Preventing Violence Among Adolescents: The Many Roles Of School Personnel, Andrew Rizzo
Preventing Violence Among Adolescents: The Many Roles Of School Personnel, Andrew Rizzo
Doctoral Dissertations
Youth violence can encompass a range of types of harmful behaviors that each have their own definitions, high prevalence rates, and litany of negative consequences for both adolescent victims and perpetrators. It includes behaviors that can be labeled based on the nature of the act itself such as physical assault, verbal harassment, relational violence, sexual violence, or cyber violence (Basile et al., 2020; Hasbrouck, 2020). One of the primary avenues of youth violence prevention is through school-based programs that often involve school personnel (Butchart et al., 2019). This dissertation contributes to the extant knowledge about school personnel’s impact on preventing …

Addressing Medical Mistrust In In-Patient Psychiatric African American (Aa) Patients, Eselle Molua
DNP Scholarly Projects
Abstract
Background: Medical Mistrust (MM) is associated with patient dissatisfaction, treatment nonadherence, and poor health outcomes. In the United States, MM is prevalent in African American patients in In-Patient Psychiatric settings. Caregiver training and education on MM and cultural sensitivity can help identify mistrust and provide strategies to increase trust and reduce mistrust.
Purpose: The aim of this project was to implement an educational tool to improve caregiver awareness about knowledge of MM. By doing so, it was the goal to enhance cultural sensitivity skills and patient-centeredness in the African American population at the adult psychiatric unit in Northwest …
Improving Employee Engagement On An Inpatient Unit: A Quality Improvement Project, Holly Mccormack
Improving Employee Engagement On An Inpatient Unit: A Quality Improvement Project, Holly Mccormack
DNP Scholarly Projects
BACKGROUND: Engaged employees are paramount to the success of an organization. They are more invested in their organization and the unit on which they work. This investment in the organization results in higher patient satisfaction and safety, less staff turnover, and improved quality. According to the literature, generational differences may be necessary to consider when improving employee engagement. To successfully lead a multigenerational workforce, nurse leaders should consider these differences and incorporate them into their strategic plan for employee engagement.
METHODS: A pilot survey was conducted on a medical-surgical unit to assess a perceived lack of engagement. Subsequently, work engagement …
Pervasive Infancy: Reassessing The Contract Capacity Of Adults In Modern America, Michael S. Lewis
Pervasive Infancy: Reassessing The Contract Capacity Of Adults In Modern America, Michael S. Lewis
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
This article argues that the law of consumer contracts should permit adults to access the same protections available to children where data about adult performance indicates that the two categories of people are similarly situated within the domain of consumer contracts. In making this claim, this article relies upon a description of capacity articulated by Professor Martha Nussbaum in her important work on the subject. Professor Nussbaum explains that capacity is a function, not only of a person’s innate capabilities, but of a person’s opportunity or ability to deploy those capabilities within environmental limitations. Capacity to contract in a free …

Exploring Student Motivation In Quantitative Biology, Alexander Richard Kulacki
Exploring Student Motivation In Quantitative Biology, Alexander Richard Kulacki
Master's Theses and Capstones
The field of biology is becoming increasingly reliant on quantitative tools, methods, and techniques, driving a need for incoming biologists to have robust quantitative skills. However, efforts to incorporate more quantitative skills at the undergraduate level are hampered by low student engagement with math in biology. Students’ motivation towards quantitative biology can provide insight into how best to increase their engagement and thus performance with these topics. This thesis examines students’ motivation towards math in biology through two key constructs: 1) students’ self-efficacy, through the theoretical lens of Social Cognitive Theory; and 2) students’ task-values, through the theoretical lens of …

The Sustainability Institute Publications
Addressing social inequities has been recognized as foundational to transforming food systems. Activists and scholars have critiqued food movements as lacking an orientation towards addressing issues of social justice. To address issues of inequity, sustainable food systems education (SFSE) programs will have to increase students’ equity-related capabilities. Our first objective in this paper is to determine the extent to which SFSE programs in the USA and Canada address equity. We identified 108 programs and reviewed their public facing documents for an explicit focus on equity. We found that roughly 80% of universities with SFSE programs do not provide evidence that …

Bullying Trends In The United States And An Analysis Of The Impact Of Prevention Programs On Bullying Subtypes And Gender, Reeve Kennedy
Bullying Trends In The United States And An Analysis Of The Impact Of Prevention Programs On Bullying Subtypes And Gender, Reeve Kennedy
Doctoral Dissertations
This three-article dissertation presents three standalone articles that address bullying trends over time within the United States (US), gaps in bullying prevention program outcomes (both within the US and internationally), and the role of study and methodological features on the findings. The first article used meta-regression to establish trends in different types of bullying involvement from 1998 to 2017, identified factors that help explain variation in bullying trends, and determined differences in those trends by gender and grade. The second article used meta-analysis to examine the effectiveness of bullying prevention programs on three subtypes of traditional bullying victimization: physical, relational, …
“Speaking Of Dignity”: Interviews With Non-Unionized Adjunct Faculty Teaching In An English Department At A Catholic Church-Affiliated University, Jacob Aaron Bennett
“Speaking Of Dignity”: Interviews With Non-Unionized Adjunct Faculty Teaching In An English Department At A Catholic Church-Affiliated University, Jacob Aaron Bennett
Doctoral Dissertations
This study considers the phenomenon of “dignity” as experienced by non-unionized, part-time, English Department faculty at a Catholic Church-affiliated campus in the Northeast region of the United States; I refer to the institution as Urban Catholic University. This focus is motivated by the apparent tension between Catholic social traditions regarding labor rights and worker dignity, on the one hand, and working conditions for adjuncts as described in the literature on higher education faculty employment. To wit, the labor-positive and union-affirmative tradition in Catholic Social Teaching (CST) has been unequivocally supportive of the rights of workers to unionize since the 1890s, …

WELCOME to WINDOWS on the INQUIRY CLASSROOM!
You have landed on a piece of a National Science Foundation Project (DUE 1245730) directed by Professor Chris Bauer, Chemistry Department, University of New Hampshire. This is one part of a completely documented inquiry-based university science course called “Fire & Ice” which explores the nature of heat and temperature. There are multiple video perspectives and commentary from instructors and students, and documents of all course materials (agenda, instructions, student work). It’s too complicated to explain here. Take a look at the user orientation document at this link.

From Believing To Doing: Teacher Ownership Of Inclusive Education Practices A Grounded Theory Case Study, Maria Agorastou
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of the current qualitative study was to explore the in-depth experiences of school teachers in an urban public elementary school in Greece, looking at 1) their role as change agents, as it pertains to inclusive education practices, and 2) their conception of ownership toward this change
This case study utilized a Straussian grounded-theory design to guide the collecting and coding of interview data in order to identify emerging categories and generate substantive theory. The researcher collected data through interviews with 15 teachers, administrators and parents of the school community.
Adhering to a constant comparative analysis of the data, …
Creating Buy-In From Nurse Leaders To Implement Inpatient Education And Screening For Human Trafficking: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Andrea Macdonald
Creating Buy-In From Nurse Leaders To Implement Inpatient Education And Screening For Human Trafficking: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Andrea Macdonald
DNP Scholarly Projects
BACKGROUND: Human trafficking is an under-recognized healthcare issue affecting an
estimated 20 to 40 million individuals globally. Professional nursing organizations, healthcare
regulatory bodies and legislators have declared the need for education and screening practices. A
quality improvement initiative designed to create buy-in from nurse leaders to create and
implement education, screening and a protocol to guide care of human trafficking victims who
may present to inpatient and clinic settings at the organization was developed to bridge gaps in
knowledge and inform evidence-based practice.
METHODS: Literature review informed the development of an education intervention presented
to nurse leaders using multi-modal learning …
