Negotiating Belonging: Social Class Identity And The Lived Experiences Of First-Generation College Students, Sarah Grace Barba Jan 2024

Negotiating Belonging: Social Class Identity And The Lived Experiences Of First-Generation College Students, Sarah Grace Barba

Spectrum

In the United States, social class comprises economic, social, and cultural capital but is more commonly associated with economic capital (wealth). In higher education, social class is more visible to first-generation students because they come from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. For first-generation students, education is a ladder to a higher social class. However, research shows that it is challenging for first-generation to achieve this in a dominant middle-class environment in college because of the shock of differences between themselves and their peers, resulting in feelings of not belonging in their campus environment. First-generation students are more likely to arrive unprepared for …

M.S. in Leadership

This research project is aimed to identify the challenges and barriers women face in higher education while striving to obtain leadership positions and provide possible solutions to resolve the gender gaps found in higher education’s leadership. A literature review was conducted, which informed questions that were asked in an interview setting. Interviews were conducted with leaders that identify as women in higher education and sought to provide personalized accounts of the researched trends. Ultimately, despite higher education being perceived as a progressive industry and having legislature in place to combat gender disparities, leadership positions are not reflective of gender distribution …

Enhancing Inpatient Sleep Quality In Patients On An Intermediate Care Unit Through Healthcare Staff Education: A Quality Improvement Project, Avery B. Drouin Jan 2024

Enhancing Inpatient Sleep Quality In Patients On An Intermediate Care Unit Through Healthcare Staff Education: A Quality Improvement Project, Avery B. Drouin

Master's Theses and Capstones

Background

In the Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU), patients often suffer from poor sleep quality due to continuous overnight care and inherent hospital environment noise. Poor sleep can adversely affect recovery, especially for cardiac patients, who constitute a significant portion of the IMCU population. Improving sleep quality in these patients is essential for their recovery and overall well-being.

Local Problem

Despite the importance of adequate sleep, only 47% of patients in the hospital that houses the microsystem reported a quiet environment at night using the Hospital Compare online survey platform. Disruptions from alarms, phones, and care activities significantly impact sleep quality, …

Faculty Publications

This Pilot and Feasibility project involved CAST, a non-profit education research organization, the University of New Hampshire (UNH), and outdoor-recreation and informal STEM community-based youth-serving organizations in New Hampshire (NH). The research investigated the contributions of youth's participation in outdoor recreation in developing high school aged students' STEM identities and considerations of careers in STEM. The study addressed three questions: How can outdoor recreation be used as an informal STEM learning context to broaden participation for underrepresented rural youth who face known barriers to the traditional learning experiences necessary for developing positive STEM identities? How can outdoor recreation be used …

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is an exploratory study of how campus police officers perceive and respond to the changes in marijuana laws. It focuses on campus police departments in states that have passed marijuana laws that fit into one of three categories of laws: – the legalization of marijuana, a medical exception to the use of marijuana, and the decriminalization of marijuana for possession of small amounts. Because of its exploratory nature, this research focuses on campus police departments at each state’s flagship institutions that have passed legislation that fits into one of the three categories of laws. Integrating Behavioral Health Into Family Medicine: Improving Access To Specialty Care For Medically Underserved Community Using A Collaborative Care Model, Christina M. Stephens

DNP Scholarly Projects

Primary care, an extension of family medicine remains a key access point for patients entering the healthcare system. Accessing specialty psychiatric services can be limited in rural communities due to provider shortages and geographical constraints. ‘Routines’ And ‘Formulaic Language’ In Conversation Analysis, Danielle Pillet-Shore Jan 2024

‘Routines’ And ‘Formulaic Language’ In Conversation Analysis, Danielle Pillet-Shore

Faculty Publications

Though the field of conversation analysis (CA) was founded upon examinations of interactional “routines” such as conversation openings and closings, conceptualizing and categorizing communicative phenomena as “formulaic” is anathema to CA. This chapter details how, since its inception, CA work has empirically elucidated how participants to recorded episodes of naturally occurring social interaction actively and collaboratively accomplish conversational activities as ‘routine’ or not by selecting from available action alternatives, spontaneously coordinating their selections vis-à-vis one another. Taking a multimodal CA approach, this chapter reviews state-of-the art literature on how people open and close in-person and telephone conversations, showing the immense …

Improving Postpartum Depression Education Within The Microsystem, Mackenzie A. Sturdevant Jan 2024

Improving Postpartum Depression Education Within The Microsystem, Mackenzie A. Sturdevant

Master's Theses and Capstones

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental health issue affecting a substantial percentage of new mothers, ranging from "baby blues" to severe forms like postpartum psychosis. Maternity nurses play a crucial role in early detection and education due to the gap in postpartum care follow-up appointments, which can delay necessary interventions.

LOCAL PROBLEM: Despite the critical role of maternity nurses, there is variability in their preparedness to educate and support patients regarding PPD during the immediate postpartum period. This study aims to enhance maternity nurses' knowledge and confidence in providing PPD education through a quality improvement (QI) project within …
