Post Discharge Follow-Up Telephone Calls For Patients Who Received Hospital Based Palliative Care Services To Improve Quality Of Care And Outcomes: A Pilot Study, Katherine Adams Jan 2018

Post Discharge Follow-Up Telephone Calls For Patients Who Received Hospital Based Palliative Care Services To Improve Quality Of Care And Outcomes: A Pilot Study, Katherine Adams

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background

There is a rising number of patients with chronic health conditions concurrent with an increasing number of hospital readmissions within 30 days and emergency department visits. Predominantly based in acute care facilities, palliative care services have been effective in improving the quality of life in patients with chronic health conditions. However, the largest population that could benefit from palliative care services is community based in the home setting.

Purpose

The purpose of this project was the implement and evaluate follow-up telephone calls made in addition to visiting nursing (VNA) services to detect in early decline in patients who have …

Comparing The Effects Of Monensin And Sodium Butyrate On Coccidia In Post-Weaned Heifers, Hannah R. Coffin Jan 2018

Comparing The Effects Of Monensin And Sodium Butyrate On Coccidia In Post-Weaned Heifers, Hannah R. Coffin

Honors Theses and Capstones

The emergence of antibiotic resistances has raised concerns in society about the widespread use of antibiotics, such as monensin, as growth enhancers in agriculture. Pressure to find alternatives has increased since the European Union banned the use of ionophorous antibiotics. Butyrate supplementation has been found to enhance growth in pre-weaned calves and it has been recently suggested to enhance growth in post-weaned heifers. In a recent study by Rice in 2017, there was a quadratic (P=0.03) response for coccidia counts as sodium butyrate was increased, with the lowest counts being at the intermediate doses. This suggested that butyrate has the …

The Microbiome Of Four North American Nicrophorus Species (Coleoptera: Silphidae): Implications For Parental Care Behavior In Insects, Morgan Olmstead Jan 2018

The Microbiome Of Four North American Nicrophorus Species (Coleoptera: Silphidae): Implications For Parental Care Behavior In Insects, Morgan Olmstead

Master's Theses and Capstones

Nicrophorus (Coleoptera: Silphidae) are a unique genus of beetles in which both parents exhibit parental care. The female parents maintain the carcass resource for the young and directly feed growing larvae, while often the males maintain the carcass and prevent usurpation from congeners and conspecifics in search of the ephemeral resource. The beetles in this genus are known to compete with both animal carcass microbiota and soil microbiota, thus developing several mechanisms to combat these microbes. In this study, four North Americanus Nicrophorus spp. microbiomes were characterized and compared to each other in effort to determine the core Nicrophorus microbiome. …

Polyamines In The Life Of Arabidopsis: Profiling The Expression Of S -Adenosylmethionine Decarboxylase ( Samdc ) Gene Family During Its Life Cycle, Rajtilak Majumdar, Lin Shao, Swathi A. Turlapati, Subhash C. Minocha Dec 2017

Minocha

Faculty Publications

Arabidopsis has 5 paralogs of the S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (SAMDC) gene. Neither their specific role in development nor the role of positive/purifying selection in genetic divergence of this gene family is known. While some data are available on organ-specific expression of AtSAMDC1, AtSAMDC2, AtSAMDC3 and AtSAMDC4, not much is known about their promoters including AtSAMDC5, which is believed to be non-functional. (1) Phylogenetic analysis of the five AtSAMDC genes shows similar divergence pattern for promoters and coding sequences (CDSs), whereas, genetic divergence of 5’UTRs and 3’UTRs was independent of the promoters and CDSs; (2) while AtSAMDC1 and AtSAMDC4 promoters exhibit high …

Carsey Perspectives: Meeting Farmers Where They Are, Increasing Agricultural Sustainability In Malawi Through Business Format Franchising, Ilona Drew, Abraham Demaio, William Maddocks, Fiona Wilson

Carsey Publications

In this perspectives brief, authors Ilona Drew, Abraham DeMaio, Bill Maddocks, and Fiona Wilson discuss a case study that was examined as part of the Social Sector Franchise Initiative (SSFI), a project of the Center for Social Innovation and Enterprise at the University of New Hampshire. This case study profiles Ziweto Enterprises, a social venture in Malawi using franchising methodology to scale its growth. Ziweto’s Agrovet Shops are “one-stop” franchised shops run by recent graduates of veterinary medicine and agricultural colleges that offer diverse veterinary and agricultural products and services. Ziweto’s products and services provide key support to the nation’s …

As Opioid Use Climbs, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Rises In New Hampshire, Kristin Smith

Carsey Publications

In this brief, author Kristin Smith analyzes inpatient hospital discharge data (2012–2015) to assess the prevalence of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in New Hampshire; describes one hospital’s successful program for treating pregnant women and newborns; discusses how comprehensive and coordinated care and home visiting services provided through community based organizations can support new mothers and families; and discusses how a recent change to New Hampshire law intended to support child protection may be having unintended consequences. She reports that in the 10 years from 2005 to 2015, the number of infants diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in New Hampshire …

"Not Very Many Options For The People Who Are Working Here" Rural Housing Challenges Through The Lens Of Two New England Communities, Jess Carson, Marybeth Mattingly Nov 2017

"Not Very Many Options For The People Who Are Working Here" Rural Housing Challenges Through The Lens Of Two New England Communities, Jess Carson, Marybeth Mattingly

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Jessica Carson and Marybeth Mattingly use interview and focus group data to describe some of the ways that restricted rural housing stock affects working families in two rural New England counties, and explore solutions proposed by rural residents and experts to make housing affordable. They report that many rural places are challenged by unaffordable and inadequate housing. In rural communities with scenic amenities, the draw of second-home owners and retirees restricts housing options for local working families. Land use regulations to preserve the scenery in these places limits options for developing affordable housing. The federal safety …

Data Snapshot: Snap Declines Continue In 2016, But Not For Rural Places, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In 2016, 12.4 percent of households reported Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps) receipt, down 0.4 percentage point from 2015. Similar declines in suburbs and cities drove the national decrease, but the 14.8 percent of rural households receiving SNAP did not significantly change between 2015 and 2016.
