The following study examines the manner in which nineteenth-century British novels use a Semitic discourse to imagine and construct Christian English people as racially pure. One result of the growing presence of assimilated Jewish people living in England in the nineteenth century was the fear that they might pass undetected and pollute the "purity" of English blood. In response to this phenomenon, the narratives in this study illuminate not only cultural anxiety about the historical lineage that links Judaism and Christianity, but the threat this link posed to the very idea of English Christian racial purity. The Geochemistry Of Boron And Lithium In Mid -Ocean Ridge Hydrothermal Vent Fluids, Alison Marie Bray

Examining the chemistry of hydrothermal vent fluids can provide insight into processes occurring below the seafloor along the mid-ocean ridge axis. Boron and lithium in hydrothermal vent fluids were studied because previous results indicated that these elements might be useful tracers of water-rock processes. The B concentration and the Li isotopic signature of hydrothermal fluids from four areas on the mid-ocean ridge were examined in order to better constrain the physical and chemical controls on these elements.

The results for B suggest that water-rock reaction and phase separation are important controls on the B content of hydrothermal fluids. Boron concentrations …

The Relationship Between Fruit Color Traits And Anthocyanin Genes In Diploid Fragaria, Chaoyang Deng

A candidate gene approach was used to determine the likely molecular identity of the c locus (yellow fruit color) in Fragaria vesca, a diploid (2n = 2x = 14) strawberry. Using PCR with degenerate primer pairs, intron-containing segments of structural genes coding for the enzymes: chalcone synthase (CHS), chalcone isomerase (CHI), flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H), dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR), anthocyanindin synthase (ANS), and one Del-like regulatory gene (RAN) in the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway were amplified, cloned and sequenced. Studies that have compared intimate partner violence among Mexican Americans and Non-Mexican Whites have found conflicting results. The results can be grouped into three categories, those that found Mexican Americans have higher assault rates, those that found Mexican Americans have lower assault rates, and those that found no differences between both ethnic groups. This study analyzed a sample of 348 college students to examine the role that Mexican ethnicity and acculturation into Anglo American society by Mexican Americans plays in predicting intimate partner violence. A Life Cycle Assessment model, with an integrated impact assessment, is used to estimate average external economic damages from the hydro fuel cycle. Aggregated average damage assessments of the hydro fuel cycle are complementary to marginal and site specific assessments, and are useful for general energy policy planning. For the upstream inventory assessment, detailed material input data from the Morrow Point Dam is used to estimate material inputs at 174 New England, and 4 Quebec, concrete hydroelectric projects. cGMP phosphodiesterase (PDE) is the central effector of visual transduction in retinal rod photoreceptors. The overall goal of this work was to investigate the possible regulatory mechanisms of PDE in mammalian rod photoreceptors by its noncatalytic cGMP binding sites on the PDE catalytic dimer (Palphabeta), and by the interactions between the inhibitory Pgamma subunit and Palphabeta in their phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated states.

First, the binding of cGMP to the noncatalytic sites on membrane-associated PDE (PDE-M) and soluble PDE (PDE-S) was characterized. We found that PDE-M holoenzyme contains 2 non-identical high-affinity cGMP binding sites; one of the cGMP binding sites is …

During the late 19th century and throughout the 20 th century, three waves of Serbian immigrants left the constant political flux of the Balkans to arrive in a constantly changing America. This dissertation examines how the political changes in the mother country and in the United States influenced the self-identification of each wave of immigrants as Serbs, Yugoslavs and Americans. I draw upon oral histories of Serbian-American intellectuals, Serbian language newspapers in the United States, immigrant memoirs and literature, and secondary sources in both Serbian and English to document the construction and reconstruction of Serbian, Yugoslav and American identity.

This research assessed the relationships of dietary, sex, and biochemical factors to macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and macular pigment (MP) distribution in 108 adults. Dietary assessment tools were evaluated for their ability to predict MP status. Macular pigment was assessed at four foveal sites and one parafoveal site. An average composite macular pigment value (CMPV) was calculated based on the MPOD results. Group mean MPOD results from most to least central retinal locations, were 0.43 (SE +/- 0.017), 0.36 (SE +/- 0.013), 0.28 (SE +/- 0.012), and 0.13 (SE +/- 0.008), respectively. A Preliminary Assessment Of Tidal Flooding Along The New Hampshire Coast: Past, Present And Future, Larry G. Ward, Jamie R. Adams

This report presents the results of a preliminary study that examines several critical coastal issues for New Hampshire including sea level fluctuations (past, present and future), shoreline migrations, and tidal flooding. Included are: 1) an analysis of sea level changes over the Holocene and resulting shoreline migrations, 2) an assessment of low-lying areas with elevations below selected tidal flooding datums in coastal areas, and 3) an assessment of increases in low-lying areas that are potentially at risk to tidal flooding over the next century due to sea level rise.

A variety of stand-density measures have become popular in North America for diagnosing thinning needs, predicting thinning outcomes, and to an increasing degree, regulating legal harvesting behavior. The statistical reliability of these measures is seldom included in the analysis, but the confidence limits of the measures must be considered if they are used in these ways.  These indices are designed to measure average stocking, but conventional approaches do not address issues of stand heterogeneity.  If the variability of the sample estimates is calculated in order to determine statistical reliability, it is then tempting to use that variability to address two …

. In recent years, increasing scientific attention has been paid to sea mammals as biological indicators of Arctic environmental change. The usefulness of animals such as ringed seal (Phoca hispida), harp seal (Phoca groenlandica), bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), and harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) as indicator species is due to the close relationship of their range, reproductive cycles, and life histories to sea ice. The behaviour and distribution of these species correlate with ice conditions in the areas where the animals are encountered. The proportions of seal species represented in archaeological deposits may therefore reflect, at least in part, environmental conditions …

It is generally accepted that crustaceans detect, and respond to, changes in water temperature, yet few studies have directly addressed their thermosensitivity. In this investigation a cardiac assay was used as an indicator that lobsters (Homarus americanus) sensed a change in temperature. The typical cardiac response of lobsters to a 1-min application of a thermal stimulus, either warmer (n = 19) or colder (n = 17) than the holding temperature of 15 degrees C, consisted of a short bradycardia (39.5 +/- 8.0 s) followed by a prolonged tachycardia (188.2 +/- 10.7 s). Fish Cage Physical Scale Modeling, Michael J. Palczynski

Scale model tests were completed in the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Wave/Tow tank to determine the movements and forces on two different fish cage models. The results of the testing were used to validate a finite element analysis and also were scaled up to that of a full sized, deployed fish cage used for aquaculture purposes.

The first model was a “skeleton” cage (without nets) rectangular in shape. This model was moored submerged in front of a viewing window and subjected to various regular waves. The motions were then recorded nonintrusively by means of an optical system acting through …
