Biologically Inspired Computer Vision/ Applications Of Computational Models Of Primate Visual Systems In Computer Vision And Image Processing, Reza Hojjaty Saeedy
Biologically Inspired Computer Vision/ Applications Of Computational Models Of Primate Visual Systems In Computer Vision And Image Processing, Reza Hojjaty Saeedy
Doctoral Dissertations
Biologically Inspired Computer VisionApplications of Computational Models of Primate Visual Systems in Computer Vision and Image Processing Reza Hojjaty Saeedy Abstract Biological vision systems are remarkable at extracting and analyzing the information that is essential for vital functional needs. They perform all these tasks with both high sensitivity and strong reliability. They can efficiently and quickly solve most of the difficult computa- tional problems that are still challenging for artificial systems, such as scene segmentation, 3D/depth perception, motion recognition, etc. So it is no surprise that biological vision systems have been a source of inspiration for computer vision problems. I. Incorporation Of Functionality At The Β-Position For The Zinc-Mediated Chain Extension Reaction Ii. Formal Synthesis Of Heliotridane And Pseudoheliotridane Through A Zinc-Mediated Chain Extension Approach, Nicholas Alexander Arnista
Doctoral Dissertations
The zinc-mediated chain extension reaction has been previously developed to incorporate alkyl or aryl substituents at the β position of the chain-extended product. The incorporation of heteroatom functionality at the β position of the chain-extended product was demonstrated through the use of a functionalized zinc carbenoid species. Silyl ether-functionalized geminal diiodides were used in the chain extension reaction with low to modest yields. Optimization of the chain extension reaction was performed by modification of solvent, reaction temperature, reaction time, and addition of diiodide. The chain extension reaction was performed on several different substrates, such as β-keto esters, β-keto amides, and …
Post-Liquefaction Residual Strength Of Saturated And Partially Saturated Soils, Ian Douglas Gates
Post-Liquefaction Residual Strength Of Saturated And Partially Saturated Soils, Ian Douglas Gates
Master's Theses and Capstones
Post-liquefaction response and residual strength play important roles in stability assessment of liquefied ground. Considering the recent advancements in application of induced partial saturation for liquefaction mitigation, the state of knowledge in estimating the residual strength should be extended for liquefied desaturated soils. In this thesis, the residual strength response of a clean sand at different saturation levels was investigated using a Ring Shear Device (RSD). Direct air injection was used to desaturate the soil, which helped mitigating the liquefaction under cyclic loading. However, by raising the shear strain level, both saturated and partially saturated soils were liquefied followed by …

Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase (Pde6): Structure, Regulatory Mechanisms, And Implications For Treatment Of Retinal Diseases, Rick H. Cote, Richa Gupta, Michael J. Irwin, Xin Wang
Faculty Publications
The photoreceptor phosphodiesterase (PDE6) is a member of large family of Class I phosphodiesterases responsible for hydrolyzing the second messengers cAMP and cGMP. PDE6 consists of two catalytic subunits and two inhibitory subunits that form a tetrameric protein. PDE6 is a peripheral membrane protein that is localized to the signaling-transducing compartment of rod and cone photoreceptors. As the central effector enzyme of the G-protein coupled visual transduction pathway, activation of PDE6 catalysis causes in a rapid decrease in cGMP levels that results in closure of cGMP-gated ion channels in the photoreceptor plasma membrane. Because of its importance in the phototransduction …
Implementation Of An Individualized Onboarding And Training For Nurse Managers, Marcelo Castro
Implementation Of An Individualized Onboarding And Training For Nurse Managers, Marcelo Castro
DNP Scholarly Projects
Abstract
BACKGROUND: The onboarding and training of nurse managers varies drastically in healthcare institutions across the US, even within the same organization. Though evidence-based studies have demonstrated that the onboarding and training process are related to employee engagement, retention, and to the achievement of positive departmental and institutional goals and outcomes, most healthcare organizations do not invest in providing an effective onboarding and training based on evidence models and frameworks. This project was conducted at a 345-bed tertiary teaching medical center in the Boston area to determine the need for instituting an effective evidence-based onboarding and training process for nurse …
Implementing A Transitional Care Protocol To Reduce Psychiatric Rehospitalizations, Charles Wangui
Implementing A Transitional Care Protocol To Reduce Psychiatric Rehospitalizations, Charles Wangui
DNP Scholarly Projects
Readmission rates in hospitals across the country are at an all-time high. Patients being
discharged from the hospital may feel fearful, especially if they are experiencing a new onset of
illness. Many patients wonder how they will deal with or manage their illness once they return
home. The goal for hospitals should be to reduce readmissions by addressing the factors that
impact readmission. Improved care coordination is one of the goals of transitional care. Patients'
functioning and quality of life increase when hospital readmissions are reduced. Readmissions
can be reduced by addressing care management before and after discharge in all …

The purpose of the current project was, therefore, to develop an intervention which helps to improve employee mental health in healthcare settings with focus on depression and examine workplace factors which influence depression among employees of the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic in Washington District of Columbia. Methods: A pre-intervention survey was conducted among 43 employees. …
Three Essays In Applied Microeconomics: Spillover Effects Of Anti Discrimination And Anti Violence Policies, Gokhan Kumpas
Three Essays In Applied Microeconomics: Spillover Effects Of Anti Discrimination And Anti Violence Policies, Gokhan Kumpas
Doctoral Dissertations
In this research, I examine the intended and unintended consequences of three highly debated policies at the state and federal level: enactment of Title IX, state anti-bullying laws, and warrantless arrest laws aimed at curbing domestic violence. My first essay examines the causal relationship between athletic participation and means-tested program participation. I use the variation in the implementation of Title IX and find that a 30 percentage-point increase in female athletic participation induced by Title IX increased program participation among 25 to 40-year-old females by 2.8 percentage-points. This effect persists across SNAP, TANF, and Medicaid recipiency. Event study analysis and …

Whiteness, Discipline, And Educational Disadvantage: A Case For California Schools, Dow Drukker
Master's Theses and Capstones
Over the last thirty years, the student population of schools in the United States have become increasingly more racially diverse, while teachers have remained predominantly white. During this same period, school disciplinary policies and practices have become increasingly punitive. Literature has shown that this shift disproportionately targets students of color. Behavior such as defiance and disruption are now offenses that warrant the suspension or expulsion of a student. These behaviors are subjective in nature. In using their discretion to identify defiance and disruption, teachers may administer discipline in a racially unequal manner. While prior research has documented the emergence of …

“Follow the science” became the mantra for responding to COVID-19 pandemic. However, for the public this also meant “follow the scientists,” and this led to uneasiness as some viewed scientists as not credible. We investigate how beliefs about the way scientists develop their findings affect pandemic-related views. Our analysis shows that beliefs about scientists’ objectivity predict views regrading coronavirus-related risks, behavioral changes, and policy priorities. While political party identity also predicts views about COVID-19-related concerns, these vary by political leaders whose approaches embraced versus dismissed science based strategies, highlighting the importance of perceptions of scientists in shaping pandemic related attitudes …
Epigenetic Regulation During The Differentiation Of Embryonic Stem Cells Into Cardiomyocytes, Nan Yang
Epigenetic Regulation During The Differentiation Of Embryonic Stem Cells Into Cardiomyocytes, Nan Yang
Master's Theses and Capstones
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, constituting a quarter of total deaths every year. One reason behind the high mortality of heart disease is the limited regenerative capacity of cardiomyocytes (CMs), which carry out the contractile function for the heart. Lineage-specific differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into CMs provides a promising therapeutic strategy, warranting in-depth research for the mechanistic understanding of this sophisticated process to achieve homogenous production of cardiomyocytes with high purity and large quantity. Three-dimensional culture systems, such as microporous hydrogel, have been demonstrated to promote CM differentiation but little is known …

Efficient Modeling Of An Array Antenna And Requirements For Maritime Mobile Reception Of Meteorological Satellite Imagery, Alasdair Dunlap-Smith
Master's Theses and Capstones
Wireless communication is an integral part of safety at sea. Direct broadcasts from public weather satellites on L- and X-band provide real-time weather observations and weather product dissemination to end users. These high-bandwidth broadcasts offer enhanced data throughput and require accurate pointing of high-gain antennas.
An electronically-steered array antenna can provide high gain and rapid beam steering without moving parts, suitable for deployment on small vessels offshore. Figures of merit, such as array antenna gain and input impedance, vary with the beam steering angle as a consequence of mutual coupling between array elements. The electromagnetic design of an electronically-steered array …

Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate And The Racial Multiplier: Clinical Implications And Current Attitudes, Brittney A. Spooner
Honors Theses and Capstones
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with high morbidity and mortality and has high and increasing incidence worldwide. CKD is characterized by a reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR), but as GFR is difficult to measure directly, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) equations have been created to measure serum creatinine levels as a function of GFR. Some eGFR equations contain a racial multiplier that increases the eGFR of black patients, causing a spurious increase in reported kidney function. This study included a literature search that collected information on the rationale behind the multipliers usage and a survey that gathered information …

Mimicking The Effect Of Prolactin On Stat3/Stat5 Activity In Breast Cancer, Jennifer N. Barbuto, Sarah R. Walker
Honors Theses and Capstones
Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) 3 and 5 are commonly constitutively activated in breast cancer. STAT5 can outcompete STAT3 and reduce cell proliferation and metastasis. STAT5 activation is stimulated by prolactin, a natural hormone that can be harmful at high levels. The aim of this study is to identify some possible previously developed drugs that mimic the effect of prolactin and STAT5 without the added risk in MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells. Using the CLUE database query app and STAT5 up- and downregulation signatures, three drugs (X, K, and M) were chosen based on their similarity in signatures to …

Presidents And The U.S. Constitution: The Executive’S Role In Interpreting The Supreme Law Of The Land, Mitchell Scacchi
Presidents And The U.S. Constitution: The Executive’S Role In Interpreting The Supreme Law Of The Land, Mitchell Scacchi
Honors Theses and Capstones
In 1832, President Andrew Jackson issued a veto message claiming the same duty as the Supreme Court to interpret the U.S. Constitution. Do modern presidents exercise the principal role in interpreting the U.S. Constitution that President Jackson claimed was their duty, and, if so, in what ways do they choose to articulate their interpretations? The hypothesis is that modern presidents have exercised a principal role in interpreting the U.S. Constitution similar to the interpretative duty expressed by President Jackson, and they perform this duty, in part, through the issuance of veto messages and signing statements. After a content analysis of …

Ethical Use Of Beauty In Advertising, Koca Chan
Ethical Use Of Beauty In Advertising, Koca Chan
Honors Theses and Capstones
The use of beauty images in advertising has been generally deemed to be unethical in society, based on the general negative presupposition in modern western culture. The ethicalness of the display of high standards of beauty in advertisements is especially controversial and questionable in the advertising industry. Advertising watchdogs, social groups, and individuals have investigated the possibility of banning the display of high standards of beauty to be displayed in advertisings and publications. This paper argues that image advertising of high beauty standards may not be necessarily unethical in all situations. And under certain conditions, by considering and combining image(s) …

Uses Unaddressed: How Social Technologies Tacitly Allow Gender-Based Violence, Brooke J. Marston
Honors Theses and Capstones
Growing technological capabilities have enhanced and intensified the potential for surveillance in many areas of life. Particularly, the placement of advanced technology in the hands of everyday people has produced ample opportunities for interpersonal monitoring. This growing capacity to surveil others we know without sophisticated techniques has concerning implications for acts of gender-based violence and intimate partner violence, which often hinge on surveillance, isolation, and control. Often, technology is used to the advantage of abusers in achieving such ends, and the wealth of personal information that is often available online leaves users vulnerable to acts of gender-based violence such as …

From Community Policing To Political Police In Nicaragua, Lucia Dammert, Mary Fran T. Malone
From Community Policing To Political Police In Nicaragua, Lucia Dammert, Mary Fran T. Malone
Faculty Publications
In a region plagued by high rates of violent crime and repressive policing practices, Nicaragua has earned a reputation as exceptional. Despite poverty, inequality, and a historical legacy of political violence and repression, Nicaragua has defied regional trends. It has registered low rates of violent crime while deploying policing practices that emphasized prevention over repression. April 2018 marked an end to this exceptionalism. Police attacked anti-government protestors, and launched a sustained campaign against dissidents that continues to the present day. While the Nicaraguan police had long cultivated a reputation as community-oriented and non-repressive, they appeared to quickly change into a …
