Sampling Daphnia's Expressed Genes: Preservation, Expansion And Invention Of Crustacean Genes With Reference To Insect Genomes, John K. Colbourne, Brian D. Eads, Joseph Shaw, Elizabeth Bohuski, Darren J. Bauer, Justen Andrews
Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)
Background
Functional and comparative studies of insect genomes have shed light on the complement of genes, which in part, account for shared morphologies, developmental programs and life-histories. Contrasting the gene inventories of insects to those of the nematodes provides insight into the genomic changes responsible for their diversification. However, nematodes have weak relationships to insects, as each belongs to separate animal phyla. A better outgroup to distinguish lineage specific novelties would include other members of Arthropoda. For example, crustaceans are close allies to the insects (together forming Pancrustacea) and their fascinating aquatic lifestyle provides an important comparison for understanding the …

Pleasant Point Sewer Extension, City Of Portsmouth
PREP Reports & Publications
The City of Portsmouth (City) is located in Rockingham County at the mouth of the Piscataqua River in the seacoast area of New Hampshire. The City of Portsmouth’s sewerage system consists of approximately 115 miles of sewers (excluding the Pease International Tradeport), 19 pumping stations, and a 4.8 million gallon per day (mgd) primary wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) located on Peirce Island. The City has an inter-municipal agreement with the Town of New Castle, an island to the northeast of Portsmouth, to treat their wastewater at the City’s Peirce Island WWTF. Additionally, the City has entered into a long-term Municipal …

The importance of restoring filter-feeders, such as the Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica, to mitigate the effects of eutrophication (e.g. in Chesapeake Bay) is currently under debate. The argument that bivalve molluscs alone cannot control phytoplankton blooms and reduce hypoxia oversimplifies a more complex issue, namely that ecosystem engineering species make manifold contributions to ecosystem services. Although further discussion and research leading to a more complete understanding is required, oysters and other molluscs (e.g. mussels) in estuarine ecosystems provide services far beyond the mere top-down control of phytoplankton blooms, such as (1) seston filtration, (2) benthic–pelagic coupling, (3) creation of refugia …

Open spaces – forests, fields, wetlands, floodplains, salt marshes, rivers and streams – are integral to our community. These lands and waters that thread through our neighborhoods are a scenic reminder of our history, when people made their living by working the land. Yet we still depend on these open spaces for our health and our wellbeing. These places provide many “services” such as clean air, flood control, filtering pollutants and purifying drinking water, natural pest control, plant pollination, cooler summer temperatures, and areas for relaxing, exercising and recreating. Collectively these can be thought of as a “natural services network” …

The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Estuary Program which is a joint local/state/federal program established under the Clean Water Act with the goal of protecting and enhancing nationally significant estuaries. The NHEP’s Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (Management Plan)for New Hampshire’s estuaries was completed in 2000 and updated in 2005. The Management Plan outlines key issues related to management of New Hampshire’s estuaries and proposes strategies (Action Plans) to protect, enhance, and monitor the state’s estuarine resources. Local stakeholders established the NHEP’s priorities, which include water quality improvements, shellfish resource enhancements, …

U.S. Patent Literature Survey Of Agrobacterium-Mediated Transformation Of Sweet Potato (Ipomoea Batatas), Jon R. Cavicchi, Stanley P. Kowalski, J. Jaya Murthy, Rahul R. Vartak
Law Faculty Scholarship
A team of researchers and patent information scientists at Franklin Pierce Law Center were asked to evaluate the patent and literature landscape related to the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation in sweet potato with respect to the U.S. patents and patent applications. This report provides a patent landscape of the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of sweet potato. The report includes the applicable methods of transformation and has also included certain patents and patent applications which claim a transformed plant by virtue of these methods. In certain cases, the claim structure covers Agrobacterium-mediated transformation technology via system and composition of matter claims and not the more …

Leaching Properties Of Estuarine Harbor Sediment Before And After Electrodialytic Remediation, Kevin H. Gardner, Gunvor M. Nystroem, Deana A. Aulisio
Civil & Environmental Engineering
Electrodialytic remediation (EDR) can be used to extract heavy metals from a variety of different media. In this work, contaminated harbor sediments from two locations in the United States and one in Norway were subjected to EDR, and were compared with batch extractions conducted with the sediment. pH-dependent leaching tests were used to evaluate changes in leaching properties of treated and control sediments. Significant fractions of total concentrations were removed during treatment (35–95% with an average of 75% for all sediments and elements investigated). The release of elements in pH-dependent leaching tests, however, demonstrated equal or greater leaching from treated …
Clustering Acoustic Backscatter In The Angular Response Space, Luciano E. Fonseca, Brian R. Calder
Clustering Acoustic Backscatter In The Angular Response Space, Luciano E. Fonseca, Brian R. Calder
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Backscatter mosaicking is a necessary step in the analysis and interpretation of sidescan and multibeam sonar records. However, due to limitations intrinsic to the mosaicking technique, backscatter mosaics are restricted in their capacity to unambiguously discriminate seafloor properties. A more adequate technique to characterize the seafloor is the analysis of backscatter angular responses, since those responses are intrinsic properties of the seafloor. This technique sometimes lacks spatial resolution, however, as the analysis is limited to the swath width of the sonar. In this paper, we propose an approach to combine mosaicking and angular response analysis techniques in an attempt to …

The CAF1 protein is a component of the CCR4 - NOT deadenylase complex. While yeast CAF1 displays deadenylase activity, this activity is not required for its deadenylation function in vivo, and CCR4 is the primary deadenylase in the complex. In order to identify CAF1- specific functional regions required for deadenylation in vivo, we targeted for mutagenesis six regions of CAF1 that are specifically conserved among CAF1 orthologs. Defects in residues 213 - 215, found to be a site required for binding CCR4, reduced the rate of deadenylation to a lesser extent and resulted in in vivo phenotypes that were less …

The Squamscott River has had extended episodes of low dissolved oxygen (DO) that have been recorded at a site near its mouth over the past few years. These episodes were recorded as a result of temporally intensive monitoring by a datasonde, whereas data for the rest of the river has been spotty. Thus, the spatial extent of low DO episodes is not known. This study was designed to better characterize the spatial extent of DO conditions along the full length of the river, as well as to determine nutrient and other water quality parameters along the transect to help understand …
