Contrasted Evolutionary Constraints On Secreted And Non-Secreted Proteomes Of Selected Actinobacteria, Subarna Thakur, Philippe Normand, Vincent Daubin, Louis S. Tisa, Arnab Sen

Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences

Background: Actinobacteria have adapted to contrasted ecological niches such as the soil, and among others to plants or animals as pathogens or symbionts. Mycobacterium genus contains mostly pathogens that cause a variety of mammalian diseases, among which the well-known leprosy and tuberculosis, it also has saprophytic relatives. Streptomyces genus is mostly a soil microbe known for its secondary metabolites, it contains also plant pathogens, animal pathogens and symbionts. Frankia, a nitrogen-fixing actinobacterium establishes a root symbiosis with dicotyledonous pionneer plants. Pathogens and symbionts live inside eukaryotic cells and tissues and interact with their cellular environment through secreted proteins and effectors …

Oyster Bed Mapping In The Great Bay Estuary, 2012-2013, Raymond E. Grizzle, Krystin M. Ward

PREP Reports & Publications

Six major oyster beds (reefs) in New Hampshire are mapped periodically to assess wild oyster populations in the Great Bay Estuary. Data on the spatial extent of the beds are combined with density and other measures to estimate the abundances of live oysters. The first objective of the present project was to determine the spatial extent of these six oyster beds, and to compare the 2012/2013 data with previous mapping efforts. A second objective was twofold: to map the extent of live oyster bottom at selected recent oyster restoration sites, and to map areas where oyster beds have been known …

An Imaging Neutron/Gamma-Ray Spectrometer, Amanda C. Madden, Peter F. Bloser, Dominique Fourguette, Liane Larocque, Matt Lewis, Jason S. Legere, Mark L. Mcconnell, Marissa Rouseau, James M. Ryan May 2013

An Imaging Neutron/Gamma-Ray Spectrometer, Amanda C. Madden, Peter F. Bloser, Dominique Fourguette, Liane Larocque, Matt Lewis, Jason S. Legere, Mark L. Mcconnell, Marissa Rouseau, James M. Ryan

Space Science Center

We present the test results of a neutron/gamma-ray imaging spectrometer for the identification and location of radioactive and special nuclear materials. Radioactive materials that could be fashioned into a radiation dispersal device typically emit gamma rays, while fissile materials such as uranium and plutonium emit both neutrons and gamma rays via spontaneous or induced fission. The simultaneous detection of neutrons and gamma rays is a clear indication of the presence of fissile material. The instrument works as a double-scatter telescope, requiring a neutron or gamma ray to undergo an interaction in two detectors to be considered a valid event. While …

Expression Of Three Gnrh Receptors In Specific Tissues In Male And Female Sea Lampreys Petromyzon Marinus At Three Distinct Life Stages, Jeffrey A. Hall, Wayne A. Decatur, Dana M. Daukss, Mary K. Hayes

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

Two recently cloned gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptors (lamprey GnRH-R-2 and lamprey GnRH-R-3) along with lamprey (l) GnRH-R-1 were shown to share similar structural features and amino acid motifs common to other vertebrate receptors. Here we report on our findings of RNA expression of these three GnRH receptors in the three major life stages (larval, parasitic, and adult phases) of the sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus, a basal vertebrate. For each stage, we examined the expression of messenger RNA encoding the receptors in the brain, pituitary, gonad, heart, muscle, liver, eye, intestine, kidney, skin, thyroid, gill, and endostyle by RT-PCR. In adult …

History Of Nutrient Inputs To The Northeastern United States, 1930–2000, Rebecca L. Hale, Joseph H. Hoover, Wilfred M. Wollheim, Charles J. Vorosmarty

Faculty Publications

Humans have dramatically altered nutrient cycles at local to global scales. We examined changes in anthropogenic nutrient inputs to the northeastern United States (NE) from 1930 to 2000. We created a comprehensive time series of anthropogenic N and P inputs to 437 counties in the NE at 5 year intervals. Inputs included atmospheric N deposition, biological N2 fixation, fertilizer, detergent P, livestock feed, and human food. Exports included exports of feed and food and volatilization of ammonia. N inputs to the NE increased throughout the study period, primarily due to increases in atmospheric deposition and fertilizer. P inputs increased until …

Mechanisms Of Nutrient Limitation And Nutrient Acquisition In Managed And Unmanaged Forest Ecosystems, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur May 2013

Mechanisms Of Nutrient Limitation And Nutrient Acquisition In Managed And Unmanaged Forest Ecosystems, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur

Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding the interactions between global change, human and natural disturbances, and other factors on biogeochemical processes in forests is necessary to ensure the sustainability of forest management. Here I report the results of several investigations into nutrient acquisition processes in the forests of New Hampshire. I begin with a meta-analysis of fertilization studies showing that phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) as well as nitrogen (N) may limit primary production in deciduous forests of the region. Because these limiting nutrients are all removed from the ecosystem when trees are harvested, I compared nutrient budgets under a range of harvesting scenarios with …

Physics & Astronomy

[1] The Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER) instrument aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has been measuring energetic charged particles from the galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar particle events in lunar orbit since 2009. CRaTER includes three pairs of silicon detectors, separated by pieces of tissue-equivalent plastic that shield two of the three pairs from particles incident at the zenith-facing end of the telescope. Heavy-ion beams studied in previous ground-based work have been shown to be reasonable proxies for the GCRs when their energies are sufficiently high. That work, which included GCR simulations, led to predictions …

Grandma's "Pill", Whitney Mills May 2013

Grandma's "Pill", Whitney Mills

Perspectives

This is a qualitative study that explores the experiences of women and the creation of the birth control pill. The study results from interviews with three women over the age of sixty-five, all of which were of reproductive age during the unveiling of the contraceptive pill in the United States. Results from the study suggest that the creation of the pill was an empowering historical event for womanhood in the United States. This paper explores the multifaceted freedom that the pill brought to women during the mid to late 20th century, and also suggests that the introduction of the contraceptive …
