Physics Experiences And Calculus: How Students Use Physics To Construct Meaningful Conceptualizations Of Calculus Concepts In An Interdisciplinary Calculus /Physics Course, Karen Ann Marrongelle

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the manner by which students enrolled in an integrated Calculus/Physics course use their understanding of physics to inform their conceptualizations of calculus concepts. This study utilized a multiple case study design with analysis by and across cases. The cases represent eight first year students in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of New Hampshire who enrolled in an integrated calculus/physics program. Data was gathered in a three-part process: (1) Semi-structured task-based interviews, (2) Participant-observation in the calculus/physics course, and (3) Obtaining copies of students' in-class notes, in-class activities, …

Numerical Simulation Of Acoustic Waves In A Rectangular Chamber, Normah Mohd. Ghazali Jan 2001

Numerical Simulation Of Acoustic Waves In A Rectangular Chamber, Normah Mohd. Ghazali

Doctoral Dissertations

Numerical simulation of acoustic waves in a closed two-dimensional rectangular chamber is considered. The waves are generated by a membrane or piston boundary condition on one wall. The simulations are performed through many acoustic cycles. A stack of heat exchanger plates are sometimes included. The study is motivated by thermoacoustic refrigeration, a phenomena which uses soundwaves in a chamber to achieve a cooling effect.

The present study treats the flow numerically. The governing equations are the viscous compressible Navier-Stokes system, assuming a perfect gas. The numerical method employs a finite difference spatial discretization and semi-implicit time-marching procedure. Verification is accomplished …

A Study Of Mathematics Course Sequence And Student Performance In Mathematics In A Block Scheduled High School, John Harvell Moody Jan 2001

A Study Of Mathematics Course Sequence And Student Performance In Mathematics In A Block Scheduled High School, John Harvell Moody

Doctoral Dissertations

The 1983 study of the condition of American Education, A Nation at Risk, brought a significant amount of attention to the way in which schools provided students with the skills necessary to be productive citizens. Many of the recommendations contained in A Nation at Risk focused on the perceived poor performance of American students when compared to their counterparts worldwide. The year after publication of A Nation at Risk, the National Commission on Time and Learning published Prisoners of Time, a report that called for the establishment of high academic standards for students and a major restructuring of the school …

Learning And Understanding In Abstract Algebra, Bradford Reed Findell Jan 2001

Learning And Understanding In Abstract Algebra, Bradford Reed Findell

Doctoral Dissertations

Students' learning and understanding in an undergraduate abstract algebra class were described using Tall and Vinner's notion of a concept image, which is the entire cognitive structure associated with a concept, including examples, nonexamples, definitions, representations, and results. Prominent features and components of students' concept images were identified for concepts of elementary group theory, including group, subgroup, isomorphism, coset, and quotient group.

Analysis of interviews and written work from five students provided insight into their concept images, revealing ways they understood the concepts. Because many issues were related to students' uses of language and notation, the analysis was essentially semiotic, …

On Parsing The Within-Stand Variability In Stand Density Measures, Mark J. Ducey, Bruce C. Larson Jan 2001

On Parsing The Within-Stand Variability In Stand Density Measures, Mark J. Ducey, Bruce C. Larson

Faculty Publications

A variety of stand-density measures have become popular in North America for diagnosing thinning needs, predicting thinning outcomes, and to an increasing degree, regulating legal harvesting behavior. The statistical reliability of these measures is seldom included in the analysis, but the confidence limits of the measures must be considered if they are used in these ways.  These indices are designed to measure average stocking, but conventional approaches do not address issues of stand heterogeneity.  If the variability of the sample estimates is calculated in order to determine statistical reliability, it is then tempting to use that variability to address two …

Physiography And Late Quaternary-Holocene Processes Of Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf Off Mississippi And Alabama, James V. Gardner, Peter Dartnell, Kenneth J. Sulak, Brian R. Calder, Laurent Hellequin Jan 2001

Physiography And Late Quaternary-Holocene Processes Of Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf Off Mississippi And Alabama, James V. Gardner, Peter Dartnell, Kenneth J. Sulak, Brian R. Calder, Laurent Hellequin

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

High-resolution multibeam mapping of the mid- and outer continental shelf and upper slope off Mississippi and Alabama reveals a complex bathymetry that reflects conditions during the last eustatic rise and the present high stand of sea level. The most prominent bathymetric features are pinnacles and hardgrounds that are scattered throughout the area. These features generally stand <10 m above the surrounding seafloor, cover large areas, and display a variety of morphologies. Almost all the reef pinnacles and hardgrounds have zones of high acoustic backscatter on their summits and on the seafloor immediately adjacent to their southwest walls. In addition, they also have erosional moats on the seafloor to the southwest. Large fields of bedforms are scattered throughout the mapped area. The asymmetries and orientations of the bedforms suggest that they were formed by excursions of the northeast-flowing Loop Current. In contrast, the pervasive ponding of sediment on the northeast sides of bathymetric highs indicates that one of the predominant directions of sediment transport has been to the south and southwest. The shelf break is a zone of numerous landslides of various sizes and complexities. The morphology of several landslide scars indicates that some of the failures occurred recently. One large reef-capped salt dome was mapped in the area, surrounded by a large field of pock-marks. Fields of pockmarks are also scattered on the shelf. The growth and demise of the reefs are related to the fluctuating transgression of eustatic sea level during the last deglaciation. Two episodes of reef drowning are correlated with the increased rates of sea-level rise during documented melt-water pulses; the first occurred from 14.8 to 14.2 ka and the second from 11.8 to 11.2 ka. Rates of sea-level rise exceeded the maximum growth rate of hermatypic corals only during these two intervals since the last glacial maximum and thus drowned the coral communities.

Modeling High-Frequency Seafloor Backscattering Of Gassy Sediments: The Eel River Margin Case, Luciano E. Fonseca, Larry A. Mayer Dec 2000

Modeling High-Frequency Seafloor Backscattering Of Gassy Sediments: The Eel River Margin Case, Luciano E. Fonseca, Larry A. Mayer

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Models of acoustic backscatter typically take into account two different processes: interface scattering and volume scattering. What happens to these two contributions when the sediment is charged with gas bubbles? For the interface backscatter contribution we adopted the model developed by Jackson et al. (1986), but added modifications to accommodate gas bubbles, which when present, even in very small quantities, can dominate the acoustic characteristics of the sediment. The model parameters that are affected by gas content are the density ratio, the sound speed ratio and the loss parameter. To a first approximation, the model roughness parameters are not influenced …

Space Science Center

We report on recent three-dimensional imaging performance and detection efficiency measurements obtained with 5 mm thick prototype CdZnTe detectors fabricated with orthogonal coplanar anode strips. In previous work, we have shown that detectors fabricated using this design achieve both very good energy resolution and sub-millimeter spatial resolution with fewer electronic channels than are required for pixel detectors. As electron-only devices, like pixel detectors, coplanar anode strip detectors can be fabricated in the thickness required to be effective imagers for photons with energies in excess of 500 keV. Unlike conventional double-sided strip detectors, the coplanar anode strip detectors require segmented contacts …

Analog Processing Of Signals From A Czt Strip Detector With Orthogonal Coplanar Anodes, K Larson, V T. Jordanov, Mark L. Mcconnell, John R. Macri, James M. Ryan, A Drake, L A. Hamel, O Tousignant

Space Science Center

We present the requirements, design, and performance of an analog circuit for processing the non-collecting anode strip signals from a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) strip detector with orthogonal coplanar anodes. Detector signal simulations and measurements with a prototype are used to define the range of signal characteristics as a function of location of the gamma interaction in the detector. The signals from the non- collecting anode strip electrodes are used to define two of the three spatial coordinates including the depth of interaction, the z dimension. Analog signal processing options are discussed. A circuit to process the signals from the …

Recent measurements have demonstrated that sunlight irradiation of snow results in the release of significant amounts of gas phase NOx (NO+NO2). We report here the results of a series of experiments designed to test the hypothesis that the observed NOx production is the result of nitrate photolysis. Snow produced from deionized water with and without the addition of nitrate was exposed to natural sunlight in an outdoor flow chamber. While NOx release from snow produced without added NO−3 was minimal, the addition of 100 µM NO−3resulted in the release …

Interactive 3-D Visualization: A Tool For Seafloor Navigation, Exploration, And Engineering, Larry A. Mayer, Mark Paton, Lindsay Gee, James V. Gardner, Colin Ware

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Recent years have seen remarkable advances in sonar technology, positioning capabilities, and computer processing power that have revolutionized the way we image the seafloor. The massive amounts of data produced by these systems present many challenges but also offer tremendous opportunities in terms of visualization and analysis. We have developed a suite of interactive 3-D visualization and exploration tools specifically designed to facilitate the interpretation and analysis of very large (10's to 100's of megabytes), complex, multi-component spatial data sets. If properly georeferenced and treated, these complex data sets can be presented in a natural and intuitive manner that allows …

Release Of No(X) From Sunlight-Irradiated Midlatitude Snow, R E. Honrath, Matthew C. Peterson, M P. Dziobak, Jack E. Dibb, Matthew Arsenault, S A. Green

Earth Sciences

Photochemical production and release of gas-phase NO(x) (NO + NO2) from the natural snowpack at a remote site in northern Michigan were investigated during the Snow Nitrogen and Oxidants in Winter study in January 1999. Snow was collected in an open 34 L chamber, which was then sealed with a transparent Teflon cover and used as an outdoor flow and reaction chamber. Significant increases in NO(x) mixing ratio were observed in synthetic and ambient air pulled through the sunlit chamber. [NO(x)] enhancements were correlated to ultraviolet sunlight intensity, reaching ~300 pptv under partially overcast midday, mid-winter conditions. These findings are …

Kinetic Energy Release In Electron-Induced Decay Reactions Of Molecular Ions: C3h8+ And C3h7+, S. Matt, Olof E. Echt, A. Stamatovic, T. D. Mark Jul 2000

Kinetic Energy Release In Electron-Induced Decay Reactions Of Molecular Ions: C3h8+ And C3h7+, S. Matt, Olof E. Echt, A. Stamatovic, T. D. Mark

Physics & Astronomy

We have measured the kinetic energy release (KER) distributions for electron-induced dissociation of mass-selected molecular parent and fragment ions of propane. They are compared with distributions determined for spontaneous (metastable) dissociation. The average KER for induced dissociation of C3H8+ into C3H7+ is 13.2 +/- 1.2 meV, about 42% larger than for the spontaneous reaction. This large difference is attributed to the dramatically reduced time at which the induced reaction can be sampled. In contrast, the KER for dissociation of C3H7+ into C3H5+, which is characterized by a large reverse activation energy, is hardly affected by the experimental time scale. (C) …
