A Competency-Based Approach Toward Curricular Guidelines For Information Technology Education, Mihaela C. Sabin, Hala Alrumaih, John Impagliazzo
Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship
The Association for Computing Machinery and the IEEE Computer Society have launched a new report titled, Curriculum Guidelines for Baccalaureate Degree Programs in Information Technology (IT2017). This paper discusses significant aspects of the IT2017 report and focuses on competency-driven learning rather than delivery of knowledge in information technology (IT) programs. It also highlights an IT curricular framework that meets the growing demands of a changing technological world in the next decade. Specifically, the paper outlines ways by which baccalaureate IT programs might implement the IT curricular framework and prepare students with knowledge, skills, and dispositions to equip graduates with competencies …

Employees High In Personal Intelligence Differ In Workplace Perceptions And Behavior From Their Colleagues, John D. Mayer, Brendan Lortie, A. T. Panter, David R. Caruso
Employees High In Personal Intelligence Differ In Workplace Perceptions And Behavior From Their Colleagues, John D. Mayer, Brendan Lortie, A. T. Panter, David R. Caruso
Psychology
Personal intelligence (PI) involves the ability to recognize, reason, and use information about personality to understand oneself and other people. Employees in two studies (Ns = 394, 482) completed the Test of Personal Intelligence (TOPI; e.g., Mayer, Panter, & Caruso, 2017a) and assessments of workplace perception and behavior. Higher PI was associated with higher perceived workplace support and lower counterproductive work behavior. These relationships continued to hold after controlling for other key variables. The results indicate the TOPI, although still in research trials, shows promise as a screening device for selecting employees and targeting individuals for training.
Disparities Between Indigenous And Non-Indigenous Educational Attainment: Exploring Factors Related To Low Average School Naplan Scores In The Northern Territory, Rachel Coleman
Master's Theses and Capstones
The Indigenous population is a small minority in most areas of Australia, except the Northern Territory where Indigenous people make up roughly a quarter of the population. Indigenous people have lower educational achievement when compared to non-Indigenous people in Australia, with almost half as many of Indigenous having completed Year 12 or equivalent as non-Indigenous in 2016. The focus of this study was to identify factors that may be influencing the lower educational attainment of Indigenous students. Factors related to increased Indigenous presence in a school were expected to predict lower educational attainment. Full or partial support for some of …
Can Schools Be Reformed By Reforming Assessment?: The Effects Of An Innovative Assessment And Accountability System On Student Achievement Outcomes, Carla Marie Evans
Can Schools Be Reformed By Reforming Assessment?: The Effects Of An Innovative Assessment And Accountability System On Student Achievement Outcomes, Carla Marie Evans
Doctoral Dissertations
The Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 authorizes a pilot program that allows up to seven states to develop innovative assessment and accountability systems. Prior to the official pilot program launch, the U.S. Department of Education approved one pilot program—New Hampshire’s Performance Assessment of Competency Education (PACE). To implement the PACE pilot, the New Hampshire Department of Education received a 2-year waiver (2014-2016) from federal statutory requirements related to state annual achievement testing and was granted additional waivers for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years. The purpose of this study is to investigate the average effect of the PACE pilot …

The Activity Of Becoming A Second-Career Teacher, Michael Hildebrandt
Doctoral Dissertations
This is a study of three second-career teachers’ experiences of self transformation and the processes of socialization and identity formation each undergoes during his or her first three to five years as a full-time teacher. Each narrative offers a means through which to explore how liminal identity is at play during the transition to a new career—an experience that reshapes the experiences and self-understandings of individuals in the process of becoming teachers. The narratives that emerge from in-depth interviews showcase individuals with multi-faceted lives who have engaged in a multitude of personal and professional activities throughout their life course and …
New Model For Bridge Management System (Bms): Bridge Repair Priority Ranking System (Brprs), Case Based Reasoning For Bridge Deterioration, Cost Optimization, And Preservation Strategy, Nasser Yari
Doctoral Dissertations
Most public transportation agencies (Such as, state department of transportations (DOTs) and department of public works for cities and towns.) in the United States are constantly pursuing ways to improve bridge asset management to optimize their use of limited available funds for rehabilitation, replacement, and preventive maintenance. Given the realities of available funding, there is a significant difference between available funds and funds required for maintaining bridges in good condition. The proper preventative maintenance and treatments should be performed at the right time to be cost effective and extend the life of bridges. Neglecting maintenance can cause higher future costs …
Interplanetary Transport Of Solar Energetic Particles, Gen Li
Interplanetary Transport Of Solar Energetic Particles, Gen Li
Doctoral Dissertations
Solar energetic particles (SEPs) are high-energy ions and electrons originating at or near the Sun. The energies of these particles extend from solar wind energies up to ∼10 GeV for ions and ∼100 MeV for electrons. This dissertation employs primarily analytical tools to accomplish three research tasks related to the propagation of SEPs from the lower solar corona to 1 AU: (1) developing a transport model based on the focused transport equation to illustrate and predict the spatial and pitch-angle distribution of the nearly scatter-free beam-like protons observed during the onset phase of the so-called ground level events; (2) constructing …
Performance Based Evaluation Of Cracking In Asphalt Concrete Using Viscoelastic And Fracture Properties, Mirkat Tamire Oshone
Performance Based Evaluation Of Cracking In Asphalt Concrete Using Viscoelastic And Fracture Properties, Mirkat Tamire Oshone
Doctoral Dissertations
Cracking is one of the major distresses encountered in pavements. Pavements that fail prematurely due to cracking precipitate lower ride quality, elevate the chance of road accidents, and cause agencies to spend considerable amount of public funds on pavement maintenance and rehabilitation. As part of the concerted endeavor to ensure high performing pavements, extensive research is being undertaken throughout the United States to develop more effective and efficient performance based materials selection and specification procedures as well as mechanistic-empirical (M-E) methods for pavement cracking performance evaluation. However, agencies have been hesitant to introduce the methods to their specifications, pavement evaluation …
Effect Of Boundary Conditions On The Modal Response Of Intact Surrogate Nuclear Fuel Rods, Blaise Nganyi Imbembe
Effect Of Boundary Conditions On The Modal Response Of Intact Surrogate Nuclear Fuel Rods, Blaise Nganyi Imbembe
Master's Theses and Capstones
The disposal of nuclear waste is a safety matter that requires in-depth knowledge of the behavior of spent nuclear fuel assemblies. To reliably transport spent nuclear fuels, it is necessary to understand their dynamic response, especially when material degradation is present. As contribution to this effort, joint experimental and numerical analyses with Abaqus have been conducted in this study to investigate the effect of boundary conditions on the modal frequencies of intact (un-irradiated) surrogate nuclear fuel rods. To do so, a single cell spacer, a simplified version of the actual fuel rod support (spacer grid), was modeled, designed and fabricated. …

Can Artificial Intelligence Alleviate Resource Scarcity?, Andrew Ware
Can Artificial Intelligence Alleviate Resource Scarcity?, Andrew Ware
Inquiry Journal 2018
During summer 2017, I explored the implications of the potential application of artificial intelligence (AI) to resource management at the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Alongside my mentor, Dr. Simon Beard, I sought to determine the most noteworthy risks and benefits associated with developing AI that could offer agricultural guidance and that could someday offer insight into more efficient, effective, and equitable resource distribution. My research, funded by a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) grant, involved discussing AI-related issues in the context of resource scarcity with academics and …
Experiments And Analysis Of Aluminum Tube Hydroforming, Adam Ryan Kaplan
Experiments And Analysis Of Aluminum Tube Hydroforming, Adam Ryan Kaplan
Master's Theses and Capstones
This is a thesis on the development of an experimental table-top sized tube hydroforming machine at the University of New Hampshire. This thesis documents the design of the machine and the exploration of the forming envelope of the device via finite element modeling of the forming process. Several experiments on Al-6061-T4 tubes were used to evaluate the plastic behavior and strain limits of the tube in the axial and circumferential (hoop) directions. Two of these material tests, the uniaxial tension test and the ring hoop tension tests, were simulated with finite element models to refine the Al-6061-T4 plasticity curve, including …

Rediscovering Antitrust's Lost Values, Thomas J. Horton
Rediscovering Antitrust's Lost Values, Thomas J. Horton
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
This Article traces Congress’s consistent balancing and blending of social, political, moral, and economic values and objectives over the course of nearly 120 years of antitrust legislation. As a starting point, a plethora of outstanding and insightful scholarship analyzing Congress’s objectives in passing the Sherman, Clayton, and FTC Acts already exists. Less studied, however, has been Congress’s more recent legislation, including the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 (HSR Act), and the National Cooperative Production Amendments of 1993 and 2004, to the National Cooperative Research Act of 1984 (NCRPA). By analyzing the legislative histories of such antitrust legislation in detail, …

Forecasting the geomagnetic effects of solar storms, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), is currently severely limited by our inability to predict the magnetic field configuration in the CME magnetic core and by observational effects of a single spacecraft trajectory through its 3-D structure. CME magnetic flux ropes can lead to continuous forcing of the energy input to the Earth's magnetosphere by strong and steady southward-pointing magnetic fields. Here we demonstrate in a proof-of-concept way a new approach to predict the southward field Bz in a CME flux rope. It combines a novel semiempirical model of CME flux rope magnetic …
