Climate-Change Views Of New Hampshire Primary Voters, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Climate-Change Views Of New Hampshire Primary Voters, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Carsey Publications
In this brief, author Lawrence Hamilton discusses the results of an April 2019 Granite State Poll conducted by the UNH Survey Center that asked 549 New Hampshire residents whether they planned to vote in the state’s 2020 presidential primary election and, if so, which candidate they favored. The survey also asked residents about their views on climate change. Hamilton reports that regardless of their candidate preferences, prospective voters in the New Hampshire Democratic primary agree with the scientific consensus that humans are changing Earth’s climate. Three-quarters of Republican primary voters favor President Trump, and most in this group do not …

Land models are often used to simulate terrestrial responses to future environmental changes, but these models are not commonly evaluated with data from experimental manipulations. Results from experimental manipulations can identify and evaluate model assumptions that are consistent with appropriate ecosystem responses to future environmental change. We conducted simulations using three coupled carbon-nitrogen versions of the Community Land Model (CLM, versions 4, 4.5, and—the newly developed—5), and compared the simulated response to nitrogen (N) and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) enrichment with meta-analyses of observations from similar experimental manipulations. In control simulations, successive versions of CLM showed a poleward increase in …

Agricultural systems are increasingly managed for improving soil carbon (C) accumulation. However, there are limits to C returns in agricultural systems that constrain soil C accumulation capacity. Increasing the efficiency of how soil microbes process C is gaining interest as an important management strategy for increasing soil C and is a key feature of soil C dynamics in many new microbial-explicit models. A higher microbial C use efficiency (CUE) may increase C storage while reducing C system losses and is a fundamental trait affecting community assembly dynamics and nutrient cycling. However, the numerous ecological unknowns influencing CUE limit our ability …

Soil carbon models typically scale decomposition linearly with soil carbon (C) concentration, but this linear relationship has not been experimentally verified. Here we investigated the underlying biogeochemical mechanisms controlling the relationships between soil C concentration and decomposition rates. We incubated a soil/sand mixture with increasing amounts of finely ground plant residue in the laboratory at constant temperature and moisture for 63 days. The plant residues were rye (Secale cereale, C/N ratio of 23) and wheat straw (Triticum spp., C/N ratio of 109) at seven soil C concentrations ranging from 0.38 to 2.99%. We measured soil respiration, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) …

Losses Of Mineral Soil Carbon Largely Offset Biomass Accumulation Fifteen Years After Whole-Tree Harvest In A Northern Hardwood Forest, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Steven P. Hamburg, Chris E. Johnson, Jonathan Sanderman

Changes in soil carbon stocks following forest harvest can be an important component of ecosystem and landscape-scale C budgets in systems managed for bioenergy or carbon-trading markets. However, these changes are characterized less often and with less certainty than easier-to-measure aboveground stocks. We sampled soils prior to the whole-tree harvest of Watershed 5 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in 1983, and again in years 3, 8, and 15 following harvest. The repeated measures of total soil C in this stand show no net change in the O horizon over 15 years, though mixing with the mineral soil reduced observed …
A Miniaturized Phased Array Antenna Based On Novel Switch Line Phase Shifter Module, Rudra Lal Timsina
A Miniaturized Phased Array Antenna Based On Novel Switch Line Phase Shifter Module, Rudra Lal Timsina
Master's Theses and Capstones
A miniaturized phased array antenna with a uniquely designed switch line phase shifter to obtain a steerable beam pattern is presented. A 1x4 phased array patch antenna is designed at 5 GHz using Rogers dielectric material with a relative permittivity of 6.15 and a thickness of 1.524 mm. Each element of the probe fed PAA are connected to a phase shifter on a different dielectric substrate. The phase shifter has four equal length microstrip lines placed in a circular fashion around a via that connects to the antenna at the center. The addition of each microstrip line is designed to …
Control Strategy Of Multirotor Platform Under Nominal And Fault Conditions Using A Dual-Loop Control Scheme Used For Earth-Based Spacecraft Control Testing, Sital Khatiwada
Master's Theses and Capstones
Over the last decade, autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have seen increased usage in industrial, defense, research, and academic applications. Specific attention is given to multirotor platforms due to their high maneuverability, utility, and accessibility. As such, multirotors are often utilized in a variety of operating conditions such as populated areas, hazardous environments, inclement weather, etc. In this study, the effectiveness of multirotor platforms, specifically quadrotors, to behave as Earth-based satellite test platforms is discussed. Additionally, due to concerns over system operations under such circumstances, it becomes critical that multirotors are capable of operation despite experiencing undesired conditions and collisions …
The Storm Time Response Of The Inner Magnetosphere During Coronal Mass Ejection And Corotating Interaction Region Driven Storms, Samuel Bingham
The Storm Time Response Of The Inner Magnetosphere During Coronal Mass Ejection And Corotating Interaction Region Driven Storms, Samuel Bingham
Doctoral Dissertations
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and corotating interaction regions (CIRs) are the most common drivers of geomagnetic storms, influencing the dynamics of the inner magnetosphere and the response of the radiation belts. The main outer radiation belt acceleration mechanisms are inward radial diffusion and local acceleration by chorus waves, while magnetopause shadowing and by pitch angle scattering by electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves and other wave modes are the main true loss mechanisms. The link between these mechanisms and the solar interplanetary structures is the ring current response to these drivers. The different characteristics of the two solar wind drivers, CMEs …
Pseudometrics, The Complex Of Ultrametrics, And Iterated Cycle Structures, Eric Robert Kehoe
Pseudometrics, The Complex Of Ultrametrics, And Iterated Cycle Structures, Eric Robert Kehoe
Doctoral Dissertations
Every set X, finite of cardinality n say, carries a set M(X) of all possible pseudometrics. It is well known that M(X) forms a convex polyhedral cone whose faces correspond to triangle inequalities. Every point in a convex cone can be expressed as a conical sum of its extreme rays, hence the interest around discovering and classifying such rays. We shall give examples of extreme rays for M(X) exhibiting all integral edge lengths up to half the cardinality of X. By intersecting the cone with the unit cube we obtain the convex polytope of bounded-by-one pseudometrics BM(X). Analogous to extreme …
Asymptotic And Spectral Analysis Of The Bending-Torsion Vibration Model With Nondissipative Boundary Conditions, Laszlo Peter Kindrat
Asymptotic And Spectral Analysis Of The Bending-Torsion Vibration Model With Nondissipative Boundary Conditions, Laszlo Peter Kindrat
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is concerned with mathematical results on the initial boundary-value problem for the coupled bending-torsion vibration model, which is important in different areas of engineering sciences (e.g. design of bridges and tall buildings, aerospace engineering, etc.). Mathematically, the model is given by a system of two hyperbolic partial differential equations equipped with a 3-parameter family of nonselfadjoint (linear feedback type) boundary conditions. The system is represented as a first-order-in-time evolution equation in state space, a Hilbert space of 4-component Cauchy-data. It is shown that the dynamics generator is a nonselfadjoint matrix differential operator with a compact resolvent. The spectral …
Beurling Theorems And Approximate Equivalence In Von Neumann Algebras, Wenjing Liu
Beurling Theorems And Approximate Equivalence In Von Neumann Algebras, Wenjing Liu
Doctoral Dissertations
The main part of the thesis relates to generalized Beurling-Helson-Lowdenslager theorems on the unit disk, in multiply connected domains, and in finite von Neumann algebras. I have also obtained results on approximate unitary equivalence of representations of separable ASH C*-algebras in a semifinite von Neumann algebra, extending results of D. Voiculescu. In the last part of the thesis, I give two characterizations of tracially nuclear C*-algebras.
Experimental Investigations Of Thermal Pulsatile Boundary Layer Flow, Drummond Biles
Experimental Investigations Of Thermal Pulsatile Boundary Layer Flow, Drummond Biles
Doctoral Dissertations
The need to reliably analyze, predict, and control the transport of mass, momentum, and energy in turbulent boundary layers is critically important across a broad spectrum of technological applications and scientific disciplines. While there has been extensive–and continuing– research investigating laboratory-scale canonical wall-bounded flows, beyond the scope of these well-studied flows there exists a broad range of application relevant flows that are far less studied. The theme of this dissertation research is to study a non canonical flow, specifically to study coupled momentum and thermal transport in pulsatile boundary layer flows.
The primary contributions of the present work are (1) …
General Reflexivity For Absolutely Convex Sets, Mahtab Lak
General Reflexivity For Absolutely Convex Sets, Mahtab Lak
Doctoral Dissertations
In 1994 D. Hadwin introduced the notion of a reflexivity triple (X,Y,E) and defined a very general notion of reflexivity, called
E-reflexivity, for a linear subspace of the vector space X. Hadwin's general version included many special versions (algebraic reflexivity,
topological reflexivity, approximate reflexivity, hyperreflexivity) that had been studied for linear spaces of linear transformations on a vector space or Hilbert space. In this thesis we extend Hadwin's notion and define and study
the abstract notion of reflexivity for an absolutely convex subset of X. We have extended many of Hadwin's results and obtained some new ones. We have also …
Investigation Into The Flow Physics Of Large Experimental Offshore Wind Farms In A Turbulent Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel, John James Turner
Investigation Into The Flow Physics Of Large Experimental Offshore Wind Farms In A Turbulent Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel, John James Turner
Doctoral Dissertations
Large offshore wind turbine array power plants will soon be appearing along the United States' eastern seaboard. With recent advances in technology, turbines have been growing in diameter and arrays have been growing in scale, but not without technical challenges. There exist knowledge gaps in the fluid dynamics that govern the interaction of the incoming atmospheric boundary layer with the wakes of the turbines and the sequential wake-wake interactions that result in an unavoidable decreased bulk power production compared to predicted capacity from the array.
Wind farm experiments were conducted with scale model wind turbines in a high Reynolds number …
Design, Mechanical Experiments And Modeling On A New Family Of 3d Printed Hybrid Chiral Mechanical Metamaterials With Negative Poisson’S Ratio, Yunyao Jiang
Doctoral Dissertations
Emerging in the last decade, mechanical metamaterials have many engineering advantages due to unusual mechanical properties. Auxetic (with negative Poisson’s ratio) mechanical metamaterials, as an important family of these materials, have broad engineering applications including the design of new materials with increased indentation resistance, shear resistance, energy absorption capability and variable permeability.
Chiral auxetic mechanical metamaterial is a sub-family of the auxetic material, which is with a geometry that is non-superposable on its mirror image. Compared to symmetric auxetic materials, such as re-entrant honeycombs or periodic porous materials, which have random handedness after instability, chiral materials have deterministic handedness and …
Households' Preferences And Willingness To Pay For Hydrological Services In Veracruz, Mexico, Ian Mcginnis
Households' Preferences And Willingness To Pay For Hydrological Services In Veracruz, Mexico, Ian Mcginnis
Master's Theses and Capstones
Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) are transfer payments from governing bodies, households, firms, or non-governmental organizations to incentivize natural resource owners and managers to carry out environmental conservation efforts that promote the provision of ecosystem services. PES programs targeting reduction of deforestation have gained popularity due to the extensive ecosystem services of forests including carbon storage, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, and the provision of hydrological services (HS), the ecosystem services that provide benefits such as water quality improvement, water damage mitigation, and non-use value.
There is evidence in the literature that PES programs, while theoretically beneficial, face issues with long-term financial …
Feature Selection By Singular Value Decomposition For Reinforcement Learning, Bahram Behzadian
Feature Selection By Singular Value Decomposition For Reinforcement Learning, Bahram Behzadian
Master's Theses and Capstones
Solving reinforcement learning problems using value function approximation requires having good state features, but constructing them manually is often difficult or impossible. We propose Fast Feature Selection (FFS), a new method for automatically constructing good features in problems with high-dimensional state spaces but low-rank dynamics. Such problems are common when, for example, controlling simple dynamic systems using direct visual observations with states represented by raw images. FFS relies on domain samples and singular value decomposition to construct features that can be used to approximate the optimal value function well. Compared with earlier methods, such as LFD, FFS is simpler and …
Infiltration Characteristics Of Subsurface Gravel Filtration Systems For Stormwater Management, Ethan Ely
Infiltration Characteristics Of Subsurface Gravel Filtration Systems For Stormwater Management, Ethan Ely
Master's Theses and Capstones
Increased stormwater runoff due to the construction of impervious surfaces is a major issue in urban environments, causing combined sewer overflows, erosion in natural waterways, and damage to infrastructure. Subsurface gravel filter (SGF) system, a type of Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI), can effectively reduce stormwater runoff volumes and peak flows by infiltrating runoff. Current GSI design guidelines require that these systems be statically sized to store the 24-hour storm depth equaled or not exceeded approximately 90% of the days with rainfall. Across the United States, this design depth is roughly equal to 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) of rainfall. This sizing …
