Junk Evidence: A Call To Scrutinize Historical Cell Site Location Evidence, Victoria Saxe
Junk Evidence: A Call To Scrutinize Historical Cell Site Location Evidence, Victoria Saxe
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
Historical cell site location information (CSLI) has been offered as objective, scientific location evidence in criminal trials, but is far less precise than the claims it is used to support. Not only is there no way to pinpoint a cellphone’s precise geographic location from historical CSLI, but there are also no known validation or error rates for the methodologies used to collect and analyze this data. A 2019 telecommunications scandal in Denmark revealed gross inadequacies in the cellphone data and software used by law enforcement to analyze this type of evidence. The scandal sent shockwaves through the country’s legal community …
Voiding The Ncaa Show-Cause Penalty: Analysis And Ramifications Of A California Court Decision And Where College Athletics And Show-Cause Penalties Go From Here, Josh Lens
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
In late 2018, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge sent shockwaves through college athletics by ruling that the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions (“COI”) unlawfully restrained now-former University of Southern California (“USC”) assistant football coach Todd McNair’s career when it imposed a “show-cause” penalty on him. Judge Frederick Shaller therefore declared NCAA show-cause penalties void under California employment law.
For decades, the COI has utilized show-cause penalties to punish individuals who break NCAA rules. Reserved for more egregious violations, universities and administrators long treated show-cause orders as scarlet letters, typically terminating or refusing to hire coaches subject to them. That …

Mapping Flat, Deep, And Slow: On The 'Spirit Of Place' In New Cinema History, Jeffrey Klenotic
Mapping Flat, Deep, And Slow: On The 'Spirit Of Place' In New Cinema History, Jeffrey Klenotic
Faculty Publications
This essay engages in a creative, heuristic, and reflexive consideration of the ‘localities’ of cinema audiences by exploring New Cinema History as a place. New Cinema History is conceptualised as a place continually produced in and through its interactions with the heterogeneous multiplicities of situated audiences and experiences of cinema that form the topoi of its landscape of inquiry. In reflecting on how this placialised landscape has been and might be represented, I argue that New Cinema History’s ‘spirit of place’ is most productive when rendered within a ‘splatial’ framework that draws upon practices of flat, deep, and slow mapping …

Two Kinds Of Polar Knowledge, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Two Kinds Of Polar Knowledge, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Faculty Publications
Outreach and communication with the public have substantial value in polar research, in which studies often find changes of global importance that are happening far out of sight from the majority of people living at lower latitudes. Seeking evidence on the effectiveness of outreach programs, the U.S. National Science Foundation sponsored large-scale survey assessments before and after the International Polar Year in 2007/2008. Polar-knowledge questions have subsequently been tested and refined through other nationwide and regional surveys. More than a decade of such work has established that basic but fairly specific knowledge questions, with all answer choices sounding plausible but …

Hydrographic Survey With Autonomous Surface Vessels: A Best Practices Guide, Val Schmidt
Hydrographic Survey With Autonomous Surface Vessels: A Best Practices Guide, Val Schmidt
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Increasingly, hydrographic offices are turning to robotic, unmanned, and “autonomous” surface vehicles (ASVs) to conduct systematic seafloor surveys for hydrographic applications (nautical charting). The term “autonomous” is set in quotes to acknowledge the spectrum of capability of these vessels, which varies from those that are remotely piloted (but possibly either manned or unmanned), to those that have some auto-pilot capability, to those that have the ability to react to their local environment, for example to avoid hazards and other ships while optimizing data collection. Data on which these reactions are based may be provided to them or sensed on their …

Optimism over the New Hampshire economy continues to rebound from lows seen in the spring. However, Republicans' optimism has increased while Democrats remain pessimistic, resulting in a record-high partisan gap. Despite perceptions of a tepid economic outlook for the state and national economies, four in ten Granite Staters anticipate being better off financially in twelve months, matching results seen before the pandemic.

Voting And Attitudes Along The Red Rural–Blue Urban Continuum, Kenneth M. Johnson, Dante Scala
Carsey Publications
Political commentary often divides the nation into two partisan zones, urban and rural, but new analysis demonstrates that the rural–urban gradient is a continuum, not a dichotomy. In this study of the 2018 congressional midterms, authors Kenneth Johnson and Dante Scala confirm their earlier analysis of the 2016 presidential election and demonstrate how voting patterns and political attitudes vary across the spectrum of urban and rural areas.

Silent Voters? Many Trump Supporters Feel Need To Hide Their Support 10/19/2020, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
New Hampshire voters who back Donald Trump are far less likely to express their support publicly than are supporters of Joe Biden. More than 60% of Trump supporters say they will not put a Trump bumper sticker on their car or put a Trump yard sign in front of their house out of fear of vandalism. Biden voters are much less likely to say they fear vandalism because of their support for Biden.
