Using Informatics To Improve Autism Screening In A Pediatric Primary Care Practice, Jessica Teates
Using Informatics To Improve Autism Screening In A Pediatric Primary Care Practice, Jessica Teates
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: According to the most recent report from the CDC (2018), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects approximately one in 59 children in the United States (U.S.). In 2007, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a strong recommendation for all primary care providers to screen children for autism, using a validated tool, at the 18 and 24-month well-child visits, in order to begin the referral process for more formal testing, and intervention, promptly. Despite the strong stance of the AAP and evidence supporting the importance of early intervention for children with ASD, not all primary care providers are screening for …
An Inpatient Rehabilitation Interprofessional Care Pathway For Traumatic Hip Fracture: A Pilot Quality Improvement Project, Sarah Plante
An Inpatient Rehabilitation Interprofessional Care Pathway For Traumatic Hip Fracture: A Pilot Quality Improvement Project, Sarah Plante
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Each year over 300,000 older adults are hospitalized for hip fracture. The impact of the cost of hip fracture on the US health care system is estimated to be as high as $9 billion, with the typical cost of a hip fracture episode around $30,000. Formalized pathways have been developed and successfully utilized for many patient presentations, including hip fracture, in the acute setting. Although this research is important to the comprehensive care of the elderly hip fracture patient, very little research exists that outlines evidence-based best-practice for patients in the post-acute recovery period.
Purpose: The primary aim of …
Demons, Spirits, And Elephants: Reflections On The Failure Of Public Administration Theory, Melvin Dubnick
Demons, Spirits, And Elephants: Reflections On The Failure Of Public Administration Theory, Melvin Dubnick
Faculty Publications
Author's Note: This paper was originally written and presented in 1999 as both a critical reflection on Public Administration's ongoing "identity crisis" and a rather (often too harsh) assessment of several recently published works that seemed exemplary of the problem being highlighted. Although some aspects of the argument made in the paper did find an outlet (see Dubnick, 2000), its length and contentious tone meant it was unlikely to find a mainstream outlet for publication. Nevertheless, it did circulate among colleagues and generated some collegial and published reaction (see Bogason et al., 2000). Eventually relegated to a location at the …
Sex Differences In Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Caroline C. Cherry
Sex Differences In Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Caroline C. Cherry
Honors Theses and Capstones
This study used a retrospective practice-based research method to compare levels of internalizing and externalizing behaviors of a clinically-ascertained sample of young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; n=90). As measured by the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), internalizing and externalizing behaviors were compared to normative behavior, and between boys and girls with ASD. Findings suggest that in a clinical sample, children with ASD are more likely than typically developing children to have internalizing and/or externalizing problems. No significant sex differences were found for Internalizing Problems, Externalizing Problems, or Total Problems scores on either the parent or teacher …

Carsey Perspectives: Children In United States, Both White And Black, Are Growing Up In Dramatically Smaller Families, Tony Fahey
Carsey Publications
In this perspectives brief, author Tony Fahey presents novel findings on how much smaller family sizes are among children in the United States today, particularly African American children, than they were fifty years ago. Using data from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series from the U.S. Census and the Current Population Survey, he reports that the average African American child was one of 6.53 siblings in 1960 and today is one of 3.18. Because smaller families may enable parents to devote more resources to each child, these trends raise the so-far unrecognized possibility that the fall in children’s family size, …
