Role-Play Simulations And System Dynamics For Sustainability Solutions Around Dams In New England, Natallia Leuchanka Diessner, Cuihong Song, Catherine Ashcraft, Weiwei Mo
New Hampshire EPSCoR
Research has shown that much of the science produced does not make its way to the decision-making table. This leads to a gap between scientific and societal progress, which is problematic. This study tests a novel science-based negotiation simulation that integrates role-play simulations (RPSs) with a system dynamic model (SDM). In RPSs, stakeholders engage in a mock decision-making process (reflecting real-life institutional arrangements and scientific knowledge) for a set period. By playing an assigned role (different from the participant’s real-life role), participants have a safe space to learn about each other’s perspectives, develop shared understanding about a complex issue, and …

A Miniaturized Phased Array Antenna Based On Novel Switch Line Phase Shifter Module, Rudra Lal Timsina
Master's Theses and Capstones
A miniaturized phased array antenna with a uniquely designed switch line phase shifter to obtain a steerable beam pattern is presented. A 1x4 phased array patch antenna is designed at 5 GHz using Rogers dielectric material with a relative permittivity of 6.15 and a thickness of 1.524 mm. Each element of the probe fed PAA are connected to a phase shifter on a different dielectric substrate. The phase shifter has four equal length microstrip lines placed in a circular fashion around a via that connects to the antenna at the center. The addition of each microstrip line is designed to …
The Role Of The Tumor Microenvironment In Waldenström Macroglobulinemia, Weiguo Han
The Role Of The Tumor Microenvironment In Waldenström Macroglobulinemia, Weiguo Han
Doctoral Dissertations
The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays an important role in the initiation, progression and maintenance of cancer cells and is implicated in cancer cell resistance to therapy. In Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM), a B-cell malignancy characterized by the overproduction of a monoclonal IgM protein, the TME plays an important role in disease biology by secreting cytokines that promote the malignant phenotype. In previous work, we have shown that the transcription factor GLI family zinc finger 2 (GLI2) regulates interleukin-6 (IL-6) secretion in the WM TME. IL-6, in turn, promotes WM growth and IgM secretion by malignant B cells. Tocilizumab/Actemra is an anti-IL-6R …
Emic Views Of A Reading Intervention: A Qualitative Case Study Of Motivation And Engagement, Joy Dangora Erickson
Emic Views Of A Reading Intervention: A Qualitative Case Study Of Motivation And Engagement, Joy Dangora Erickson
Doctoral Dissertations
Although little attention has been paid to primary-age children’s reading motivation in comparison to older readers, one disturbing trend has been repeatedly observed: reading motivation generally declines across the early elementary years. Given that children’s perceptions of school experiences shape motivation, and motivation impacts achievement, it is imperative that we better understand how school programming intended to promote reading skill development influences younger students’ motivation to read within it and beyond it. This dissertation employs a qualitative case study design, an approach rarely used to examine reading motivation, to begin addressing the first concern; a sample (N=14) of kindergarten, first-grade, …
Fungal Community And Soil Responses To Invasive Alliaria Petiolata (Garlic Mustard), Soil Warming, And Nitrogen Deposition, Mark Alan Anthony
Fungal Community And Soil Responses To Invasive Alliaria Petiolata (Garlic Mustard), Soil Warming, And Nitrogen Deposition, Mark Alan Anthony
Doctoral Dissertations
Non-native, invasive plants can fundamentally alter soil fungal communities and edaphic properties. In this dissertation, I first measured fungal and edaphic responses and recovery to invasive, Alliaria petiolata (garlic mustard; Brassicaceae) eradication across Southern New England. I conducted an experimental eradication and tracked fungal communities and soil properties for three years in relation to reference uninvaded plots and actively invaded plots. Neither the fungal community nor soil properties recovered (i.e. became similar to reference uninvaded plots) following eradication, and I discuss how altered soil properties likely prevented fungal communities from recovering via environmental filtering. I also measured fungal and edaphic …
What Stepmothers Can Teach Us About Contemporary Family Life, The Institution Of Motherhood, And The Reproduction Of Gender Inequality, Melissa Day
Doctoral Dissertations
A substantial amount of scholarly attention has been dedicated to understanding changes in the institution of family and, within the context of these changes, how the institution of motherhood continues to play a central role in reproducing gender inequalities for women in society. Through two distinct, but interrelated papers, this dissertation examines stepmothers’ experiences in the family with the goal of expanding our understanding of the reach of the institution of motherhood into the lives of all women. The first paper draws on 33 semi- structured, in-depth interviews with stepmothers. From these data, my findings are two-fold. First, I find …
Workplace Creativity And Motivation Among Counselors In A Residential Summer Camp Setting, Myles L. Lynch
Workplace Creativity And Motivation Among Counselors In A Residential Summer Camp Setting, Myles L. Lynch
Doctoral Dissertations
The following dissertation includes an overarching introduction and three conceptually linked articles described below. First, the introduction describes the educational and programmatic components of summer camp, a non-formal educational setting, based on the foundational writing of educational philosopher John Dewey. The introduction also identifies key definitions, concepts, and theoretical frameworks related to outdoor education, creativity, and motivation. The three articles, briefly described below, are self-contained and include distinct introductions, discussions, and implications for future research. Article 1. Summer camp is often anecdotally described as a context which may support creativity due to its unique programmatic features. For instance, residential summer …
Informal Caregiver Identity: Voluntary Job Fit, Teamwork, And Tools, Erica Spunt Jablonski
Informal Caregiver Identity: Voluntary Job Fit, Teamwork, And Tools, Erica Spunt Jablonski
Doctoral Dissertations
According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, an informal or family caregiver is “an unpaid individual . . . involved in assisting others with activities of daily living and/or medical tasks.” As informal caregiving in the United States has increased, research on the topic has been published in a myriad of disciplines (e.g., sociology, nursing, social work, and medicine). The literature has defined informal caregivers (ICGs), described their role and its impacts, detailed the costs and benefits of informal caregiving, and evaluated interventions to assist ICGs. Scholars have also investigated more natural, less experimental use of informational and support resources for …
Navigating The Path To Presence: Ideology, Politics, And The Campaign For Gender Balanced Boards And Commissions In Iowa, Ezra Joseph Temko
Navigating The Path To Presence: Ideology, Politics, And The Campaign For Gender Balanced Boards And Commissions In Iowa, Ezra Joseph Temko
Doctoral Dissertations
From 1986 through 1988, Iowa adopted and strengthened a gender balance law that required men and women be equally represented on state boards and commissions. In 2009, Iowa extended this law to also require its counties, municipalities, and school districts to gender balance their boards and commissions. Iowa’s law remains unique in the United States. Through archival research and interviews, my research investigates how advocates navigated the ideological landscape associated with this policy issue. My research unveils the mechanisms that substantially deradicalized gender balance in Iowa, enabling its passage and shifting Iowans’ perceptions of gender, governance, and affirmative action—disembedding gender …
Households' Preferences And Willingness To Pay For Hydrological Services In Veracruz, Mexico, Ian Mcginnis
Households' Preferences And Willingness To Pay For Hydrological Services In Veracruz, Mexico, Ian Mcginnis
Master's Theses and Capstones
Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) are transfer payments from governing bodies, households, firms, or non-governmental organizations to incentivize natural resource owners and managers to carry out environmental conservation efforts that promote the provision of ecosystem services. PES programs targeting reduction of deforestation have gained popularity due to the extensive ecosystem services of forests including carbon storage, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, and the provision of hydrological services (HS), the ecosystem services that provide benefits such as water quality improvement, water damage mitigation, and non-use value.
There is evidence in the literature that PES programs, while theoretically beneficial, face issues with long-term financial …
Eeg And Emg Sensorimotor Measurements To Assess Proprioception Following Acl Reconstruction, Teagan Frances Northrup
Eeg And Emg Sensorimotor Measurements To Assess Proprioception Following Acl Reconstruction, Teagan Frances Northrup
Master's Theses and Capstones
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is the primary source of rotational stability in the knee. When the ACL is torn, it typically must be repaired through reconstructive surgery, however, surgery may result in proprioceptive deficiencies in the knee. Proprioception plays an important role in spatial awareness, sensing movement and reacting accordingly. Existing methods of measuring proprioception are limited because they rely only on the error between the knee angles, a single biomechanical parameter, and neglects timing of neural communication. This study examines an alternative method of measuring proprioceptive responses to a stimulus (motion) by using electromyogram (EMG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) …
Effects Of Land Use On Wild Bee Functional Diversity, Katherine Akemi Odanaka
Effects Of Land Use On Wild Bee Functional Diversity, Katherine Akemi Odanaka
Master's Theses and Capstones
Globally, wild bees are facing major declines due to many different factors. Land use is regarded as one of the most damaging of these factors as changes in land use can result in the destruction of critical wild bee habitat and foraging resources. Relative abundance and species richness have been used as standard methods for measuring the health of wild bee communities yet neither abundance nor richness are able to quantify how landscape change affects the traits found in members of the population. Phylogenetic methods are a novel tool that can measure community structure by examining how traits influence population …
Measuring, Modeling, And Evaluating The Spatial Properties Of Northeast Oregon Forests Using Unmanned Aerial Systems, James Perkins
Measuring, Modeling, And Evaluating The Spatial Properties Of Northeast Oregon Forests Using Unmanned Aerial Systems, James Perkins
Master's Theses and Capstones
There is an ever expanding range of applications for the aerial images that unmanned aerial systems can uniquely provide. One such application is the use of high-resolution imagery for stand-level forest inventory. Inventory techniques utilizing unmanned aerial systems could be attractive where conditions demand high-resolution data, or where other aerial imagery sources are cost prohibitive. Here the effectiveness of unmanned aerial systems in this application was tested. Over the summer of 2015, a remote-controlled hexacopter equipped with a micro four thirds camera was flown over multiple 1600 meter-squared forested plots in Eastern Oregon. Additional ground-level validation measurements were collected including …

Bioinformatic Analysis Of Streptomyces To Enable Improved Drug Discovery, Kaitlyn Christina Belknap
Master's Theses and Capstones
Biotransformation is the use of an organism’s metabolic system to process compounds of interest and induce chemical modifications. Natural products, including those that have antitumor properties, can be biotransformed in an effort to increase the potency of the synthesized bioactive chemicals. This study investigated the potential of a bacterial isolate of the Streptomyces genus to biotransform ursolic acid (UA). Ursolic acid (UA) is an antileukemic compound derived from the ethnobotanical Northern Labrador Tea. Streptomyces derived natural products have been developed into chemotherapeutics including Daunorubicin and Doxorubicin, among others. The collection, isolation, purification, sequencing, and identification of a Streptomyces species from …
Spatio-Temporal Niche Patterns And Thermal Environmental Cues: Implications For The Persisitence Of Nicrophorine Burying Beetles, Maranda Lillian Keller
Spatio-Temporal Niche Patterns And Thermal Environmental Cues: Implications For The Persisitence Of Nicrophorine Burying Beetles, Maranda Lillian Keller
Master's Theses and Capstones
The persistence of burying beetles (Silphidae: Nicrophorus) depends on the successful acquisition of a highly competitive resource. Breeding pairs of the Nicrophorine genus work together to bury and prepare a suitable carcass as food for their developing larvae. To understand the mechanisms allowing for the persistence of multiple burying beetle species in Nicrophorine-rich communities, this thesis explores how sympatric burying beetles utilize space and time to partition the carrion resource. Further, to explore how thermal environments influence the reproductive biology of burying beetles, the response of Nicrophorus marginatus, both within and across generations is measured by monitoring rearing behaviors, movement …
Infiltration Characteristics Of Subsurface Gravel Filtration Systems For Stormwater Management, Ethan Ely
Infiltration Characteristics Of Subsurface Gravel Filtration Systems For Stormwater Management, Ethan Ely
Master's Theses and Capstones
Increased stormwater runoff due to the construction of impervious surfaces is a major issue in urban environments, causing combined sewer overflows, erosion in natural waterways, and damage to infrastructure. Subsurface gravel filter (SGF) system, a type of Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI), can effectively reduce stormwater runoff volumes and peak flows by infiltrating runoff. Current GSI design guidelines require that these systems be statically sized to store the 24-hour storm depth equaled or not exceeded approximately 90% of the days with rainfall. Across the United States, this design depth is roughly equal to 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) of rainfall. This sizing …

Distribution, Presence, Ecology, And Harvest Dynamics Of The Chaga Fungus (Inonotus Obliquus) In The White Mountain National Forest, Rhys Thomas Brydon-Williams
Master's Theses and Capstones
Inonotus obliquus is a fungal infection of birch trees that produces a large sterile conk, known colloquially as Chaga. When dried, Chaga has medicinal value as an anti-mutagen and for gastro-peptic relief. With the growth of the natural remedies market over the last decade, Chaga has increasingly become the target of harvest in the White Mountain National Forest (WMNF). Forest managers of the WMNF have asked USFS Forest Health Protection staff whether special use permitting for Chaga as a Non-Timber Forest Product (NTFP) should be allowed. However, it is difficult to make management recommendations or best management practices for harvesting …

Comm-entary
Honors Research Project.
Advised by Michelle Gibbons.
The purpose of this analysis is to understand the successful uses of rhetorical strategies in “tech backlash” discourse, taking Tristan Harris’s TEDTalk “How a Handful of Tech Companies Control Billions of Minds Every Day” and the website Center For Humane Technology as examples. Harris is one of the few speaking out on the necessity for a “tech backlash.” The tech back lash is a term created to explain the current reaction to increased technology use and internet dependence. I will introduce research completed on the creation of the digital society over the last …
