Granite Staters Continue To Prioritize Social Distancing, But Perceived Importance Of Restarting Economy Grows 5/11/2020, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

A majority of New Hampshire residents continue to believe that maintaining social distancing practices is more important than restarting the economy, but a growing number of people consider both to be important. Nearly all groups in the state consider restarting the economy to be more important than they did in early April, but significant differences remain based on gender, partisanship, and media consumption. More than a third of NH workers have lost a job or had their hours reduced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, largely unchanged since early April, but measures of stress concerning employment and the economy …

Trusting Scientists More Than The Government: New Hampshire Perceptions Of The Pandemic, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Thomas G. Safford May 2020

Trusting Scientists More Than The Government: New Hampshire Perceptions Of The Pandemic, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Thomas G. Safford

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Lawrence Hamilton and Thomas Safford report that despite a dramatic increase in the incidence of COVID-19, and an evolving government response, there was no significant change between surveys taken in mid-March and mid-April in the shares of New Hampshire residents who reported they were making “major changes” in their daily routines, had low confidence in the federal government’s response, or expressed trust in information from science agencies.

Seaweed Monitoring In The Great Bay Estuary: 2019 Annual Report, David M. Burdick, Gregg Moore, Arthur C. Mathieson, Andrew Payne, Lara Martin, Chris Peter

PREP Reports & Publications

As global warming increases temperature and nitrogen inputs change—either due to greater inputs associated with growing populations in the Great Bay or with nitrogen reductions at wastewater treatment plants—it is important to understand how these changes are impacting the estuary. To that end, the abundance and taxa of intertidal seaweeds have been assessed at fixed locations throughout the estuary since 2013. Seaweed abundance may be influenced by environmental conditions such as nutrient levels, water temperature, light availability, and invasive species. Therefore, seaweed communities can provide insights into the overall health of the estuary and signal ecological change. In 2019, abundance …

Behavioral Response To Multi-Channel Environmental Noise: Tracking Noise-Induced Changes In Daily Locomotor Patterns And Mate Attraction Strategies In Acheta Domesticus, Nicole Abate May 2020

Behavioral Response To Multi-Channel Environmental Noise: Tracking Noise-Induced Changes In Daily Locomotor Patterns And Mate Attraction Strategies In Acheta Domesticus, Nicole Abate

Master's Theses and Capstones

Communication is essential in biotic systems, and signals represent information exchanged between a sender and receiver. Noise can interfere with the transmission, detection, and processing of signals, and can occur in any sensory channel. Noise can also disrupt behaviors related to foraging, predator detection and avoidance, and social interactions. Most research on the effects of noise on animal behavior has been focused on its effects on terrestrial avian species and marine mammals in an isomodal context, with data on invertebrates generally sparse. Many insects have highly adapted structures for sound and vibration detection, and thus make ideal models for studying …

Distribution And Fate Of Per- And Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (Pfas) In Wastewater Treatment Plants Discharging To Great Bay, Elham Tavasoli May 2020

Distribution And Fate Of Per- And Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (Pfas) In Wastewater Treatment Plants Discharging To Great Bay, Elham Tavasoli

Master's Theses and Capstones

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent a major class of emerging contaminants composed of nearly 5000 human-made chemicals. PFAS have been used since the 1950s as surfactants in industrial and consumer products due to their unique water and oil repellency, high surface activity, and thermostability. These compounds can bioaccumulate and pose human and ecological health concerns; for example, PFAS intensive exposure can affect the liver, reproduction and development in humans and wildlife. Ubiquitous presence of these compounds in different environmental matrices, high persistency, and potential threats to human and environmental health, have made it critical to develop an understanding of how …

Three experiments were conducted. The objective of Experiment 1 was 2-fold: 1) to evaluate the effect of storage of wet brewer’s grains (WBG) treated with salt or a commercial preservative (PRES) on yeast and mold growth and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and 2) to evaluate in situ dry matter (DM) and protein digestibility of WBG treated with salt and PRES. Seven treatments were used for objective 1: control (0%), PRES (0.05%, 0.10%, 0.15%); or salt (1.4%, …

Peer Victimization And Delinquency: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Their Relationships, Nicholas Alexander Adams May 2020

Peer Victimization And Delinquency: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Their Relationships, Nicholas Alexander Adams

Doctoral Dissertations

The correlation between peer victimization and delinquency has long been established in the sociological and criminological literatures. However, the research to this point has focused on one or the other as an outcome. This study addresses this gap in the literature by teasing out a causal relationship between them. By using 3 waves of the Developmental Victimization Survey, peer victimization and delinquency are treated as both predictors and outcomes for each other. In doing so, this study finds evidence to support a causal relationship between experiencing peer victimization at wave 1 and later delinquent behavior at wave 3. It also …

Bullying Trends In The United States And An Analysis Of The Impact Of Prevention Programs On Bullying Subtypes And Gender, Reeve Kennedy May 2020

Bullying Trends In The United States And An Analysis Of The Impact Of Prevention Programs On Bullying Subtypes And Gender, Reeve Kennedy

Doctoral Dissertations

This three-article dissertation presents three standalone articles that address bullying trends over time within the United States (US), gaps in bullying prevention program outcomes (both within the US and internationally), and the role of study and methodological features on the findings. The first article used meta-regression to establish trends in different types of bullying involvement from 1998 to 2017, identified factors that help explain variation in bullying trends, and determined differences in those trends by gender and grade. The second article used meta-analysis to examine the effectiveness of bullying prevention programs on three subtypes of traditional bullying victimization: physical, relational, …

The Effects Of Interpersonal Emotion Regulation During Conflict On Partner-Directed State Aggression, Katherine Debra Marjorie Lee May 2020

The Effects Of Interpersonal Emotion Regulation During Conflict On Partner-Directed State Aggression, Katherine Debra Marjorie Lee

Doctoral Dissertations

Emotion regulation has been identified as a predictor of intimate partner aggression (IPA), a widespread and costly problem in the United States. However, researchers who study emotion regulation and IPA have primarily focused on the individual, despite the fact that IPA is often bidirectional and emotion regulation, a risk factor for IPA, is largely a dyadic process. Further, the majority of emotion regulation and IPA researchers have conducted correlational studies and therefore are unable to establish emotion regulation as a causal and temporal antecedent to IPA empirically. The purpose of the current dissertation was to investigate the impact of interpersonal …

“Speaking Of Dignity”: Interviews With Non-Unionized Adjunct Faculty Teaching In An English Department At A Catholic Church-Affiliated University, Jacob Aaron Bennett May 2020

“Speaking Of Dignity”: Interviews With Non-Unionized Adjunct Faculty Teaching In An English Department At A Catholic Church-Affiliated University, Jacob Aaron Bennett

Doctoral Dissertations

This study considers the phenomenon of “dignity” as experienced by non-unionized, part-time, English Department faculty at a Catholic Church-affiliated campus in the Northeast region of the United States; I refer to the institution as Urban Catholic University. This focus is motivated by the apparent tension between Catholic social traditions regarding labor rights and worker dignity, on the one hand, and working conditions for adjuncts as described in the literature on higher education faculty employment. To wit, the labor-positive and union-affirmative tradition in Catholic Social Teaching (CST) has been unequivocally supportive of the rights of workers to unionize since the 1890s, …

Full Disclosure: Scholars In Rhetoric And Composition Discuss Transparency In Religious-Based Research, Lauren Short May 2020

Full Disclosure: Scholars In Rhetoric And Composition Discuss Transparency In Religious-Based Research, Lauren Short

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores how and why scholars in Rhetoric and Composition, who study religious topics, choose to disclose (or not) their positionalities in relation to their research. Included in this investigation are scholars of atheist rhetorics, as well. Through interviews with scholars of religious topics in Rhetoric and Composition and textual analysis of religiously-based academic scholarship in the field, I explore the situations and contexts in which scholars feel most comfortable disclosing their positionalities and how they do so. Furthermore, I examine why some scholars choose not to disclose their positionalities in particular instances.

Drawing upon queer theory and “coming …

Housework And Perceptions Of Fairness: How Do They Affect Older Married Women's And Men's Sexual Frequency And Sexual Satisfaction?, Kirsten Elizabeth Kemmerer May 2020

Housework And Perceptions Of Fairness: How Do They Affect Older Married Women's And Men's Sexual Frequency And Sexual Satisfaction?, Kirsten Elizabeth Kemmerer

Doctoral Dissertations

This study analyzed how weekly housework hours and perceptions of fairness surrounding the division of household labor are correlated with midlife to older married women’s and men’s sexual frequency and sexual satisfaction. I analyzed statistical data from Wave 3 of the National Survey of Families and Households (2001-2003), and the sample consisted of 1,920 individuals (954 men and 966 women) ages 40-70 years old. Findings from my study showed that the sexual satisfaction of older Americans matters, while sexual frequency does not. For instance, results illustrated that when weekly housework increased, sexual satisfaction decreased. I also found that the perceived …

Fear And Loathing In Post 9/11 America: Public Perceptions Of Terrorism As Shaped By News Media And The Politics Of Fear, Reinmar Cristobal Freis-Beattie May 2020

Fear And Loathing In Post 9/11 America: Public Perceptions Of Terrorism As Shaped By News Media And The Politics Of Fear, Reinmar Cristobal Freis-Beattie

Doctoral Dissertations

The politics of fear have deeply divided the United States of America. Decades of propaganda portray Muslims as a terrorist threat to the dominant US culture and society. The War on Terror and its consequences, including the rise of ISIL and the 2015 Syrian refugee crisis, resulted in the destabilization of democracy in both the US and Europe. I argue that the US public’s fear of terrorism is not just a fear of violence but instead reflects racial tensions and anxieties in a rapidly changing world. These tensions and anxieties are fueled by media coverage leveraging a general fear and …

Element-Based Multi-Objective Optimization Methodology Supporting A Transportation Asset Management Framework For Bridge Planning And Programming, Karim Naji

Doctoral Dissertations

The Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) mandates the development of a risk-based transportation asset management plan and use of a performance-based approach in transportation planning and programming. This research introduces a systematic element-based multi-objective optimization (EB-MOO) methodology integrated into a goal-driven transportation asset management framework to

(1) improve bridge management,

(2) support state departments of transportation with their transition efforts to comply with the MAP-21 requirements,

(3) determine short- and long-term intervention strategies and funding requirements, and

(4) facilitate trade-offs between funding levels and performance.

The proposed methodology focuses on one transportation asset class (i.e., …

Am I A Math Or Science Person? How High School Students’ Attitudes Towards Mathematics And Science Influence Their Decision To Major In Stem, Dalton Dayne Marsh May 2020

Am I A Math Or Science Person? How High School Students’ Attitudes Towards Mathematics And Science Influence Their Decision To Major In Stem, Dalton Dayne Marsh

Doctoral Dissertations

Motivated by an innovation-driven economy, critical emphasis has been placed on the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce in the United States. Education has been charged to prepare a diverse population of young people qualified to take up these jobs and lead the nation into a rapidly evolving technological future. How to best approach this goal is still being negotiated. While past research and efforts focused largely on improving students’ achievement in mathematics and science, more recent research points to the need to also consider students’ attitudes towards STEM subjects. However, what types of attitudes (e.g., self-efficacy, identity, interest, …

Responses Of Bats To White-Nose Syndrome And Implications For Conservation, Meghan Stark May 2020

Responses Of Bats To White-Nose Syndrome And Implications For Conservation, Meghan Stark

Doctoral Dissertations

The appearance and spread of emerging infectious diseases pose a significant threat to wildlife populations worldwide having resulted in declines far surpassing those in recorded history. White-nose syndrome (WNS), caused by Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), is currently one of the most pervasive wildlife diseases, with devastating impacts on several North American bat species. Since its initial detection in 2006, Pd has spread rapidly across North America and population declines at hibernating sites have been severe; however, mortality rates from WNS vary among species. While environmental conditions in hibernacula may be strong predictors of disease impacts on individual species, variation in susceptibility …

"Homesick For Something That's Never Going To Be Again": Redefining Identity And Community After The Camp Fire, Adrienne Brown May 2020

"Homesick For Something That's Never Going To Be Again": Redefining Identity And Community After The Camp Fire, Adrienne Brown

Master's Theses and Capstones

In the context of rapid environmental change and more frequent and severe natural disasters, it is imperative that we understand the impact these disasters have on affected communities, particularly the effects they have on residents’ relationships to both their physical and social worlds. To do this, I conducted twenty-four in-depth qualitative interviews with residents of Paradise and surrounding impacted communities following the 2018 Camp Fire, which destroyed roughly 95% of the town and was California’s most destructive wildfire to date. I present findings from these interviews in three stages: during the fire itself, during the short-term response, and finally looking …

Examining Brain Network Modularity In U.S. Military Personnel With Blast Vs. Non-Blast Related Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Hannah Marie Franz May 2020

Examining Brain Network Modularity In U.S. Military Personnel With Blast Vs. Non-Blast Related Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Hannah Marie Franz

Master's Theses and Capstones

Problem: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major health concern to the public, accounting for alarming numbers of hospitalizations and emergency department visits per year. mTBI is of particular concern because of the injury’s ‘invisible’ nature. There are a lack of clinical findings on current evidence-based diagnostic protocols, and sufferers of this “silent” injury persistently complain of changes in functioning compared to their baseline abilities.

Methods: 103 active duty service members from the SCORE study comprised 3 groups: mTBI resulting from blast (bmTBI; n=32), mTBI not resulting from blast (e.g. falls, motor vehicle accidents) (mTBI; n=29), and orthopedic controls (OC; …
