Emotional Intelligence: The Key To Staff Retention, Ashley Wilson Jul 2021

Emotional Intelligence: The Key To Staff Retention, Ashley Wilson

M.S. in Leadership

This research intends to make a case that leaders with emotional intelligence are the key to maintaining good employees using two primary resources both academic journals and employee questionnaires completed by non-profit area agency staff. This literature review will make a compelling argument that emotional intelligence in leaders is a pertinent characteristic when determining the cause behind staff retention. It will conclude with ways in which leaders can learn emotional intelligence and use that knowledge to ensure job satisfaction and strengthen staff retention.

Safeguarding The Lives Of Children Affected By Boko Haram: Application Of The Safe Model Of Child Protection To A Rights-Based Situation Analysis, Rosie O'Connor, Theresa S. Betancourt, Ngozi V. Enelamah Jun 2021

Safeguarding The Lives Of Children Affected By Boko Haram: Application Of The Safe Model Of Child Protection To A Rights-Based Situation Analysis, Rosie O'Connor, Theresa S. Betancourt, Ngozi V. Enelamah

Faculty Publications

The Boko Haram insurgency in northeast Nigeria is responsible for the highest number of lives lost in Africa in the past decade. The country has witnessed significant violations of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Nigeria has signed and ratified. For instance, Nigeria had the second-highest number of children recruited to armed groups and the third-highest number of abductions in 2018. Current humanitarian efforts primarily target camps for internally displaced persons, while state strategies focus mainly on addressing security through combatant-targeted interventions. However, there is a need for more rights-based, integrated, and multifaceted approaches to …

The “American Dream” In Black And White Populations: A Perceptions Versus Reality Analysis, Emma Watts May 2021

The “American Dream” In Black And White Populations: A Perceptions Versus Reality Analysis, Emma Watts

Perspectives

Do White and Black Americans equally believe in the American Dream? Does the American Dream offer hope for Black Americans to hold on to, or has racial oppression made the dream feel out of reach? Since such ideas, like the promise of social mobility offered by freedom, motivate and inform economic, social, and political beliefs, understanding how such narratives function is of critical need. In this study, I used the 2012 Outlook on Life Survey (N=2,294) to analyze the differences in attitudes about the American Dream between Black and White populations in the United States. I analyzed data about how …

Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Inclusion In The Military: A Qualitative Look At Military Culture A Decade After The Repeal Of Don’T Ask, Don’T Tell, Whitney Elizabeth O’Connell May 2021

Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Inclusion In The Military: A Qualitative Look At Military Culture A Decade After The Repeal Of Don’T Ask, Don’T Tell, Whitney Elizabeth O’Connell

Master's Theses and Capstones

In 2010, the very controversial Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) policy was repealed, allowing lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) members to serve openly in the military without fear of legal persecution. Now that a decade has passed, this research seeks to find whether LGB service members feel safe and comfortable serving openly in the military ranks; whether some groups—perhaps those in more protected or privileged positions—feel more safe, whereas others feel less safe; and whether LGB military members are pressured to adhere to homonormativity to be accepted in the military.I conducted a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews to answer these …

An Improv-Able Legacy: Shining The Composition Spotlight On Viola Spolin’S Improvisational Pedagogy, Cory Richard Chamberlain May 2021

An Improv-Able Legacy: Shining The Composition Spotlight On Viola Spolin’S Improvisational Pedagogy, Cory Richard Chamberlain

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is an archival study of the works of Viola Spolin who is considered by many to be the founding mother of improvisational theater. During her life she published Improvisation for the Theater which is essential reading for anyone interested in doing improvisational theater as well as Theater Games for The Classroom where she adapted some of her techniques and games to an educational setting outside of theater. Along with these works, I was able to examine two of her unpublished works, a handbook on education and What’s Your Score? as well as various notes, correspondences and interviews housed …

Justice System Outcomes Of Children Referred For Sexual Offenses, Kei Saito May 2021

Justice System Outcomes Of Children Referred For Sexual Offenses, Kei Saito

Doctoral Dissertations

The proliferation of increasingly punitive sex crime legislation in the United States have extended to include children adjudicated of sexual offenses. Using data from the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, this dissertation examined the impact of three factors on sentencing outcomes for children referred for illegal sexual behaviors: race, same-sex victim, and county of referral. (1) Black children were disproportionately arrested for sexual offenses compared to any other racial/ethnic group. However, Black children in the sample were less likely to face harsher outcomes compared to Caucasian children, such as adjudication and ordered to register as a sex offender. (2) Children …

Examining The Relationship Between Life Skill Development And Negative Experiences In Sport: The Influence Of Resilience, Levone Lee May 2021

Examining The Relationship Between Life Skill Development And Negative Experiences In Sport: The Influence Of Resilience, Levone Lee

Master's Theses and Capstones

A study by Kendellen and Camire (2015) demonstrated that sport participants not only experienced positive outcomes (i.e., development of life skills), but also encounter numerous examples of negative experiences (i.e., anxiety, aggression, negative interactions with coaches, and prioritizing sport over school). Negative experiences have been linked to an increased risk of detrimental outcomes, such as mental and behavioral health concerns. However, there is a paucity of research examining the impact that negative experiences have on positive outcomes. Utilizing a risk and resiliency framework (Fraser et al., 1999), which proposes that individuals have the capability of attaining positive outcomes even when …

Faculty Publications

The Arctic faces multiple pressures including climate change, shifting demographics, human health risks, social justice imbalances, governance issues, and expanding resource extraction. A convergence of academic disciplines—such as natural and social sciences, engineering and technology, health and medicine—and international perspectives is required to meaningfully contribute to solving the challenges of Arctic peoples and ecosystems. However, successfully carrying out convergent, international research and education remains a challenge. Here, lessons from the planning phase of a convergence research project concerned with the health of Arctic waters developed by the Arctic Science IntegrAtion Quest (ASIAQ) are discussed. We discuss our perspective on the …

The Development Of A Pilot Program For A Standardized New Graduate Nurse Orientation Process To Support The Transition To Practice During Covid-19, Jennifer Low Apr 2021

The Development Of A Pilot Program For A Standardized New Graduate Nurse Orientation Process To Support The Transition To Practice During Covid-19, Jennifer Low

M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership

New graduate nurses represent ten percent of the current nursing workforce and with the nursing shortage, retention of these nurses is key for sustaining and growing the labor pool. Furthermore, with almost twenty-five percent of new nurses leaving their positions within two years of starting, we must address the successful transition to practice. The move from student to graduate nurse can be stressful and difficult, but when combined with pandemic with reduced or no hands-on clinical experiences during their last year of school, there is greater pressure for organizations to provide orientation that addresses the specific needs of these new …

Antecedents And Consequences Of Rape Myth Acceptance: College Date Rape Attitudes, Bystander Attitudes, Readiness To Change, Bystander Efficacy And Decisional Balance, Denisa Adanma Okolie Jan 2021

Antecedents And Consequences Of Rape Myth Acceptance: College Date Rape Attitudes, Bystander Attitudes, Readiness To Change, Bystander Efficacy And Decisional Balance, Denisa Adanma Okolie

Master's Theses and Capstones

Over four decades, researchers have continued to find that sexual violence is highly predicted by rape myth acceptance and that those individuals who have higher rape myth acceptance are more likely to become perpetrators of sexual assault and rape. While researchers found that gender, athletic participation, Greek affiliation, and attitudes towards women were valid predictors of rape myth acceptance scores, the evidence was mixed for other factors such as race, age, and religiosity. However, few researchers examined the effects of readiness to change and bystander efficacy on rape myth acceptance. This study used data from a larger study to examine …
