Teaching Archival Silences With The New Hampshire Maps Collection, Kai H. Uchida Mar 2025

Teaching Archival Silences With The New Hampshire Maps Collection, Kai H. Uchida

Faculty Publications

This conference presentation was given at the Annual Spring 2025 Meeting for New England Archivists.

For the past two years, the University Archivist at Milne Special Collections and Archives at the University of New Hampshire has partnered with an instructor in the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Department to teach about its historic map collections. This presentation will discuss the planning, execution, and lessons learned from using a historic state maps collection to educate students on the concept of "archival silence," and to advocate for the use of historical map collections to develop critical archival and data literacies.

Calculating 3d Rugosity Maps For Complex Habitat Scans, Kindrat Beregovyi, Jennifer A. Dijkstra, Thomas Butkiewicz Feb 2025

Calculating 3d Rugosity Maps For Complex Habitat Scans, Kindrat Beregovyi, Jennifer A. Dijkstra, Thomas Butkiewicz

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Advances in 3D scanning and reconstruction techniques, such as structure-from-motion, have resulted in an abundance of increasingly-detailed 3D habitat models. However, many existing methods for calculating structural complexity of these models use 2.5D techniques that fail to capture the details of truly 3D models with overlapping features. This paper presents novel algorithms that extend traditional rugosity metrics to generate multi-scale rugosity maps for complex 3D models. Models are repeatedly subdivided for local analysis using multiple 3D grids, which are jittered to smooth results and suppress extreme values from edge cases and poorly-fit reference planes. A rugosity-minimizing technique is introduced to …

Toward Quantifying Interpolation Uncertainty In Set-Line Spacing Hydrographic Surveys, Elias Adediran, Christos Kastrisios, Kim Lowell, Glen Rice, Qi Zhang Feb 2025

Toward Quantifying Interpolation Uncertainty In Set-Line Spacing Hydrographic Surveys, Elias Adediran, Christos Kastrisios, Kim Lowell, Glen Rice, Qi Zhang

Faculty Publications

The oceans remain one of Earth’s last great unknowns, with about 74% still unmapped to modern standards. Consequently, interpolation is employed to create seamless digital bathymetric models (DBMs) from incomplete hydrographic datasets, but this introduces unquantified depth uncertainties. This study aims to estimate and characterize uncertainties arising from set-line spacing hydrographic surveys, which are important for nautical charting, navigational safety, and many other applications. By sampling at different line spacings four complete coverage testbeds that vary in slope and roughness, the study interpolates across entire testbed areas using Spline, Inverse Distance Weighting, and Linear interpolation. The resulting interpolation uncertainties are …

A Comparison Of Methods For Binning Responses To Open-Ended Survey Items About Everyday Events: A New Tailored-Binning Approach, Derrick M. Angier, John D. Mayer Feb 2025

A Comparison Of Methods For Binning Responses To Open-Ended Survey Items About Everyday Events: A New Tailored-Binning Approach, Derrick M. Angier, John D. Mayer

UNH Personality Lab

Psychologists and other researchers employ diverse types of surveys and survey items. Lifespace-type items include questions about a person’s external life conditions and activities, for example, “How many hours did you spend playing video games last week?” and elicit countable responses, for example, 0 hours, < 1 hour, 1-2 hours, 3-5 hours, etc., where the response intervals are referred to as bins. We report on a procedure for creating tailored bins for participants and compare it to two other binning approaches in an original and a replication study (Ns = 263 and 246). The Tailored binning approach developed here is highly structured, but, for convenience, can also be applied in less formal fashions. In the structured form focused on here, it compares favorably with alternative approaches such as Equal Percentage and Equal Interval methods. The pros and cons of each method …

Covering The Care: Most Costly Health Conditions – Metabolic Disorders, Hemophilia, Cancers, And Transplants Top The List, Bridget Green, Bethany Swanson, Deborah Fournier, Erica Plante

All Materials

This data brief presents a retrospective analysis of available medical claims data from New Hampshire’s commercial, Medicaid, and Medicare insurance programs. This brief focuses on the conditions that incur the highest medical costs, regardless of their prevalence among the population. Metabolic disorders, hemophilia, certain cancers, and transplants were identified across all three payers as some of the costliest conditions. Most of these conditions have low prevalence and could, in some instances, be considered rare. There is variability in the prevalence of these conditions by payer type and there is a variability in the costs paid by payer type, with commercial …

Emotional Intelligence And Socioemotional Attributes: Distinct Constructs And Their Uses, John D. Mayer, David R. Caruso Jan 2025

Emotional Intelligence And Socioemotional Attributes: Distinct Constructs And Their Uses, John D. Mayer, David R. Caruso

UNH Personality Lab

We examine evidence for the validity of different measures under the label emotional intelligence (EI). Some measures are valid for the assessment of EI and others are valid for the assessment of socioemotional attributes (SEA). The constructs of EI and SEA are defined and measures of each described, along with the mental response processes the measures elicit: test-takers’ abilities, self-estimated attributes, or observer reports. Both EI and SEA measures are valid but for distinctly different purposes, and the two classes of measures make different predictions. We add our voices to those who have advocated for dropping the EI label from …

Crrc Noaa Glcoe Oil Spill Modeling Workshop Report, Coastal Response Research Center Jan 2025

Crrc Noaa Glcoe Oil Spill Modeling Workshop Report, Coastal Response Research Center

Coastal Response Research Center

NOAA’s Office of Response & Restoration (OR&R) partnered with Coastal Response Research Center (CRRC) to facilitate an International Oil Spill Modeling Working Group (IOSMWG) starting in February 2024. This effort was funded by the USCG’s Great Lakes Oil Spill Center of Expertise (GLCOE) with the following objectives:

  • Improve collaboration among oil spill modelers
  • Understand current state of oil spill modeling with respect to uncertainty, shorelines, coastal environments and countermeasures
  • Identify potential advancements needed in uncertainty, shorelines, coastal environments and countermeasures
  • Identify knowledge/research gaps to be addressed in uncertainty, shorelines, coastal environments and countermeasures

Though the IOSMWG continues to be facilitated …
