On Tensor Autoequivalences Of Graded Fusion Categories, Ian Swenson Marshall Jan 2016

On Tensor Autoequivalences Of Graded Fusion Categories, Ian Swenson Marshall

Doctoral Dissertations

Fusion categories generalize the representation theory of finite groups. The simplest examples of fusion categories come from finite groups, their representations, and their cohomology. In general, it is useful to examine group theoretical features of fusion categories such as groups of (isomorphism classes of) tensor invertible objects, and gradings by finite groups. Indeed, every fusion category has a maximal pointed subcategory (generated by tensor invertible objects) and a universal grading by a finite group. We use such features to study tensor autoequivalences.

Pointed fusion categories: categories for which all simple objects are tensor invertible, provide our prototype for graded fusion …

Sensation, Intuition, Space, And Time In Hegel’S Philosophy Of Subjective Spirit, Willem A. Devries Jan 2016

Sensation, Intuition, Space, And Time In Hegel’S Philosophy Of Subjective Spirit, Willem A. Devries

Faculty Publications

The subject of space, time, sensation, and intuition in Hegel is complicated, more so in Hegel than in Kant, and for good reason. Hegel rejected Kant’s Transcendental Idealism; besides the subjective reality Kant attributed to space and time, Hegel also attributed to them a truly objective reality. According to Hegel, space and time qualify finite things as they really are. Moreover, I shall argue, space and time, in Hegel’s view, have two different modes of subjective presence. We can illuminate these distinctive modes of subjective presence by comparing Hegel’s with Wilfrid Sellars’ strikingly similar arguments against Transcendental Idealism.

A Comparison Of Macrofaunal And Algal Communities In Oyster Aquaculture Gear, An Eelgrass Bed, Oyster Reef, And A Mudflat In Great Bay, New Hampshire, Megan Elizabeth Glenn Jan 2016

A Comparison Of Macrofaunal And Algal Communities In Oyster Aquaculture Gear, An Eelgrass Bed, Oyster Reef, And A Mudflat In Great Bay, New Hampshire, Megan Elizabeth Glenn

Master's Theses and Capstones

Oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and eelgrass (Zostera marina) are important ecosystem engineers in Great Bay, NH, however despite restoration efforts they have been in decline. In addition to loss of the resource, this degradation results in loss of associated ecosystem services such as habitat provision. It is possible that the recent increase in oyster farming in Great Bay could help mitigate habitat loss. My research objective was to quantify the biotic communities present in three natural habitats (eelgrass beds, oyster reefs and mudflats) in Great Bay NH and compare those to communities living on the type of gear (“racks and bags”) …

Modified Hybrid Modeling Technique For Flexible Spin-Stabilized Spacecraft Applied To Nasa's Magnetospheric Multiscale (Mms) Mission Tablesat Generation Ic (Tablesat Ic), Chris Hashem Jan 2016

Modified Hybrid Modeling Technique For Flexible Spin-Stabilized Spacecraft Applied To Nasa's Magnetospheric Multiscale (Mms) Mission Tablesat Generation Ic (Tablesat Ic), Chris Hashem

Master's Theses and Capstones

This continued research uses a hybrid dynamic algorithm to mathematically model the attitude dynamics of a flexible spacecraft. While a full finite element model would be the most accurate model, it also would be a huge computational burden on MMS. This method is meant to be an accurate approximation while still being computationally reasonable for on-board, real-time calculations. The algorithm uses Euler’s Moment Equations to propagate the dynamics of the spacecraft hub while finite element analysis is used to calculate the flexible boom displacements and update the systems mass moment of inertia tensor. This algorithm is iterative and the FEM …

Modeling Nosocomial Disease Outbreaks Using A Combined Differential Equations And Agent Based-Modeling Approach, Cody Eion Fitzgerald Jan 2016

Modeling Nosocomial Disease Outbreaks Using A Combined Differential Equations And Agent Based-Modeling Approach, Cody Eion Fitzgerald

Honors Theses and Capstones

A nosocomial infection is an infection that a patient develops while in a hospital or healthcare related setting, also known as a hospital acquired infection (HAI).This project has two foci: firstly to model a HAI within an individual, then secondly to understand community-level propagation effects of a nosocomial infection within a hospital ward. An analysis of a novel system of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations (representing the HAI attack and immune response within an individual) was first completed. More specifically the model includes an s parameter that allows frailty to be patient specific. After the dynamic behaviors of the model …

Modular And Dynamic Approaches To The Formation Of Single-Chain Polymer Nanoparticles, Bryan Tyler Tuten Jan 2016

Modular And Dynamic Approaches To The Formation Of Single-Chain Polymer Nanoparticles, Bryan Tyler Tuten

Doctoral Dissertations

The methodology towards the creation of nanoscale polymeric objects by way of the folding of single polymer chains has been enjoying success in the field of polymer chemistry and materials science. By synthesizing polymer chains with built in functionality either through functional side groups, or direct incorporation into the polymer backbone, polymer chemists are able to fold single polymer chains onto themselves through a broad range of covalent and non-covalent interactions in dilute solution. These compact, nano-sized objects can now be used in a wide arrange of functions and applications.

The aim of this dissertation is to provide first, a …

Ontology Of Close Human-Nature Relationships, Neil H. Kessler Jan 2016

Ontology Of Close Human-Nature Relationships, Neil H. Kessler

Doctoral Dissertations

The world’s environmental problems call out for solutions. At root, many of the solutions currently being offered revolve around how modern humans relate to the environment. An array of theorists have offered perspectives and prescriptions for improvement of this relationship, with many seeking to promote a sense of closeness between human and nonhuman. But, in attempting to offer perspectives on how this might be achieved, theorists tend to neglect the relational structure and dynamics that produce closeness or, if exploring it, tend to characterize the nonhuman as incapable of participating in it as a truly close, relational partner. In this …

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study pertains to the design and evaluation of a force-platform type instrument comprised of three strain gauge load cells, intended to measure the rate of change in mass and centroid position of an object undergoing rapid ablation by heated flow of air. The strain gauges are affixed to a steel frame, oriented in a triangle beneath a 25 X 20 cm rectangular platform, into which is machined a 9 X 9 regular grid for the purpose of static calibration. An algorithm derived from first principles is used to convert the distribution of the applied load among the strain gauges …

Extraterrestrial Resource Prospecting Using Particle Swarm Optimization And Conflict Based Search, Michael Andrew Johnson Jan 2016

Extraterrestrial Resource Prospecting Using Particle Swarm Optimization And Conflict Based Search, Michael Andrew Johnson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Extraterrestrial prospecting missions will be an important first step in preparation of the harvesting and extraction of natural resources in space. Additionally, knowledge from a prospecting mission will allow the subsequent harvesting or mining mission to efficiently extract resources. Due to the risk and cost of manned space-flight, these prospecting missions will be robotic in nature, and will enable investors to weigh risk and return of a harvesting mission.

The research presented here explores a hypothetical automated prospecting mission on the Martian surface using landscapes simulated from the Mars Global Surveyor satellite. In this mission, a swarm of autonomous exploration …

A Biological Based Model Of The Human Visual System Incorporating Lateral Subtractive Inhibition With Non-Uniform Sampling And Multiple Spatial Frequency Filters, Nisreen Hanoon Radhi Jan 2016

A Biological Based Model Of The Human Visual System Incorporating Lateral Subtractive Inhibition With Non-Uniform Sampling And Multiple Spatial Frequency Filters, Nisreen Hanoon Radhi

Master's Theses and Capstones

The human visual system has been an interesting topic of scientific research for decades. It is known that the cone photo-receptors are arrayed in a non-linear fashion and that a lateral subtractive inhibitory process is occurring in the visual pathway. This thesis outlines for the first time how lateral subtractive inhibition manifests itself in the context of a non-uniform sensor distribution where the distance between cone photo-receptors, and size of the receptors, are varying in a log manner when moving radially away from the foveal area. Range limits on the parameters that control the non-uniform sampling and coupling coefficients are …

Development Of Equipment And Methodology For The Measurement Of Underwater Sound Produced By Deep Foundation Construction, James Michael Browne Jan 2016

Development Of Equipment And Methodology For The Measurement Of Underwater Sound Produced By Deep Foundation Construction, James Michael Browne

Master's Theses and Capstones

Until the last decade, the underwater sound produced during marine pile driving and underwater drilling work was not considered a hazard to marine life. However, beginning with state environmental agencies on the West Coast, NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service has taken a national interest in this possible source of environmental disturbance to endangered species and marine mammals. Under Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act and the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act, “taking” of endangered species or marine mammals includes activities that could cause physical harm, harassment, or behavioral modification of a protected species. High intensity sound produced by construction …

Investigation Of Magnitude And Phase Errors In Waveguide Samples For The Nicolson-Ross-Weir Permittivity Technique, Paul Galvin Jan 2016

Investigation Of Magnitude And Phase Errors In Waveguide Samples For The Nicolson-Ross-Weir Permittivity Technique, Paul Galvin

Master's Theses and Capstones

The Nicolson-Ross-Weir (NRW) technique is a commonly-used method for measuring the electromagnetic properties of low-loss materials. The technique entails placing the material under test in a waveguide, and then inferring the electromagnetic properties of that material from the reflection and transmission coefficients measured at the ends of the guide.

While NRW technique generally provides reliable and accurate results, there are conditions where errors can arise. Some of the known errors are attributed to sample preparation, although errors have been observed even with perfectly-prepared samples. Those errors generally result in an overestimation of loss and unrealistic values for permeability, and they …

Stabilization Of Compressor Surge Using Gain-Scheduled Controller, Zaid A. Alsayouri Jan 2016

Stabilization Of Compressor Surge Using Gain-Scheduled Controller, Zaid A. Alsayouri

Master's Theses and Capstones

Gain scheduling is a control method that is used in nonlinear systems to optimize their controlled performance and robustness over a wide range of operating conditions. It is one of the most commonly used controller design approaches for nonlinear systems. In this control technique, the controller consists of a collection of linear controllers, each of which provides satisfactory closed-loop stability and performance for a small operating region, and combined they guarantee the stability of the system along the entire operating range. The operating region of the system is determined by a scheduling signal, also known as the scheduling variable, which …

Reducing Bias And Quantifying Uncertainty In Watershed Flux Estimates: The R Package Loadflex, Alison P. Appling, Miguel C. Leon, William H. Mcdowell

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

Many ecological insights into the function of rivers and watersheds emerge from quantifying the flux of solutes or suspended materials in rivers. Numerous methods for flux estimation have been described, and each has its strengths and weaknesses. Currently, the largest practical challenges in flux estimation are to select among these methods and to implement or apply whichever method is chosen. To ease this process of method selection and application, we have written an R software package called loadflex that implements several of the most popular methods for flux estimation, including regressions, interpolations, and the special case of interpolation known as …

Mycorrhizal Roots In A Temperate Forest Take Up Organic Nitrogen From 13c- And 15n-Labeled Organic Matter, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Andrew P. Ouimette, Erik A. Hobbie Dec 2015

Mycorrhizal Roots In A Temperate Forest Take Up Organic Nitrogen From 13c- And 15n-Labeled Organic Matter, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Andrew P. Ouimette, Erik A. Hobbie

All Materials

Background and Aims

The importance of the uptake of nitrogen in organic form by plants and mycorrhizal fungi has been demonstrated in various ecosystems including temperate forests. However, in previous experiments, isotopically labeled amino acids were often added to soils in concentrations that may be higher than those normally available to roots and mycorrhizal hyphae in situ, and these high concentrations could contribute to exaggerated uptake.

Methods

We used an experimental approach in which we added 13C-labeled and 15N-labeled whole cells to root-ingrowth cores, allowing proteolytic enzymes to release labeled organic nitrogen at a natural rate, as …

Earth Sciences

We introduce a new instrument for the measurement of in situ ambient aerosol extinction over the 300– 700 nm wavelength range, the spectral aerosol extinction (SpEx) instrument. This measurement capability is envisioned to complement existing in situ instrumentation, allowing for simultaneous measurement of the evolution of aerosol optical, chemical, and physical characteristics in the ambient environment. In this work, a detailed description of the instrument is provided along with characterization tests performed in the laboratory. Measured spectra of NO2 and polystyrene latex spheres (PSLs) agreed well with theoretical calculations. Good agreement was also found with simultaneous aerosol extinction measurements at …

Earth Sciences

Remote sensing observations suggest Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) albedo has declined since 2001, even in the dry snow zone. We seek to explain the apparent dry snow albedo decline. We analyze samples representing 2012–2014 snowfall across NW Greenland for black carbon and dust light-absorbing impurities (LAI) and model their impacts on snow albedo. Albedo reductions due to LAI are small, averaging 0.003, with episodic enhancements resulting in reductions of 0.01–0.02. No significant increase in black carbon or dust concentrations relative to recent decades is found. Enhanced deposition of LAI is not, therefore, causing significant dry snow albedo reduction or driving …
