Education

Despite increases over the last two decades in the number of degrees awarded to students from underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, enhancing diversity in these disciplines remains a challenge. This article describes a strategic approach to this challenge—the development of a collaborative partnership between two universities: the historically Black Elizabeth City State University and the historically White University of New Hampshire. The partnership, a type of learning organization built on three mutually agreed upon principles, strives to enhance opportunities for underrepresented students to pursue careers in the STEM disciplines. This article further describes six promising …

Using Individual And Group Multiple-Choice Quizzes To Deepen Students' Learning, Sophie M. Sparrow Jan 2011

Using Individual And Group Multiple-Choice Quizzes To Deepen Students' Learning, Sophie M. Sparrow

Law Faculty Scholarship

For years, I was highly skeptical about using multiple-choice questions to assess law students' learning.' Clients, after all, do not ask lawyers to solve multiple-choice problems. I have realized, however, that multiple-choice quizzes can be a highly effective technique to include in any doctrinal class. Well-designed multiple-choice quizzes can help students in any size class learn foundational doctrine, provide feedback to teachers and students, develop students' interpersonal skills, and prepare students for the bar exam. Having used multiple-choice quizzes in first year and upper-level courses for several years, I now value multiple-choice quizzes as an effective first step in preparing …

Bioaccumulation Of Microcystins By Freshwater Mussels In Mystic Lake And Middle Pond, Ma, Breanna Travers, Amanda Murby, James F. Haney Jan 2011

Bioaccumulation Of Microcystins By Freshwater Mussels In Mystic Lake And Middle Pond, Ma, Breanna Travers, Amanda Murby, James F. Haney

Center for Freshwater Biology

The UNH Center for Freshwater Biology investigated a possible relationship between a cyanobacteria bloom and a large-scale die-off of freshwater mussels in Mystic Lake and Middle Pond (Barnstable, MA). Four mussel species, Elliptio complanata (Eastern Elliptio), Pyganodon cataracta (Eastern Floater), Leptodea ochracea (Tidewater Mucket), and Lampsilis radiata (Eastern Lampmussel) (Nedeau, 2008), along with water samples, were collected from these lakes on August 9, 2010 (during bloom) and again on September 29 and October 8, 2010 (post-bloom). Hepatopancreas tissue, foot tissue, and water samples were tested for the cyanobacteria toxins, microcystins (MC), using ELISA techniques. MC concentrations in the hepatopancreas were …

Biological Effects Of Dispersants And Dispersed Oil In Surface And Deep Ocean Species, Ronald Tjeerdema, Adriana C. Bejarano, Sara Edge Jan 2011

Biological Effects Of Dispersants And Dispersed Oil In Surface And Deep Ocean Species, Ronald Tjeerdema, Adriana C. Bejarano, Sara Edge

Coastal Response Research Center

Beginning with the use of industrial-strength detergents, dispersing agents have been employed in spill response for decades. The Corexit series of agents in common use today generally consist of non-ionic and/or anionic surfactants in a solvent base designed to enhance miscibility under varying temperature and salinity conditions; cationic surfactants tend to be too toxic for use. While dispersants generally serve to decrease the interfacial surface tension of oil, thus facilitating its weathering under low-energy conditions, their surface-active nature also causes their interaction with cell surfaces – those of single-celled organisms as well as the gills of vertebrates and invertebrates.

Invasion Of A Littoral Cladoceran Sida Crystallina Into The Pelagic Zone Of Christine Lake, Nh And Its Potential Impact On The Phytoplankton Community, Kayla N. Huey

Center for Freshwater Biology

This study evaluated the phytoplankton community and grazing influences of the zooplankton in oligotrophic Christine Lake, NH, by assessing the body size and clearance rates of the three dominant crustaceans: Sida crystallina (0.08 individuals L-1 ), Daphnia dubia (0.11 individuals L-1 ), and Leptodiaptomus sicilis (2.11 individuals L-1 ). Sida crystallina, typically a littoral cladoceran, was abundant throughout the water column in the open water, and contributed approximately 44% of the grazing in the pelagic zone. Phytoplankton abundance was examined to assess the potential impact S. crystallina might have on the phytoplankton in Christine lake. Aphanocapsa, the dominant phytoplankton in …

Dispersant Efficacy And Effectiveness, Thomas Coolbaugh, Amy Mcelroy Jan 2011

Dispersant Efficacy And Effectiveness, Thomas Coolbaugh, Amy Mcelroy

Coastal Response Research Center

Dispersants have been researched extensively and used for oil spill mitigation for more than 40 years, yet there are opportunities to enhance our understanding, including with respect to their long term fate and effects and how to optimize dispersant use. For example, the 2005 National Academy of Sciences report, Understanding Oil Spill Dispersants: Efficacy and Effects, suggested a number of areas where increased understanding would help support the use of dispersants. Throughout the summer of 2010 dispersants were used in unprecedented quantities and, in the case of sub-sea application, with novel application methods following the Deepwater Horizon incident. The focus …

"The Alien Within": Residual Catholicism And The Emerging National Identity Of Post-Reformation England, Melissa K. Siik (Femino) Jan 2011

"The Alien Within": Residual Catholicism And The Emerging National Identity Of Post-Reformation England, Melissa K. Siik (Femino)

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation contributes to the current critical discourse in Early Modern English Studies on the conceptions and literary representations of national and racial identity in 16th- and 17th-century England. Central to this discourse is an examination of how the English defined themselves in relation to those they deemed as "others": the foreign and marginalized members of society. My study is unique because I look at individual figures of "otherness"---the Irishman, the Turk, and the Jew---in light of their common characteristic: their shared significance as coded figures of Catholicism. Ultimately, my dissertation unifies disparate conversations about race, religion, and politics in …

Existing Regulatory Circuitries Govern Backbone And Acquired Host Association Factors In The Human Pathogen Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, Jennifer C. Mahoney Jan 2011

Existing Regulatory Circuitries Govern Backbone And Acquired Host Association Factors In The Human Pathogen Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, Jennifer C. Mahoney

Doctoral Dissertations

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a poorly characterized human gastrointestinal pathogen whose virulence mechanisms are not well understood. Though closely related to Vibrio cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus infections are inflammatory and utilize virulence traits that are unique from the Cholera toxins yet remain poorly characterized. Vibrio spp. in general share an extensive core genome dedicated to environmental survival and unique, often horizontally acquired, gene content that is reserved for species specific lifestyles. This diversity has resulted in a genus of highly specialized bacteria partaking in dramatically different lifestyles ranging from symbiosis to pathogenesis. We propose that a comparative genomic and transcriptomic analysis of …

"If We Want An Education, We Want An Education It's Our Choice": How Four Youth At Risk Of Dropping Out Of High School Experienced Social Capital, Joanne Mcfarland Malloy Jan 2011

"If We Want An Education, We Want An Education It's Our Choice": How Four Youth At Risk Of Dropping Out Of High School Experienced Social Capital, Joanne Mcfarland Malloy

Doctoral Dissertations

Youth who are at risk of dropping out of high school are often challenged by significant emotional and behavioral support needs, and are typically disengaged from the educational process and the social networks that can help them succeed in their homes, in school, and in their communities. This research project investigated the experiences of four youth, two females and two males, who were at significant risk of dropping out of high school as they were engaged in a supportive intervention designed to build skills in self-determination, school-to-adult life transition planning, and leveraging social resources. Using social capital as a sensitizing …

Identifying Novel Proteins In Translation Complex By Using Analytical Ultracentrifugation With Fluorescent Detection System, Chongxu Zhang Jan 2011

Identifying Novel Proteins In Translation Complex By Using Analytical Ultracentrifugation With Fluorescent Detection System, Chongxu Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

The primary components of the translation initiation complex have been identified by a variety of techniques. However, it is likely that all components of the translation initiation complex are still not fully discovered. Identifying new components should lead to a better understanding of the translation process and how it is regulated. Using mass spectrometric studies, we have identified 41 non-ribosomal proteins and non-translation initiation factors as possible components of the translation initiation complex. To determine which of these proteins are in the translation complex, we applied analytical ultracentrifugation with fluorescent detection system (AU-FDS) to detect this complex. Following a one-step …

Raping The Raced Body: Trauma In Asian North American Women's Literature, Amy Lillian Manning Jan 2011

Raping The Raced Body: Trauma In Asian North American Women's Literature, Amy Lillian Manning

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the representation of racial and sexual traumas in short fiction and novels by Asian American women writing post-WWII to the present. The central focus of this project is on Asian American literary representations of the lingering effects of physical, racial, and sexual traumas to Asian American women, specifically the nuances of narrating traumatic experiences. Each chapter explores various literary representations of post-traumatic psychological states of unrest, instability, and incoherence. Most importantly, this study examines the frequently simultaneous narrations of sexual trauma and racial awareness, of how personal narratives of trauma against the physical body become entangled with …

The Effect Of Culture And Self-Construal On Memory Development: Mother-Child Conversations In Eastern Turkey, Western Turkey And The United States, Basak Sahin Jan 2011

The Effect Of Culture And Self-Construal On Memory Development: Mother-Child Conversations In Eastern Turkey, Western Turkey And The United States, Basak Sahin

Doctoral Dissertations

Eighty-seven mothers and their four-year-old children from Eastern Turkey (N = 32 mother-child pairs), Western Turkey (N =30 mother child pairs) and the United States (N = 25 mother-child pairs) participated in a study of mother-child memory talk, self-construal and parenting goals. Mother-child pairs were audio-recorded while drawing pictures and talking about shared past and anticipated future events. Mothers completed Balanced Integration-Differentiation questionnaires and were scored as high or low on individuation and relatedness orientations. They completed child rearing goals questionnaires that were scored for conformity, self-maximization and power factors. Memory and future talk differed across culture and self-construal groups. …

The Deconstruction Of Ambition: Campus Climate, Stereotype Threat, And The Motivational Goals Of African American Students At A Selective Small Liberal Arts College, Roland S. Davis Jan 2011

The Deconstruction Of Ambition: Campus Climate, Stereotype Threat, And The Motivational Goals Of African American Students At A Selective Small Liberal Arts College, Roland S. Davis

Doctoral Dissertations

African American students face many challenges when they attend highly selective, predominantly White institutions. Lack of support for or belief in their academic success on the part of White faculty and peers may contribute to a climate in which it becomes increasingly difficult for African American students to be motivated and believe in their ability to excel academically. Studies suggest that an unsupportive racial climate on campus perpetuates "stereotype threat"---the conception that task performance can be affected by a fear of being evaluated on the basis of, or inadvertently perpetuating a stereotype about one's racial group, and a decade of …

Seasonal, Biogeochemical, And Microbial Response Of Soils To Simultaneous Warming And Nitrogen Additions, Alexandra R. Contosta Jan 2011

Seasonal, Biogeochemical, And Microbial Response Of Soils To Simultaneous Warming And Nitrogen Additions, Alexandra R. Contosta

Doctoral Dissertations

Climate warming and nitrogen deposition are global environmental threats that could alter soil microbial communities and the biogeochemical processes they perform. Few studies have examined interactive effects of elevated temperatures and nitrogen inputs. Many studies have also not considered the role that season plays in mediating the response of soils to warming and nitrogen. Finally, most research has not linked changes in the soil microbial community with ecosystem-scale dynamics. One objective of this dissertation was to examine season-specific microbial and biogeochemical responses to simultaneous warming and nitrogen additions. Another aim was to investigate whether warming and nitrogen can restructure microbial …
