Law Faculty Scholarship
A worldwide pandemic is forcing schools to close their doors. Yet the need to teach students remains. How can faculty – especially those who are not trained in technology-mediated teaching – maintain educational continuity? This Essay provides some suggestions and relatively quick and easy strategies for distance education in this time of coronavirus. While it is written from the perspective of teaching law school, it can be applied to teaching other humanities such as philosophy, literature, religion, political theory, and other subjects that do not easily lend themselves to charts, graphs, figures, and diagrams. This Essay includes an introductory technology …

PREP Reports & Publications
As global warming increases temperature and nitrogen inputs change—either due to greater inputs associated with growing populations in the Great Bay or with nitrogen reductions at wastewater treatment plants—it is important to understand how these changes are impacting the estuary. To that end, the abundance and taxa of intertidal seaweeds have been assessed at fixed locations throughout the estuary since 2013. Seaweed abundance may be influenced by environmental conditions such as nutrient levels, water temperature, light availability, and invasive species. Therefore, seaweed communities can provide insights into the overall health of the estuary and signal ecological change. In 2019, abundance …

Behavioral Response To Multi-Channel Environmental Noise: Tracking Noise-Induced Changes In Daily Locomotor Patterns And Mate Attraction Strategies In Acheta Domesticus, Nicole Abate
Master's Theses and Capstones
Communication is essential in biotic systems, and signals represent information exchanged between a sender and receiver. Noise can interfere with the transmission, detection, and processing of signals, and can occur in any sensory channel. Noise can also disrupt behaviors related to foraging, predator detection and avoidance, and social interactions. Most research on the effects of noise on animal behavior has been focused on its effects on terrestrial avian species and marine mammals in an isomodal context, with data on invertebrates generally sparse. Many insects have highly adapted structures for sound and vibration detection, and thus make ideal models for studying …
Brain Networks Underlying Inhibition In Traumatic Brain Injury And In Autism Spectrum Disorders, Gwyneth Faith Peacock
Brain Networks Underlying Inhibition In Traumatic Brain Injury And In Autism Spectrum Disorders, Gwyneth Faith Peacock
Master's Theses and Capstones
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) are clinical populations with social cognition difficulties, exhibited by deficits in controlling impulsive or perseverative behaviors. These difficulties have been attributed to executive functioning (EF) impairments, particularly for inhibition. Thus, understanding the neural bases of inhibition is preliminary to understanding EF impairments in populations like ASD and TBI. A coordinate-based meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies was used to identify the neural basis of response inhibition in neurotypical adults to compare with TBI and ASD. Inclusion criteria for studies required reported foci for adults (17+ years of age), reported …

Distribution And Fate Of Per- And Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (Pfas) In Wastewater Treatment Plants Discharging To Great Bay, Elham Tavasoli
Master's Theses and Capstones
Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent a major class of emerging contaminants composed of nearly 5000 human-made chemicals. PFAS have been used since the 1950s as surfactants in industrial and consumer products due to their unique water and oil repellency, high surface activity, and thermostability. These compounds can bioaccumulate and pose human and ecological health concerns; for example, PFAS intensive exposure can affect the liver, reproduction and development in humans and wildlife. Ubiquitous presence of these compounds in different environmental matrices, high persistency, and potential threats to human and environmental health, have made it critical to develop an understanding of how …

Three experiments were conducted. The objective of Experiment 1 was 2-fold: 1) to evaluate the effect of storage of wet brewer’s grains (WBG) treated with salt or a commercial preservative (PRES) on yeast and mold growth and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and 2) to evaluate in situ dry matter (DM) and protein digestibility of WBG treated with salt and PRES. Seven treatments were used for objective 1: control (0%), PRES (0.05%, 0.10%, 0.15%); or salt (1.4%, …
Investigating The Spatial And Temporal Scale Variability Of Ebullitive Flux From A Subarctic Thaw Pond System, Sophia Burke
Investigating The Spatial And Temporal Scale Variability Of Ebullitive Flux From A Subarctic Thaw Pond System, Sophia Burke
Doctoral Dissertations
Arctic regions are experiencing more rapid warming than other parts of the world, leading to destabilization of carbon (C) that has been sequestered in permafrost, especially in peatlands where the C content of the peat is very high. More frequent incidence of thaw in permafrost peatlands is leading to the development of small thaw ponds that are known to be sources of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere, yet there is a lack in long-term studies of CH4 emission from these formations. This is of concern because CH4 has thirty-two times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide over a one-hundred-year …
Carbon And Nitrogen Dynamics In Fluvial Systems Across Biomes, Bianca Rodriguez-Cardona
Carbon And Nitrogen Dynamics In Fluvial Systems Across Biomes, Bianca Rodriguez-Cardona
Doctoral Dissertations
Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles are tightly coupled in ecosystems as many N transformations rely on carbon as the energy source. In aquatic ecosystems this coupling between C and N has been studied via assessment of dissolve organic carbon (DOC) and inorganic-N concentration or whole stream manipulations of C and/or N to determine the influence of C on N processing. However, the majority of these studies have been performed in temperate systems and whether these relationships hold across other biomes, like artic and tropics, is unclear. In addition, how the more N-rich organic matter or dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) …

Am I A Math Or Science Person? How High School Students’ Attitudes Towards Mathematics And Science Influence Their Decision To Major In Stem, Dalton Dayne Marsh
Doctoral Dissertations
Motivated by an innovation-driven economy, critical emphasis has been placed on the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce in the United States. Education has been charged to prepare a diverse population of young people qualified to take up these jobs and lead the nation into a rapidly evolving technological future. How to best approach this goal is still being negotiated. While past research and efforts focused largely on improving students’ achievement in mathematics and science, more recent research points to the need to also consider students’ attitudes towards STEM subjects. However, what types of attitudes (e.g., self-efficacy, identity, interest, …
Modeling And Assessing The Sustainability Of Dams In The United States, Cuihong Song
Modeling And Assessing The Sustainability Of Dams In The United States, Cuihong Song
Doctoral Dissertations
Dam decision-making is often controversial as a choice has to be made between the benefits provided by dams (e.g., recreation, water supply, hydropower) and their potential negative impacts (e.g., effects on natural flow regime, impediment for fish migration). However, our understandings of such tradeoffs under a full range of dam management alternatives remain limited which hinders our ability to make sound and scientifically defensible dam management decisions. The diverse stakeholders involved in the decision-making process with varying perspectives and preferences could further exacerbate the difficulty of decision-making. To advance our knowledge in sustainable dam decision-making, this dissertation developed modeling tools …
Responses Of Bats To White-Nose Syndrome And Implications For Conservation, Meghan Stark
Responses Of Bats To White-Nose Syndrome And Implications For Conservation, Meghan Stark
Doctoral Dissertations
The appearance and spread of emerging infectious diseases pose a significant threat to wildlife populations worldwide having resulted in declines far surpassing those in recorded history. White-nose syndrome (WNS), caused by Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), is currently one of the most pervasive wildlife diseases, with devastating impacts on several North American bat species. Since its initial detection in 2006, Pd has spread rapidly across North America and population declines at hibernating sites have been severe; however, mortality rates from WNS vary among species. While environmental conditions in hibernacula may be strong predictors of disease impacts on individual species, variation in susceptibility …
Glacial Troughs Eject Wind-Driven Shelf Circulation To The Slope, Patrick Hampson
Glacial Troughs Eject Wind-Driven Shelf Circulation To The Slope, Patrick Hampson
Master's Theses and Capstones
Glacial troughs are flat-bottomed, steep-sided submarine valleys, which almost or entirely
incise the shelf, that significantly alter coastal circulation. A barotropic, linear, steady-state
model is used to quantify this alteration as a function of shelf geometry. These model results
demonstrate that troughs eject most of the shelf transport offshore to the slope. This offshore
ejection diminishes wind-driven alongshore transport downwave of the trough; downwave is
the direction of long coastal trapped wave propagation.
Offshore ejection is caused by bottom friction dissipating relative vorticity. Troughs
enhance offshore ejection by generating relative vorticity. This is because linear flows on an
f-plane (used …
Efficient Comparative Genomics With Low Coverage Data Using Paladin, Rachel Cates
Efficient Comparative Genomics With Low Coverage Data Using Paladin, Rachel Cates
Master's Theses and Capstones
Comparative genomics focuses on comparing the catalog of genomic elements of whole genome sequences to determine the functional relationship between genes. One of the first steps in comparative analysis is to make genome assemblies for the organisms of interest. However, due to the cost and time required to create these assemblies, only a limited number of organisms can be analyzed simultaneously. A new software package, PALADIN, maps nucleotide reads in protein space using a modified version of the Burrows-Wheeler Aligner (BWA). We demonstrate that PALADIN can accurately and efficiently identify the proteins in a genome using inputs with significantly lower …
Examining Brain Network Modularity In U.S. Military Personnel With Blast Vs. Non-Blast Related Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Hannah Marie Franz
Examining Brain Network Modularity In U.S. Military Personnel With Blast Vs. Non-Blast Related Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Hannah Marie Franz
Master's Theses and Capstones
Problem: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major health concern to the public, accounting for alarming numbers of hospitalizations and emergency department visits per year. mTBI is of particular concern because of the injury’s ‘invisible’ nature. There are a lack of clinical findings on current evidence-based diagnostic protocols, and sufferers of this “silent” injury persistently complain of changes in functioning compared to their baseline abilities.
Methods: 103 active duty service members from the SCORE study comprised 3 groups: mTBI resulting from blast (bmTBI; n=32), mTBI not resulting from blast (e.g. falls, motor vehicle accidents) (mTBI; n=29), and orthopedic controls (OC; …

Goodbye And Thanks For All The Fish: The Inevitable Mass Extinction Of Vertebrate Wildlife In The United States By 2100 Ad, Richard Maximus Strahan
Master's Theses and Capstones
The last stages of a global mass extinction event (GME) that started in the Pleistocene is likely to be continuing across the nations of the Earth. In the United States (“Nation”), it will likely climax (“Climax”) by 2100 AD when it will wipe out about 80% of endemic, vertebrate wildlife species. It will reduce the populations and ranges of the Nation’s surviving vertebrate species to minimal values. This will be the 6th such mass extinction of wildlife species to have occurred in the Earth’s history.
This is a reasonable inference from available data reported in journal articles since 1990 on …

Acting Out Our Dam Future: Science-Based Role-Play Simulations As Mechanisms For Learning And Natural Resource Planning, Natallia Leuchanka Diessner, Catherine Ashcraft, Weiwei Mo, Cuihong Song, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Shannon Rogers, Kevin H. Gardner
New Hampshire EPSCoR
Science often does not make its way into decisions, leading to a problematic gap between scientific and societal progress. To tackle this issue, our research tests a novel science-based negotiation simulation that integrates a role-play simulation (RPS) with a system dynamics model (SDM). In RPSs, stakeholders engage in a mock decision-making process (reflecting real-life institutional arrangements and scientific knowledge) for a set period. System dynamics models (SDMs) are visual tools used to simulate the interactions and feedback within a complex system. We test the integration of the two approaches with stakeholders in New England via a series of two consecutive …

Hers And His: Silk Glands Used In Egg Sac Construction By Female Spiders Potentially Repurposed By A 'Modern' Male Spider, Mark A. Townley, Danilo Harms
Biological Sciences
Cylindrical silk gland (CY) spigots distinguish a large clade of modern spiders, the CY spigot clade, which includes all entelegyne spiders and their closest relatives. Following a widespread paradigm, CYs and their spigots are only known to occur in female spiders and they produce silk used in the construction of egg sacs. Here we report the occurrence of a CY spigot or CY nubbin on each posterior median spinneret (PMS) in males (5th stadium and later) of the spider Australomimetus maculosus. Late juvenile males had a CY spigot on each PMS, whereas adult males either had a CY spigot or, …
