour research, an apparatus for the physical modelling of wave-soil-structure interactions has been developed for the University of New Hampshire geotechnical centrifuge laboratory. The new model container design is capable of wave generation, wave absorption, and the real-time measurement of …
Bridge To Real World Communication: Evaluating The Ecological Validity Of Narrative Performance Measures In People With Aphasia, Abigail L. Rowe
Bridge To Real World Communication: Evaluating The Ecological Validity Of Narrative Performance Measures In People With Aphasia, Abigail L. Rowe
Master's Theses and Capstones
Purpose: Standardized aphasia assessments focus on diagnosing and measuring language impairments, but do not capture how well individuals with aphasia (PWA) communicate in everyday contexts. Thus, there is a mismatch between the clinical measures used to quantify aphasia severity and real-world communication. This study aims to bridge that gap by employing naïve listeners’ in an effort toward social validity of a measure of lexical typicality (CoreLexicon) by establishing its relationship with aphasia severity and communicative successMethods: Audio samples of picture descriptions from twenty-four people with aphasia were gathered from existing data at two timepoints (mean between testing = 15.4 months) …
Effects Of Silvicultural Burns On Quercus Rubra Regeneration Near Its Northern Range Limit, Khanh Ton
Effects Of Silvicultural Burns On Quercus Rubra Regeneration Near Its Northern Range Limit, Khanh Ton
Master's Theses and Capstones
Northern red oak (Quercus rubra) is predicted to expand its range northward in the northeastern United States with climate change and could greatly improve resilience of managed forests by expanding the functional diversity. However, red oak regeneration across its range currently faces many challenges including predation, pathogens, and consequences of forest mesophication such as insufficient light and competition with more mesic species. The latter challenges are potentially caused by the near absence of fire in most northeastern forested landscapes since the early 1900s. Therefore, prescribed burns may help address these challenges and hence promote oak recruitment and establishment. We studied …
