Macroalgal Monitoring In The Great Bay Estuary: 2018 Annual Report, David M. Burdick, Gregg E. Moore, Arthur C. Mathieson, Andrew Payne, Chris Peter

Since 2013, the abundance and taxa of intertidal macroalgae have been assessed at fixed locations throughout the Great Bay Estuary in New Hampshire. Algal abundance may be influenced by environmental conditions such as nutrient levels, water temperature, light and invasive species. Therefore, abundance of different algal groups can provide insights into the overall health of the estuary and signal ecological change. In 2018, intertidal abundance data for percentage cover and biomass were collected, as planned, from five of the eight sites. For the first time, subtidal sampling arrays were also incorporated at all four sites in Great Bay proper to …

Between August and October 2018, E/V Nautilus moved from the west coast of North America to the Hawaiian Islands, with expeditions to Lō‘ihi Seamount and the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. The transit across the North Pacific Ocean provided the opportunity to fill in gaps in seabed mapping coverage, add data for the US Extended Continental Shelf (ECS) Project, and map the lava ocean entry sites from the 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano. Nautilus also completed targeted mapping of seamounts and mapped a section of the Area of Particular Environmental Interest One (APEI-1) in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCFZ) designated …

“Walking With The Ancients” In The Southern California Continental Borderland, Robert D. Ballard, Larry A. Mayer, Kenneth Broad, Dwight F. Coleman, Erin Heffron, Val Schmidt

“Walking with the Ancients” was the fifth in a series of E/V Nautilus expeditions to the Channel Islands and the Southern California Continental Borderland that began in 2016. Cruise sponsors were NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, the Office of Naval Research, the National Geographic Society, and the Lounsbery Foundation. The primary focus of the five expeditions was to discover and investigate submerged caves carved by the sea since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) some 19,000 years ago. When the great continental ice sheets began to melt, sea level rose discontinuously, creating a series of paleoshorelines.

Chemical dispersants were employed on an unprecedented scale during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and could be a response option should a large spill occur in Arctic waters. The use of dispersants in response to that spill raised concerns regarding the need for chemical dispersants, the fate of the oil and dispersants, and their potential impacts on human health and the environment. Concerns remain that would be more evident in the Arctic, where the remoteness and harsh environmental conditions would make a response to any oil spill very difficult. An outcome of a 2013 Arctic …

Electron Attachment And Electron Ionization Of Formic Acid Clusters Embedded In Helium Nanodroplets, Masoomeh Mahmoodi-Darian, Linnea Lundberg, Samuel Zottl, Paul Scheier, Olof Echt

We report the results of an experimental study of electron ionization of large helium nanodroplets doped with formic acid (FA). Several homologous series of cluster anions are observed, including [FAn-H]−, undissociated FAn−, and these ions complexed with one or more H2O. Some major features resemble those observed upon sputtering of frozen FA films but they differ significantly from results obtained by electron attachment to bare FA clusters in the gas phase. The FAn− and (H2O)[FAn-H]− series show abrupt onsets above n = 2 and 5, respectively. A prominent resonance in the anion yield occurs at 22.5 eV due to the …

Mobilization of trace metals from soils to surface waters can impact both human and ecosystem health. This study resamples a water sample archive to explore the spatial pattern of streamwater total concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc and their associations with biogeochemical controls in northern New England. Road deicing appears to result in elevated trace metal concentrations, as trace metal concentrations are strongly related to sodium concentrations and are most elevated when the sodium: chloride ratio is near 1.0 (~halite). Our results are consistent with previous laboratory and field studies that indicate cation exchange as a metal mobilization …

This project was designed to better understand the roles of soil biota in 1 mediating native species-NIS interactions and 2 facilitating the recovery of degraded ecosystems.
