Negotiating With Terrorists Considered: A Review Of Scholarly Literature, Alexandru Panait May 2014

Negotiating With Terrorists Considered: A Review Of Scholarly Literature, Alexandru Panait

Perspectives

It is unrealistic to determine what is the most cost-effective counter-terrorist strategy without taking into account efficacy of all available counter-terrorist tactics. Logically the best strategy is that which allows one to construct a variety of tactics that tailors to a given situation. However such a meta-strategy is highly limited by the outright dismissal of a given tactic on the basis of moral arguments or assumptions. A practical analysis of a tactic is required first before asking whether it is worth keeping and what its best for when a terrorist situation is presented. While military and police options have been …

The Effect Of Unh Undergraduate Student Exercise On Academic Achievement, Nicolas Pacheco May 2014

The Effect Of Unh Undergraduate Student Exercise On Academic Achievement, Nicolas Pacheco

Perspectives

A number of existing studies focus on the effect exercise and dietary habits have on social relationships; however, few studies examine the relationship between exercise and academic performance on college students. In this study, surveys were administered to 202 students at the University of New Hampshire. Although the data presented no statistically significant findings to prove a correlation between exercise and academic performance, students who never exercised were shown to be more likely to do poorly rather than excel academically. Future research should consist of a larger sample using a random sampling method for better reliability and validity in determining …

Intimate Partner Violence Among Lgbtq+ College Students, Katie Edwards, Kateryna Sylaska Mar 2014

Intimate Partner Violence Among Lgbtq+ College Students, Katie Edwards, Kateryna Sylaska

Carsey Publications

Drawing from a survey of 391 college students in same-sex relationships, this brief documents the rates and patterns of intimate partner violence, and responses to it among LGBTQ+ youth. Authors Katie Edwards and Kateryna Sylaska report that four in ten LGBTQ+ college students in the sample reported intimate partner violence victimization or perpetration within a current relationship and that more than one-third of the victims told no one about the abuse, a rate that is higher than what is generally found among heterosexual college students. Victims most frequently turned to friends when revealing the abuse, followed by family members. Only …

Patient Satisfaction And Ultrasound Use During Pregnancy, Paige Ricci, Robert J. Mcgrath, Michelle Stransky Feb 2014

Patient Satisfaction And Ultrasound Use During Pregnancy, Paige Ricci, Robert J. Mcgrath, Michelle Stransky

Institute on Disability

Use, number, and frequency of ultrasounds women receive during pregnancy vary widely in practice. Current evidence suggests that women presenting with pregnancy complications benefit from additional ultrasounds, although excessive ultrasound use in low risk pregnancies may be unnecessary, costly and potentially harmful. However, evidence also finds that the use of ultrasound technology is associated with mothers’ feelings of security and satisfaction with care; health care organizations are incentivized to promote these feelings of patient satisfaction, especially when clinical risk is considered low. Here, we examine the impact of ultrasound use on satisfaction during pregnancy among women in the Northeast who …
