Emic Views Of A Reading Intervention: A Qualitative Case Study Of Motivation And Engagement, Joy Dangora Erickson May 2019

Emic Views Of A Reading Intervention: A Qualitative Case Study Of Motivation And Engagement, Joy Dangora Erickson

Doctoral Dissertations

Although little attention has been paid to primary-age children’s reading motivation in comparison to older readers, one disturbing trend has been repeatedly observed: reading motivation generally declines across the early elementary years. Given that children’s perceptions of school experiences shape motivation, and motivation impacts achievement, it is imperative that we better understand how school programming intended to promote reading skill development influences younger students’ motivation to read within it and beyond it. This dissertation employs a qualitative case study design, an approach rarely used to examine reading motivation, to begin addressing the first concern; a sample (N=14) of kindergarten, first-grade, …

What Stepmothers Can Teach Us About Contemporary Family Life, The Institution Of Motherhood, And The Reproduction Of Gender Inequality, Melissa Day May 2019

What Stepmothers Can Teach Us About Contemporary Family Life, The Institution Of Motherhood, And The Reproduction Of Gender Inequality, Melissa Day

Doctoral Dissertations

A substantial amount of scholarly attention has been dedicated to understanding changes in the institution of family and, within the context of these changes, how the institution of motherhood continues to play a central role in reproducing gender inequalities for women in society. Through two distinct, but interrelated papers, this dissertation examines stepmothers’ experiences in the family with the goal of expanding our understanding of the reach of the institution of motherhood into the lives of all women. The first paper draws on 33 semi- structured, in-depth interviews with stepmothers. From these data, my findings are two-fold. First, I find …

Workplace Creativity And Motivation Among Counselors In A Residential Summer Camp Setting, Myles L. Lynch May 2019

Workplace Creativity And Motivation Among Counselors In A Residential Summer Camp Setting, Myles L. Lynch

Doctoral Dissertations

The following dissertation includes an overarching introduction and three conceptually linked articles described below. First, the introduction describes the educational and programmatic components of summer camp, a non-formal educational setting, based on the foundational writing of educational philosopher John Dewey. The introduction also identifies key definitions, concepts, and theoretical frameworks related to outdoor education, creativity, and motivation. The three articles, briefly described below, are self-contained and include distinct introductions, discussions, and implications for future research. Article 1. Summer camp is often anecdotally described as a context which may support creativity due to its unique programmatic features. For instance, residential summer …

Informal Caregiver Identity: Voluntary Job Fit, Teamwork, And Tools, Erica Spunt Jablonski May 2019

Informal Caregiver Identity: Voluntary Job Fit, Teamwork, And Tools, Erica Spunt Jablonski

Doctoral Dissertations

According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, an informal or family caregiver is “an unpaid individual . . . involved in assisting others with activities of daily living and/or medical tasks.” As informal caregiving in the United States has increased, research on the topic has been published in a myriad of disciplines (e.g., sociology, nursing, social work, and medicine). The literature has defined informal caregivers (ICGs), described their role and its impacts, detailed the costs and benefits of informal caregiving, and evaluated interventions to assist ICGs. Scholars have also investigated more natural, less experimental use of informational and support resources for …

Dare To Care? An Exploration Of Student-Teacher Caring Relationships, Te-Hsin Chang May 2019

Dare To Care? An Exploration Of Student-Teacher Caring Relationships, Te-Hsin Chang

Doctoral Dissertations

Schools often provide students their first and most frequented public environments that require them to learn and exercise important social skills. Teachers, crucial and central people in these environments, play many roles in supporting students although their vital support is often overlooked when the contribution is non-cognitively related. In recent years, there has been more research and focus on social-emotional learning (SEL) but relatively few studies that investigate caring relationships between students and teachers. Yet when students perceive that their teachers care for them, the little research we have suggests that students cognitive and non-cognitive performance in school improves. To …

Navigating The Path To Presence: Ideology, Politics, And The Campaign For Gender Balanced Boards And Commissions In Iowa, Ezra Joseph Temko May 2019

Navigating The Path To Presence: Ideology, Politics, And The Campaign For Gender Balanced Boards And Commissions In Iowa, Ezra Joseph Temko

Doctoral Dissertations

From 1986 through 1988, Iowa adopted and strengthened a gender balance law that required men and women be equally represented on state boards and commissions. In 2009, Iowa extended this law to also require its counties, municipalities, and school districts to gender balance their boards and commissions. Iowa’s law remains unique in the United States. Through archival research and interviews, my research investigates how advocates navigated the ideological landscape associated with this policy issue. My research unveils the mechanisms that substantially deradicalized gender balance in Iowa, enabling its passage and shifting Iowans’ perceptions of gender, governance, and affirmative action—disembedding gender …

Perspectives On Change: The Coeducational Transition Of Saint Anselm College 1969-1979, Benjamin Matthew Horton

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines Saint Anselm College’s transition to a fully coeducational Benedictine Catholic liberal arts college between 1969 and 1979, employing a twofold data sample comprised of archival documents and oral history interviews with early female alumnae, who experienced campus life firsthand during the 1960s and 1970s. The researcher conducted analysis of historical documents available at Saint Anselm College, including: presidential files, minutes of the monastic and Advisory Board of Trustees meetings, college yearbooks, Registrar and Dean’s Office data, college catalogues, Advancement Office data, New Hampshire College and University Council (NHCUC) data, New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) …

Science Diplomacy In The Atlantic Arctic: Assessing Potential Expansion Of The Distributed Biological Observatory (Dbo) To The Baffin Bay-Davis Strait Area, Claire Eaton May 2019

Science Diplomacy In The Atlantic Arctic: Assessing Potential Expansion Of The Distributed Biological Observatory (Dbo) To The Baffin Bay-Davis Strait Area, Claire Eaton

Master's Theses and Capstones

The scale and rate of climate change in the Arctic has increased the sense of urgency surrounding development of systems-level observing programs that aim to capture and analyze time series data related to environmental change. While the international scientific community has made great strides in program design and technological innovation, gaps in coverage remain between observing systems, presenting a complex interdisciplinary problem, or “grand challenge.” Research that aims to address global scale challenges, such as those faced in a rapidly changing Arctic, are often associated with extremely high operational costs and typically extend beyond the scope and capabilities of any …

Measuring, Modeling, And Evaluating The Spatial Properties Of Northeast Oregon Forests Using Unmanned Aerial Systems, James Perkins May 2019

Measuring, Modeling, And Evaluating The Spatial Properties Of Northeast Oregon Forests Using Unmanned Aerial Systems, James Perkins

Master's Theses and Capstones

There is an ever expanding range of applications for the aerial images that unmanned aerial systems can uniquely provide. One such application is the use of high-resolution imagery for stand-level forest inventory. Inventory techniques utilizing unmanned aerial systems could be attractive where conditions demand high-resolution data, or where other aerial imagery sources are cost prohibitive. Here the effectiveness of unmanned aerial systems in this application was tested. Over the summer of 2015, a remote-controlled hexacopter equipped with a micro four thirds camera was flown over multiple 1600 meter-squared forested plots in Eastern Oregon. Additional ground-level validation measurements were collected including …

Assessing Functional Connectivity Of The Neural Networks In Childhood Apraxia Of Speech Using Resting State Fmri Following The Treatment For Establishing Motor Program Organization (Tempo), Morgan James May 2019

Assessing Functional Connectivity Of The Neural Networks In Childhood Apraxia Of Speech Using Resting State Fmri Following The Treatment For Establishing Motor Program Organization (Tempo), Morgan James

Master's Theses and Capstones

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder characterized by segmentation (increased segment and intersegment duration), speech sound distortions and equal lexical stress. This study examined the effects of four weeks of Treatment for Establishing Motor Program Organization (TEMPO) in inducing experience-based changes in the brain. A fMRI resting state functional connectivity analysis was used in a single-subject pre- and post-TEMPO to quantify the changes associated with this treatment. Increases in connectivity strength between specific regions of the brain were observed, with the largest change in connectivity strength occurring between the left and right ventral premotor cortex (vPMC). …

I Cannot Tell A Lie: Emotional Intelligence As A Predictor Of Deceptive Behavior, Jasmine A. Huffman Apr 2019

I Cannot Tell A Lie: Emotional Intelligence As A Predictor Of Deceptive Behavior, Jasmine A. Huffman

Inquiry Journal 2019

Research has identified that perceived acceptability and likelihood of lying depend on the type of lie and personality characteristics such as honesty, kindness, assertiveness, and Machiavellianism. However, this research has focused on individuals’ experiences of their own emotions and neglected to consider how an individual’s understanding of others and their emotions influences deceptive behavior. I expanded upon this research during the summer of 2018 by investigating the relationship between emotional intelligence, personal intelligence, and perceived acceptability and likelihood of telling four types of lies, which are distinguished from one another based on their motivation (altruistic, conflict avoidance, social acceptance, or …

Korean‐American Military Brat Lands In Nh And Seeks To Improve Mental Health Training For Future Pediatricians, Claudia R. Maynard Apr 2019

Korean‐American Military Brat Lands In Nh And Seeks To Improve Mental Health Training For Future Pediatricians, Claudia R. Maynard

Inquiry Journal 2019

Early recognition of psychiatric disorders is a crucial part of improving a patient’s quality of life. Pediatricians are vital in detecting child anxiety, but studies show a lack of training in evaluating, managing, and treating anxiety disorders. Furthermore, there is limited research regarding clinical decision making among early‐career medical professionals. I joined the Pediatric Anxiety Training Study (PATS), managed by Dr. Nicholas Mian at the University of New Hampshire at Manchester, which aims to improve pediatric residents’ ability to evaluate anxiety disorders. I focused on the possible influence of medical resident characteristics (career focus, interest in child mental health issues, …

Physical-World Knowledge And Public Views On Climate Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Linda M. Fogg Mar 2019

Physical-World Knowledge And Public Views On Climate Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Linda M. Fogg

Faculty Publications

Climate change is a formidable topic, challenging the research efforts of countless scientists across many different fields. Surveys find surprisingly high levels of confidence among nonscientists, however, regarding their own understanding of climate change. More than threefourths of the respondents on recent U.S. surveys claimed to understand either a moderate amount or a great deal about climate change. Follow-up questions testing actual knowledge suggest that self-assessments are high relative to physical-world knowledge. For some people, self-assessments reflect confidence in their political views rather than geographical or science knowledge. This paper replicates and extends previous research using new data: an October …
