Science Courts, Evidentiary Procedures And Mixed Science-Policy Decisions, Carl F. Cranor
Science Courts, Evidentiary Procedures And Mixed Science-Policy Decisions, Carl F. Cranor
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
This paper analyzes the potential for science courts to address the social need to regulate human carcinogens and concludes that, on balance, it is not high. From this vantage point, Professor Cranor suggests desiderata for application in other areas where science courts might be used.
The Science Court: Reminiscence And Retrospective, Allan Mazur
The Science Court: Reminiscence And Retrospective, Allan Mazur
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
A self-described "agnostic" on the merits of the Science Court proposal describes how he independently arrived at a similar notion and played a role in efforts to secure a major test of the proposal. Professor Mazur also analyzes university-based experiments structured around that model and concludes that the controversial "judges" are probably unnecessary to achieve his original objectives.

A Comparative Analysis Of Six Methods For Calculating Travel Fatality Risk, Kopl Halperin
A Comparative Analysis Of Six Methods For Calculating Travel Fatality Risk, Kopl Halperin
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Extending the analysis in the previous article, Professor Halperin examines the implications of alternative calculations of travel fatality Risk for public policy and individual decision making. He finds, e.g., that commonly reported death rates tend to minimize the relative Risk of auto travel.
An Analysis Of North Sea Oil Development And Scottish Island Youth: Postmaterialism As An Identifiable And Measurable Dimension, John Alan Anderson
An Analysis Of North Sea Oil Development And Scottish Island Youth: Postmaterialism As An Identifiable And Measurable Dimension, John Alan Anderson
Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines opinions and attitudes of high school age youth living in the Shetland and Orkney islands and explores aspects of rapid growth associated with North Sea oil development. Only a minimal amount of research regarding post-impacts and rapid growth appears in the literature. Studies that do exist lack in theory and methodological consistency. This study draws ideas from mainstream sociology, Social Impact Assessment (SIA), Quality of Life (QoL) and Inglehart's materialism/postmaterialism to develop a working theory of social values and rapid growth. This study further reviews and applies six methodological considerations useable in future SIA, QoL, or boomtown …
Toward An Understanding Of The Cognitive Etiology Of Depressive Reactions To Life Stressors: An Evaluation Of The Hopelessness Theory Of Depression, Nancy Lynne Asdigian
Toward An Understanding Of The Cognitive Etiology Of Depressive Reactions To Life Stressors: An Evaluation Of The Hopelessness Theory Of Depression, Nancy Lynne Asdigian
Doctoral Dissertations
Abramson, Metalsky, and Alloy's (1989) theory of hopelessness depression is the most recent model of depression to emerge from the learned helplessness tradition (Seligman, 1975). Hopelessness theory describes an etiological pathway by which a unique subtype of depression--hopelessness depression--is believed to emerge.
The most proximal cause of hopelessness depression is the formation of a hopelessness expectancy. Experiencing a significant life stressor and either making stable and global causal attributions, anticipating adverse consequences, or inferring derogatory self-attributes is thought to contribute to hopelessness. In turn, generalized tendencies to make stable and global causal attributions, expect negative consequences, or perceive personal deficiencies …

Mountain Goat Removal In Olympic National Park: A Case Study Of The Role Of Organizational Culture In Individual Risk Decisions And Behavior, Seth Tuler, Gary E. Machlis, Roger E. Kasperson
Mountain Goat Removal In Olympic National Park: A Case Study Of The Role Of Organizational Culture In Individual Risk Decisions And Behavior, Seth Tuler, Gary E. Machlis, Roger E. Kasperson
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Using a case study, the authors explore the mediating role of organizational culture in individual Risk-taking decisions and behaviors. They argue that organizational culture can establish unique conditions that lead to highly reliable performance of high-Risk, undesired tasks. The authors also discuss the need for further research and its implications for Risk management.

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
The authors attempt to clarify some of the variables that influence whether people act appropriately when a Risk is substantial and subject to individual control. They do so by reporting results of a pilot study of seat belt use. Also, the authors believe their approach to be generalizable to problems such as encouraging people to test for radon, to use condoms to prevent AIDS or to quit smoking.

Nothing Recedes Like Success - Risk Analysis And The Organizational Amplification Of Risks, William R. Freudenburg
Nothing Recedes Like Success - Risk Analysis And The Organizational Amplification Of Risks, William R. Freudenburg
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Professor Freudenburg believes that there is room for improvement in Risk analysis, particularly in drawing on systematic studies of human behavior in the calculation of real, empirical probabilities of failure. The need is argued to be especially acute where technological Risks are associated with low expected probabilities of failure and are managed by human organizations for extended periods of time. This permits complacency to set in.
