The Long And Short Of It: Exploring The Essential Dynamics Of Select Geophysical Flows, Adhithiya Sivakumar
The Long And Short Of It: Exploring The Essential Dynamics Of Select Geophysical Flows, Adhithiya Sivakumar
Doctoral Dissertations
Geophysical flows are central to important climatological processes, yet their strong turbulence and additional complexities -- density stratification, wave-current interaction, and phase change -- make analytical prediction and direct numerical simulation infeasible in many regimes. This dissertation adopts a reductionist approach in which simplified representations -- often inspired by observed scale disparities -- are utilized to isolate and investigate the organizing mechanisms of these complex flows. Within this framework, three distinct but thematically connected problems are studied.
We first study Langmuir turbulence in the open ocean, in which surface gravity waves interact with wind-driven currents to organize the mixed layer …
From Surfaces To Scaffolds: Tuning Hydrogel Microenvironments To Control Cell-Material Interaction, Tran Truong
From Surfaces To Scaffolds: Tuning Hydrogel Microenvironments To Control Cell-Material Interaction, Tran Truong
Doctoral Dissertations
The last 40 years of in vitro cell and tissue biology have relied heavily on tissue culture plastic (TCPS), which offers high transparency and a simple, user-friendly method for growing adherent cells. Unfortunately, TCPS has limitations, such as its rigidity, which may alter cell shape, disrupt cell signaling, and ultimately affect cell fate. The poor control over the adsorption of proteins to TCPS and the fact that surface chemistry is fixed on this material are only two examples of the limitations that motivate the development of hydrogel-based culturing platforms, during which the mechanical properties, charge, hydrophobicity, and ligand presentation can …
Emotional Complexity In Context: Within-Person Variability In Emotional Granularity, Emotion Covariation, And Emodiversity, Kristen Diann Petagna
Emotional Complexity In Context: Within-Person Variability In Emotional Granularity, Emotion Covariation, And Emodiversity, Kristen Diann Petagna
Doctoral Dissertations
Key features of emotional complexity include emotional granularity, the ability to identify feelings with precision; emodiversity, the number and evenness of different emotions experienced; and emotion covariation, the tendency to experience positive and negative emotions independently. Prior work has largely treated these features as trait-like. This dissertation examines whether these features are dynamic by investigating how they vary within individuals over time and across contexts. In Chapter 2, participants (N =123) reported their emotions multiple times a day for 6 weeks and completed biweekly assessments of mental health symptoms. Emotional granularity and covariation increased over time, whereas emodiversity decreased, and …
Exploring The Effects Of Voluntary Wheel Running On Inhibitory Control, Ava Prieto
Exploring The Effects Of Voluntary Wheel Running On Inhibitory Control, Ava Prieto
Honors Theses and Capstones
Inhibitory control, a central component of executive function, is the ability to suppress unwanted actions in response to a stimulus (Verbruggen et al., 2014; Verbruggen et al., 2019) and is one of the best indicators of executive task management as well as the ability to prevent unwanted prepotent responses. This capacity is essential for goal specific behavior and for responding flexibly to challenges. The present study examined the effects of voluntary wheel running on inhibitory control in two cohorts of Long-Evans rats using a rodent variant of the canonical stop-signal task. We found that rats with access to an active …

Tmem116 Crispr-Mediated Knockout Prevents Proper Lens Regeneration In Iberian-Ribbed Newts, Damien T. Mann
Tmem116 Crispr-Mediated Knockout Prevents Proper Lens Regeneration In Iberian-Ribbed Newts, Damien T. Mann
Honors Theses and Capstones
Eye diseases like cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and glaucoma are widespread and detrimental conditions affecting many people across the globe. While there are reliable and successful treatments for those with cataracts that can reverse vision impediments, others like glaucoma and AMD have limited treatment options. Additionally, eye damage resulting from these conditions is commonly irreversible, establishing a need for new treatment options. The Iberian-ribbed newt, Pleurodeles waltl, is a salamander species primarily studied for their amazing regenerative capabilities. Particularly, these newts are capable of de novo lens regeneration after a complete resection, providing a unique opportunity to study regeneration …
A Period And Cohort Analysis Of Sustained Fertility Decline In The United States, Tyrus Parker
A Period And Cohort Analysis Of Sustained Fertility Decline In The United States, Tyrus Parker
Doctoral Dissertations
Fertility rates in the United States have declined by 21 percent since the most recent peak in 2007. Despite more childbearing-aged women in the United States, this fertility rate decline has resulted in fewer births. Tracking these shifts is not a purely demographic exercise. Rather, a declining number of births has wide-ranging effects on society, including school closures, loss of labor and delivery centers, and eventually labor force implications as the number of workers shrinks. To examine the causes of modern fertility decline, this dissertation contains three interrelated analyses. I first examine population-wide fertility trends using data from the Center …
Perception Of Posed And Naturally Occurring Emotion Expressions In Close Friendships, Kaitlyn M. Mcmullen
Perception Of Posed And Naturally Occurring Emotion Expressions In Close Friendships, Kaitlyn M. Mcmullen
Doctoral Dissertations
While relationships are critical to our daily emotional lives, the limited research on emotion perception among close friends presents inconsistent evidence concerning whether differences exist between close friends and strangers. The present work examined the ways in which familiarity between close friends’ shapes emotion perception. In Study 1a, expressors provided both naturally occurring and dynamic posed emotion expressions for seven emotion categories (anger, sadness, fear, disgust, happiness, surprise, and neutral) in order to develop a stimulus set where the stereotypicality of the expressions varies within-subjects. In Study 1b, a self-identified close friend of each expressor viewed and rated the expressions …
Syrup Production And Tree Physiology, David Blakney Moore
Syrup Production And Tree Physiology, David Blakney Moore
Doctoral Dissertations
Maple (Acer spp.) syrup production is a culturally and economically important activity in North America, and other types of trees are economically important (or show potential to become more economically important) for their syrup as well. For both established and novel syrup-producing trees, questions remain about tapping sustainability and the physiological mechanisms that underpin winter-dormant-season stem-pressurization cycles, which create the pressures necessary for sap harvesting. I investigated aspects of tapping sustainability related to two important xylem functions, storage and transport. I measured nonstructural carbohydrate concentrations and radial growth of tapped and untapped sugar maples (Acer saccharum) and found a weak …

New Hampshire Shellfish Under Pressure: Physiological Effects Of Climate Change And Toxic Algal Blooms, Olivia Boyan
New Hampshire Shellfish Under Pressure: Physiological Effects Of Climate Change And Toxic Algal Blooms, Olivia Boyan
UNH URC Open (2026 and after)
Climate change driven effects on the ocean, including warming water, acidification, and changes in the presence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) are causing metabolic pressures on marine organisms, particularly in the Gulf of Maine. Shellfish are susceptible to these pressures because their metabolic processes including growth and respiration are influenced by water temperature, pH, and consumption of algal toxins. This study investigates the effects of ocean warming, acidification, and diet toxicity level on the growth and respiration of Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica), and Sea scallops (Placopecten magellanicus). Selected individuals were subjected to water treatments simulating ambient …

Where people end up in the income and wealth distribution has a powerful and lasting influence on how healthy they are and how long they live. This is not just a story about poverty versus comfort. Across the entire population, health improves step by step as financial resources increase. Researchers call this pattern the health gradient.
This brief explains why that gradient exists. Drawing on decades of research from economics, public health, and social epidemiology, it shows how limited financial resources shape health through multiple pathways that unfold over different time horizons—from immediate consequences to cumulative effects that build …

Evaluating The Role Of Seaweeds In Dairy Production: Impacts On In Vitro Ruminal Fermentation, And In Vivo Mineral Utilization And Metabolic Status, William Mitchell Sims
Doctoral Dissertations
Dietary inclusion of seaweed in ruminant diets has been studied for more than 5 decades. Early research in seaweed focused primarily on potential health benefits, but recent interest has shifted the paradigm for its use as a nutritional tool to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. As new seaweeds are identified for their ability to reduce gas emissions, the pendulum will swing once more to understand the impact seaweeds have on ruminant health and production. The overall objective of this dissertation is to investigate digestibility and fermentation, as well as alterations in metabolic and mineral status in ruminants fed various seaweed species. …
Evolution Of Regulatory Pathways In Vibrio Fischeri Strains Impacts Biofilm Phenotypes And Symbiotic Capacity And Curriculum Interventions Differ In Their Impact On Microbiology Utility Value In Nursing Students, Jennifer Calawa
Doctoral Dissertations
Vibrio fischeri strains vary in their capacity to form mutualisms with animal hosts such as the Hawaiian bobtail squid Euprymna scolopes, yet these differences are often not explained by phylogeny. Successful colonization requires biofilm production, which is tightly controlled by a complex network of two-component system regulators including hybrid histidine kinases BinK and RemK, as characterized in the model symbiont strain ES114. Divergence in biofilm network architecture or regulatory logic may lead to strain-specific differences in biofilm formation, limiting symbiotic potential. Part I of this work investigates genetic divergence underlying reduced colonization capacity in strain H905, a planktonic isolate and …
Focal Engine: Filling A Gap Between Game Engines And Big-Data Scientific Visualization Packages, Kindrat Beregovyi
Focal Engine: Filling A Gap Between Game Engines And Big-Data Scientific Visualization Packages, Kindrat Beregovyi
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents Focal Engine, a novel 3D visualization engine designed to bridge the gap between game engines and scientific visualization tools. Game engines offer accessible interfaces and high-performance rendering but struggle with large-scale scientific datasets, while tools like ParaView and VTK handle complex data structures effectively but lack intuitive editing capabilities and modern rendering features. Focal Engine combines the accessibility and rendering performance of game engines with the data handling capabilities and analytical tools of scientific visualization platforms. The engine's capabilities are validated through multiple applications and projects, for example: HabiCAT 3D performs 3D complexity measurements on ocean floor …
Development And Characterization Of Bulk Dsdna-Based Materials Using Biologically Derived Plasmid Dna, Wynter Amythyst Paiva
Development And Characterization Of Bulk Dsdna-Based Materials Using Biologically Derived Plasmid Dna, Wynter Amythyst Paiva
Doctoral Dissertations
Double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) exhibits many unique sequence-independent properties that remain underutilized in materials science. The exceptional length, solubility, biocompatibility, imageability, molecular recognition capabilities, and topological control of DNA makes it an ideal candidate for the creation of bespoke biomaterials and investigation of fundamental relationships in polymer physics. Unfortunately, translation of DNA-based materials from the microscale to macroscale has been hindered by source constraints and limitations in chemical modification of biologically derived DNA. This work seeks to expand the utility of dsDNA from the benchtop to real world applications. Establishing dsDNA as a commodity polymer will aid in the development of …
Adrift: The Influence Of Shelf Circulation And Larval Dispersal On Coastal Biogeography At Basin And Global Scales, Will Lush
Doctoral Dissertations
The dispersal of larvae plays an important role in determining the distribution of benthic meroplanktonic organisms in the coastal ocean. The work presented in this defense uses biophysical modeling approaches to examine the interaction of larval dispersal with coastal circulation and the impact of these interactions on contemporary coastal biogeography at global scales.I begin by presenting a novel method for validating numerical dispersal estimates against drifter observations from the Global Drifter Program. We find that median dispersal estimates match observations to within 5 percent, while model estimates underpredict the spread of drifters around this median by between 30 and 50 …
Regional Analysis Changes In The Salt Marsh: How The Past Is Influencing The Present, Elizabeth May Gorrill
Regional Analysis Changes In The Salt Marsh: How The Past Is Influencing The Present, Elizabeth May Gorrill
Master's Theses and Capstones
Salt marshes are critical coastal wetlands that provide valuable ecosystem services including coastal erosion control, carbon sequestration, water quality improvement, fisheries habitats, and recreational and economic opportunities for coastal communities. To better understand salt marshes and the changes occurring within the systems due to environmental and human factors, monitoring of established sites is conducted to look at variables such as vegetation cover, elevation, fauna, and vertical accretion. Methodological differences amongst monitoring efforts can result in data that has differing implications when analyzed and interpreted, so documentation of protocols (and any deviance from them) is imperative when bringing together datasets. The …

The Effects Of Graded Amounts Of Nicotinic Acid On Cow Health, Colostrum Yield And Quality Of Prepartum Multiparous Jersey Cows And Growth In Their Subsequent Calves, Lydia Joy Valentine
Master's Theses and Capstones
This study evaluated the impact of graded amounts of nicotinic acid (NA) with a negative DCAD diet on cow health, colostrum composition and calf growth performance of Jersey cattle. We hypothesized that NA supplementation would increase IgG concentration of colostrum, increase calf intestinal absorption and growth and improve cow metabolic health. Thirty multiparous Jersey cows were blocked by calving date and assigned to either 0, 8 or 16 g/d of NA supplementation on top of the -40 mEq/kg DCAD dry cow diet. Blood samples were collected weekly for ketone analysis. Urine was collected three times weekly for pH, creatinine and …

Fall 2025 Environmental Sciences Seminar Series, Jessica Gersony, Jessica Gersony
NRESS Seminars
The field of ecology contains systemic issues and inequalities due to a history of exclusionary forces (e.g. colonialism). In response, there is a push to reimagine research labs outside of these forces. In this talk, Gersony will present the PLACE (PLant physiology, Art, and Community Engagement) lab’s artistic and scientific exploration of northeastern tree responses to climate change, and also discuss the lab’s broader project of reimagining a new way forward centered around joy, art, and community.
