The Relationship Between Marijuana Policy And Prejudice Regarding Adult Black Americans, Caitlin Turner
The Relationship Between Marijuana Policy And Prejudice Regarding Adult Black Americans, Caitlin Turner
Perspectives
Marijuana policy has been a crucial debate for many years in America. Even with the legalization of marijuana in many states, Black people are still being arrested at an unjustified rate in contrast to white people. These differences have led to the overrepresentation of Black people incarcerated for this low-level crime as a direct result of the aftermath of the War on Drugs. This paper will analyze the effects of the overcriminalization of marijuana, more specifically among Black people. It will question the extent of marijuana policy on the outcomes of Black people versus white people and will discuss what …
Early Case Management Involvement For Long-Term Care Planning In The Primary Care Setting To Reduce Avoidable Social Admissions In High-Risk Patients, Elizabeth Blondeau
Early Case Management Involvement For Long-Term Care Planning In The Primary Care Setting To Reduce Avoidable Social Admissions In High-Risk Patients, Elizabeth Blondeau
M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership
There are no protocols for case management referrals of patients at risk for social hospital admissions by their outpatient providers. Social admissions lead to adverse outcomes such as delirium, infections, polypharmacy, falls, functional dependence, pose a resource and financial strain on organizations, and are antithetical to patient-centered care. Timely case management intervention may prevent these hospitalizations by establishing a plan for future care needs. Project activities included the analysis of retrospective admission data from a N.H. community hospital, collaboration with interdisciplinary colleagues among and between both inpatient and outpatient settings, and an evaluation of best practices from the literature, resulting …
Understanding Leadership's Role In Recognizing And Navigating Secondary Trauma Exposure To Create A Positive, Supportive, And Healthy Workplace, Amanda Mace
M.S. in Leadership
Professionals in social services agencies play an essential role in assisting trauma victims. However, research shows that secondary exposure to trauma can have lasting effects on the professionals helping the victims. As a result, this exposure may result in negative psychological responses, including secondary traumatic stress (STS), vicarious trauma (VT), burnout, and compassion fatigue. A systematic search was used across relevant research databases (Granite State College Library, Google Scholar, PubMed) for studies regarding secondary trauma exposure in social services professions. In addition, a survey was distributed to fourteen leaders. The research and survey aimed to explore the prevalence and risk …
Gender Identity And Academic Confidence Across College Major Fields, Sophie Goodwin
Gender Identity And Academic Confidence Across College Major Fields, Sophie Goodwin
Perspectives
This study aimed to measure college students’ sense of personal efficacy and sense of belonging among various majors, specifically concerning the differences across gender identities. The findings thus indicate whether gender experience and norms impact some majors more than others, demonstrating how a history of male domination in certain fields can be internalized on a population level. A total of 300 respondents from a large public university in the northeast United States completed an online survey. In this survey, questions pertaining to self-reported gender identity; school of the respondent’s major, such as life sciences or liberal arts; and agreement with …

The Clinical Observations Of Nursing Students And Recent Graduates Caring For Lgbtq+ People, Emily E. Roy
The Clinical Observations Of Nursing Students And Recent Graduates Caring For Lgbtq+ People, Emily E. Roy
Honors Theses and Capstones
Objective: The next generation of nurses have increased educational preparation to provide affirming care to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, but an evaluation of the effectiveness of this teaching has not been performed. The purpose of this study was to identify nursing student and recent nursing graduate observations of affirming and non-affirming care of LGBTQ+ people in healthcare settings during clinical experiences. We also sought to understand how those experiences affect their ability and willingness to provide affirming health care to LGBTQ+ people.
Methods: Participants filled out a mixed methods Qualtrics survey that was distributed through school …
Mpacts Of Parental Incarceration On Child's Well-Being And Interventions To Support Them, Anna Stacey Roberge
Mpacts Of Parental Incarceration On Child's Well-Being And Interventions To Support Them, Anna Stacey Roberge
Honors Theses and Capstones
This study reviews the effectiveness and impact of current interventions for children who have incarcerated parents in New Hampshire. The negative impacts of parental incarceration have led to the need for these intervention strategies. Recently psychologists and behavioral experts have conducted their studies which show that children who have incarcerated parents are more likely to display delinquent behaviors. Additionally, studies have shown that parental incarceration can lead to the experiencing of several more psychological difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, and learning disorders (Kremer et al., 2020). Several communities have worked to implement interventions that will help these children avoid falling …
Implementation Of A Standardized Process To Increase Promotion Of Family Presence During Resuscitation, Eileen Hollis
Implementation Of A Standardized Process To Increase Promotion Of Family Presence During Resuscitation, Eileen Hollis
DNP Scholarly Projects
BACKGROUND: Family Presence During Resuscitation (FPDR), has been studied and recommended as an important and relevant practice for decades, yet it remains controversial with frequent barriers to implementation. The benefits of this practice are numerous; and to truly embrace shared decision making, nurses and providers must encourage patients and families to participate in all aspects of care, even during resuscitation events. As evidence supporting the emotional and psychological benefits of FPDR began to grow, however, a global pandemic brought family presence to an abrupt halt.
METHODS: This quality improvement project’s focus was to standardize a process for offering and allowing …
Improving Provider Retention Through Addressing Burnout At A Federally Qualified Health Center: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Emily Grattan
Improving Provider Retention Through Addressing Burnout At A Federally Qualified Health Center: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Emily Grattan
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Primary care providers employed by federally qualified health centers (FQHC) working with underserved populations experience high levels of burnout as patients are often medically complex, face healthcare disparities and societal stigmas. The aim of the project was to alleviate burnout and improve provider retention through introduction of organizational support measures. Participants involved were healthcare providers, as well as nurse management and senior leadership.
Methods: The quality improvement approach for this project utilized the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle and a driver diagram to guide the selected interventions. Interventions were based on categories from Mayo’s Clinic’s Nine Organizational Strategies to Promote Engagement …

The Utility Of Participatory Family Diagramming In Qualitative Research: Multidisciplinary Applications And Practical Advice, Melissa D. Day, Tyler B. Jamison
The Utility Of Participatory Family Diagramming In Qualitative Research: Multidisciplinary Applications And Practical Advice, Melissa D. Day, Tyler B. Jamison
Faculty Publications
Graphic elicitation and diagramming are useful for qualitative researchers. Diagrams of families have been used in clinical, education, and other applied settings as tools for description and analysis of family relationships since the 1950s. Despite the potential utility of family diagrams to qualitative researchers who seek to understand and theorize the complexities of family structures and relationships, participatory family diagramming, where diagrams of family relationships are co-created by researcher(s) and participant(s) and used as a foundation for interviewing, has largely remained an untapped resource. We describe how we used participatory family diagrams as design elements of multidisciplinary qualitative interview study …

Improvement Of Meaningful Referrals Following Nursing Assessment Of Oncology Patient Distress, Genesis Sullivan
Improvement Of Meaningful Referrals Following Nursing Assessment Of Oncology Patient Distress, Genesis Sullivan
M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership
The purpose of this project was to transition a current paper-based assessment into the electronic medical record chart and develop automated referrals to trigger off the responses. I selected this project because delays in searching for the scanned paper assessment and manual referral entry could negatively impact the patient’s treatment journey. Methods used included bringing a multidisciplinary team together and reviewing multiple nursing and medical journeys for best practices on electronic assessments. Collaboration with the formed team including the Information Technology department was necessary and the development of new nursing workflows. Education to nursing colleagues was required before implementation. The …

Investigating Racial And Ethnic Disparities In The Provision Of Workplace Accommodations In The United States, Debra L. Brucker, Megan Henly, Andrew J. Houtenville
Institute on Disability
This study used data from a nationally representative survey that follows people 50 and older over time (the Health and Retirement Study) to test whether the receipt of workplace accommodations by persons with work limitations varies by race/ethnicity. Workplace accommodations can include changes to time (allowing more breaks, allowing different arrival or departure times, or shortening the workday), provision of equipment/assistance (getting someone to help, getting special equipment, arranging special transportation), and changes to work (changing the job, helping to learn new job skills). We found that 85% of persons with work limitations identified a need for workplace accommodations, but …

The Evolution Of Assigned Reading: The Diversity In New Hampshire High School Reading And Student Reading Engagement, Julian Maduro
The Evolution Of Assigned Reading: The Diversity In New Hampshire High School Reading And Student Reading Engagement, Julian Maduro
Inquiry Journal Spring 2022
The research on current high school reading lists is limited; however, studies suggest that high school literary curricula have remained nearly unchanged for the last thirty years. Since the reading lists of the 1990s were found to lack racial and gender diversity and to mostly contain texts written before the year 1965, an unchanged list would likely be unable to fit the demographics and interests of students today, potentially negatively impacting student reading engagement. This survey study investigated how high school reading lists in New Hampshire have evolved since the 1990s. New Hampshire high school English teachers were asked to …
Preventing Sexual Assault In Long-Term Care Facilities: Identifying Strategies For Facilities And State Survey Agencies, Erlon Jones
M.S. in Leadership
This project was conducting research to identify strategies and approaches to prevent the sexual assault of residents in long-term living facilities. This subject area was selected due to the increase of resident-to-resident sexual assaults in long-term care facilities, and the need for leadership in addressing this situation. Research was conducted in several areas including elder care, facility management, sexual assault advocacy. The results provide several recommendations and strategies for facilities to utilize to prevent sexual assaults, and provide State Agencies a rubric to investigate alleged sexual assaults. This will provide an important foundation to address this critical issue across the …
