I Progress Towards The Synthesis Of Plakortether B Through A Zinc-Mediated Homologation Ii Synthesis Of Novel Hydroxy-Cyclopropyl Peptides Isosteres, Ian Scott Taschner
I Progress Towards The Synthesis Of Plakortether B Through A Zinc-Mediated Homologation Ii Synthesis Of Novel Hydroxy-Cyclopropyl Peptides Isosteres, Ian Scott Taschner
Doctoral Dissertations
A streamlined synthetic pathway to target the core of plakortether B through a zinc-mediated homologation-aldol reaction has been developed. This chemistry was performed on a chiral beta-keto amide, which was synthesized in a few steps. In a one-pot reaction the beta-keto amide could be converted into a furanyl-ketal with high stereocontrol at two chiral centers. The homologation-aldol reaction was followed by a cyclization-allylation to obtain the plakortether backbone.
During the synthesis of plakortether B, a serendipitous byproduct was identified as a [3.1.0] bicyclic lactone. The lactone was seen as a precursor to a peptidomimetic that would contain an embedded hydroxycyclopropyl …
Independently Innovative: Teachers And Change In Successful Schools, Mary Halpin Carter
Independently Innovative: Teachers And Change In Successful Schools, Mary Halpin Carter
Doctoral Dissertations
This study explores teachers' perceptions of school change and leadership. The study is guided by the question: In an innovative independent school, how do teachers perceive deliberate change efforts and relate to the leaders who lead them. Other issues considered are the role of school culture, professional development and institutional goals in an effective change process. This research is distinctive in that it examines school change from the teachers' perspective and was conducted in a school that had previously demonstrated positive growth. The result is a qualitative, case study of one exemplary, independent school.

Examining The Relationship Between Social Capital And The Built Environment: A Case Study In Measuring Community Sustainability, Shannon H. Rogers
Examining The Relationship Between Social Capital And The Built Environment: A Case Study In Measuring Community Sustainability, Shannon H. Rogers
Doctoral Dissertations
The concepts of sustainability and sustainable development are frequently described as having three main components, sometimes referred to as the three pillars or the triple bottom line: environmental, economic, and social. Because the origins of sustainability come from a desire to right environmental wrongs much consideration has been given to the environmental issues, especially how they interface with economic ones. Frequently mentioned but rarely examined, the social aspects of sustainability have been considered the weakest and least described pillar. This work explores the utility of social capital, the value of one's networks and connections, as a measure of sustainability. As …
Satellite-Derived Fluorescence Quantum Yields As Indicators Of Phytoplankton Photophysiology, Deborah Goodwin
Satellite-Derived Fluorescence Quantum Yields As Indicators Of Phytoplankton Photophysiology, Deborah Goodwin
Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding and quantifying phytoplankton physiological variability is essential for analyses of biogeochemical cycling, climate change and ecosystem processes. Satellite measurements of chlorophyll indicate phytoplankton biomass but hold minimal direct information about the organisms' photosynthetic capabilities: however, remote sensing-derived fluorescence quantum yields have the potential for monitoring phytoplankton photophysiological states on a global scale. Recent research has demonstrated the effects of both nutrient stress and photoacclimation on fluorescence yield. Here, a novel satellite product comprising seven years of fluorescence quantum yields, derived from MODIS/Aqua normalized fluorescence line heights and corrected for pigment packaging effects, is evaluated and explored. Fluorescence yields are …
From Sweetwater To Seawater: An Environmental History Of Narragansett Bay, 1636--1849, Christopher L. Pastore
From Sweetwater To Seawater: An Environmental History Of Narragansett Bay, 1636--1849, Christopher L. Pastore
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines environmental change on and around Narragansett Bay from first European settlement in 1636 to the dissolution of the Blackstone Canal Company in 1849. It uses one of the largest estuaries on the East Coast and one situated at the heart of early English settlement in New England as a means to write estuaries into Atlantic history. Examining the ecological and epistemological complexities that arose at the nexus of land and sea, where improvable space and the push of "progress" met an eternal or "profound" ocean, this study reframes estuaries as watery borderlands that people used but never …
Detection Of Mortality In Tropical Forests Using Remote Sensing: From Treefall Gaps To Large Disturbances, Fernando Del Bon Espirito-Santo
Detection Of Mortality In Tropical Forests Using Remote Sensing: From Treefall Gaps To Large Disturbances, Fernando Del Bon Espirito-Santo
Doctoral Dissertations
The frequency, severity, and intensity of natural disturbances in tropical forests continually re-shape forest structure. At small scale, branch or tree-falls gaps and subsequent recovery are important mechanisms for carbon cycling. At landscape scale, large disturbances (blow-downs) may also play a role on the structure and composition of tropical forests. Quantitative studies of natural disturbances across the occurrence spectrum (branch fall-gaps to blow-downs) are rare for the Amazon. Remote sensing coupled with intense field work data collection provides the means to analyze the dynamic of tropical forests at multiple scales. In this dissertation three aspects of natural disturbances were examined: …
In-Situ Early Detection Of Metal Corrosion Via "Turn-On" Fluorescence In "Smart" Epoxy Coatings, Anita Augustyniak
In-Situ Early Detection Of Metal Corrosion Via "Turn-On" Fluorescence In "Smart" Epoxy Coatings, Anita Augustyniak
Doctoral Dissertations
Organic coatings (e.g., epoxy coatings) have been widely used to protect metal and metal alloys against corrosion. However protective coating fails with time, leading to corrosion of the metal substrate. When localized corrosion occurs, without being detected, it can result in disastrous failure of the metal structure. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a "smart" epoxy coating system that detects early stages of metal corrosion via indicators molecules embedded in the coating that fluoresce when triggered by ions liberated from corrosion. This fluorescence can be easily and non-destructively detected and thus further material damage can be prevented by …
A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study Of Two-Phase Flows In The Presence Of Surfactants, Yuanyuan Cui
A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study Of Two-Phase Flows In The Presence Of Surfactants, Yuanyuan Cui
Doctoral Dissertations
Drop formation in co-flowing fluids and drops rising in a tube are important in applications such as microencapsulation and enhanced oil recovery. A hybrid volume-of-fluid method with a front-tracking scheme is developed to study two-phase flows in the presence of surfactants at finite Reynolds numbers. Both fluids can be Newtonian or shear-thinning, and surfactants are soluble in the adsorption-desorption limit. A drop in the co-flowing geometry typically breaks up at the primary neck. The drop breaks faster with smaller volumes as the outer flow rate increases or the drop viscosity decreases. When surfactants are present, they accumulate in the neck …
Character Displacement In Burkholderia Biofilm Communities And The Effect Of Adaptive History On The Evolution Of Niche Breadth, Crystal Nicole Ellis
Character Displacement In Burkholderia Biofilm Communities And The Effect Of Adaptive History On The Evolution Of Niche Breadth, Crystal Nicole Ellis
Doctoral Dissertations
Ecologists agree that biodiversity is essential for maintaining highly productive and stable ecosystems, yet the mechanisms that generate and preserve diversity are unknown in many habitats. Competition for shared resources may cause selection to favor niche specialization, which reduces competition and reinforces diversity. If the environment is significantly altered, the ecological history of the remaining colonizer may influence fitness and capacity for diversification in new environments. In many cases, specialists have limited adaptive potential due to trade-offs generated by niche-specific adaptation; however, generalists may be adaptable in many habitats, which would make them good pioneer species for colonization. We investigated …
Unraveling The Mystery Of Leaf Reddening In Seagrasses, Alyssa B. Novak
Unraveling The Mystery Of Leaf Reddening In Seagrasses, Alyssa B. Novak
Doctoral Dissertations
Seagrass meadows around the world are declining due to natural and anthropogenic stressors, including global climate change. Recently, more attention has been given to identifying responses that offer resistance to stressors so that researchers can better manage seagrasses for resilience to environmental change. Leaf reddening, the expression of red coloration in leaves, is a well-documented response in terrestrial plants that has been shown to increase resilience to stress, but has been poorly understood in seagrasses. To increase our understanding of the prevalence, causes, and function of leaf in seagrasses, surveys were conducted in the world's six seagrass bioregions and a …
Study Of The Rate And Spectrum Of Spontaneous Mutations, Way Sung
Study Of The Rate And Spectrum Of Spontaneous Mutations, Way Sung
Doctoral Dissertations
Mutations are the initial force responsible for all aspects of genetic variation, and are a central part to evolution in all organisms. Yet despite its importance, the previously high cost that is associated with surveying mutations at a genome-wide scale has limited the understanding of the mutation process in eukaryotes. However, recent high-throughput sequencing technology has greatly reduced the cost of surveying mutations. By applying high-throughput sequencing to mutation accumulation experiments, we have begun to characterize the genome-wide mutation spectrum of eukaryotes.
Across all eukaryotes, we observe a biased rate of G/C-> A/T mutations that exceeds the number of A/T- …
The Implications Of Socioeconomic Status And A Usual Source Of Care For The Health And Health Care Experiences Of Elders With Chronic Illnesses, Michelle L. Stransky
The Implications Of Socioeconomic Status And A Usual Source Of Care For The Health And Health Care Experiences Of Elders With Chronic Illnesses, Michelle L. Stransky
Doctoral Dissertations
Recently developed models of health care provision have promoted the relationship between providers and patient for improving care continuity and coordination. This may be especially important for the growing population of elders, who often have fragmented care because of multiple chronic illnesses. Previous research shows that elders who have a usual source of care (USC) have better health and health care experiences than other elders. However, research has rarely considered whether the benefits of USCs may be affected by the elder's socioeconomic status (SES), their levels of chronic illness, or various provider characteristics.
This dissertation utilizes the 2007 Medicare Current …
I The Synthesis Of Papyracillic Acids: Application Of The Tandem Chain Extension-Acylation Reaction Ii Diastereoselective Synthesis Of Beta-Methyl-Gamma-Keto Esters Through The Utility Of An L-Serine Auxiliary, Jennifer R. Mazzone
Doctoral Dissertations
The development of the zinc-mediated tandem chain extension-acylation reaction for the synthesis of spiro-fused ketals was successfully accomplished. The incorporation of a methyl-substituent into the gamma-keto ester backbone, through a methyl substituted carbenoid, allowed for the synthesis of papyracillic acid B and 4-epi-papyracillic acid C. Comparison between the reported and experimental spectral data for papyracillic acid B and 4- epi-papyracillic acid C permitted structural and stereochemical reassignment.
Diastereoselective syntheses of beta-methyl-gamma-keto esters were achieved through the utility of an L-serine auxiliary. Preparation of a series of L-serine derived precursors were prepared and studied.
Artifact-Based Reflective Interviews For Identifying Pragmatic Epistemological Resources, Christopher Walden Shubert
Artifact-Based Reflective Interviews For Identifying Pragmatic Epistemological Resources, Christopher Walden Shubert
Doctoral Dissertations
Physics Education Research studies the science of teaching and learning physics. The process of student learning is complex, and the factors that affect it are numerous. Describing students' understanding of physics knowledge and reasoning is the basis for much productive research; however, such research fails to account for certain types of student learning difficulties. In this dissertation, I explore one source of student difficulty: personal epistemology, students' ideas about knowledge and knowing.
Epistemology traditionally answers three questions: What is knowledge? How is knowledge created? And, how do we know what we know? An individual's responses to these questions can affect …

High Lundquist Number Simulations Of Parker's Model Of Coronal Heating: Scaling And Current Sheet Statistics Using Heterogeneous Computing Architectures, Liwei Lin
Doctoral Dissertations
Parker's model [Parker, Astrophys. J., 174, 499 (1972)] is one of the most discussed mechanisms for coronal heating and has generated much debate. We have recently obtained new scaling results for a 2D version of this problem suggesting that the heating rate becomes independent of resistivity in a statistical steady state [Ng and Bhattacharjee, Astrophys. J., 675, 899 (2008)]. Our numerical work has now been extended to 3D using high resolution MHD numerical simulations. Random photospheric footpoint motion is applied for a time much longer than the correlation time of the motion to obtain converged average coronal heating rates. Simulations …
An Exploratory Approach To Social Impact Assessment Of Public Policy Decisions: Multiple Stakeholders Perspectives On The Social Impact Of Overfishing In New England Groundfisheries In The 1990s, Fabienne Lord
Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis seeks to understand how stakeholders' perspectives and understanding of social impacts influence decision processes. Understanding stakeholders' comprehension of social impacts provides insight as to how they weigh these impacts against others when making decisions. Moreover, the way stakeholders influence, or are influenced by, management decisions provides information on the use and development of methodologies successful in assessing social impacts and communicating the results. Built on this information, the main objective is to explore and develop a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) approach that could capture and integrate multiple stakeholders' perspectives in predicting impacts from ongoing, renewable resource management actions. …

The Foster Parent Experience Of Attachment, Taylor Cohen
Master's Theses and Capstones
This study explores the attachment experience of foster parents. The researcher used a qualitative research framework to explore what 10 foster parents experienced in regards to attachment with their foster children. Based on the data and content analysis, a foster parent ecology emerged showing that the foster parent/child attachment relationship is affected by doctors, therapists, social workers, case workers, other foster parents, and the biological parents. The temporary nature of foster care and the goal of reunification of child to biological parent also affected the attachment relationship between foster parent and foster child.

Incidence, Abundance, Post-Harvest Processing And Population Diversity Of Pathogenic Vibrios In Oysters From The Great Bay Estuary, Jong Whan Yu
Master's Theses and Capstones
Shellfish-borne vibrio diseases have increased recently in the US, particularly in cooler, northern areas. Harvest area monitoring and post-harvest processing (PHP) have been implemented to reduce Vibrio disease risks in marketed shellfish, and rapid and reliable detection methods are needed to assess these risks. Both culture based and qPCR detection methods were useful for detecting V. parahaemolyticus (Vp) in oysters. QPCR is more rapid and less subjective, while the culture based method allowed detection of lower Vp concentrations in cold-water oysters where the Vp population diversity was more clonal. Depuration and relaying were assessed as PHP strategies for reducing Vp …
