A System Model For The Effect Of Polarization Mode Dispersion On Digital Modulated Optical Signals In Single Mode Fibers, Abhijit Shriram Chitambar Jan 2009

A System Model For The Effect Of Polarization Mode Dispersion On Digital Modulated Optical Signals In Single Mode Fibers, Abhijit Shriram Chitambar

Doctoral Dissertations

A comprehensive systems model that retains the discrete nature of the output delay distribution in order to accurately characterize the pulse broadening due to Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) is developed in this thesis. PMD in optical channels has been a critical factor limiting high-speed data transmission over long distances in optical networks. PMD is a source of Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) and its impact increases with the transmission data rate. Since economical adaptive compensation schemes are currently unavailable, it is essential to characterize this impairment to completely understand its impact and develop effective countermeasures. An incremental approach has been developed …

Excavating The Landscapes Of American Literature: Archaeology, Antiquarianism, And The Landscape In American Women's Writing, 1820--1890, Christina Healey Jan 2009

Excavating The Landscapes Of American Literature: Archaeology, Antiquarianism, And The Landscape In American Women's Writing, 1820--1890, Christina Healey

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the ways that women writers made use of the discourses of antiquarianism and archaeology between the years 1820 and 1890. Focusing especially upon the writings of Sarah Josepha Hale, Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Susan Fenimore Cooper, Celia Thaxter, and Constance Fenimore Woolson, the project examines depictions of artifacts, ruins, relics, and other antiquities in literary landscapes. Each of these women presents a unique way of knowing the world that is manifested in the ways their texts join different ways of understanding the landscape, its occupants, the artifacts it contains, its strata and geological history, and its aesthetic value. …

Genetic Variation Within The Daphnia Pulex Genome, Abraham Eaton Tucker Jan 2009

Genetic Variation Within The Daphnia Pulex Genome, Abraham Eaton Tucker

Doctoral Dissertations

Genetic variation within the diploid Daphnia pulex genome was examined using a high quality de novo assembly and shotgun reads from two distinct D. pulex clones. Patterns of variation and divergence at single nucleotides were examined in physical and functional regions of the genome using comparative assembly output and available annotations. Additionally, mitochondrial genomes of the same D. pulex clones were assembled and compared for patterns of divergence, and substitutional biases. Intron presence/absence polymorphisms were identified computationally and verified experimentally. Finally, gene duplicate demographics were examined for patterns of divergence and estimates of gene birth rates.

Wavelet Regression With Long Memory Infinite Moving Average Errors, Juan Liu Jan 2009

Wavelet Regression With Long Memory Infinite Moving Average Errors, Juan Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

For more than a decade there has been great interest in wavelets and wavelet-based methods. Among the most successful applications of wavelets is nonparametric statistical estimation, following the pioneering work of Donoho and Johnstone (1994, 1995) and Donoho et al. (1995). In this thesis, we consider the wavelet-based estimators of the mean regression function with long memory infinite moving average errors, and investigate the rates of convergence of estimators based on thresholding of empirical wavelet coefficients. We show that these estimators achieve nearly optimal minimax convergence rates within a logarithmic term over a large class of non-smooth functions that involve …

Invariant Frechet Algebras On Bounded Symmetric Domains, Oleg Eroshkin Jan 2009

Invariant Frechet Algebras On Bounded Symmetric Domains, Oleg Eroshkin

Doctoral Dissertations

Let D be a bounded domain in the complex vector space Cn . We say that D is symmetric iff, given any two points p, q ∈ D, there is a biholomorphism &phis;, which interchanges p and q. These domains were classified abstractly by Elie Cartan in his general study of symmetric spaces, and were canonically realized in Cn by Harish-Chandra. They include polydisks and Siegel domains.

Let D be a bounded symmetric domain in Cn , and G be the largest connected group of biholomorphic automorphisms of D. The algebra C( D) of all continuous (not necessarily bounded) complex-valued …

Mathematics Of Double-Walled Carbon Nanotube Model: Asymptotic Spectral And Stability Analysis, Miriam Rojas-Arenaza Jan 2009

Mathematics Of Double-Walled Carbon Nanotube Model: Asymptotic Spectral And Stability Analysis, Miriam Rojas-Arenaza

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is devoted to analytical study of a contemporary model of a double-walled carbon nano-tube. Carbon nano-tubes have been considered outstanding candidates to innovate and to promote emerging technologies, due to their remarkable chemical, mechanical, and physical properties. For these technologies, there is a need to develop mathematical models that capture the nature of the responses of these structures under a variety of physical conditions. Developing these models is challenging because the behavior lies on the borderline between classical and quantum systems. The main goal of the present dissertation is to prove mathematically rigorous results concerning the vibrational behavior …

Kadison -Singer Algebras With Applications To Von Neumann Algebras, Mohan Ravichandran Jan 2009

Kadison -Singer Algebras With Applications To Von Neumann Algebras, Mohan Ravichandran

Doctoral Dissertations

I develop the theory of Kadison-Singer algebras, introduced recently by Ge and Yuan. I prove basic structure theorems, construct several new examples and explore connections to other areas of operator algebras. In chapter 1, I survey those aspects of the theory of non-selfadjoint algebras that are relevant to this work. In chapter 2, I define Kadison-Singer algebras and give different proofs of results of Ge-Yuan, which will be further extended in the last chapter. In chapter 3, I analyse in detail a class of elementary Kadison-Singer algebras that contain Hinfinity and describe their lattices of projections. In chapter 4, I …

Biologically Inspired Feature Extraction For Rotation And Scale Tolerant Pattern Analysis, Dragan Vidacic Jan 2009

Biologically Inspired Feature Extraction For Rotation And Scale Tolerant Pattern Analysis, Dragan Vidacic

Doctoral Dissertations

Biologically motivated information processing has been an important area of scientific research for decades. The central topic addressed in this dissertation is utilization of lateral inhibition and more generally, linear networks with recurrent connectivity along with complex-log conformal mapping in machine based implementations of information encoding, feature extraction and pattern recognition. The reasoning behind and method for spatially uniform implementation of inhibitory/excitatory network model in the framework of non-uniform log-polar transform is presented. For the space invariant connectivity model characterized by Topelitz-Block-Toeplitz matrix, the overall network response is obtained without matrix inverse operations providing the connection matrix generating function is …

Kadison -Singer Algebras, Wei Yuan Jan 2009

Kadison -Singer Algebras, Wei Yuan

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, we defined a new class of non selfadjoint operator algebras---Kadison-Singer algebras or KS-algebras for simplicity. These algebras combine triangularity, reflexivity and von Neumann algebra property into one consideration. Generally speaking, KS-algebras are reflexive, maximal triangular with respect to its "diagonal subalgebra". Many selfadjoint features are preserved in them and concepts can be borrowed directly from the theory of von Neumann algebras. In fact, a more direct connection of KS-algebras and von Neumann algebras is through the lattice of invariant projections of a KS-algebra. The lattice is reflexive and "minimally generating" in the sense that it generates the …

The Process Of Making Meaning: The Interplay Between Teachers' Knowledge Of Mathematical Proofs And Their Classroom Practices, Megan Paddack Jan 2009

The Process Of Making Meaning: The Interplay Between Teachers' Knowledge Of Mathematical Proofs And Their Classroom Practices, Megan Paddack

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe how middle school mathematics teachers make meaning of proofs and the process of proving in the context of their classroom practices. A framework of making meaning, created by the researcher, guided the data collection and analysis phases of the study. This framework describes the five central aspects of the process of making meaning: knowledge, beliefs, utilization of knowledge, interconnections of practice and knowledge, and making sense of past knowledge and current experiences. The utilization of a qualitative research methodology that combined ethnographic fieldwork and discourse analysis allowed the researcher to …

Flow Within The Engineering Pipeline: Motivation Of High -Achieving Students During The High School To College Transition, Nick Tatar Jan 2009

Flow Within The Engineering Pipeline: Motivation Of High -Achieving Students During The High School To College Transition, Nick Tatar

Doctoral Dissertations

Student motivation is often related to perceptions of the learning environment, making the transition from high school to college a critical period as students adjust to new learning environments. It is also a critical time for engineering programs as high-achieving students who drop out of engineering during this period are not likely to be replaced.

A web-based survey including nine scales assessing personal motivation, perceived classroom goal structures, and academic related beliefs and behaviors was administered to eighty-eight students who participated at two time points---the end of senior year in high school and the end of the first semester in …

Tracking Diet And Movement Of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus Thynnus) Using Carbon And Nitrogen Stable Isotopes, John Logan Jan 2009

Tracking Diet And Movement Of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus Thynnus) Using Carbon And Nitrogen Stable Isotopes, John Logan

Doctoral Dissertations

Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT; Thunnus thynnus) are important top predators in pelagic ecosystems. Understanding their diet and movements is necessary for proper management, but existing methods are costly and logistically challenging. Naturally occurring stable isotopes have been used to study diet and movement in many aquatic ecosystems and offer a novel approach for studying these large pelagic fishes.

Lipids, which have lower carbon isotope values than protein, can affect isotope analyses of bulk tissue. Both chemical and mathematical corrections were used to address lipid effects on ABFT and the prey. All chemical extraction methods altered nitrogen isotope values. Mathematical corrections …

Chemical Sensors Based On Swellable Polymer Microparticles And Molecular Imprinted Polymers, John Ong'any Osambo Jan 2009

Chemical Sensors Based On Swellable Polymer Microparticles And Molecular Imprinted Polymers, John Ong'any Osambo

Doctoral Dissertations

Swellable thermoresponsive and lightly cross-linked polymer microparticles were prepared for the development of chemical sensors for various target analytes. The swelling and shrinking of the polymer particles as a function of concentration of target analytes has been investigated using turbidity and fluorescence measurements at suitable pH values.

Chemical sensors that respond to transition metal ions such as Cu 2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, and Pb2+ were prepared by copolymerizing N-Isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) with ligands such as; 2,2'-acylamidodiacetic acid (AIDA), dibutyl-2,2'-(3 vinylphenylazanediyl) diacetate (DVPAA), N-((4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridin-4yl)methyl)-N-propylacrylamide (NMPPAAm), and N,N-bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)prop-2-en-1-amine (NBPMPA). The microparticles were either labeled with 9-vinylanthracene (9-VA)/2-Naphthylmethacrylate (2-NMA), or fluorescein o-acrylate/methacryloxethyl thiocarbonyl rhodamine B …

Predicting Inclusive Teaching Using The Transtheoretical Model Of Behavior Change And The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Heather D. Hussey Jan 2009

Predicting Inclusive Teaching Using The Transtheoretical Model Of Behavior Change And The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Heather D. Hussey

Doctoral Dissertations

The diversity related materials in many university and college courses do not reflect the extent of diversity in society (Banks, 2002). Attempts to diversify curriculum have been made (Montgomery, 2001; Richards, Brown, & Forde, 2007), but further work is needed to prepare students to thrive in a culturally diverse society (Banks, 2002; Marshall, 2002). Research regarding faculty views toward diversity on campus and in the curriculum is limited (Brunner, 2006; Piland, Hess, & Piland, 2000; Wasonga & Piveral, 2004). Although a majority of faculty believe that a diversified institution and curriculum is positive, little research has examined the types of …

Mayer, Mashkoor A. Malik, Andrew B. Cooper, Holly Abeels, Jennifer K. Greene, Melissa Brodeur, Andrew A. Rosenberg

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The recovery of benthic communities inside the western Gulf of Maine fishing closure area was evaluated by comparing invertebrate assemblages at sites inside and outside of the closure four to six years after the closure was established. The major restriction imposed by the closure was a year-round prohibition of bottom gillnets and otter trawls. A total of 163 seafloor sites (~half inside and half outside the closure) within a 515-km2 study area were sampled with some combination of Shipek grab, Wildco box corer, or underwater video. Bottom types ranged from mud (silt and clay) to boulders, and the effects of …

Study Of Additives Used In A Copper Via Filling Chemistry, Sheik Ansar Usman Ibrahim

Master's Theses and Capstones

An experimental study on the effect of additives used in a copper via-filling chemistry is carried out by electroanalytical techniques. These include potential or current pulse reversal deposition and cyclic voltammetry methods. Suppression of electrodeposition caused by polyethylene glycol (PEG) and by a commercial suppressor was examined. Effect of bis-(3-sulfopropyl)-disulfide (SPS) and a combination with the suppressor was also examined. A model based on free accelerant complex formation was used to design the experiments. Contrast in the chemical environment between the bottom and the surface of the vias was simulated on a rotating disk electrode (RDE) by variation of rotation …

Investigating Attributions Of Academic Success And Failure In Adolescents, Elizabeth S. Meehan Jan 2009

Investigating Attributions Of Academic Success And Failure In Adolescents, Elizabeth S. Meehan

Master's Theses and Capstones

Adolescents attribute their school success to ability and effort to varying degrees. This study investigated how attributions vary with school achievement. Achievement was defined by the proxy of English class placement: Fundamental, Intermediate, Accelerated, Honors/AP. One hundred and fourteen 10th grade students from a New England high school responded to a survey instrument that used 5-point Likert scale items. Students rated their agreement with statements attributing success or failure to either the level of their ability or effort. These questions addressed academic success in English class, reading, and writing as well as in more general term. There were no significant …

Design And Implementation Of A Statistical Analysis Tool For Two Biological States, Gang Lu Jan 2009

Design And Implementation Of A Statistical Analysis Tool For Two Biological States, Gang Lu

Master's Theses and Capstones

The major goal of research in this thesis is to design and implement a software tool (Q5+) that can easily, quickly and reliably search biomarkers by statistically analyzing mass spectrometry data from two different biological states. Q5+ implements most of the Q5 algorithm, a very good algorithm that is used for classifying mass spectrometry data (Lilien et al). Compared Q5 Q5+ improves the usability of Q5 by incorporating a Graphic User interface and Matrix Library. Results show that by running the same data, Q5+ and Q5 showed the equivalent classification ability. Q5+ also implements the Peak Screening feature, which can …

The Lived Experience Of Adolescents With Dyslexia, Josefine M. Garcia

Master's Theses and Capstones

In this study, interviews with 8 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 16 were performed to explore how young people with dyslexia experienced school in terms of well-being, educational performance and challenges, self-esteem, peer relations, the roles of teachers and parents, and views on support. The elementary years of school seemed to be the most difficult for interviewees. While peer interactions were often seen as a crucial part of school, all students reported that they had experienced or feared ridicule from peers. Academic and personal self-esteem seemed low for all participants, and while many students saw their problems as …

Comments On The Relation Of M-Theory And Supergravity, Timothy C. Stamnitz Jan 2009

Comments On The Relation Of M-Theory And Supergravity, Timothy C. Stamnitz

Master's Theses and Capstones

M-theory was synthesized in 1995 due to observations regarding an intricate "web-of-dualities" that relate the five superstring theories, and recognition that D=11 supergravity is both nonperturbatively dual to type-IIA superstring and the low-energy limit of an 11-dimensional theory. Mutual development of M-theory and supergravity ensued.

During the past three years, related but independent field theory calculations suggest that N=8 d=4 supergravity scattering amplitudes may be ultraviolet finite. Since supergravity theories represent the low-energy effective actions of string theories and describe the interaction of massless fields in the string theory spectrum, it is noteworthy that it was suggested recently that N=8 …

Are The World's Oceans Optically Different?, Mimi Szeto Jan 2009

Are The World's Oceans Optically Different?, Mimi Szeto

Master's Theses and Capstones

With satellite technology, the dynamics of oceanic photosynthesis can be analyzed on a global scale using remotely sensed estimates of chlorophyll concentration. Such work is dependent on the performance of empirical ocean color algorithms that produce the chlorophyll estimates. In hopes to understand the sources of algorithm uncertainty, the NASA bio-Optical Marine Algorithm Data set (NOMAD) was analyzed. The OC4v.4 algorithm estimates were compared to NOMAD's in situ measurements, and a bias was apparent when the data were sorted by ocean (Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern). Several instrumental artifacts were found to be insignificant to the oceanic algorithm bias. Using a …

Modeling The Signal Processing Of A Multi-Sonar System To Determine Interference Solutions, Brian O'Donnell Jan 2009

Modeling The Signal Processing Of A Multi-Sonar System To Determine Interference Solutions, Brian O'Donnell

Master's Theses and Capstones

The quality of a multibeam echo-sounder sonar (ES) signal used in seafloor mapping is degraded by an interfering sidescan sonar (SS) signal. The ES and SS signals occur at approximately the same time, are in the same frequency band, and arrive from approximately the same direction. The ES signal is a 2 ms continuous wave pulse with a first null bandwidth of 1 kHz centered at 187.5 kHz. The interfering SS signal is an 8 ms linear frequency modulated chirp with a bandwidth of 2.5 kHz centered at 183 kHz.

The presence and properties of the interfering SS signal are …

Mathematical And Experimental Analysis Of The Steady States In A Simple Microvascular Network System, Ekta Suman Jan 2009

Mathematical And Experimental Analysis Of The Steady States In A Simple Microvascular Network System, Ekta Suman

Master's Theses and Capstones

In this paper, a three node network topology with one inlet and two outlets is studied for the existence of the steady state solutions. Both mathematical stimulation and in-vitro experimental methods are studied. The solution for the steady state is found numerically using MATLAB software. The experimental data are studied to verify the stimulation results.

In-vitro experiments are performed on two different diameter (35 micrometers and 50 micrometers) dimension microchannel devices using red blood cells flow. Closing material balance on the feed hematocrit is successfully attained. The results follow the trend of the results obtained from the numerical stimulation. However, …

Auto-Adaptive Multistage Curing Epoxy Coatings, Mathieu Chirat Jan 2009

Auto-Adaptive Multistage Curing Epoxy Coatings, Mathieu Chirat

Master's Theses and Capstones

Corrosion is an expensive issue for the Navy. Epoxy based protective coatings are used by the Navy to minimize corrosion. The goal of this work is to reduce the cost of corrosion by improving the reliability of the coating application. A better application process decreases defects and reduces early failures. A novel hybrid epoxy coating system composed of two layers has been developed. A first layer with two curing stages (an epoxy/amine polycondensation combined with a vinyl free radical polymerization) and a standard second layer were created and tested. A room temperature free radical initiator system was selected to perform …
